As top qualifier out of the round robin matches, Minoprio should have gotten first choice of his opponent in the Quarter Finals. However, he left the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club before the draw was scheduled to be conducted. His choice went to the next ranking skipper, Taylor Canfield (ISV), Team Chicago Match Race Center. Taking the first pick of opponents, Canfield sailing in his third Gold Cup selected David Chapman (AUS) a newcomer to Bermuda as his Quarter Final opponent. Chapman was the surprise performer of the top eight. He was ranked 91 by ISAF and seeded ninth in Group 1. Chapman was the only Quarter Final qualifier who was not among the top eight seeds going into the Gold Cup regatta. Staffan Lindberg (FIN) Alandia Sailing Team got the next choice for his Quarter Final opponent and picked Eric Monnin, Oklays Corum Sailing Team. Johnie Berntsson (SWE) Berntsson Sailing Team next picked to sail against his Swedish nemesis Bjorn Hansen (SWE) Mekonomen Sailing. That left Ian Williams Team GAC Pindar un-chosen, so he matches up with Minoprio by default. This pits the top scoring team from the qualifier round robin stage against the number one match race sailor in the world as ranked by both ISAF and by Alpari World Match Racing Tour points. The Quarter Finals, semi-finals and finals, are live online and are live scheduled for 14:00 local time (ADT/GMT-3) Saturday and Sunday will be televised live and online. With 15-18 knot winds gusting to 20 on the Great Sound - day one of the Renaissance Re Junior Gold Cup offered optimal conditions for the heavier, older sailors who excelled here during four races. Peter Burling of Team Korea, at 21 the youngest skipper in the fleet, and China Team's Phil Robertson, at 25 the second youngest, both scored their first victories in a dense wind around 20 knots. The wind blowing against an ebb tide produced a short, sharp chop on San Francisco Bay and tested the skills of the sailors. Burling took over the helm of Team Korea two weeks ago, yet showed the calm of a veteran in leading his crew to a nail-biting 2-second victory over Luna Rossa Piranha (Chris Draper). Burling's crew struggled to control their gennaker in the rough conditions, but were aided by a penalty on the Italian team, who almost capsized after sailing out of bounds. The challenges on the racecourse were noted as some crews came to complete stops during maneuvers. The AC45 wingsail catamarans are quick in straight lines, but lose a lot of momentum in downspeed moments. Robertson suffered the cruelest fate on the day. They lost their first race of the day but followed it up with a 6-second victory over Luna Rossa Piranha in the second race. Robertson and crew then sustained damage to the frames in their wingsail while jibing and were forced to miss their third race and a chance to advance to the quarterfinal round. While China Team was eliminated from the match racing championship, Team Korea advanced to the quarterfinal round where it will meet Artemis Racing - White (Terry Hutchinson). Other crews to advance include Artemis Racing - Red (Nathan Outteridge), Emirates Team New Zealand (Dean Barker), Energy Team (Loick Peyron) and J.P. Morgan BAR (Ben Ainslie). The quarterfinal round is scheduled for Thursday and Friday. The first two quarterfinal matches are scheduled for Friday just after noontime. A break in the racing will ensue before all 11 boats in the fleet return to the water for the first two of seven scheduled fleet races at 5:10 pm PDT. RRP: Rio De Janeiro Iconic Finale for 2012 Extreme Sailing Series Racing will take place over four days from the 6th-9th December - the first of which will be open water racing in front of the world-famous Copacabana beach, before three days of stadium racing off Flamengo Beach. Rio is no stranger to hosting global sailing events having hosted three Volvo Ocean Race stopovers. Brazil's rich sporting heritage is continuing to go from strength to strength - not only will they be proud hosts to the 2016 Summer Olympics, the city's Maracana Stadium will also host the final match for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, and now, in a four-year deal, the Extreme Sailing Series will become part of that sporting legacy. The Gstaad Yacht Club Centenary Trophy Goes To Marigold
