Celebrating The Old Gaffer's 50th Birthday Peel Traditional Boat Weekend has been extended to a five days festival. Peel Sailing and Cruising Club will host the event and an exciting addition to the popular evening meals and entertainments is a Ceilidh at the Masonic Hall in Peel on Saturday evening which will provide visiting crews with a taste of Manx culture and a load of fun. Record entries, a packed, vibrant harbour and a parade of sail second to none will be supplemented by a series of shore-side activities and entertainments. These will include the ever popular QUICK AND DIRTY BOAT BUILDING COMPETITION & RACE, the hilarity and banter of the Prize Presentation, live music from local groups, street artists and Manx dancers. As the Parade of Sail has been moved to Friday, it will give skippers and crews of visiting boats a real chance to show off their carpentry skills and enter the boat building competition. The Wasps Flanker sets a new record just short of 12 seconds, beating the top sailor by about 0.27 seconds Visit the Musto stand (A100) to have a go at the Winch Grinding Challenge after 5pm on Thursday 17 January - if you can get under 15 seconds (men) or 18 seconds (women), the beers are on Musto. Round Barbados Series Back For A Third Run The event started in 1936 with five trading schooners racing for bragging rights to be the fastest vessel in local waters, which brought with it the ability to attract more business. Since being resurrected in 2011, the series has evolved to include another feature which has been dubbed the Two Restaurants Race. This year's race will proceed as usual with vessels going from Cruising Club to marks off Beach House on the West Coast and Tapas on the South on Saturday morning from 11 a.m. New to the programme this year is the Antigua Open Race, which has a main function of linking the Round Island Race to the Super Yacht Challenge in Antigua. Wednesday's 300-mile journey is hoped to bring some of the world's largest yachts to Barbados in the coming years. The Barbados Advocate: www.barbadosadvocate.com Rainer Holtorff RYA Yachtmaster of the Year 2012 Richard Falk RYA Training Manager said "This is the first time that the RYA Yachtmaster of the Year has been awarded to someone outside the UK, which demonstrates the truly global significance of the RYA Yachtmaster qualification". Rainer started sailing on Fjords near the Baltic Sea. Whilst studying in Hamburg he bought an old yacht which he sailed either single handed or with a small crew on the North Sea, the Baltic and the River Elbe. Rainer went on to skipper yachts around the European coast and across the Atlantic. In 2009 he founded the yacht delivery company Sailworkteam, and is currently skippering an ocean yacht JV53 'Tognum'. Candidates for the 2012 RYA Yachtmaster award were entered by the RYA's worldwide team of Yachtmaster examiners. The RYA Yachtmaster of the Year Trophy was donated by the Royal Institute of Navigation. The event will take place at the Tullett Prebon London Boat Show on Saturday 19th January, with Sir Chay Blyth attending. Race veterans coming from as far away as Australia, Hong Kong, New Zealand, USA and all across Europe. Most of the sailors were trained by Pete Goss, later appointed one of the skippers. Goss and Mike Golding are two of the skippers who will be absent from the reunion. The former is currently kayaking around Hobart and Golding is racing up the Atlantic on the final stretch of the Vendee Globe. The Boat Show reunion includes plans for an auction of Global Challenge memorabilia, in aid of Save the Children, plus screening of videos from the Challenge events, and a buffet dinner. Two ex-Global Challenge yachts, Challenger 3/Sarah, operated by The Tall Ships Youth Trust, and Catzero, managed by the sail training charity, CatZero, are also at the show on the marina berth M163/4. The organiser is sailing journalist Barry Pickthall who wrote the book 'No Guts - No Glory' on the event. Barry says: 'We have not managed to track down every crew member, so if you are still in contact with your crew-mates, please tell them, we don't want anyone to miss out!' The awards are sponsored by Boating Business, Matchtech and Ocean Safety. Seamark Nunn of Ipswich won the MTA's Retailer of the Year award. The family-‐run company celebrated 50 years in business in 2011. The MTA Personality of the Year award went to David Barrow of Barrow International. David is also Vice Chairman of the British Marine Federation's International Development Committee. The Chairman's Special Award was presented to Grant Hooper, Princess Yachts. The next generation of leaders in the UK marine industry was celebrated with Boating Business awards for Young Entrepreneur of the Year, which was awarded to Rob Cross of Southern Cross Yachts, and the Boating Business Scott Deverell Young Businessperson of the Year award, which