Le Cam, Golding and Stamm Arrive In Les Sables D'olonne
Jean Le Cam crossed the finish line of the Vendee Globe at 12h:14m:58s UTC (local time France minus 1hr) this Wednesday 6th February to end a gale stricken final passage across the Bay of Biscay and secure fifth place overall after a long, protracted battle with English skipper Mike Golding, an adversary which he has enjoyed many previous encounters with, not least the 2004-5 edition of the race when Le Cam took second ahead of Golding's third.
Le Cam's elapsed time is 88 days 00 hours 12 min58 sec. His average speed over the theoretical course of 24,394 miles is 11.5kts . He actually sailed 27575 miles on the water at an average speed of 13.1 kts.
He finished 9 days 21hrs 56 mins 18 sec after race winner François Gabart (MACIF) and 1 day 21hrs 09 mins after fourth placed Jean-Pierre Dick.
* When British skipper Mike Golding on Gamesa crossed the finish line of the Vendee Globe at 18h 38m 26s UTC this Wednesday 6th February he took sixth place. He became the first sailor ever to finish three Vendee Globe races and finished just 6 hours 23 mins and 28secs behind his French rival Jean Le Cam who he has been duelling with over fifth place since early December.
Le Cam and Golding have a history as rivals including in the 2004-5 Vendee Globe when the Frenchman took second and Golding third, but their courses have crossed many times over the last dozen years on major solo and short handed ocean races.
Golding's elapsed time is 88d 06h36min 26s. His average speed over the theoretical 24,393 miles course is 11.5kts. He actually sailed 27,281 miles on the water at an average speed of 12.9 kts. He finishes 10d 04h 19m and 46s behind the race winner François Gabart.
* On Wednesday, at 10.30PM after a last furious battle through the Bay of Biscay, Bernard Stamm (Cheminees Poujoulat) arrived back in Les Sables d'Olonne. The Swiss skipper eventually managed to complete his circumnavigation after being disqualified for receiving outside assistance. Many people had gathered along the channel to greet him, just like they had for the other Vendee Globe skippers. Stamm waited until Mike Golding started sailing through the Sables d'Olonne Channel to let the British sailor enjoy the public's warm welcome.

Volvo Ocean Race To Stop At Newport, Rhode Island
The Volvo Ocean Race has visited the United States in every edition since 1989-90
The Race will reach Newport, one of the world's sailing capitals, around May 2015 after a stop in Itajaí, Brazil. From Newport, the teams will sail across the Atlantic for the final legs around Europe.
The Volvo Ocean Race has visited the United States in every edition since 1989-90 but despite Newport's great sailing heritage, it has never before had Host Port status.
Rhode Island is known as the Ocean State and for over 50 years Newport was the home of the America's Cup. The city hosted a hugely successful stop on the America's Cup World Series in 2012, with 65,000 people visiting over the four-day racing period.
Newport, a popular New England tourist destination, is the sixth Host Port for the Volvo Ocean Race 2014-15 to be revealed so far. The Race will start in Alicante, Spain and visit Recife in north east Brazil. Later in the Race, the teams will race to Auckland in New Zealand before rounding Cape Horn and making a second Brazilian stop in Itajaí and then heading to Newport.
The Race will finish in the Swedish city of Gothenburg. The remaining stopovers on the 2014-15 route will be revealed over the coming weeks.
* Volvo Ocean Race organizers wanted to come to Baltimore in May 2015 as part of their 'round-the-world competition but had one request: Could it share the spotlight with the Preakness Stakes or bump the Triple Crown horse race to another date?
The city said thanks, but no way.
So Tuesday, the only U.S. stopover of the Volvo went instead to Newport, R.I.
"We were shocked," said Robert Housman, executive director of Ocean Racing USA, the Baltimore bidder. "It would be discouraging to work hard on something and lose, but clearly they moved the finish line. We won on the merits of our bid and that's a fact."
Ryan O'Doherty, a spokesman for Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, called the outcome "unfortunate. The city and state partners worked in good faith."
Moving the Preakness would be like paving the Inner Harbor. The race originated at Pimlico in 1873 and has been run there every year since 1909. It has been the middle leg of thoroughbred racing's Triple Crown for more than seven decades.
Volvo officials said scheduling the 10 ports over nine months of racing is a juggling act with very tight windows of opportunity.
"We were coming at the wrong time for the city and they couldn't change the date," said Jon Bramley, Volvo's spokesman. -- Candy Thomson in The Baltimore Sun

