Contributions welcome, send to A Major Upset From Dutch Student Team In Efg Bank Sailing Arabia - The Tour After taking the risky tactics of splitting from the rest of the fleet and heading inshore in the early hours of this morning, the Dutch student team led by Kay Heemskerk had extended away at one point by more than 10 miles - impressive on a leg that ended up being less than 60 miles from start to finish, after it was shortened. The result leaves TU Delft solidly in fourth place overall, while Bertrand Pace's team on AISM continues to lead albeit with only a 4.25 point advantage over second-placed BAE Systems going into tomorrow's final sprint leg of EFG Bank Sailing Arabia - The Tour, from Mussanah Marina back to The Wave, Muscat. With just one leg to go, the crews are all resting well tonight, the top three on their guard to ensure that another upset can't happen before the fleet reaches The Wave Muscat, the state of the art marina that is the final destination of this flagship sailing event for the Gulf region. "We sincerely hope to be back in 2014 with a new elite international event for our beautiful region of Engadin. The St. Moritz Match Race has become a favourite among the international fleet of champions competing on the Alpari World Match Racing Tour each year, both for the hospitality and the quality of the racing. This event allowed us to put St. Moritz and Engadin on the international sailing map." During its 10 years on the international sailing calendar, the St. Moritz Match Race has crowned some of greatest champions of sailing as 'King of the Mountain' including Ed Baird, Mathieu Richard, Torvar Mirsky, Adam Minoprio and Ian Williams. The event has also made it possible for some of the best Swiss match racing teams, including the Monnin brothers (3rd in 2007), to compete on the world stage. Double Olympic Gold medalists Roman Hagara and Hans-Peter Steinacher, the Sports Directors for the Red Bull Youth America's Cup, made the selections after closely monitoring the teams on and off the water during the two back-to-back selection weeks. Race results made up 60-percent of the selection criteria. Teams were also evaluated on professionalism on and off the water, as well as on the training programs they have set up to develop their skills further between now and September. The five teams selected today have now qualified to race in the Red Bull Youth America's Cup from September 1-4, in a fleet that includes five additional youth crews supported by current America's Cup teams. He now enters the Indian Ocean and heads north for the final 5000 miles of his voyage to complete his circumnavigation at his start port in Mumbai, India. His expected eta in Mumbai is 1st April and on arrival he will be the first Indian to complete a solo non stop circumnavigation of the world. Three years ago, Mhadei, which was built by Aquarius Fibreglas Ltd in Goa, India, was sailed solo around the world by Commander Dilip Donde, Indian Navy, with stops in Australia, the Falklands and Cape Town, thus becoming the first Indian solo circumnavigator. Help Finish The Man On The River Documentary Giacomo was filmed and photographed throughout his journey and now he and director Paulo Muran are making the two-hour documentary film showing his adventure. They have a long road ahead of them, what with seven terrabytes of footage to sort through. They need to raise a total of US$15,000 to finish the film, $2,180 of which has already been raised. In the competitive 59-boat Doublehander fleet, Pete Gray and Rachel Rhodes's Scorpion won the first race, then Matt Biggs and John Hackett's Merlin Rocket who took the second. The light winds made it hard for anyone to gain an edge over the fleet, making it very competitive for a wide range of classes. In the end a 4,3 score by Ibbotson and Stewart's National 12 was enough to give them overall fleet victory ahead of Mike and Liz Senior's GP14 and Jack Banks and Penny Jeffcoate's Scorpion. Fireball World Champion Tom Gillard with Simon Potts finished in 6th, the first trapeze boat in the division. Former 505 World Champion Ian Pinnell with Tim Needham was 12th in the fleet. Held in fond memory of popular local sailor Steve Nicholson, the event was another big fundraising success for Asthma UK, represented by Elspeth Dando who thanked organisers and competitors for raising vital funds for the charity. Barnes took the first race by 36 seconds, and in the second Middleton came back on the second beat. The wind was shifty and Middleton did really well to keep the game close. The Quarter Finals were unable to be completed due to a lack of wind, so the top four were straight into Semi Finals when the boats left the dock around midday in search of wind. Barnes chose to sail Pierce but lost the