went to Philip Marsh of Chatham Marine. The Boating Business Environment Award went to the Weymouth & Portland National Sailing Academy (WPNSA), while Yachtmail Chandlery won the Boating Business Boats.com Website Award. Peter Nash, Editor of Boating Business, was on hand to present the Boating Business awards and to congratulate the winners. The evening's final award was the much-‐anticipated Boating Business Lifetime Achievement Award, which was presented to Peter Methven OBE, who, amongst many other successes is a past president of the British Marine Federation. ------------------------------------ Bonnier Corp. today announced that Terry Snow, CEO, has elected to retire effective January 14, 2013. Snow will be succeeded by Dave Freygang, who recently served as Executive Vice President for Bonnier's Active Interest Division. Snow is retiring after serving six years as CEO of Bonnier Corp., and 28 years as CEO & Founder of World Publications, a company that Bonnier partnered with in 2006. Snow started World Publications in 1978 by creating WaterSki magazine, and oversaw the growth of the business to its current state with over 50 media brands, including Popular Science, Field & Stream and Parenting. Snow will continue his involvement at Bonnier Corp. as a member of the Board of Directors, in addition to being a shareholder. ------------------------------------ LDC Sailing is to take over production of the Laser 2000. Designer Phil Morrison has appointed LDC as the new license holder for the production and distribution the 2000 Class. LDC plan to produce new moulds and then initiate production, with the aim of having new boats ready to deliver from late spring onwards, from their Romsey base close to the M27 north of Southampton. First produced in 1998, production numbers for the 2000 have been between 30 and 40 boats per year recently. ------------------------------------ To follow up on last week's announcement for the UK with Bainbridge, Plastimo is gradually adding strong foothold in other strategic parts of Europe Plastimo President ‐also Alliance Marine President‐ Jean‐Paul Roche announces today the appointment of ON DECK b.v. The show is scheduled for 1-4 November ------------------------------------ Zhik has reinforced its commitment to youth sailing in Australia with the announcement of their partnership with Objective Australia who will challenge for the Red Bull Youth America's Cup (RBYAC) in 2013. The partnership between Zhik and Objective Australia ensures that the on water team will have access to the latest technical racing gear that is presently being used by the best senior America's Cup teams. In addition, Zhik will supply Objective Australia with on shore team wear. ------------------------------------ The Capitalize agency has been appointed to help the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) find a replacement for Skandia as naming rights sponsor of the British Sailing Team. Capitalize has previously worked with the RYA, the UK's national governing body for sailing and windsurfing, on a commercial strategy. The agency also has significant experience in sailing working with rights-holders including the Volvo Ocean Race. After sponsoring the team in the build-up to London 2012, Skandia opted not to extend its deal as title sponsor of the British team beyond the end of 2012. Letters To The Editor - * From James Struth: One point that I think the RORC is missing is the entry price to IRC racing and the kind of boats they are encouraging. There are many of us who only want to race but it is clear that in the small boat sizes (under 30ft) there are very few modern race boats that are competitive under IRC. For instance one can buy a really good SB20 for about £8,000 and enjoy exhilarating sailing but under IRC you do not stand a chance against an MG27 in similar condition with similar crew, the same is true of almost all sports boats that can be bought second hand and in good condition for under £15,000. I think that the RORC need to have a good look at what the competitive local sailors want to sail. It does not seem reasonable that only those that can afford a Kerr40 or similar can sail a race boat under IRC.... If the RORC supported grass roots racing this would undoubtedly filter up to bigger boats for those who catch the bug and find the money for the Kerr40 later in life (when the kids have left home!!!!) Featured Brokerage This has been the most successfull trimaran in the history of the ORMA Class. The boat dominated the class in the nineties, skippered by Loick Peyron under the Fujicolor name, winning the 97 and 99 ORMA championship as well as every single Grand Prix in 98. Later on it continued as a top placed boat named Belgacom. In 2004, named Academy and skippered by Knut Frostad, the boat won the Nokia Oops Cup over all, winning 9 out of 10 events during the season.
