The crews were bracing themselves for a wet and uncomfortable start to the race as they prepared for departure this morning. “It will be very demanding with a lot of wind throughout today,” explained Francesco de Angelis, tactician onboard the 62-foot Natali- B2 (ITA). “For tomorrow we are forecasting a certain drop in conditions and some changes of direction bringing lighter winds.” At the lower end of the fleet, the might of the elements will be especially punishing. Camillo Capozzi is a historic winner of the Giraglia Rolex Cup having claimed the overall handicap prize in 2006 with his well-travelled Polaris 33 Ala Bianca (ITA). The favourite for line honours- Esimit Europa 2 (SLO)- led the fleet at 15:45 CEST, ahead of nearest rivals Jethou (GBR), Sir Peter Ogden’s 62-foot Mini Maxi. Their destination is the Giraglia rock, located one-nautical mile north of Corsica. The target is to beat the race record which stands at 18 hours, 3 minutes and 15 seconds set in 2008. In Group A three races and three winners! First race was won by “Audi” from Finland helmed by Jani Lehti, second Austrian “Aquilla” with helmsman Christian Bayer and third one by boat “Quebramar” of Slovakia with Peter Mosni at the helm. Overall results again show “Quebramar” and “Aquilla” fully tied with two firsts, two second and one third place. “Quebramar” has only advantage of being better in the last race and it will be very interesting to follow their fight for the title. However, “Audi” may still have chances who is behind by only 5 points. There is tie at fourth and fifth position between Austrian “Ono” and Croatian “Fly 4”, and “DSK” returned as well. After skipping yesterday’s two races due to damage and also today’s first race because of problem with her sails “DSK’s” helmsman Karlo Kuret and his crew scored fourth in race four and second in race five. They are now sixth overall. There are 166 entries competing in the race, including four Bermuda boats. American entry, Ragana, withdrew from the race at the weekend after experiencing mechanical breakdown en route to Newport. The 2012 Newport Bermuda Race commences June 15 and concludes several days later in St David’s. The RBYC Anniversary Regatta presented by Butterfield Group will be sailed in the Great Sound on Friday, June 22nd. Mar Mostro Is On The Market...

Sirocco winds of approximately 8 knots are forecast www.yccs.com Ailsa Craig Race This summer, on June 15th, the club will stage the 50th Anniversary Race, the first of which was held in August 1962. In that year the 11 ton sloop Tyrena, owned at that time by Dr and Mrs W Glover, was the first winner of the trophy, a silver replica of Ailsa Craig. Many of the original competitors, several of whom are now in their 80s will be competing on Friday racing against, amongst others, the first ever All Girls Ailsa Craig crew on the Beneteau 42s7 Raptor lead by Lee Stevenson. The Race also has a wide range of boats competing from the newest Corby 29s to the 100 year old Ain Mara. This special event, and indeed the other three races in the Northern Ireland Offshore Series, will be sponsored by Hamilton Shipping, who have previously been generous supporters of Sigma 33 racing hosted by Royal Ulster. CUS Milano. The event used the new and innovative ‘freestyle’ sailing format, which was first adopted by EUROSAF in 2011. Freestyle sailing sees groups of four boats racing each other in stages, with the winners of each stage sailing-off against the runners up in an elimination series. Finally, the two winners of the elimination series race against each other to find the overall winner, using a style slalom course. The results of each stage are shown on display board, similar to that used at a tennis tournament, so it is very easy for spectators and competitors alike to see the current status of racing at a glance. The equipment used was the RS 500 sailing dinghy, generously provide by BoatTech srl, the RS distributor in Italy. On the 13th of June in Edinburgh SMAR Azure launches the newest version of RigEdge, the unique and innovative software enabling rig & yacht designers to rapidly define rig dimensions. This version features an aerodynamic load calculation of a three-sail plan, as well as faster structural analysis methods for sails and rigs. For more information, please contact Sabrina Malpede Etchells European Championship In the picturesque Tuscan Coast at Rosignano Solvay Shaun Frolich sailing with Dave Bedford and Duncan Trusswell on Exabyte won the championship for the second consecutive year. Exabyte was tied on points with George Andreadis’ Efrya both having 2 first 2 seconds and a 3rd, but Exabyte was discarding a 4th to Efyre 6th, and closing up on both boats only 3 points behind was Dennis Connors sailing USA 1060 with Vince Brun and Julie who also scored 2 firsts, but the race committees sensible