One could not have asked for more today for the second edition of the Centenary Trophy, organized and awarded by the Gstaad Yacht Club in co-operation with the Societe Nautique de Saint-Tropez. A bright sun, blue skies just streaked with clouds, a good breeze, hundreds of spectators' boats and a huge public watching the show from the old port walls. Sure, the spectacle of the one century and more old boats was the focal point of today's racing at the Voiles the Saint-Tropez, hosting event of the Centenary trophy regatta. Thanks to a good south-westerly of ten/twelve knots the Race Committee opted for course 2, that is a 10,7 miles long coastal triangle with a start and a finish just metres away from the harbour ramparts. In a close and thrilling finish, gusts sweeping the line, under the eyes of hundreds of spectators Marigold crossed in first, ahead of Bonafide and Oriole. In the exciting "race inside the race" where four 15M I.R. Tuiga (1909), The Lady Anne (1912), Spanish flagged Hispania (1909) and Mariska (1908) it was close racing at its best and on the finish line it was The Lady Anne to get over the line in first, celebrating in grand style her one hundredth anniversary followed by Hispania and Mariska, while Monaco's Tuiga had to retire sometime before the finish due to a technical hitch. Solent IRC Series In the first race the start was all important as in all the classes the boats that got away first led around the course to the finish with very few changes of place within the fleet. Class 1 and 2 were lead by Kurketrekker (First 35) finishing a clear 15 minutes ahead of Sunshine (Ker 9m), (Class1) with Aztec( Archambauld A35) and Morpheus (Dehler 36) astern. Classes 3 had a much closer race with Black Diamond (Figaro) winning from Bojangles (J92)with Just Enough (J92) third. Class 4 was won by Crakajax (X95) closely followed by Crazy Horse (Mustang 30). The second race was a more interesting affair. The course was using 3 marks along the Haslar wall in about 6 kts of wind starting at the middle mark and heading up towards Gillkicker Point where there appeared to be a little more breeze off shore which the first few boats headed for. Interestingly Sunshine headed inshore to show that the back eddy around the point had a bigger influence and the following boats followed her lead to overhaul the leaders as theydesperately attempted to get back across to the shore, Kurketrekker and Aztec finished behind Sunshine. Black Diamond won, ahead of Tinker T (Elan 333) and Jusr Enough in Class 3. In Class 4 Crakajax took the gun from Crazy Horse and Magic (Impala 28). Being vigilant the race officer and his team finished the race early with the wind dying away completely just in time for all the boats to finish. -- David Parr European and UK 18Ft Skiff Grand Prix & UK National Championships With a decimated fleet and only five starters the battle was still on between Pica and Magic Marine to conclude the regatta in these awesome conditions. Despite the late charge and with four points adrift, Pica was running out of time to take the regatta from Magic Marine. It was Original Chia and again Pica who controlled from the Committee boat end, Pica 1st at the windward and kept control of the race with close tacks upwind with Magic who eventually capsized allowing the black dog. But with Original Chia and TC-English Braid throwing in the towel Eike Dietrich, Finn Mrugalla and Jan Peckolt's job was done as Team Magic Marine won the last event in the European Tour. Stewart Mears, Tristan Hutt and Jamie Mears of team Pica came a close second, and had to be satisfied with winning the UK National Championships and UK Grand Prix. Jack Bouttell, Adam Minter, Jarrod Simpson on Black Dog came a very respectable 3rd in the Event. Sam Caslin, Mike Banks and Jack Grogan of Hyde Sails in 5th had done enough to win the European Grand Prix overall all. Best newcomer of the UK 18ft skiff season was awarded to Dave Jobson who teamed up with Neil Harrison and James Hemmingway to pull off a great performance with one of the oldest boats and pin head rig. Furthest travelled for the event was awarded to the Eurolink team (Tom Eggersdorfer, Latzi Meissner, Friedl Renner) from Munich. The final weekend in the UK Skiff calendar not only had enjoyed the biggest turnout and conditions for 18ft skiff racing on British water in recent years but also involved some of the closest racing throughout the fleet. This intensive season of 18 sailing has been fantastic preparation for four UK teams making pilgrimage to Sydney for