Robertson Finds Winning Formula In Second Qualifying Session
St. Moritz, Switzerland: On a day when a lack of wind eventually stopped racing at the St. Moritz Match Race, Phil Robertson profited from a return to the form which has seen him climb to fourth in the Alpari Match Racing Tour leaderboard after four stages.
Robertson (NZL) WAKA Racing finished yesterday's opening qualifying session with a disappointing three losses from three but showed no signs of repeating those results, beating Peter Gilmour (AUS) YANMAR Racing and current Tour leader Bjorn Hansen (SWE) Mekonomen Sailing Team before the wind became too light for sailing to continue.
Laurie Jury (NZL) Kiwi Match Sailing remains at the head of the qualifying table on five points, without having taken to the water on the second day of competition. Johnie Berntsson (SWE) Berntsson Sailing Team remains in second despite losing his unbeaten record to compatriot Bjorn Hansen (SWE) in his first match of the day.
The St. Moritz Match Race will take to the water for the third qualifying session tomorrow, starting from 1000AM CET.

Italian Karma New X-35 World Champion
The storm affecting the Catalan coast has complicated the day for the X-35 fleet and for the Race Committee. The typical big waves that the wind from east creates, twelve knots of wind and a warning signal on schedule allowed the rainy seventh race of this World championship to start. After the start the wind decreased throughout the duration of the race, creating a difficult situation when the wind came down to 6 knots but with the waves increasing. The length of the course was adjusted to the changing conditions during the race.
The best way to win a regatta is winning the last race, and this is how Karma has done it. They were second during the first two legs, trying to catch the leading, Audi Ultra, and finally leading during the third leg and crossed the finishing line in first place. This has been a fantastic way to end a championship, after a grand competition with different weather conditions throughout the four racing days.
Karma reduced the emotion for the final victory but things behind the first place have been exciting. Oxygen has been able to surmount a premature start and after a superb tactic downwind ended up in second place, followed by Lelagain, which has allowed them to end in second place overall. The Italian Margherita, who was fourth yesterday, finished in fifteenth place today, finally ends behind the German Niramo X-Treme, crossing the finish line third today.

Team Wales Dismasts
For local entry, Team Wales, skippered by young Welsh talent Dave Evans and with Team GB 470 Olympic silver medallist Hannah Mills calling tactics, the day ended in drama when the 62ft mast came crashing down. A component failure in the rig caused the mast to fall but it remained intact and the team expects to be back on the water tomorrow - after what is sure to be a long night for their shore team.
Today was about supreme boat handling and minimizing mistakes and both Oman Air and GAC Pindar in the main did just that to end the day in second and third respectively.
The nine strong Extreme 40 fleet were joined by a host of sports stars today that turned their hands to Extreme 40 racing for the first time. Ex-England cricket captain Michael Vaughan got extreme joining Andrew Walsh's team on GAC Pindar, while some of Britain's top sailing talent including Team Volvo sailors and Olympic silver medallists Luke Patience and Saskia Clark, 2008 Olympic gold medallist Paul Goodison and Team GB match racer Kate MacGregor traded in their dinghies for Extreme 40s.
The event officially opens to the public tomorrow with thousands expected to descend on Cardiff Bay to witness the stadium style racing for the first time. All the action will be streamed live on the official event website with expert commentary from sailing expert Richard Simmonds from 1500 local time.

L'Hydroptere to Sail the Ronstan Bridge to Bridge Race
San Francisco, California, USA: On Friday, the world's fastest sailing boat, l'Hydroptere DCNS plans to establish at least one Yacht Racing Association certifiable San Francisco Bay speed sailing record. Subject to weather and finalization of details, the crew -- which includes world-renown sailors Alain Thebault, Yves Parlier, Jean Le Cam, and Jacques Vincent -- will make several speed runs on a 1 mile course along San Francisco's northern waterfront around 2:00 p.m. Then around 5:30 p.m., wind permitting, the boat may attempt a bridge-to-bridge speed run just before the start of the annual speed-crazy Ronstan Bridge to Bridge Race. (The Nespresso International 18 skiff race will also provide thrills and spills 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.)
The l'Hydroptere DCNS speed would be a record that any other boat, including an America's Cup AC72, might attempt to beat.
In speed testing runs yesterday in winds just above 20 knots, the boat reached 44.5 knots driven by skipper Alain Thebault and with the CEO of America's Cup team Artemis Racing, Paul Cayard, aboard. That's more than 20 percent faster than even the bay's high speed ferries (which run at 36 knots). In heavy wind the boat has a top end potential of 61 knots (more than 70 mph). America's Cup teams are interested in learning about Hydroptere's hydrofoiling technology, and there is evidence that some have been experimenting with hydrofoils.
L'Hydroptere DCNS has a California base in Long Beach but is in San Francisco Bay for heavy wind testing and training as it prepares to break the speed record from Los Angeles to Honolulu. It is moored at Corinthian Yacht Club in Tiburon, Calif. -- Paul Oliva

