"We met a lot of boats all through the night. I kept watching out for cargo ships. Our AIS system (real time location of boats) works very well. The alarm goes off, which allows you to change the boat's course in the event of there being a risk of collision. The problem is that we cannot detect boats that are not equipped with the system. I was sailing at between 15 and 18 knots. After having checked that there was nobody for miles around, I went to lie down for a few minutes and even if I had been up, it was a time at which you look at the weather on the computer. I wouldn't have seen the trawler. Five minutes is enough. There no was call to the VHF. I think that the fishermen were not watching. I woke with a jump with the impact. I leaped onto the deck and did what was necessary to prevent the mast falling. The boat is seriously damaged. She has no bowsprit any more, there's a hole at the front of the hull, but the boat has been made safe. All the energy spent for years preparing all this, it's terrible.'' Faced with the extent of the damage, the skipper quickly knew that the race ended here for him: 'To repair such damage, you need to be in port, dry-docked and have time ahead of you. To go back up to Les Sables d'Olonne with Groupe Bel in this state would be impossible and the Vendee Globe rules are very clear. Stopping in another port means retiring." Four years ago, the violent weather in the Bay of Biscay had already got the better of Kito's Vendee Globe, and returned to Les Sables d'Olonne with a dismasted Groupe Bel. The monohull reached Cascais at 20:00 (Paris time - UT+1). Kito then will work with his technical team to establish a plan of action for the next few days. The IRC 52s US Super Series begins with a Key West prelude to their March World Championship in Miami. Doug DeVos's Quantum Racing (Ada, MI) will defend his 2012 Key West title against custom thoroughbreds from as far away as Argentina, the UK and the West Coast. Featured one design competition will again center on Melges mania with the Melges 24 and 32 classes producing some of the world's very top sailors. World and European ranking Champion Riccardo Simoneschi (Milano, Italy) challenges a Melges 24 fleet that has many other ranked sailors including last year's Key West Champion Bora Gulari (Detroit, MI) and Bruce Ayres (Costa Mesa, CA). The Melges 32 fleet already has its full international hallmark, with entries from Italy, Japan, Switzerland and Russia. Newly crowned World Champion - Californian John Kilroy and the Samba Pa Ti crew won class honors at Quantum Key West 2012 and will be returning to defend in 2013. While the Grand Prix boats and international champions may draw the headlines, the heart and soul of race week is the one design and handicap classes that are present year after year. One designs such as the J/80s, and the many PHRF competitors come for the racing, camaraderie, and dependable south Florida sunshine and wind. The J/70s are making their Key West debut with over 25 of these popular new sport boats helmed by Key West newcomers and veterans alike. January 2012 saw the latest High Performance designs make a debut in a subclass. This time around they will have their own class start with more new boats on the line. Canobie was first launched in Hobart on 1 November 1912. An article was published in The Mercury on that day, to celebrate the event. Her original design came from the American stable of William Hand Jr, published in the "Rudder" in February 1900. The design was modified by Alf Blore in 1906 to suit the Derwent conditions, and adopted by the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania. There were six such boats built at Battery Point, Hobart between 1910 and 1912. Canobie was the last of the six, built by Chas Lucas. A seventh boat, Pilgrim, was built to the same design in Launceston, Tasmania. At that time there was a push to develop a One Design class of racing yacht, having a heavy keel and a 21 feet waterline length. The Hobart boats never received a formal class name as World War 1 intervened, and then other designs arose in Sydney which rendered the boats uncompetitive. To this day these boats are still referred to simply as the Tasmanian One Design boats. All seven of the One Design boats are still in existence, scattered across Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania and Western Australia. Five of the boats are still on the water. Canobie was raced competitively in Hobart by her six previous owners. Her rig was changed from Gaff to Bermudan rig in the 1920's, and then back to Gaff in 2006. Canobie was fully restored to her original configuration in Mike Foster's South Fremantle workshop in 2009/2010. Mike was able to source many of the specialty timbers for the work, including celery top pine, Victorian ash, silky oak, myrtle and Tasmanian oak. The Maritime Museum of Tasmania was particularly helpful in providing historic photos, drawings and a boat building manual from that period of Canobie's beginnings. Igor Bjorksten re-built the entire Oregan spars, myrtle blocks, fittings and rigging, and used imported synthetic rope from Italy to achieve the original hemp rope appearance. With the help of a number of other superb WA craftsmen Canobie was re-launched in May 2010. ISAF President Development Award Presented to Rob Andrews
The Award recognizes outstanding achievement in the development of sailing. Rob Andrews already had a long and illustrious career in sailing when he was appointed to the role of Sailing Manager for London 2012. Through his tireless work in this role he has contributed enormously to a significant lasting legacy for sailing. In the Spring of 2008 Rob's London 2012 journey began when he was appointed to the role of Sailing Manager by LOCOG. He attended the 2008 Olympic and Paralympic Games as an observer, absorbing the highs and lows of both events and in the autumn of 2008, began working closely with ISAF with one goal in mind, to make the London 2012 Olympic Sailing Competition the best it could possibly be. Through hard work and a vision the dream became a reality and on 29 July British and international sailing fans flocked in their thousands to Weymouth and Portland. It was a job well done by Rob and a committed team of individuals working together for the good of the sport of sailing. The transfer of knowledge is well underway as ISAF work hard to continue the developments and breakthroughs that Rob has made through to the Rio 2016 Olympic Sailing Competition and beyond. AFR Midnight Rambler, owned by Ed Psaltis, Bob Thomas and Michael Bencsik, today power-sailed to victory in the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron's historic Morna Cup, a short passage race from Watsons Bay to Long Reef and return. The Ker 40 won the Morna Cup on PHS handicaps and also took out IRC honours, which is also part of the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia's Greg Thornton Short Ocean Pointscore. Sailed in a fresh 18-22 knot sou'-easter and a lumpy sea, AFR Midnight Rambler finished less than seven minutes astern of line honours winner Quest, Bob Steels' TP52, and the former New Zealand yacht Upshot, an Elliott 52 skippered by Wayne Keavy. AFR Midnight Rambler won the Morna Cup, decided on PHS handicaps, from Ceilah (Peter Williams and Cruz Control (David Cutcliffe). Under IRC scoring, AFR Midnight Rambler won from Victoire (Darryl Hodgkinson) and Quest. CYCA results for the Greg Thornton SOPS were identical under IRC scoring but under PHS scoring, AFR Midnight Rambler won Division 1 from Cruz Control and Blackadder (Stephen Thomas) while Division 2 went to Limelight (Alan Husband) from Selkie (Chris Antico) and Alpha Carinae (Damien Baxter) The IRC win has strengthened AFR Midnight Rambler lead in the Greg Thornton SOPS pointscore after five races so far this season. The Ker 40 has so far placed 2-2-2-8-1 for 15 points while equal second on 29 points are Merlin (5-3-5-3-4) and Quest (1-1-3-12-3).