the JJ Giltinan. -- Ben Clothier Industry News The YDSA Certifying Authority is appointed by the MCA, and issues certificates under the codes. The new authorisation will enable the Authority to undertake coding inspections and certification for vessels under 24 metres (load line length) for commercial use on behalf of the Jersey Register. ----------------------------------------------- Future Fibres has announced the arrival of leading specialist, Torbjorn Linderson, as the company's new multihull product manager. Linderson has spent the last 15 years consulting in the field of performance multihulls and his arrival has already begun to pay dividends - helping Future Fibres win its first complete multihull mast and rigging package for the Nigel Irens designed A65 catamaran. Torbjorn started his first consultancy in 1987, whilst still attending university. A decade later his passion for sailing provided him with a consultancy for Selden Masts, where he focused on multihull rig and sailplan design, as well as conceptual advice regarding deck gear and sail handling issues. Between 1999 and 2011 Linderson worked extensively for Marstrom Composite AB, offering a mix of sales, project management, design and marketing capabilities. In 2010 Linderson became a part of the Nigel Irens design team for select projects. ----------------------------------------------- Pains Wessex, has appointed a new UK distributor. Pains Wessex products are manufactured by UK-based Drew Marine Signal and Safety. ----------------------------------------------- Registrations have already topped 200 apprentices and young people in training for the Shipwrights Annual Lecture taking place at the Turner Simms Hall on Wednesday 17th October 2012 at 2.00pm. The event will showcase an impressive line-up of speakers from some of the industry's best known employers. Attendance is free for apprentices, shipwrights and young people in training who are studying in the marine sector. Employers and lecturers are encouraged to support their students by also attending. ----------------------------------------------- November's Irish cruiser Racer Conference (ICRA) in Kilkenny on November 17th will feature reports from the Olympic Games from Dun Laoghaire race officer Jack Roy who officiated in Weymouth, ICRA will also propose a new youth Sailing academy and Ian Travers will report on the rise and rise of the Quarter ton fleet. The packed one day conference is an opportunity for all cruiser racing sailors to exchange views and engage on all issues that are important to sector. All cruiser sailors are automatically members of ICRA and are very welcome. The conference will also see the presentation of ICRA's boat of the year award. Nominations are invited. A discussion on the issue of discards at the 2013 ICRA National Championships at Tralee Bay Sailing Club at Fenit will also take place. There will be an update of developments on Brewin Dolphin Commodores Cup and Ireland's efforts to field a team for the next event in 2014. There will be an update on the new system of nomination for places at ISA all Ireland sailing Championships and how it impacts on ICRA National Championship Winners. The ICOYC itinerary commenced with a two-week cruise in company along the South Coast, followed by a dinner at the House of Lords for delegates and their partners, hosted by Royal Southern member the Rt. Hon. Lord Wakeham. All the delegates then gathered at the Royal Southern's riverside Clubhouse in Hamble to attend the three-day Forum while a full partners programme got under way. A tightly run schedule of moderated sessions covered wide-ranging and challenging topics interspersed with presentations from guest speakers Jack Edwards, Chairman of Trustees for the Mansura Trophy competition for development of hybrid powered vessels Mike Pope, CEO of Forum sponsors GJW Direct, David Fuller, CEO of Pilote Media, David Tydeman, CEO of Oyster Yachts and Jerome Pels, Secretary General of ISAF. Session-related case studies were also presented by individual yacht club representatives after which, delegates were invited to put their questions to the panel of speakers. The Forum's 2012 agenda included presentations focusing on membership development and using club assets and activities to bring new participants into the sport, the inexorable rise of hybrid technology in the marine world and the ways to run accountable 'green' regattas and events.
