At 5:30 this morning, Virbac-Paprec 3 picked up a mooring buoy in the harbour, protected from the prevailing winds and the sea On today's Vendee Globe Live, Jean-Pierre said he was exhausted. He was planning to dive and check to the boat so he could further secure it in face of an incoming gale expected between late Thursday lasting until Friday. He also indicated that he had used his engine, which broke the engine seal, in order to finalize his approach to the buoy. He must write a report to the jury to explain the facts. A second report will be issued to specify the start time. The jury will then decide his fate. Re-start on Sunday? The big question is when will he be able to resume his route to Les Sables d'Olonne? A potential weather window opens in just over 48 hours. "I set myself a limit of 25 knots of wind " he explained. In the Bay of Biscay, this weekend, the weather should improve. Virbac-Paprec 3 is currently 291 miles from Les Sables d'Olonne. If he returned to the race on Sunday morning, realistically he could arrive in the Vendee on Monday night. Katusha (RUS) were on fire and dominated the day winning the first two races and making a great recovery in the last to finish third, even after picking the un-favoured left side up the first beat and being buried at the top mark. Chris Bake's Team Aqua (GBR) was hot on Katusha's tail, finishing second in both the opening two races and sixth in the third. But a collision in the final race resulted in a dramatic end, seeing the American team's scoop rip away from the hull. A protest was lodged by Ironbound's new tactician Paul Goodison and after much debate in the protest room, Team Aqua were disqualified from race three and given three additional penalty points, dropping them from second to sixth overall. Ironbound was awarded redress leaving them third in the overnight standings. Artemis Racing won the final race of the day after what had been an indifferent start for Swedish team. In a further incident between Team Italia and RUS 7 the Russian team were given three penalty points for damage. Sailing fans around the world will be able to watch the stadium racing as it happens on the online live video stream enhanced by SAP analytics and including expert commentary from each venue. The Host Venue tender process for 2014 will open shortly, with potentially up to five new venue slots available, due to venue deals coming to the end of their initial terms. 2013 Extreme Sailing Series Calendar Act 1: Muscat, Oman 5-8 March Day 1 of each Act is the official Media Day, followed by three days of stadium racing where the event opens to the public. In Cardiff and Rio de Janeiro all 4 days of racing will be public, with a non-scoring media day before the event publicly opens. 11 Countries Represented at Red Bull Youth America's Cup Trials A British team, the GBR Youth Challenge, has been added to the roster to take the place of the previously invited French Youth Team, who now qualify directly for September's event after gaining support from the French America's Cup World Series entry, Energy Team. The Red Bull Youth America's Cup, scheduled September 1-4, 2013, begins with the Selection Series in San Francisco in February. With the goal of ensuring the best of the best are on the starting line of the main event, the Selection Series will narrow the field through two rigorous training workshop and regatta sessions from February 9-15 and February 18-24, 2013. Emirates Team New Zealand, Artemis Racing, China Team and Energy Team have all indicated they are supporting teams for the Red Bull Youth America's Cup. Youth crews with the support of an America's Cup World Series team are eligible for direct entry to September's event via the Regatta Director. ORACLE TEAM USA, the current holder of the America's Cup, conducted its own training camp before Christmas to select which American teams it would support. USA45 Racing (representing the USA), and American Youth Sailing Force (representing San Francisco) will both spend the coming months training for the Red Bull Youth America's Cup under the stewardship of the American Cup defender. The Selection Series in February will be held on the same AC45 wing sail catamarans the youth crews will race in September. These are also the same boats the America's Cup teams race in the AC World Series. At a little after 2000 EDT on the 2012 race's third night, June 17, watch-stander Nicholas Weare, based in Bermuda, received an email from the race's consulting physician in Massachusetts. He promptly reported it to race officials: "Message received from Dr. Barbara Masser advising that she lost satphone contact 7:49 EDT while in communication with Seabiscuit regarding a 38-year-old insulin dependent male who has not eaten or drunk for 24 hours, with elevated blood sugar and appears confused." These were the first two of more than two dozen emails (not to mention many satphone and radio calls) sent over the next seven hours concerning the serious problem on board Seabiscuit, a J-46 in the race's Double-Handed Division. The effort to assist and, eventually, evacuate the seasick sailor, Nathan C. Eight nations competed in this year edition of the Gold Cup with two new comers the 5.5m Class Association is happy to welcome: The host country, Curacao and coming back to 5's racing, the U.S.A. Weather and wind conditions were excellent with easterly winds averaging 16-18 knots. The biggest challenge for the competitors was to get used to and play with the strong current pushing the boats in direction to Santa Barbara beach. At the end, mastering the conditions and the competitions, the Norwegian crew of Artemis (NOR 57) composed of Kristoffer Spone, Johan Barne and Christen Horn-Johannesen won the coveted trophy being the first boat winning three races. The Classic and the Evolution Cups will take place later this year during the European Championship that will take place in Benodet (France) in September. Cowes Classics Week - 15‐19 July 2013 The Sunbeam fleet have been stalwart supporters of CCW from the outset. This year they are celebrating their 90th Anniversary and will sail for the Queen Victoria Jubilee Cup which was given to the Royal London Yacht Club in 1886 by Queen Victoria and disappeared for almost a century until re‐discovered in 1973. They are expecting a record turnout with some boats coming up from Falmouth. Indicative of the now well‐established reputation of CCW, a number of Howth 17 Footers will be coming over from Dublin Bay. An 1898 design, they are probably the oldest racing one‐design keelboat class in the world designed by W. Herbert Boyd who was Commodore of Howth Sailing Club for 52 years. They sail a regular match race with the Gaerloch fleet from the Clyde in the local class in alternate years. The Howth 17s will race with the Revival Old Gaffer fleet. In addition to our regular fleets of 6mR, Darings, Sunbeams, XODs, Bembridge One Designs and Loch Longs we are expecting some of our occasional attendees ‐ Dragons, Mermaids, Squibs, Yarmouth One Design, Bembridge Redwings. -- David Elliott RORC Rating Office Takes to the Road with Cruiser/Racing Seminars at Local Clubs Sailors have different priorities & concerns about racing. The idea for the seminars came from a survey run by the Rating Office last winter, which showed that sailors had many varied priorities and concerns about racing, either under Spinlock IRC or local handicap/PY. The Seminars are being presented by Mike Urwin, RORC's Technical Director, who explained: "These seminars will offer a discussion forum about improving turnouts generally; the advantages of dual scoring, class splits, types of courses, and any other issues relating to cruiser racing. They should also dispel some of the many myths surrounding IRC, such as the idea that it is only suitable for grand prix racers, which is very far from the truth!" Mike will also be explaining the highly practical initiative for 2013, the Limited Validity TCC, for those who might like to do one or two IRC events a year. In addition, members of the RYA Technical office will be attending at least one of the seminars to introduce the new National Handicap scheme for Cruisers (NHC). All are welcome The RORC Rating Office is urging all the individuals undertaking key roles at the local clubs to attend, such as the sailing secretary, club secretary, captain of racing and other flag officers; and of course the sailors, whether they usually race PY/ local handicap or Spinlock IRC. All are welcome. There are currently nine events scheduled between the end of January and the end of March, with venues stretching from the Isle of Wight on the South Coast to Inverkip on the Clyde in Scotland. The Palma event will take place just 3 days after the end of the IKA African Course Racing Championships, allowing sailors to attend both events with enough travel time in between, and to collect important points for the IKA world ranking within a short period. For overseas competitors it is a chance to take part in two high scoring events back to back to qualify for the upcoming IKA course racing world championships later in the year.
