Kiwis Split The Day With Oracle Team USA

Emirates Team New Zealand earned a split of the day with ORACLE TEAM USA after winning a thrilling Race 10 by 16 seconds.
The Kiwis held the lead early in the race, but the defender made a huge charge on the upwind leg and rounded the windward gate with a 1 second advantage. The two crews split early on the ensuing run and when they came back together it was the Kiwis with starboard advantage and the lead, which they held to the finish. The lead changed hands four times in the race.
In Race 9, ORACLE won the race by 47 seconds over Emirates Team New Zealand in a wire-to-wire victory, one that puts the team's first point on the scoreboard.
After Sunday's 2 races, Emirates Team New Zealand leads on the scoreboard 7-1, and 7-3 in wins. The winner of the 34th America's Cup will be the first team to win 9 points. For the Kiwis that means two additional race wins and for ORACLE TEAM USA it means eight. ORACLE TEAM USA isn't credited with its first two wins of the match due to a penalty imposed by the International Jury.

Royal Canadian Repeats As Invitational Cup Champion

Twenty yacht clubs from 13 different countries enjoyed some sensational racing at the 2013 Invitational Cup presented by Rolex. However, on the final day of the regatta, the lack of wind frustrated the competitors and race officers alike.
The race committee tried every trick in the book to get some racing in and initially they succeeded by taking the fleet offshore, where 10 knots of breeze filled in from the South at around 1400 local time for Race 11.
Larchmont YC (at right) knew before that start that this would be the only race of the day and the team from New York wasted no time in harassing the regatta leader, Royal Canadian Yacht Club. In the pre-start the two yachts were prowling around each other in an attempt to force a penalty. At the start, Larchmont YC managed to get over the top of Royal Canadian Yacht Club, forcing them to the unfavored right side of the course and for a time, Larchmont YC looked like they might be able to put enough boats in between them and the Canadian team to win the regatta. However, at the top mark, two yachts were penalized and Royal Canadian YC made up a few places there before capitalizing on free air to make even more gains on the run. By the bottom mark, Royal Canadia YC was ahead of Larchmont YC on the water.
As quickly as the breeze had materialized, it vanished, and the race was abandoned, much to the frustration of Royal Hong Kong YC, which was way out in front. -- Louay Habib

Ocean Safety And Exposure Torches Are Lighting Up The Southampton Boat Show
It's time for weight conscious skippers to cast off the heavy duty torches and spare batteries, underwater lights and strobes all in one go. Ocean Safety has the marine range of elite Exposure torches for the serious sailor on show at this week's PSP Southampton Boat Show.
The torches, from Exposure Marine, cover all the bases from night time sail trimming to general illumination, and most importantly are powerful enough to illuminate a man overboard.

Porto Cervo, Italy: The Audi Settimana delle Bocche, organized by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (YCCS) in collaboration with Audi, drew to a perfect conclusion as the competing TP52/IRC52 and Soto 40 fleets battled to the very last to take home the silverware in the final leg of the European circuits of both classes. Azzurra (ITA), the TP52 owned by Alberto Roemmers and flying the YCCS burgee claimed a hard-won victory over Quantum Racing (USA) while Pedro Mendonça's Bigamist (POR) triumphed in the Soto 40 fleet ahead of Estampa del Viento (ESP).
Heading into the final day of racing, following a week of head-to-head battles between Azzurra and Quantum Racing, the Italian boat was holding on to just a three point lead and all was still to play for. After the first of two windward-leeward races, that delta was reduced to two points and everything hung on the performances of the two leaders in the final race. Quantum saw their chances evaporate as they crossed the start line of the last race OCS together with Ràn (SWE). Despite a highly impressive comeback which saw Quantum claw their way back up the fleet to finish second, the Italians could not be caught.
Quantum Racing were able to console themselves with overall victory in the 52 Super Series: after four legs of the circuit the team led the rankings by a clear 31 points.
Six races for the Soto 40 fleet provided numerous changes of leadership and tight competition for the entire week. The Portugese team on Bigamist, which entered the final day on equal points with Estampa del Viento, secured overall victory by just one point thanks to a bullet in today's final race. Second on the podium was Estampa del Viento, owned by Miguel A. Gonzales. Philipp Schoeller's Earlybird took third place. Bigamist, with top match racer Hugo Rocha aboard, also claimed victory in the European circuit for the class.

