The 25 boat gold fleet sailed two races in 16-23 knots which increased to 20-25 for the silver fleet's two races amidst tropical showers. The medal race sailors anticipated the heavy breeze, but unexpectedly the wind dropped to a manageable 10 knots.
On the 29er course, French sailors Kevin Fisher and Glenn Gouron consolidated and won the Worlds by 28 points. Pepe Bettini and Fernando Gwozdz, the perpetual bridesmaid, sailed to 2nd overall with a 10-3-2 final day. Danish sailors Oscar Haumann and Taus Holtug who lead the majority of the event, tied for 3rd with Lorezo Franceschini and Riccardo Camin of Italy, losing and having to settle for 4th overall. However, Haumann and Holtug won the Highest Placing Youth Team award. Top placing women's team was Ida Marie Baad Nielsen and Marie Thusgaard Olsen of Denmark who also won this trophy in 2009. -- Jerelyn Biehl

Massey Wins Back To Back I14 Crowns
Massey is the first sailor to win the i14 world title back to back.
Massey and Wilsdon had outstanding teamwork but it was their speed downwind that seemed to stand out.
"We foil hard and point the bow lower than most," he said. "14s pay off if you sail them dead flat."
He also felt the modified bow of his Bieker 5 hull gave him an advantage. The modification has resulted in a straighter and lower bow in the final metre of his boat.
Massey said he had his boat George 1st up for sale for the "right price" but considered the modified Bieker 5 was a 'special boat". No matter what happens with the boat, Massey is certain to sail the next i14 worlds at Weymouth in Great Britain.
While Massey and Wilsdon are World Champions in the International 14 class, the racing continues tomorrow (Monday 11 Jan) for the rest of the 109-boat fleet that has been split into Gold and Silver fleets. The split was a necessary safety measure in order to fit the large fleet into the confines of Sydney Harbour during a busy summer.

SNG informs GGYC that ISAF Jury appointed on 4 Dec 2009 is operational
* SNG has published a draft version of the Sailing Instructions for the 33rd America's Cup Deed of Gift Match due to start on the 8 February. This draft document has been sent to the challenger and may be discussed at the meeting between the two teams in the presence of the ISAF AC Jury Chairman, David Tillett, in Singapore on 12 January.
SNG also published a draft of the amended 33rd America's Cup Notice of Race incorporating the New York Supreme Court's recent decisions and following discussions with GGYC/BMW Oracle Racing representatives in Sydney on 15 December 2009.

Golden Gate Yacht Club is hopeful that the remaining issues will be solved satisfactorily in talks with SNG to be held next Tuesday in Singapore.
These talks will be in the presence of the Chairman of the International Jury, David Tillett and, International Sailing Federation representative, David Kellett.
GGYC does not expect to make any further comment until after the Singapore meeting."
Issues still believed to be on the table is the requirement inserted into the Notice of Race by SNG for BOR90/USA to moor in the outer Darcena, which BMW Oracle Racing are believed to be disputing on grounds of bring too restrictive for their wingsailed challenger.
There may be issues raised when BOR90/USA is presented for measurement (although the Notice of Race has been modified to correctly state that the measurements 'shall not exceed..'
The vexed issue of Constructed in Country, particularly over the used of sails by the Defender which BMW Oracle Racing claim are made in USA (Alinghi have stated they are made in Switzerland) is expected to be tested before the regatta starts - possibly by another direct approach to the New York Supreme Court rather than via the International Jury. -- Richard Gladwell in Sail-World.com, www.sail-world.com
Star World Championship In Rio
As expected, Brazil will have the greatest number of participants, with 24 boats entered to compete, including top teams such as Torben Grael/Marcelo Ferreira, Robert Scheidt/Bruno Prada, Lars Grael/Ronald Seifert and Alan Adler/Guilherme de Almeida.
The second largest team registered in the race is Italy, with 12 boats, followed by Argentina, with 8 teams, and the USA and Germany, each with 6 boats.
The World Championship will be technically very strong with participants such as British sailors Iain Percy/Andrew Simpson, the Olympic champions in Beijing; US duo George Szabo/Rick Peters, 2009 world champions in Sweden; Swiss participants Flávio Marazzi/Enrico de Maria, currently the top ranked sailors in the world; and world champions Xavier Rohart/Pierre Ponsot (France) and Fredrik Loof/Johan Tillander (Sweden).
The following countries will be represented in the tournament: Brazil (24), Italy (12), Argentina (8), Germany (6), USA (6), Portugal (3), Switzerland (3), England (3), Canada (2), Chile (2), Sweden (2), Croatia (2), Georgia (1), Spain (1), Serbia (1), France (1), Norway (1), Greece (1), Ireland (1) and Austria (1).
In previous years, the only classes eligible to win the main Bloody Mary Pursuit Race Trophy have been those with an RYA published Portsmouth Yardstick Number. As of the 2010 Bloody Mary, all monohull dinghies, including foilers, and those keelboat classes accepted by Queen Mary Sailing Club were eligible to win the Bloody Mary Trophy.
The full range of dinghies entered from a Topper to an RS600 FF. The lead was progressively taken from the Topper by a Miracle, a Laser and a Merlin. With 20 minutes to go a 505 sailed by Andy Smithy and Tim Needham took the lead and retained it until the end despite an RS800 snapping at their heels. Andy and Tim from Staunton Harold Sailing Club who had only just purchased the boat were the successful winners of this first ever fully open Bloody Mary.
Winner of the Ladies Helm was Sarah Allen from Royal Southern helming an RS200 with Mark Ampleford , the Hyde Sails Foilers Trophy was Geoff Carveth in an International Moth. The first Queen Mary Helm was James Boyce sailing with Sam Tozer in an RS200. Class prizes were won by Jim Downer and John Price (RS400) of Royal Victoria and Andrew Hurst (Laser) from Queen Mary.
Prize winners walked away with a bag of goodies including vodka and tomato juice, tickets for the London Boat Show, fabulous watches from Nautica and free subscriptions to sailjuice.com.

