Hamilton, Bermuda: The Argo Group Gold Cup starts on Tuesday and is the last opportunity for teams to gather World Championship points before the final Tour showdown at the Monsoon Cup in December. The top 8 in the Tour standings are all in Bermuda and leading the charge for points will be Ben Ainslie and his Team Origin who need an outstanding result here to boost their podium chances. Also in the scramble are the French Match Racing Team pair of Sebastien Col and Damien Iehl. Col has been struggling to find form this year with his season high point at Match Cup Sweden back in July. Damien Iehl has sailed fewer events but has performed well at each one, he could be the surprise package in Bermuda. Under pressure is double world and 2006 Gold Cup champion, Team Pindar's sponsored by Argo Group Ian Williams who knows all too well how harsh the format is in Bermuda after crashing out of the event before the quarter-finals in 2007. He needs points to keep his hopes of a third consecutive World Championship alive.
Chasing an unprecedented 5th Tour Championship is Australian Peter Gilmour. Currently lying 4th on the Tour leaderboard and gathering pace Gilmour isn't someone you'd choose to face in a fire fight. Another past Gold Cup Champion Mathieu Richard is back in Bermuda and is currently holding onto 3rd place on the Tour. Richard will be desperate to hold onto his podium position and looking to move up a step or two. 2008 runner up Adam Minoprio (NZL) will be looking to repeat last years performance or go one better and with it try to reclaim the number one spot on the Tour from friend and rival Torvar Mirsky (AUS). Mirsky will no doubt have other plans to keep himself as top dog by the end of the Argo Group Gold Cup.
Joining the top 8 from the Tour leaderboard will be 16 more teams, making the event the biggest entry field on the Tour. Amongst those looking to upset the status quo are a triumvirate of Sweden's best, defending Gold Cup Champion Johnie Berntsson (SWE), 2008 Match Cup Sweden Champion Mattais Rahm and 2007 Match Cup Sweden Champion Bjorn Hansen. The antipodeans are also out in force joining Torvar Mirsky, Adam Minoprio and Peter Gilmour are Kiwi's Phil Robertson and Reuben Corbett along with Australian Keith Swinton. Dave Perry (USA) and Chicago Match Race Centre prime mover Don Wilson (USA) lead the US charge. From the home nation past semi-finalist Blythe Walker is back and hungrier than ever to get another Bermudian name on the Gold Cup Trophy, as is Olympian Paula Lewin who is setting her sights on London 2012 in the Women's Match Racing discipline, what a start winning the Gold Cup would be.
Azzurra at the Louis Vuitton Trophy in Nice
Genoa, Italy. 4th October 2009. The Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (YCCS) is to launch a new challenge which will bring the Italian flag to international waters under the name Azzurra. YCCS Commodore Riccardo Bonadeo announced the participation of team Azzurra in the Louis Vuitton Trophy regatta, scheduled to be held in Nice from 7th to 22nd November 2009, to an audience of national and international press at the Genoa Boat Show this afternoon. The new Azzurra team will be led by YCCS member Giovanni Maspero of Joe Fly, under the responsibility of skipper and helmsman Francesco Bruni, supported by tactician Tommaso Chieffi and team manager Alessandra Sensini among others.
Giovanni Maspero has won several European titles in the Farr 40 and Melges 24 one-design classes as well as finished second in the Rolex Farr 40 World Championship in 2008 and in the Audi Melges 32 World Championship in September of this year. Francesco Bruni and Tommaso Chieffi are accomplished America's Cup sailors having amassed a total of six campaigns between them, while the rest of the crew has a range of match race and one-design sailing experience.
At the first event in Nice, racing will take place on equalized version 5 ACC boats supplied by the organization, and Azzurra will be competing against BMW Oracle Racing (USA), Emirates Team New Zealand (NZL), K-Challenge (FRA), Swedish Challenge Artemis (SWE), Synergy Russian Sailing Team (RUS), Team Origin (GBR) and Team French Spirit (FRA). The team will also evaluate participating in future World Sailing Team Association events co-organised by Louis Vuitton in 2010.