Clipper Leg 1 Race 2 : Brest To Rio
As the 12 strong fleet battle to make gains in Race 2, the road to Rio, Derry-Londonderry-Doire is top of the leader board for a second night, but with Mission Performance now in second place how much longer will the Northern Irish entry be able to maintain the lead?
It was as frustrating night of racing for Henri Lloyd challenging for first place, and after positioning itself the wrong side of a major wind shift has fallen into third overnight.
However, it was a different story for Invest Africa which over the last 24 hours has climbed three places to fifth position and continues to apply the pressure as it makes steady progress on the rest of the fleet.
Rich Gould, skipper of Invest Africa describes how he has been enjoying the power of the Clipper 70 as his team climb through the ranks.
"We have been ploughing the north Atlantic in half with boat speed in double figures for pretty much most of the time. I always knew these boats were going to be quicker than the Clipper 68's but I never thought that they would be this much quicker! Invest Africa is awesome, she is flying."

Gazprom International Dragon World Championship

With just two points separating Andrey Kirilyuk and Klaus Diederichs for the overall championship and a single point separating Philip Dohse and Poul Richard Hoj-Jensen for the Corinthian title, it was clear that the final race of the Gazprom International Dragon World Championship in Weymouth was going to be a gripping affair.
Kirilyuk, a three time Russian Olympian crewed by Aleksey Bushuev and top match racer Alina Dotsenko, had a two point advantage going in and Diederich was already certain of the silver medal slot so it was all to play for between the two crews. As the committee went into the start sequence it was no surprise to see that Diederichs, crewed by British Olympian and Etchells World Champion Andy Beadsworth and North Sails' Jamie Lea, was determined to control Kirilyuk on the start line. To win Diederichs had to get two boats between them or sail him down below 18th place.
Initially Diederichs and his team thought that Kirilyuk had done enough to win it and returned home despondent. But on attempting to congratulate Kirilyuk back ashore they discovered that their mental arithmetic was faulty and that they had in fact claimed the Royal Hellenic Trophy and the right to call themselves Dragon World Champions by a single point margin.

Search Begins To Find Britain's Top Sailors For 2013
The search is on to find Britain's top yachtsman of the year and the most promising young sailor of 2013
Nominations for the two awards were launched today at the PSP Southampton Boat Show, and the first nomination cast by former holder of the YJA Yachtsman of the Year title, quadriplegic sailor, Geoff Holt, MBE.
Award organisers, the Yachting Journalists' Association also announced today that Apollo Boats Ltd will be sponsoring both awards for the next three years, with an option to continue by mutual agreement.
The awards are to be known as the YJA Apollo Boats Yachtsman of the Year Award and the YJA Apollo Boats Young Sailor of the Year Award. The nominations were launched at the Show by YJA hon secretary and former chairman, June Hamilton. Former winner Geoff Holt MBE, cast the first nomination during a short presentation at the Boat Show Media Centre.