first race by 9 seconds. Barnes then took the next two races and secured his spot in the Finals. This left Gilmour and Middleton to sail off in the other Semi Final. Gilmour won the first, Middleton the second and it was down to the wire! Middleton had a strong and convincing win by 42 seconds to secure the second spot in the Finals. After a frustrating start to the day towing boats around and searching for wind the Race Committee ended up back in front of the Squadron in a great afternoon northerly breeze. Final Placings 1. Finglas Rqys Resident Coach His personal career embraces numerous stories of success as an individual sailor and a specialised coach which all started when he first leant to master the sport on the confined waters on Sandgate's Cabbage Tree creek before winning the 1983 Australian Sabot championship at the tiller of his snub-nose Dinghy Hot Pursuit. Surprisingly during his primary school years he had shown the talent to fulfil a promising career in swimming but thankfully elected to master sailing free with the wind winning his second Australian championship in the international 420 class in 1986. This result set the benchmark for Finglas to pursue a career in coaching and was destined for success when he was invited to be a guest coach with the strong American team at the Barcelona Olympics. The now three time Olympic coach capped a personal career highlight when the Australian crew of Queensland's Dan Fitzgibbon and his New South Wales crew mate Liesel Tesch won the Scud 18 class Gold Medal at the Paralympics in London. He has the gifted skill to encourage average club sailors into winning World championships. and he is not the type of person to stand taller than his students. '"You simply cannot achieve the results without their individual commitment to tough it out and do the hard yards". He said. His recent appointments approved by incoming Commodore Kevin Miller will initially focus on encouraging the younger generation to happily discover sailing. "The Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron has rolled out the welcome mat with first time sailors joining the "Little Tackers' program in the Optimist dinghies". Finglas said This program provides an important introduction to the sport while also showcasing the Squadrons initiative to develop a World class youth program including a segment of Americas Cup type match racing in the internationally accepted 6m Elliott class. "Initially my coaching role will focus on our youth and provide them with the encouragement to enter class racing we are also interested in hosting multi class racing for Sabot, Heron, Mirror, and Graduate dinghies with the junior all boat fleet" Finglas added. "I am encouraged by the passion of Kevin Miller who will commence a second term as Commodore later this year". His vision to provide a fully rigged Farr 40 aptly named Keel Train which will be involved as the nautical class room to extend the youth development program into the ocean racing arena strongly supports the intention of the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron to capitalise of the Australian sailing team success at the London Olympics. -- Ian Grant Remembering Charlie Leighton The first time I remember really talking with Charlie was on a tour of his private gym. My two Olympic teammates and I had been invited up to the sunny, open room that housed several machines I'd never seen before. "Try this one out," he said, throwing me yet another one of his infectious grins. "See how much of your body weight you can lift." I stepped/sat onto the thing, grabbed the handles, and lifted.Charlie Leighton headshot "13, wow! I've put most of the Sailing Team members on this, and so far that's a record. Great job!" He pumped my hand, and I walked away feeling like I'd really accomplished something. For an almost-retired Olympic athlete, it was nice to be reminded that I could still compete with the young upstarts. So it would've been a memorable moment, even if he hadn't greeted me for the next few years as "13! How're you doing?" Charlie went to the great regatta in the sky this past weekend, and he will leave behind a gaping hole in many lives. Almost single-handedly he created the medalist fundraising program for Olympic sailing that will live on in his absence, because (in the words of former Olympic Sailing Committee Chairman Dean Brenner), he "taught us how to do it." Charlie was always Charlie, no matter whether he was speaking before a board of directors, riding in a powerboat watching racing, or piloting his own plane up the coast of New England. Friendly, caring, personal, with just enough of a glint in his eye that it was all too easy to discount the wisdom of his words. He'll leave behind a large gap of warmth in many lives.
