Scheidt and Drozdovskaya Clean Up On Lake Garda
After three days of intense and testing wind that threw out some exceptional competition the final day was plagued with light winds that forced the competition to come to an early ending. But for Scheidt and Drozdovskaya the damage had been done as both sailors, who have sailed at nine Olympic Games between them, went through the five race series undefeated. In the 111-boat Laser fleet Scheidt rolled back the years to sweep past his younger opponents. Emil Cedergardh (SWE) finished one point behind the Brazilian whilst ISAF Sailing World Cup Miami victor Jesper Stalheim (SWE) came through in third. The Laser Radial Women's fleet featured 89 sailors all aiming to take gold. Drozdovskaya used all of her experience to control the fleet and take gold ahead of Michelle Broekhuizen (NED) and Daphne Van Der Vaart (NED). Emirates Team New Zealand's Wing Sail Damaged
The incident occurred as the team were preparing to fit their wingsail to the platform of AC72 catamaran in gusty conditions. The 40m wing-sail needs to lifted into place by a crane - an extremely delicate process at the best of times. A Team New Zealand spokesperson said as they were hoisting the sail, a big gust of wind blew across the the Viaduct, picking up the sail. The leading edge of the hard sail is understood to have clipped the side of the main building of Emirates Team New Zealand's base, ripping the skin and causing some rig damage. The damage has been described as relatively minor - more of a nuisance than catastrophic - and the team are expecting to be back out on the water on Thursday. --Dana Johannsen in the New Zealand Herald
Sonar World Champion John Robertson Goes Solo
Robertson made history when he became the first skipper in the history of disabled Sonar sailing to helm his crew to back-to-back IFDS World titles in 2005 and 2006. He, Hannah Stodel and Steve Thomas also have two World Championship silver and two bronze medals to their credit. Robertson joins fellow British Sailing Team teammates, Helena Lucas and Megan Pascoe, on the 2.4mR Worlds entry list. -- Gerald New in Sailweb
Begnet's Boat-Building Currach Project Bound For Dalkey Island
The Begnet's Boats Project is the vision of local resident Liz Murray who was inspired to bring the community together in a creative approach and to reflect the rich maritime heritage of Dalkey and local saint of St. Begnet. There are two churches in her name, one located in the town and the other on the small island lying some 300m offshore. Murray has assigned a team to construct the pair of 'racing' currachs and they are to be led by boat-builder Mark Reddon. The highlight of the venture will be a parade of the boats which are to be carried upside down, as is the traditional manner, from Castle Street, the town's main street to the coast at Coliemore Harbour. From there the currachs, to be named 'Naomh Beagnait 1 & 2' will ceremoniously be rowed if not raced! across Dalkey Sound to the island, where the first reference to St. Begnet on the island dates to 700 A.D. Gathering The Gaffers
Another technique is finding some anniversary of recognisable significance, and building an event around it. The word is that the Irish Cruising Club are going to have a Octogintaquinquessimal Cruise-in-Company in southwest Ireland next year to celebrate the 85th Anniversary of the founding of the club in Glengarriff on July 14th 1929. Anyone suggesting that if they could just hang on for another fifteen years, then they could have a real mega-celebration for the Centenary, is sharply reminded that the club has a very significant membership cohort of extremely senior seniors in a hurry, and they want to Do It Now. Meanwhile, it seems the notion of a Golden Jubilee cruise this summer for the Old Gaffers Association in the form of a rolling circuit of Britain with two stopovers in Ireland, and boats joining and leaving as they please, is proving popular. Sign-ups for the Dublin visit from May 31st to June 4th have already gone through the fifty mark, with the style being set by some fine big cutters such as Brandaen from the Netherlands, Annabel J from the Solent, and Adrian 'Stu' Spence's 1875-vintage Pilot Cutter Madcap from Strangford Lough. This year there'll be a chance to see the restored local fleet of Cork Harbour One Designs in action at the Cobh Traditional Sail Regatta from June 28th to 30th. Whether or not we'll see any of them making the scene for the first time ever in Dublin Bay with the Old Gaffer events four weeks earlier is probably mostly a matter of logistics. Solo Skipper Detained Under The Mental Health Act
The sailor, who has not been identified, was spotted having trouble off Bexhill on Friday morning. Dover coastguard began monitoring erratic radio communications from the sailor, who had drifted the 36ft yacht dangerously close to the shore. When the RNLI reached the 65-year-old man, he refused to make contact with them. Eventually the coastguard negotiated with the skipper but the lifeboat crew stood down after he refused all assistance. The coastguard continued to monitor the yacht and later received a Mayday alert when she ran aground at 8pm. The RNLI struggled to reach the yacht due to the low tide and breaking surf. The sailor was eventually rescued at around 10.45pm, when he was taken to hospital and detained under the Mental Health Act.