Nespresso 18' Skiff International Regatta For The Mark Foy Trophy
There were 22 boats from five countries in the Nespresso 18' Skiff International Regatta for the Mark Foy Trophy but, really, only one country owns San Francisco Bay this week.
On alternating days when Team New Zealand was trouncing Oracle Team USA, the Mark Foy was strictly a clash between Kiwis---Alex Vallings' C-Tech and David McDiarmid's Yamaha. Nobody else was close.
Each scored 11 points and had the same number of firsts (5) and seconds (4), so it came down to who finished ahead in the 10th and final race: Vallings, first to McDiarmid's fourth, which became one of the latter's two throwouts.
"We had to win," Vallings said. "Halfway down the run we were third, but Yamaha was behind us the whole race."
It was the second Nespresso title in a row for Vallings and his crew of Josh McCormack and Chris Kitchen, as well as a repeat of their prestigious Mark Foy title they won in hometown Auckland last year---second in the 18s only to the JJ Giltinan that is recognized as the class's world championship, which they haven't won. Yet.
St. Francis YC managed the skiff event, independent of the AC competition, while the event is being hosted in conjunction with the AC Open as part of the Summer of Sailing, taking place at the America's Cup Village on Marina Green.
While the JJ Giltinan regatta run annually in Sydney since 1938 is regarded as the class's world championship, the Mark Foy has gained global status entering its fifth year of spreading the skiff spirit to various world locations.

2.4mr World Championship
It was seventh heaven for Sweden's Stellan Berlin after he clinched the 2013 International 2.4mR World Championship crown on a nail-biting final day at the Poole Yacht Club on Friday.
Berlin - who had won six previous World crowns and medalled at 12 of the last 13 Championships - made it a record-breaking seven Worlds' golds as he overcame all the odds to clinch victory in the final race.
The 47-year-old from from Djursholm, just north of Stockholm, went into the 11th and last race nine points behind overall leader, Britain's Helena Lucas, knowing he needed to beat the Brit by at least eight boats, or finish no lower than 5th if Lucas was more than eight boats behind him.
And that is exactly as the race panned out as Berlin finished second, to Lucas' 21st meaning he wrapped up victory with Lucas settling for silver.
Lucas' British Sailing Team teammate, Megan Pascoe, wrapped up a hard-fought bronze, capitalising on 23 Black Flag Disqualifications (BFDs) in the opening race of the day to post three good results and win her second successive Worlds bronze.
Next year's World Championships will be hosted by The National Yacht Club, Toronto in Canada, home of the newly-elected class President, the double Paralympian, Bruce Millar. He admits Poole has set a standard to follow.
"This week has been a wonderful example of how the class and the organisers have worked together to make it a Worlds that people will remember and that people enjoyed. The sailing was good, and overall I think everything went to plan. This time I paid a little more attention to the details and I can take some things home with me. We are really looking forward to welcoming next year's Worlds to Canada."

The ORC fleet is on its way! Today at 12pm the starting pistol was fired in the Flensburger Forde between Marina Sonwik and the Yacht Harbour Glücksburg. The conditions were absolutely ideal. The sun came out in between the clouds and gave fantastic light conditions for the photographers.
With temperatures around 13 degrees Celsius is was rather autumn-like but to be expected at this time of the year. In joyful anticipation and wrapped in warm clothes the crews left for the 800 nautical miles that lie ahead.
After a short upwind course to the windward mark 12 to 14 knots from westerly direction allowed the crews to set their gennakers and spinnakers and as expected, "Outsider" with helmsman Tilmar Hansen raced away under gennaker and took the lead. The Elliott 52-crew has proposed an ambitious target for themselves: They announced their target time for arrival in Saint Petersburg for Wednesday, 18th of September at 14.28h (CET). The navigator who gets closest to his ETA-prediction will win the Navigator's Prize of Nord Stream Race.

Craig Burlton (GBR) with his crew of Adam Heeley and Stephen 'AB' White are Audi SB20 World Champions 2013. The result was secured after one race on Friday 13th September in the Baie des Iles d' Or. This is the second time Burlton and Heeley and White have held the class title.
With the Championship still up for grabs in what was to be the final race, the arrival of the fleet at the first windward mark rounding was tense for all involved.
On the race to the finish, the result was still open. The winner only became clear after some quick calculations from the press boat that the winner emerged. Burlton had done enough, he was three points clear and the 2013 World Champion.
SB20 sailing doesn't stop there for 2013, with Autumn and Winter racing scheduled throughout Europe there will be plenty of competitive racing to enjoy ahead of 2014.