iShares Cup Final Showdown
The final event of the 2009 iShares Cup Sailing Series will reach its dramatic conclusion next week in Almeria, in the region of Andalucia, from Saturday, October 10th to Monday, October 12th.
The sixth event of the 2009 European circuit is set to be the biggest and best ever, with a huge public event village currently under construction, and a packed shoreside entertainment programme. But the biggest spectacle will be out on the water, as nearly six months of competition have set the scene for a nail-biting finale.
After five events and no fewer than 92 races, just one point separates the top three boats in the overall iShares Cup series. Current leaders Oman Sail Masirah, skippered by Pete Cumming, won three events in a row at Hyères, Cowes and Kiel. They are tied on 43 points with French crew Gitana Extreme - Groupe LCF Rothschild, who are lying second after winning two events, the series opener in Venice and the penultimate event in Amsterdam. Just one point behind these two is Oman Sail's stablemate Renaissance.
Franck Cammas' Groupama 40 lie in fourth on 33 points, and the overall results table is equally tight in the middle, with BT on 23 points, Team iShares on 22 and Holmatro and LUNA on 20 apiece.
An all-new Spanish team, 'Rumbo Almería' ('Go Almeria'), joins the sixth and final event of the 2009 iShares Cup sailing series in Almeria.
The boat is skippered by Fernando Echavarri, the reigning Tornado Olympic gold medallist, who represented Spain at both the Qingdao and Athens Games. He is a multiple world champion and is currently ranked No.2 in the world in the catamaran class, and most recently skippered the 2008-09 Volvo Ocean Race entry Telefonica Black.
He is joined by his Tornado crew Anton Paz, who sailed with Echavarri to both Olympic gold and World Championship victories. The pair were also jointly awarded the Rolex ISAF Sailor of the Year Award in 2005.
This tight-knit duo will be joined by experienced big boat sailor Jaime Arbones, who has been part of four America's Cup campaigns and twice competed in the Volvo Ocean Race. The fourth member of the team is Fernando Rivero, another top 'big boat' sailor who has won multiple IMS and ORC championships.

Currently two show-stopping legal actions are underway in the New York Supreme Court. The venue of the Match and the Rules under which it will be conducted.
A third, alleging breach of fiduciary duty by the Defender is believed to be imminent. That was signaled by CEO Russell Coutts in a statement released by the Challenger which said: 'The choice of RAK underscores SNG's abject failure in its responsibilities as Trustee of the America's Cup. It seems that the Defender is prepared to go to any lengths to make this America's Cup a travesty.'
If such an action were to be launched, then it would fall to Golden Gate YC's uber-lawyer, David Boies to stretch the skin tight over the Fiduciary Responsibility drum, and then beat a tune for Justice Shirley Kornreich. In this regard, Fudicial Duty refers to a person or trustee who holds a position of trust and is expected to act for that person, or trust's benefit.
Such action on this legal front, with the America's Cup, would be unprecedented.
A similar situation threatened in Formula 1 Motor Racing, and lasted less than 24 hours before the parties went behind closed doors and reached an agreement with their word body, the FIA.
While sailors weep, at a situation which could have several more years to run in the Courts, the rest of the sporting world dismisses the America's Cup with a mix of derision and opprobrium. And rightly so.
Light Winds & Wight Caipirinhas at the Royal Lymington
Lymington, England: The 'Indian Summer' sun was warm this late September weekend, and although the airs were light, the Royal Lymington Yacht Club held a fantastic regatta and a Wight Vodka Caipirinha party enjoyed by all.
The SB3s, meeting for the 4th of their Solent Series, completed four races, and the class winners were the four person crew appropriately named the Green Team, helmed by Marc Greenway and Libby Greenhalgh. The Royal Lymington YC's Equinox Regatta for 3 Handicap Classes, RS Elites and Folkboats could only complete three races due to the light airs, but up to 40 boats fully enjoyed the September sunshine with the following teams taking honours:
Class 1 - Peter Schofield & Crew in Zarafa
Class 2 - Stephen James & Crew in Jacobite
Class 3 - Richard Truscott & Crew in Unity
RS Elites - Ray Messrs Mitchell, Woodman & James in Fuzzy
Duck V11, and Nordic Folkboats - Edward Donald in Madelaine, from the Royal Solent YC.

