The Race Committee presented a course of approximately 24-nautical miles for the Maxi and Classic divisions which sent the fleet towards Monaci before a downwind leg to the Secca di Tre Monti, through Capo Ferro and round Mortoriotto ahead of the return to the finish off Porto Cervo. The Maxi class enjoyed a particularly busy day, tackling a windward/leeward course prior to the coastal race. The Grand Prix class completed a windward/leeward race while two windward/leeward races were held in the Rolex Swan 45 World Championship. Today's winners were: Berenice Bis (ITA) in Maxi with a first and a second place; Magical Mystery Tour (GBR) in Grand Prix; Ondine (ITA) in Classic while TalJ (ITA) was the best performer in the Rolex Swan 45 World Championship, claiming a first and a second place. The overall competition leaders are: Bronenosec (RUS) in Maxi; Magical Mystery Tour in Grand Prix; Ondine in Classic and TalJ in the Rolex Swan 45 World Championship. The Swan 42 Magical Mystery Tour has made an impressive start to the Grand Prix class, top performer today following yesterday's runners-up finish in the coastal race. She shares the overall lead with Natalia (ROU) who today notched a second place ahead of Amanda Hartley's Swan 56 Clem. Marco Gerbaudo's Swan 53 Ondine continues to dominate the Classic division, claiming a second straight victory to lead the competition by four points ahead of the Sparkman & Stephens 43 Magia II (ITA). Defending champion Earlybird (GER) has lost ground in the Rolex Swan 45 World Championship dropping into third position as Vittorio Ruggiero's TalJ took a first and second place. TalJ now enjoys a significant five-point lead over Stefano Piccolo's Swanted (ITA). Earlybird lies in third spot. The Rolex Swan Cup, organized by Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (YCCS), continues tomorrow with the long island race scheduled for all classes. Dmitry Samokhin Takes The Lead
Once again the fleet was too eager on the first attempt to start and PRO Alan Crosbie and his team from Kinsale Yacht Club had to recall them. He brought out the Z-flag for the second attempt, which carries a 20% penalty for any boat over the line within the final minute, and this persuaded the teams to start cleanly. With winds from the west and ranging from 10-13 knots on the first beat right up to 18-20 knots on the final leg, lots of tricky shifts plus a considerable difference in the sea state across the course as the wind built there were dozens of variables for the crews to keep track of and lots of place changes on every leg. In the overall rankings Dmitry Samokhin's second place today takes him into a six-point lead with 23 points. Lawrie Smith, whose needs crutches to get around ashore thanks to the knee injury he sustained on day one but fortunately is still able to cope in the boat, now lies in second place with 29 points. Another features of the Dragon Gold Cup is the Nations Cup competition, a team competition open to any nation fielding three or more competitors. Each national team is decided following the first day of racing with their top three finishers of that day being eligible. Great Britain, represented by Lawrie Smith, Poul-Richard Hoj-Jensen and Chris Hunt, now lead the Nations Cup with 145 points. In second place is the Russian team comprising Dmitry Samokhin, Anatoly Loginov and Alexander Ezhkov, on 149 points. The German team of Tommy Mueller, Stephan Link and Philip Dohse is third on 191 points, and Ireland, represented by Martin Byrne, Cameron Good and Gary Treacy, are in fourth with 262 points. The weather forecast is for strong winds again tomorrow so we can expect another exciting day off the Old Head of Kinsale. Spindrift Racing Beat the Dawn Patrol in Cascais After finishing a close second in last week's finish to Leg 1 into Dun Laoghaire when they arrived from Kiel, Germany and also winning the City Race series on Dublin Bay, their Leg 2 victory ensures that Spindrift racing seize the overall lead of the MOD70 European Tour, by one single point over FONCIA. It proved another close finish in painfully light zephyrs, just as the sun was rising over Cascais. All four top finishers crossed the finish line within one hour. FONCIA, second, Musandam-Oman Sail, third, and Groupe Edmond de Rothshchild, fourth were each separated by 400 metres as they glided gracefully across the line. Frustratingly Musandam-Oman Sail conceded second in the final mile. The leg to Portugal from Ireland delivered a great variety of conditions, with tough upwind sailing to Tuskar rock and then Fastnet, fast gennaker reaching south in bumpy seas until yesterday afternoon when a high pressure ridge imposed key tactical choices on the fleet. But, after the breeze collapsed progressively yesterday afternoon and evening they had to deal with a transition zone of light winds for more than seven hours. Guichard's crew were back on top again early this morning. A key gybe at around 0300hrs this morning found them the best of a strong new NE'ly breeze first, and Spindrift racing moved clear of FONCIA. Then in brisk northerly winds boat speeds through the final hours of the race climbed spectacularly, regularly averaging over 30kts. Leg 2 finish Cascais (UTC time) 1. Despite the overcast and winds of 7 to 9 knots, Carolijn Brouwer of Belgian had no complaints, standing in first place among 118 entries from 13 countries and five continents, while Darren Bundock, her life partner is 16 points back in 12th. Bundock, with Jeroen van Leeuwen of The Netherlands as crew, had finishes of 9, 12 and 3, but is also supported by their 1 1/2-year-old son Kyle and Bundock's mother who came up from Sydney to babysit. But Bundock had a better day than Musab Al Hadi. The skipper for the Oman entry, with crew Ahmed Al Balushi, won their first race but was soon sidelined with a severely cut right hand after a collision with another boat after the start of Race 2. "I was trapezing [hiking out] when something broke and I fell down with the tiller in my hand," Al Hadi said. The carbon fiber tiller splintered and gashed the two middle fingers of his hand. He was brought to shore by Long Beach Firemen on a rescue boat who administered preliminary treatment before he was taken to a nearby emergency facility, uncertain if or when he would return to sail this week. The schedule calls for three races each day, starting at noon, conditions permitting, with