Billy Besson, Marie Riou to lead France SailGP Team
Marseille, France: Four-time world champion and 2016 Olympian Billy Besson was today announced as the helmsman for the France SailGP Team. Part of a new global racing league setting sail in February 2019, the French team also features Marie Riou, SailGP's first female onboard crew member. The full team was revealed on Marseille Harbor, which will host the final event of the inaugural season (September 20-22, 2019).
The SailGP event in Marseille will serve as the league championship. It will include a third day of racing, highlighted by the thrilling, season-ending winner-takes-all US$1 million match race between the season's top two teams.
The French team includes a pair of Olympians in Besson and Riou - who have together captured four world titles and are campaigning for a berth at Tokyo 2020 - in addition to three America's Cup veterans and one of the country's most talented young sailors. They will be racing against teams from Australia, China, France, Great Britain, Japan and the United States on identical wingsailed F50s - the fastest catamarans in the world, capable of exceeding 50 knots (60mph/100kph).
The five members of the France SailGP Team are: Besson, 37, of Tahiti (helmsman); Matthieu Vandame, 36, of Vannes (wing trimmer); Riou, 37, of Plougastel-Daoulas (flight controller); Devan Le Bihan, 35, of Hennebont (grinder); and Olivier Herledant, 38, of Concarneau (grinder). In addition, Timothé Lapauw, 22, of Nice, will serve as the reserve grinder.
Sanctioned by World Sailing, SailGP racing in Marseille will take place in the Rade Nord, in front of the seawall outside the famous Old Port of Marseille and the Grand Port Maritime de Marseille, with anticipated large on-water and seawall spectator crowds. The event will take place from Friday to Sunday, with daily racing from 2-4 p.m.
New York Yacht Club launches America's Cup test boat
The New York Yacht Club are the second 2021 America's Cup challenger to launch a test boat.
American Magic revealed on their Facebook page images of a weekend launching in Rhode Island of a monohull with foils, looking to be just under the 12m permitted length for test boats for the 75-foot foiling monohulls to be used in Auckland.
Their launch follows INEOS Team UK launching a smaller test version in July that has successfully foiled.
That leaves America's Cup holders Emirates Team New Zealand and Italian challenger of record Luna Rossa still to show their hand in the test department though the Kiwis are understood to have been doing plenty of work on a simulator which was the basis of their leadup work to the successful challenge in Bermuda last year.

San Diego Yacht Club Wins 2018 Lipton Cup
Skipper Tyler Sinks and the crew of Team SDYC completed the comeback on the final race of the day, outlasting the team from Long Beach Yacht Club to win the 2018 Lipton Cup. The two teams battled each other with SDYC needing to recover from a 3 point deficit, while no other team was in the running for the title by at the start of race 12. SDYC did just that, creating an overall tie in points for the regatta, and winning the tiebreaker. This is SDYC's 3rd Lipton Cup win in the last 4 years, all under the leadership of skipper Tyler Sinks.
t's a marathon, not a sprint. That's the theory that San Diego Yacht Club skipper Tyler Sinks followed during this weekend's twelve intense races that brought his team to win the 2018 Sir Thomas Lipton Challenge Cup for the second year in a row. And so it goes, they were right... again.
The final day of the Lipton Cup started with gloomy skies and cool breezes around two knots resulting in postponement. Traffic in San Diego Bay was limited, allowing for a wide open course and minimal wake. Once the breeze picked up to over eight knots, the teams were ready to compete in their final day of races. The sun broke through the clouds and spectator boats surrounded the course in anticipation of the final results. With only three races left to pull to the top of the score sheet, stakes were high on two teams in particular, San Diego Yacht Club and Long Beach Yacht Club.
The overall first place winner was San Diego Yacht Club, followed by Long Beach Yacht Club in second and California Yacht Club in third.
San Diego Yacht Club is now the two-time defending champion of the Sir Thomas Lipton Challenge Cup! Next year, 12 yacht club teams, including LBYC, will come back and fight for the Lipton Cup Trophy yet again.

IRC and ORC Agree Continued Cooperation
Representatives of the RORC and ORC met at the Royal Malta Yacht Club before the start of the Rolex Middle Sea Race to discuss the continued cooperation between IRC and ORC on a technical level, and the future of a joint Offshore World Championship. Both sides agreed that the Hague Offshore World Championship, which used both IRC and ORC to score the results, was a success on many levels. Most notably was the willingness of the technicians from IRC and ORC to quickly find solutions to measurement issues and that most competitors felt that the combined scoring allowed boats normally using different rating rules to race competitively against each other.
The two international rating systems recognised by World Sailing, IRC and ORC, agreed to continue their dialogue on a technical level to further develop the Universal Measurement System (UMS) to allow boats to be rated more easily for different measurement system around the world.
It was also agreed that IRC would be involved in the decision to select future venues for the joint Offshore World Championships and in the interest of the sport and event organisers that a joint Worlds would be held every two years starting in 2020.

The upcoming 40th anniversary Route du Rhum - Destination Guadeloupe will be an amazing race to follow. Included in the record-size fleet of 122 craft will be the Ultime Edmond de Rothschild - the first ever hydrofoiling maxi trimaran. Great reliability is required in the search for great speed and Harken hydraulics will help lift the maxi tri to new heights as it attempts to foil its way into the record books.
Edmond de Rothschild is a beast of a boat in a performance-orientated way. It measures in at 32m (104ft) LOA with a beam of 23m (75ft) and all-up weight of 15.5 tonnes (33,069 lb). The breathtaking feature of this boat is the pair of 5m (16ft 5in) tall hydrofoils that allow it to "fly" in winds as light as 14kts.
The Route du Rhum - Destination Guadeloupe is a singlehanded race measuring 3,540 nautical miles. Skipper Sébastien Josse will be alone in his pursuit of the race record of seven days, 15 hours (set in the 2014 race). He'll be helming, navigating, trimming sails and raising and lowering the huge foils all by himself. A properly executed tack or gybe on an Ultime can take up to 45 minutes, at least 20 minutes of which is spent grinding hydraulic functions. It's a workout fit for the best triathletes, while also requiring the concise decision-making ability of Stephen Hawking.

Artemis Technologies, a spin-off from America's Cup team Artemis Racing, is to establish a new facility in Belfast Harbour, initially creating 35 jobs, in a bid to return commercial shipbuilding to the city.
The company led by double Olympic gold medalist, Iain Percy OBE, will use its expertise garnished at the highest echelons of world yacht racing to develop new green maritime technologies and build an 'Autonomous Sailing Vessel' (ASV).
The ASV will be a zero-emissions 45 metre catamaran, that will require no fossil fuels, offer unlimited range, and has the potential to travel at 50 knots, with a cruising speed of 30 knots in any condition.
Already the company has received the backing and collaborative support from stakeholders including Belfast City Council, Belfast Harbour, Stena Line, Bombardier, Harland and Wolff, Queen's University, Ulster University, Belfast Met, NIACE, Creative Composites and Catalyst Inc; and is the lead applicant on a UK Research and Innovation, Strength in Places funding call.