Quarter the Lime lengthwise and then cut each quarter in half crosswise and place into your glass. Add one tablespoon of sugar and muddle the lime pieces by pressing and pounding with a wooden spoon (an oar handle also works in times of serious need!). Fill each glass with ice and pour in Wight Vodka.
The New World Champion Speaks Spanish

After 12 very competitive regattas and after five exciting days, the new Platu 25 World Champion is "Vilagarcia", the Spanish team from Galizia with Anton Paz at the helm. Every body expected a play off between the Spanish teams "Vilagarcia" and "Tuypan Caixanova Men" of Marcos Perez e Roy Alonso that yesterday was second in the Gold list with the same score of "Volagarcia"". But "Tuypan" slip to the 5th place and there were some surprises in the final ranking list.
Third place is for an other Spanish: "Bribon-Movistar" of Jose Cusì who, for the second consecutive year, took a place on the World Championship podium. From the 4th to the 7th place, the dominion is completely Spanish with "La Revoltosa" of Jaime Pont (4th position), "Tuypan Caixanova Men" (5th position),"Central Lechera Asturiana" (6th position) and "Iberdrola" (7th position). The German team of "Flexi" of Manfred Bogdahn concluded 8th.
First of the Italians (in 9th position in the Gold list) is the Platu 25 Italian Champion "Nanuk" of Gianrocco Catalano with Luigi Ravioli at the helm.
It was a pity for the 14th place of "Brera Hotels" of Emanuele Vitrano and Alberto Wolleb with Sandro Montefusco at the helm. "Brera Hotels" could be on the podium but the Italian team paid three disqualifications in the regattas 2,3 and 4 because of irregularities in the weight certificate. The boat had to compete with extra weight, losing many positions. Yesterday it could go the Gold list up (6-11-3 yesterday in the regattas) but no hope for "Brera Hotels" to arrive to the podium.
Today is the last day of a fantastic World Championship, with 92 boats coming from 14 different Countries of three Continents. "We expect that for the next Platu 25 World Championship there will be 150 boats" said Edoardo Barni, the President of the Italian Platu 25 Class.

Bill Bentsen Awarded ISAF Beppe Croce Trophy
The International Sailing Federation (ISAF) announced today that in 2009 the ISAF Beppe Croce Trophy - which honours an outstanding voluntary contribution to the sport of sailing - has been awarded to rules expert Bill Bentsen (USA).
ISAF President Goran Petersson will present the award on Thursday 12 November at the 2009 ISAF Annual Conference in Busan, Korea.
Bentsen's record of service to the International Sailing Federation includes membership on its Racing Rules Committee for 25 years until 2004, at which time he was Vice-Chairman of the committee. He chaired the Racing Rules Committee's first Race Management Sub-committee, which introduced the new Sailing Instructions Guide, now Appendix L of The Racing Rules of Sailing, and worked with Goran Petersson and Bryan Willis to draft the first ISAF Call Book for Match Racing (1992).
As a member of the Racing Rules Committee Working Party when chaired by Mary Pera, Bentsen spearheaded the major simplification and general revision of the Racing Rules that became The Racing Rules of Sailing for 1997-2001. Later he became chairman of the Working Party. Most recently, he was a member of the Racing Rules Committee's Case Book Working Party. In 2004, he received an ISAF Long Service Gold Medal.
As an ISAF International Judge, Bentsen has been a member of international juries for the world or continental championships of many international classes, two ISAF Youth World Championships, the 1979 Pan American Games Regatta, and the 1988 Olympic Regatta.
World Cruising Club Announces 2010 Events
World Cruising Club, the cruising rally specialists best known for the popular transatlantic sailing event the Atlantic Rally for Cruisers (ARC), has now opened its entry lists for a host of 2010 events including ARC Europe, Rally Portugal and the ARC.