cancellation of day 3 meant that the last 2 races were not sailed. European Championship sailing conditions over the previous 2 days ranged from 28kts down to 3 knots but with very little movement in the wind winning races was all about good starting, straight line speed and smart crew work, and Exabyte consistency won her the event. One of Shaun's highlights from the championship was a tacking duel that he had with Dennis Connors on day 2, even though he could not get past Dennis, Shaun commented that it was surreal, he could never have imagined going up against one of the worlds all time greatest sailors. But the excitement wasn’t limited to the sailing, lunch time starts of the racing meant that the younger members of some crews were able to enjoy late night swimming in the warm waters of the med as the bars had all closed. At the prize giving Shaun and all of the owners thanked Marco and Otto Cimarosti for organising a great regatta at such a wonderful location giving them an insight into what to expect for the Worlds 2013 which will be held at the same location at the same time of year. -- Rob Goddard Industry News In a deal which transfers the Oyster production facilities in Norfolk to the Oyster Group, along with the dedicated team of around 70 employees, David Tydeman, Oyster CEO commented: "I am delighted that Anthony Landamore and I have reached this agreement and that Oyster can plan an investment in production in Wroxham, securing jobs in the community. The BMW logo will be visible on the boom and on a forestay flag. In addition, as a car fleet partner the company provides BMW cars to Esimit Europa. As a project, it symbolises the European way of thinking, innovation and team spirit, as well as endorsing the “European Energy” concept. As such, it is excellently suited to the BMW Yachtsport strategy. Esimit Europa and BMW will also run joint customer events during the Giraglia Rolex Cup, Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup, Bernetti Lomardini Cup and Barcolana,” added Dr Andrea Castronovo, president of the BMW Group Central Eastern Europe. The Esimit Europa 2 yacht sails under the flag of the European Union, is registered on Cyprus, a member of Yacht Club de Monaco, competes for the Slovenian Sailing Federation and on board joins sailors from 7 various European countries. It is under the patronage of the President of the European Commission, José Manuel Barroso. Its main sponsor is the global energy company Gazprom, while the BMW joins the project as the official partner. ------------------------------------------- 2012 is an historic year for METS as it celebrates its 25th anniversary. The UK Laser Association magazine GYBE has gone digital. The first issue in the new format went on- line to members on the 1st June and contained articles from Ali Young on her path to Olympic selection, Nick Thompson on his recent withdrawal from the World Championships with appendicitis, reports from both the RYA and Irish Youth championships as well as the usual mix of reports from regional events and technical articles. UKLA members only need to log in to their website to gain access to the magazine. Besides reading it on-line members can also download the magazine and read it in the comfort of wherever they used to read the printed version. The new format also allows readers to access advertisers directly and to select various articles directly from the contents page. The apps are available on the App Store and on Google Play and are both free to download and watch content. The main focus of the Boats On TV app is to feature Boats On TV’s own weekly sailing news roundup show ‘World On Water’. ‘World On Water’ features the best and most up to date sailing news and action from around the world. All sailing events such as the America’s Cup, Extreme Sailing Series, ISAF Worlds and more are featured. The Android app can be downloaded from Google Play and the iPhone app can be downloaded from the App Store. ------------------------------------------- Drew Marine said it has reached an agreement with Chemring Group PLC to acquire its Chemring Marine business for £32m. While corporate headquarters will remain in Hampshire, UK, the business will be renamed Drew Marine Signal and Safety. The brands being acquired include Pains Wessex, Comet, Aurora and Oroquieta. Chemring Marine is the world’s largest supplier of marine distress signals, including hand-flares, man-overboard buoys, line-throwers and other required rescue products. Its products are manufactured in Bremerhaven, Germany; Pamplona, Spain; and Lara, Australia. Drew Marine, owned by JF Lehman and Company, is a provider of technical solutions and services for the marine industry. It specializes in Cleaning & Coatings, Fuel Management, Welding & Refrigeration and Sealing Products, Water Treatment, Fire, Safety & Rescue.