Revamped Wild Thing to Debut at Sydney Harbour Regatta
Wild Thing is just one of a strong field of grand prix IRC entries expected on the start line for the eighth running of NSW's largest annual regatta.
Following on from MHYC's regatta, Wharington's program for 2013 includes the Club's Property Industry Foundation charity regatta, then the Brisbane Gladstone, Sydney Gold Coast and Brisbane Keppel races. Telcoinabox Airlie Beach and Audi Hamilton Island Race Weeks are also on the agenda. In 2014, he will compete on the Mediterranean and Caribbean circuits.
Marcus Blackmore's all-conquering TP52 Hooligan, which was beaten on count back at the Festival of Sails in January, costing him his Audi IRC Australian Championship crown, is among the high-profile IRC entries.
The Sydney yachtsman and crew, along with the other top TP52 crews, will sharpen their skills in the inaugural TP52 Southern Cross Cup at the end of this week in Melbourne.
Among the myriad 24 classes/divisions, including production boats and one-designs, Middle Harbour Yacht Club's signature event will also host the 2013 Sydney 38 Nationals, in which in excess of 15 boats are expected to compete. The Nationals will commence one day earlier than the main event, on Friday 8 March.
Take a step back in time with the replica historic 18 footers and classic yachts. 'The 18's' crews even wear identical rugby jumpers to those of the original crews and are just as competitive. The classic yachts will feature the likes of Tiare Tomaszewski's Maris, originally owned by her famous grandfather, marine artist Jack Earl, and named for Tiare's mother. -- Di Pearson
Record Entry Set for RORC Caribbean 600
In the Canting Keel Class Mike Slade's British 100ft Maxi, ICAP Leopard, is back after a substantial refit and is a hot favourite for line honours. If the conditions are right and Leopard's stellar crew perform well, the Maxi could realistically eclipse the course record of 40 Hours, 20 minutes, 2 seconds set by George David's Rambler 100 back in 2011.
However Leopard could face stiff competition just for class honours. Ron O'Hanley's American Cookson 50, Privateer, is back for a third attempt to win the RORC Caribbean 600 Trophy. Privateer came third overall in 2010 and had a fantastic race last year before a 10% penalty put them out of the running for the overall title and O'Hanley's crew will consider this year's race as unfinished business.
With 16 confirmed entries from six different countries, the largest class racing in the RORC Caribbean 600 is IRC Zero and among them American Mini Maxi, Bella Mente, can be considered a favourite for the overall trophy.
Also racing in Class Zero the French Maxi, Med Spirit, is a fine example of the international flavour of the RORC Caribbean 600. Racing under the burgee of the Societe Nautique de Marseille and owned by Didier Lacombe, the 92-foot racing yacht has been chartered by The Russian Yachting Federation and the crew will include 15 of its members, skippered by Russian round the world sailor, Vladimir Kulinichenko. The CEO of the Russian Sailing Federation, Oscar Konyukhov, will be part of the crew, as well as a host of world-class French sailors from the Vendee Globe and the Figaro Class.
This year's race has nine yachts over 90ft in length and two magnificent schooners will battle it out for the first time offshore. With an overall length of 181 feet the Dykstra designed schooner, Adela, is an impressive sight. However Adela's arch-rival Athos is 203 feet which is the largest yacht competing this year. Adela won the Spirit of Tradition Class in 2012 by some margin but Athos poses a serious threat. -- Trish Jenkins

Dun Laoghaire Revealed as Port Of Call In 'Route Des Princes'
Originally destined for Cork Harbour the route revealed today instead names the sole Irish port on the voyage as the East coast port on Dublin Bay.
The Route des Princes is a new round-Europe competitive sailing event open to all multihull boats over 50ft. The organisers are owners of large multihulls, ocean racing enthusiasts and major players in the European food-processing industry, whose aim is to give this event popular appeal. The intention is to make each stage of the Route des Princes a local festival, a celebration of coastline and rural environment, practical skills and the art of living.
The event will start from Puerto America, the magnificent new marina development in the Spanish port of Valencia. The grand finale, organized to coincide with the Entre Terre et Mer" (Twixt Land and Sea) festival, is programmed for 30 June 2013 in the Bay of Morlaix, Brittany.

Portugal Bans Olympic Windsurfer Over Secret Pregnancy
Carolina Borges travelled to Britain as part of the Portugal team but then sent an email during the Games in July saying she was quitting before her RS-X event had even started.
"The Portuguese Institute of Sports and Youth accepted our recommendation and has forbidden the athlete from ever representing Portugal again," said Olympic committee head Vicente Moura.
Brazil-born Borges represented Brazil at the Athens Olympics in 2004 but later joined Portugal's squad.
The windfsurfer is married to U.S. sailor Mark Mendelblatt, who competed in London in the Star class in the sailing regatta off the south coast of England.
Moura said that the decision was made after an investigation proved that the athlete was pregnant at the time of the Games and failed to inform the national Olympic committee as required.
Southern Trust Classic Yacht Regatta
The major regatta of the New Zealand classic sailing calendar commences on Friday. Up to sixty boats, all classics and modern classics, have entered, and anticipate serious racing, excellent shoreside racing, and the chance of claiming a Pacific Island holiday prize that is almost as glamorous as the boats themselves.
The feature spot prize is a holiday in Noumea, staying at the Ramada Plaza, and with flights courtesy of Aircalin.
Other supporters are Altex Coatings, Beacon Sails, Lombardini, Coast NZ, Mt Gay Rum, Events Clothing, Explore NZ and Yamaha Outboards.
The forecast is for clear skies and light breezes on Friday and Saturday, increasing and shifting South-West on Sunday.
The entrant list includes Thelma, Rawhiti, Waitangi, Rainbow, Little Jim, Prize, Jessie Logan, Wairiki, Katrina II as well as for dozens of other much loved and recognised boats.
The 2013 event will have a similar format to that of 2012: race HQ will be a marquee in front of the Viaduct Events Centre, where the fleet will be berthed and where spectators are welcome to watch from the sidelines, and here will be a shore based collection of smaller classics and dayboats to view.
Three days of challenging harbour racing are designed to allow for early finishes and plenty of socialising at daily prizegivings.