HPR V3 Rule Calculator Now Available
HPR (High Performance Rule) is pleased to announce that the latest version of its Rule Calculator spreadsheet is available on the HPR website at www.hprsailing.org . The Rule Calculator provides an easy access method to determine the HPR rating of any modern high-performance offshore-capable racing yacht given measurement data available from certificates issued under the ORR, ORC and IRC rules.
The example spreadsheet is populated with measurements and rating calculations for some popular race boat designs, and includes a section of boats that are scheduled to compete in the upcoming Rolex Big Boat Series held at St Francis YC over September 6-9, 2012.
The data in the spreadsheet is based on what is known from available certificate data, but may not reflect the actual measurements for a user's boat. When ready to issue, HPR certificates will only use data obtained from credible sources, such as full-measured ORR, ORCi and Endorsed IRC certificates. Any additional data needed will have to be from measurements taken by a certified HPR measurer.
Ratings in HPR are expressed as a metric linear length, with a single-number time-on-time TCF (Time Correction Factor). Corrected times are therefore calculated by simply multiplying elapsed time by the boat's TCF.
Experimental HPR scoring will be made of the IRC C Class during the upcoming Rolex Big Boat Series, and a presentation of the HPR Rule and analysis of the races held thusfar will be made by Bill Lee and Dobbs Davis at 8:30 AM on Sunday, September 9 at StFYC. All who are interested in learning about the rule are invited to attend.
Rolex Middle Sea Race
Yachts flying the flags of 12 different countries are already committed to the race and many more are expected.
John Brinkers is one of the most proficient sailors on the Maxi circuit, having competed in the Transatlantic Race, Rolex Sydney Hobart, Rolex China Sea Race, Rolex Fastnet Race, Caribbean 600 and Newport Bermuda. However, last year Brinkers was racing in one of the smallest boats competing in the Rolex Middle Sea Race. Christopher Opilok's Corby 36, AOC Rockall came a very close second. Eventually losing out by just 30 minutes to the eventual overall winner; the Maltese J/122 Artie, co-skippered by Lee Satariano and Christian Ripard.
Jeremy Robinson is one of the afterguard on Niklas Zennstrom's JV72, Ran. Robinson shares the helmsman's' duties with Zennstrom and boat captain Tim Powell. Like all of the Ran crew, Robinson has a highly impressive CV including; winning the Rolex Fastnet twice and the Rolex Sydney Hobart. Team Ran has a star-studded cast but only two of them has ever won the Rolex Middle Sea Race, Jonathan Taylor and Willie Bevis on Nokia, back in 2003. Rån was one of the early entries for the 2012 Rolex Middle Sea Race and the spectacular 600-mile race is most definitely unfinished business.
"Personally, this will be my eighth attempt and I have never won it overall" Admitted Robinson. "Last year was our fourth attempt as Team Ran and we were in with a good chance but the Rolex Middle Sea Race is a very tough race to win overall, as there can be a massive difference in conditions for boats in different classes. It is quite an unusual race for the Mediterranean, it is the only recognized 600-mile race in the region and because of the time of year, a lot of the race is at night, which again is unusual. This race is very important to the team, we all want to win, it's a box that we all want to tick.

Tom Touber to Strengthen Volvo Ocean Race Management
Touber, 48, who has significant experience with the Race and within sailing generally, will report directly to CEO Knut Frostad and will assume operational responsibilities from Race headquarters in Alicante from September 3.
He managed both the winning ABN AMRO team in the 2005-06 Race as well as the Delta Lloyd campaign in the 2008-09 edition. In addition, he was also engaged as a consultant by Frostad in preparing stopovers for the last Race, the closest and most successful in the event's history which was won by French boat Groupama 4 in July.
In 1997-98 Touber was an executive board member of Brunel International and responsible for the sponsorship of their participation in that edition of the Race.
The 11th edition of the Volvo Ocean Race finished in Galway, Ireland in July this year. The next edition, featuring a new high-performance one-design boat, will begin from Alicante in 2014.

Where Have All The Dayboats Gone?
Primarily however, the discussion will come from the sailors about what they want in place for next year and beyond. Whether it's new classes or the revival of older ones, courses, events, socials, joint events. Everything is on the Agenda because bigger fleets make for better sailing, and that is the aim.
This Seminar follows on from a similar event held by the Royal Southern nearly 20 years ago when the 1720 and 707 Classes were adopted. After many years of great racing, these and other fleets have been in decline. In 2008, 268 Solent dayboats entered for Cowes Week but this year there were only 156, a fall of 42%, with just three 707s and four 1720s. The SB20s mustered 27, but that is down from 83 in 2008.