In a significant new development for 2010 and resulting from a successful trial with this year's Rally Portugal, from June 2010 yachts in all World Cruising Club offshore rallies will carry satellite tracking units, capable of automatically reporting the yachts' positions, anywhere in the world.
ARC Europe 2010 - Start date 06/05/2010
Crossing the Atlantic from West to East at the end of the Caribbean season. ARC Europe starts from both Tortola (BVI) and from Florida, calling at Bermuda and then cruising the Azores, before finishing in Portugal and northern Europe.
Rally Portugal 2010 - Start date 30/05/2010
This popular cruising rally that crosses the Bay of Biscay from Plymouth and then ventures down the Portuguese Coast to Marina de Lagos, has just celebrated its 15th anniversary.
ARC 2010 - Start date 21/11/2010
The world's most popular transocean cruising event celebrates its silver jubilee next year. The ARC, which was first established in 1986, covers 2700 nautical miles from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria to Saint Lucia in the Caribbean.
Yellowbrick - Satellite Tracking
This compact and powerful technology developed by Yellowbrick Adventure Tracking, will provide a significant benefit for participants in World Cruising Club events. The system was first used on Rally Portugal 2009 and was a huge success with automatic position reports uploading to the WCC website every six hours via the Iridium Network. Tracking will also be used on the 2009 ARC in the racing division and will be introduced to all World Cruising events starting with Rally Portugal 2010.
Kim Lythgoe
Kim Lythgoe [ESP] has drowned in a tragic diving accident whilst taking a well earned holiday in the Maldives.
The first thing I remember about Kim is his wonderful smile. It just quietly sat there lighting up his face and our lives with his quiet confidence. He never seemed to be in a hurry. He just went about his business without getting excited. A measure of his ability was to keep the top two Olympic Windsurfing women's athletes in the same team whilst maintaining harmony and team spirit. It takes someone very special to achieve that and keep them focused and at the top of their game all season.
To have two such rivals as Marina Alabau [ESP] and Blanca Manchon [ESP] trading punches on the water in high pressure RS:X Olympic Class Windsurfing Championships is one thing but to have them in the same team happily working together, training together, travelling together and friends together takes a very special person as coach. Kim was that person.
For Kim's familly, for all his friends, for Marina, for Blanca, for the Spanish Windsurfing Dream Team, for Royal Spanish Sailing Federation, for the world of windsurfing, for the world in general a bright and constant light has been snuffed out in a tragic diving accident in the Maldives.
However, It reminds us again. Live for to today for tomorrow we may not be here. Do not let petty rivalries separate us. Windsurfing has lost a great servant and supporter. Honour Kim's memory by putting your personal ambitions aside when ashore, be friends for the greater good of everyone involved. -- Rory Ramsden

I understand Keith Barkers Letter, but I feel there is a chance that Jessica might not be around to have the chance to have a family like Keith did.
I have been chatting to several fellow skippers in the last few days, & we are all in amazement at the lack of interest that Jessica's parents seem to have over their daughters apparent lack of preparation, safety & it seems even a lack of basic navigational skills. Seems the lure of Fame & fortune is shining brighter than common sense.
The Australian do-gooders happen to be The Maritime Safety Queensland inspectors and they found that she could not produce "course plots on paper charts, or waypoints on the plotter" and she kept a log with "irregular latitude and longitude entries" Read the many interesting comments here: www.news.com.au
I am totally for letting young people have a go at whatever they want on the water, having taught young people all my life, after being allowed that opportunity when I was a young lad. But this latest trend for setting the record for youngest sailor to sail round the world, with or without stops, Panama or not, has only one possible outcome & that's a child being lost at sea. The the rescue authorities will jump into action as they always do, no doubt putting the lives of others at risk, followed by the usual witch hunt on just who let this happen.
When Mike Perham first crossed an ocean solo, his father shadowed him all the way, which I thought was a good safety policy. It offered a good balance of responsible parenting vs adventure, allowing Mike to sail his own boat, yet having instant & personal backup close to hand.
As a child still, Jessica is not allowed to drive a car, vote, drink alcohol, and the RYA won't let her take her Yachtmaster exam until she is 18.
So, its her parents who are responsible ......... or not it seems!
