Contributions welcome, send to Jury Decisions - Competitors will be able to use water ballast provided that the amount used to benefit performance is also in position when the boat is measured. * Statement by Tom Ehman, GGYC spokesperson: The International Jury for the 33rd America's Cup has confirmed the start time for races will be 1006. This was one of five decisions reached by the Jury following hearings in Valencia in which Golden Gate Yacht Club's requests for redress were heard for improper actions taken by the defender, Societe Nautique de Geneve. The Jury gave Race Office Harold Bennett the discretion to use his experience and judgment on what constitutes fair and safe conditions for racing. GGYC submitted that SNG's planned low wind limits would unfairly advantage Alinghi 5 and disadvantage USA. GGYC's yacht USA has also been cleared to use onboard wind-detection equipment as well as fast and green friction-reduction technologies. SNG had previously arranged rules to permit both these things, but had a last minute change of mind, and then attempted to prevent USA from using them. "This brings some degree of common sense back to the rules," commented GGYC spokesman Tom Ehman. "The pinnacle event in our sport, contested by the world's best sailors, ought to allow racing in conditions that even kids in the Optimist trainer class would say were too light to be any fun." * From Alinghi: While the challenger's request for redress regarding their intention to dump substances in the sea while racing was denied, the Jury reinforced the fact that all applicable laws must apply to any discharge while racing. The competing parties mutually agreed to modify the rules regarding detection equipment at the challenger's request. "We welcome the Jury's involvement and decisions for the sport. Giltinan Trophy Championship With six past champions and a host of world and international championship-winning challengers all vying for the title in similar boats, the racing on Sydney Harbour will be a "War On Water" during the seven-race regatta. Previous champions are: The recently crowned NSW and former Giltinan champion Michael Coxon is the early favourite to win back the crown he previously held in 2006 and 2007. Coxon is joined by last year's winning Giltinan champion crewmen Aaron Links and Trent Barnabas in the Thurlow Fisher Lawyers-sponsored skiff he campaigned in 2008. Aside from the past Giltinan champions, there are eight skippers in the regatta who have won world championships in other sailing classes. Adam Binns Signs On For VOR Television Binns, formerly Commercial Director of Dutch television and production company, Off the Fence, takes up the Director of Television role for the 37-year old premier ocean race. Binns' professional background includes senior positions at ITV, BSkyB and TWI. Binns has worked in the television and film industry for 14 years on a range of projects including Formula One, UEFA Champions League and the Rugby World Cup. It will be a tough call, as the other three qualifiers would all make formidable opponents. Phil Robertson is from the same Auckland club, and used to be Tiller's skipper, David Gilmour of the host club is a firey newcomer who has nothing to lose, while Peter Nicholas is the big improver of the series, getting better every day. It was another day of "crash & burn" sailing, in a breeze that at times topped 30 knots, stretching the repair team, and the already battered fleet of boats. Phil Robertson, last year's winner of the event, knows he has a fight on his hands to join the elite group who have their name on the trophy twice. He is the highest ranked skipper in the regatta, at 25 on the world ladder, to Tiller's 66th place. Though he is new to international level match racing, the eyes of the sailing world are on David Gilmour, the son of a legend of the sport, Peter Gilmour, a former world champion and America's Cup skipper. He has proved to be feisty on the water, evoking memories of his father's younger days. Peter Nicholas is the big improver of the series, having sailed in this event twice before, but failed to do better than eighth on either occasion, but has produced a strong performance in this event. For LDIG the bid process started last year and final submissions for the European stopover were submitted in December 2009. Over 32 ports originally made submissions and now Galway has been shortlisted, however it is understood that given the success of the last event and now with the Government support, Ireland is well positioned. 54 entrants started Day 3 of racing, with champagne sailing conditions - 15knts from the south with good chop. By Race 8 (the third of the day and last of the regatta) this had almost reached the upper limits of sailing, gusting 25 knts, and nearly half the fleet were back on the beach. Race 8 was particularly hard, with Purdie and Paul Rhodes battling it out for the finish. After 8 races of the NZ OK Nationals and Interdominions, provisional results (top five): 1.