Annalise Murphy Claims Most Prestigious Irish Sailing Award
Murphy fought off stiff competition from Volvo Ocean Race winner Damian Foxall and her fellow Olympic teammates Peter O'Leary and David Burrows to win the most sought-after award of the Irish sailing community for the second consecutive year. The association awarded a total of seven awards and praised all 25 nominees for their achievements. Among the award recipients was 10-time Paralympian John Twomey. Twomey sailed at the London 2012 Paralympics marking his 10th consecutive Games, a record for any Irish Olympic or Paralympic athlete. Twomey was presented with the ISA President's Award in recognition of his substantial contribution to sailing, not only by representing his country for the 10th time but for his efforts in developing sailing for people with disabilities. The Youth Sailor of the Year award, supported by Dun Laoghaire Harbour Company, was bestowed to 16 year old Finn Lynch from Carlow. Lynch has risen through the ranks of the ISA Olympic Pathway Programme and the Laser Radial sailor had a tremendous season of competition in 2012. New to this year's awards is the collaboration between the ISA and Mitsubishi Motors for the ISA Mitsubishi Motors Club of the Year Award. This award was taken home by the Royal St George Yacht Club having made its mark last year when it hosted 350 14-19 year old sailors from 63 nations for the ISAF Youth Sailing World Championships on Dublin Bay last July. Deservedly winning the Volunteer of the Year, supported by A Stitch in Time, award was Eoghan Lavelle who has spent the past 60 years volunteering for Scouting Ireland. The final two categories included Instructor of the Year, supported by Parasol Sun Care, and Training Centre of the Year, supported by Honda Marine, which were won by Claire Lambert from Dublin and The Oysterhaven Centre in Cork respectively.

Ben Hodgson-Kerry will be responsible for all the wholesale retail accounts within Southern England territories. Ben comes with a wealth of experience having worked within the marine market since 2006 and hence brings a huge amount of knowledge and expertise to his new role. Ben is also water-sports enthusiast in this spare time, and therefore has a deeper appreciation of the industry. Ben will be based from the Henri Lloyd Lymington showroom. ------------------------------------- The Rotary Aquaspeed brand was impressed with the returns that it received as a sponsor of the 2011/12 Clipper Round the World Yacht Race . As a result, Rotary Aquaspeed will renew its position as Official Timekeeper of the race. According to a statement, Rotary reported a significant growth in sales during 2012 aided by exposure the Aquaspeed brand received through with the Clipper Race partnership. In addition the company embarked on a highly successful television advertising campaign - the first in 20 years - highlighting its involvement with the Clipper Race and encouraging viewers to achieve something extraordinary in line with the ethos of the race. Activation of the sponsorship utilised brand ambassadors on the last Clipper Race. The strategy shows how customers and retailers across the world can be engaged by captivating online content - two crew members taking part in the race were followed and their stories communicated. ------------------------------------- Almost 23,000 people visited the 51st Oslo International Boat Show (Sjoen for Alle), which closed on Sunday, March 17. This year's show was held in a new venue - Telenor Arena in Fornebu. Both the exhibitors and organiser Norboat were satisfied after 22,500 people (30,000 in 2012) visited the five-day show, according to a press release. Compared with 2011, the last time the show was held in Lillestrom, visitor numbers were up by around 3,500 during the last five days. "If business development goes according to the signals we've had from the show, then we'll have a very good boating season in 2013," says Norboat managing director Erlend Prytz. Around 200 boats from 140 exhibitors were on display at this year's show, and several of the largest companies reported growing consumer interest. On from 1-5 May, the revamped 2013 event has been overhauled by organisers, who claim to have put together an "activity-packed nautical week", to run over five days instead of the previous nine. Two other marine events - the International Yachting Forum and Superyacht Brokerage and Charter Show - will run alongside the boat show. ------------------------------------- The British Marine Federation (BMF) has appointed two leading figures from the training and education sector as directors of the BMF South West. Adrian Bevin of South Devon College and Adam Corney of Plymouth University were voted onto the board at the region's recent AGM. Adrian Bevin is responsible for the development of South Devon College's marine academy at Noss Marina, Kingswear. The water-based outdoor education and training centre offers a range of nationally recognised courses, including marine engineering and boat maintenance. Adam Corney is the marine commercial director at Plymouth University, and is responsible for creating, maintaining and developing partnerships with commercial marine sector businesses on behalf of the university. Formerly employed by the BMF, he brings a wealth of knowledge, experience and contacts to the board. ------------------------------------- German orthopaedic prosthetics firm OttoBock has acquired an 80 per cent share in Finnish superyacht builder Baltic Yachts. OttoBock, which also makes carbonfibre mobility products, will share with Baltic its know-how in the carbonfibre technology. ------------------------------------- Sailors and event organisers who want to develop important commercial skills, including how to raise and manage sponsorship, have the opportunity to participate in this new series of one-day training courses, the first of which will be hosted at the Royal Southern Yacht Club, Hamble, Hampshire, on 18th May. "Sailing provides companies with a wide range of choices when it comes to promoting themselves," says David Fuller Fuller, the Marketing Director of digital sports marketing agency Pilote Media, "and sailsport can deliver value for local companies, through to global brands. Sadly though, sailors and event organisers often fail to raise sponsorship because they are missing basic skills or they have the wrong or dated attitudes. "The nature of sponsorship has changed and companies compare a wide variety of marketing options before writing a cheque. Sailing could be missing out on sponsorship to other sports which adopt a more polished and commercial approach." The Royal Southern Yacht Club will host the event as part of its commitment to developing the sport of sailing in the UK.