Royal Racing Yacht Bloodhound Sold
Built in 1936 by the famous Camper & Nicholsons yard in Gosport, Bloodhound was one of the most successful ocean racing yachts ever built, winning scores of races in the south of England and also crossed the Atlantic to compete in Bermuda.
In 1969 Bloodhound was sold and not replaced by the Royal Family. Bloodhound then effectively retired from racing until the 1980s when she once again competed until 2001. Thereafter she fell into considerable disrepair and very nearly became beyond salvage. However in 2003 she was purchased by Tony McGrail, a yacht surveyor and classic yacht restorer. Over the next 3 years she then underwent a major internal and external refit to bring her back to her pristine original condition.
Having been purchased by The Royal Yacht Britannia Trust, Bloodhound will form the centrepiece of a major new exhibit at this 5 Star visitor attraction, which in terms of quality is officially Scotland's best visitor attraction. It is anticipated that Bloodhound will be on display in April 2010. -- Richard Durham
National Australia Bank - Top Dog Trophy Series
55 competitors lined up to contest one of the Club's oldest trophies, first awarded in 1880 to yacht 'Naomi' in the guise of the Sugar Refiner's Cup. With a consistent Easterly breeze and a flooding tide at Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club's Kellett Island Clubhouse, experienced RO Gareth Williams opted for a Club start and course 2 - the longest option available.
Having set off on the first start of the afternoon, Pandora 'Panache' managed to hold on to the lead for four legs, before being overhauled by Jamie McWilliam's quarter tonner, 'Sai Kung Belle', with the Flying Fifteens hot on his transom.
McWilliam managed to hold on to the lead, with the Etchells and Cruisers gaining, until the final leg of the race when a one-on-one with Jimmy Farquhar's Etchells, 3x11, allowed Laurence Mead's Etchells, Capoeira, in the side door to take the gun.
YJA Pantaenius Young Sailor Of The Year Award
Phil and Ben were voted RYA Southern Regional Young Sailors of the Year 2009 last autumn. They won Gold in their 420 on the final day of the 2009 Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championships in Brazil. They also won first place in the Kiel Week regatta and third place in the 420 Class Worlds at Lake Garda.
Phil and Ben were amongst thirteen RYA Regional Young Sailor of the Year winners who are voted for by RYA affiliated sailing clubs. These young sailors have made a significant impact on youth sailing, ranging from gold medal winning achievements and overcoming adversity, to the huge amount of hard work and effort they give back to their clubs.
The 2009 YJA Pantaenius Yachtsman of the Year will be announced on Tuesday 12th January, at an awards ceremony to be held at Trinity House, London. Finalists for this prestigious title are Paul Goodison, World Laser champion, Olympic Gold medal and five times European champion. Paul is the only sailor worldwide to hold all three awards at the same time and was nominated for the ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year Award. Sam Davies, first placed Briton in the Vendee Globe 2008/09. Sam competed in the Transat Jacque Vabre race which finished last 2009 and was also nominated for the ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year Award. Finally, Ian Williams. Two times World Match Race champion. Ian became the first British National to be crowned Match Racing World champion in the event's 19 year history.
The award will be presented by Sir Robin Knox-Johnston a previous winner himself.
174th Australia Day Regatta
First introduced to celebrate the arrival of the First Fleet, the historic regatta will see yachts of widely varying age and design race on Sydney Harbour while many of the best ocean races will compete in a traditional race from Port Jackson to Botany Bay and return. They will be sailing the course that brought Captain Arthur Phillip north to the magnificent harbour around which now stands the great city of Sydney.
The Sydney Harbour fleet will, as always, have a touch of nostalgia with divisions for gaff-rigged wooden yachts, classic yachts and historical skiffs lovingly restored by their current 'custodians' as the proud owners like to call themselves. In contrast, the ocean racing fleet will include many yachts built of exotic materials such as carbon fibre.
The notice of race and entry form for the 174th Australia Day Regatta on the Harbour can be downloaded from the Regatta website or from the websites of the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron or the Sydney Amateur Sailing Club. Entries close with the RSYS Sailing Office (Harbour events) or the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia Sailing Office (Ocean race) on Monday, 18 January.
The Australia Day short ocean race will start at 11am on 26 January 2010, with the 174th Harbour regatta gets under way from 1.30pm. Starting at 11.30am will be the colourful Ferrython while other events during the afternoon will include the Tall Ships Race and spectacular flyovers by RAAF F/A Hornets and Hawk 127 aircraft and a parachute jump by the Army's Red Beret regiment members, landing in Circular Quay. -- Peter Campbell