as many as 15 races through Saturday on the open ocean off Seal Beach a short run down the coast from ABYC. Through the first three days the fleet is divided into four groups, competing on trapezoid-shaped courses. There will be two starts for each of three daily races, with the group matchups rotating with each race in qualifying for the final two days Friday and Saturday. Then the overall top half of the boats in scoring will advance to the Gold division championship, the others going to Silver. ISAF Secretary General Jerome Pels said, "The ISAF Racing Rules of Sailing iOS application is a fantastic way for sailors to reference the rules whilst on the go. With national and international race officials carrying mobile devices around the world the benefit of having rules within arm's reach at all times will be evident." Designed for easy reference whilst on the go the application allows the end user to bookmark specific pages, refer to race signals and breaks down each part in an attractive manner. The new edition of the RRS is available to view on the ISAF Racing Rules of Sailing page at www.sailing.org/rrs and you can also order your hardcopy of the RRS 2013-2016 at www.sailing.org/merchandise.php The ISAF Racing Rules Committee is tasked with formulating, revising and publishing the RRS, with any changes ultimately subject to the approval of the ISAF Council, the final decision-making body of the International Sailing Federation. The formulation of the RRS follows the same democratic process upon which all ISAF decision making is based. Proposed changes to the RRS are suggested in Submissions (which can be made by ISAF Member National Authorities, International Class Associations, the ISAF Executive Committee, ISAF Committee Chairmen and the ISAF President) to the ISAF Annual Conference. These are then evaluated carefully by the ISAF Racing Rules Working Party and during the meeting of the ISAF Racing Rules Committee at the Conference. That committee passes its recommendations on to the ISAF Council. Approved changes then comes into force in the next edition of the RRS. So the 2013-2016 RRS reflect rule changes approved by the ISAF Council over the past three years. With a schedule of nine races to complete the weather for the first half of the week was challenging, always sailable but never easy. By Friday the effects of the tough racing and the even tougher social life were starting to take their toll so owners were glad to hand over the helm to the ladies and then the crew for their races. Sarah Fraser, changing hats quickly, won both these on board "Samphire". With only one short race on Saturday and both fleets away promptly everyone was ashore in time for lunch. In the Cruiser division "Mistress's" fifth win of the week gave her a comfortable overall win from "Sandpiper" & "Folkdance". -- Eddie Mays Overall Results (Top 5): Open (Nordic) Cruiser Natasha Lambert's Round the Island Challenge
Not as quiet as you may have thought though, for one young lady and her team of supporters and helpers are arriving to prepare for an enormous challenge, Natasha Lambert is to sail round the Isle of Wight to raise funds for the Ellen McArthur Cancer Trust, RNLI and Scope. So, what is so special about that you ask, many people sail round the island to raise funds? The special part about this challenge is that Natasha is only 15 years old and suffers from Arthertoid Cerebral Palsy, which severely affects her ability to control her limbs, posture and speech. She has a specially adapted Mini Transat that, with an air control pipe in her helmet through which she can "sip" and "puff", Natasha can steer and trim her boat. She does have crew on board to raise, lower and reef the sails, as well as to look after her welfare. That is what is so special about this challenge. Natasha slipped her mooring in the Cowes Yacht haven at 0530 together with her three support vessels, Volpe from HYS, Adam from Solent Sea Safaris and Artemis in their RIB. The Cowes Lifeboat was also launched to wish her well. They headed off to the start line and the sails were hoisted in a very light breeze and she was ready. At 0600 as dawn was breaking, those in Cowes not already woken by the preparation, would have been woken by the roar of the cannon from the Royal Yacht Squadron to signify the start of this epic challenge. Off she went and we did not expect to see her return to the finish for most of the day. At 1330 she was off Ventnor and going well averaging around 7kts. 1530 off Bembridge and she knew the end was realistically in sight. As she approached Ryde pier she was met by the Cowes lifeboat and, Wet Wheels with some of her friends and family on board, who all set out to help encourage her to the line. Natasha tacked her way west to the line and crossed at 1825 to the sound of cannon from the Royal Yacht Squadron and the horns from the support boats. Natasha's own thanks go to everybody who made this possible, from James and Reece who helped teach her the boat handling and were her crew, the sponsors, those who supplied the support vessels and all those who gave their time and effort so willingly. As for Natasha, she is thinking of the next challenge, possibly round Britain or even the Atlantic. Well Done Natasha! Vendee Globe: Mike Golding & Gamesa
This will be Golding's fourth entry into the Vendee Globe, "I am very lucky to have the opportunity to race in the Vendee Globe for a fourth time with Gamesa. I came 7th in the 2000-2001 edition, finished third, in 2004-2005, and I was leading the last race in 2008 when I dismasted in the Southern Ocean. Clearly I would like to do better than third, and that leaves me with just two options!" Australia and Brazil Win World University Match Racing Championships There was no doubt before the Finals of both the men's and women's competition as to which nations were taking home the titles with Brazilians Renata Decnop taking on Juliana Senfft for the women's title and Australians David Gilmour and Jay Griffin competing for the men's title. Renata Decnop and her crew Fernanda Decnop, Juliana Mota e Larissa Juk dominated their final defeating Juliana Senfft with Gabriela Sa, Luciana Kopschitz and Marina Jardim 2-1. In the men's Final, David Gilmour defeated Jay Griffin in two matches. The bronze medals were won by Julie Bossard (FRA) defeating Alexa Bezel (SUI) and Andrew Shaw (GBR) who defeated Martin Boidin from Denmark.
