Giraglia Rolex Cup At 12:20 CEST today a fleet of 170 boats from 18 countries departed Saint-Tropez to contest the 2012 Giraglia Rolex Cup. This historic 60th edition of the Mediterranean classic runs some 242-nautical miles to Sanremo, Italy via the Giraglia rock. Conditions point towards a big boat race with strong gusts forecast for the first 12 hours of racing. Winds of 30 knots heralded the race start and 40-45 knots of breeze are expected for the passage around the Giraglia rock of the leading boats.

The crews were bracing themselves for a wet and uncomfortable start to the race as they prepared for departure this morning. “It will be very demanding with a lot of wind throughout today,” explained Francesco de Angelis, tactician onboard the 62-foot Natali- B2 (ITA). “For tomorrow we are forecasting a certain drop in conditions and some changes of direction bringing lighter winds.”

At the lower end of the fleet, the might of the elements will be especially punishing. Camillo Capozzi is a historic winner of the Giraglia Rolex Cup having claimed the overall handicap prize in 2006 with his well-travelled Polaris 33 Ala Bianca (ITA).

The favourite for line honours- Esimit Europa 2 (SLO)- led the fleet at 15:45 CEST, ahead of nearest rivals Jethou (GBR), Sir Peter Ogden’s 62-foot Mini Maxi. Their destination is the Giraglia rock, located one-nautical mile north of Corsica. The target is to beat the race record which stands at 18 hours, 3 minutes and 15 seconds set in 2008.

Newport to Bermuda Fleet ‘Extraordinary’ this Year
Newport Bermuda Race chairman John Osmond is “excited” about the diverse crews competing in this year’s 635 mile ‘Thrash to the Onion Patch’ - and for good reason.

The veteran American sailor, who has served on the Bermuda Race organising committee for more than a decade, has described this year’s fleet as “extraordinary” and is absolutely thrilled to see Bermuda Sloop Foundation’s Spirit of Bermuda make its maiden voyage in the century old race.

There are 166 entries competing in the race, including four Bermuda boats.

American entry, Ragana, withdrew from the race at the weekend after experiencing mechanical breakdown en route to Newport.

The 2012 Newport Bermuda Race commences June 15 and concludes several days later in St David’s. The RBYC Anniversary Regatta presented by Butterfield Group will be sailed in the Great Sound on Friday, June 22nd.

Mistral Takes Day One at Audi Sardinia Cup
Porto Cervo, Sardinia, Italy: The infamous Sardinian Mistral, which contributes to making the race course off Porto Cervo one of the best in the world, had been buffeting the Costa Smeralda at 28 to 34 knots for over 24 hours when the Race Committee was forced to abandon racing on Day One of the Audi Sardinia Cup 2012. The competing teams, each composed of a TP52 and Soto 40, remained ashore waiting for the predicted drop in intensity however at 15.45 and with no sign of the Mistral abating the final decision was an obvious one. A further four days of racing are scheduled, including a coastal course for both classes, in the event organized by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda from 11th to 17th June.

Racing is scheduled for tomorrow, Thursday 14th June at 12 midday. Sirocco winds of approximately 8 knots are forecast

Ailsa Craig Race
Royal Ulster Yacht Club’s Ailsa Craig Race is a classic in the Northern Ireland Offshore yacht racing calendar, the course taking the fleet overnight round the famous rock at the mouth of the Clyde and back to Bangor, a race of approximately 80 miles.

This summer, on June 15th, the club will stage the 50th Anniversary Race, the first of which was held in August 1962.  In that year the 11 ton sloop Tyrena, owned at that time by Dr and Mrs W Glover, was the first winner of the trophy, a silver replica of Ailsa Craig. Many of the original competitors, several of whom are now in their 80s will be competing on Friday racing against, amongst others,  the first ever All Girls  Ailsa Craig crew on the Beneteau 42s7 Raptor lead by Lee Stevenson.

The Race also has a wide range of boats competing from the newest Corby 29s to the 100 year old Ain Mara.

This special event, and indeed the other three races in the Northern Ireland Offshore Series, will be sponsored by Hamilton Shipping, who have previously been generous supporters of Sigma 33 racing hosted by Royal Ulster.

Gordon Hamilton, Managing Director of the company, is delighted to be once again associated with racing at Royal Ulster: “Given the importance of Belfast Lough to our business, we like to support Royal Ulster Yacht Club, particularly whenever the club has worked so hard over many years to maintain offshore yacht racing in Northern Ireland. We hope the history attached to this year’s Ailsa Craig Race will make things a little special for all competitors.'

The Ailsa Craig Race details can be found on the Royal Ulster YC web site pages: www.ruyc.co.uk/ruyc/Ailsa_Craig_50th.html

EUROSAF College Championship 2012
The 2012 EUROSAF College Championship took place on Lake Garda, Italy, over the week end of the 8th and 10th June, organised by the CUS Milano Kenny Yacht Club. Nine Universities entered this inaugural event, representing Italia (Verona, Mila, Brescia, Genoa, Parma, Castellanza, Cagliari, Turin and Venice), with three other from Switzerland, Sweden and San Marino.

At the end of the event the results board showed Federico Maccari (CUS Milano) crewed by Federica Wetzl (CUS Milano), in first position; second was Bocca Giulia (UNI Verona) crewed by Julia Grosselli (UNI Parma), and in third place Brescia Nassini Luca and Massimo Collotta, also fro. CUS Milano.

The event used the new and innovative ‘freestyle’ sailing format, which was first adopted by EUROSAF in 2011. Freestyle sailing sees groups of four boats racing each other in stages, with the winners of each stage sailing-off against the runners up in an elimination series. Finally, the two winners of the elimination series race against each other to find the overall winner, using a style slalom course. The results of each stage are shown on display board, similar to that used at a tennis tournament, so it is very easy for spectators and competitors alike to see the current status of racing at a glance.

The equipment used was the RS 500 sailing dinghy, generously provide by BoatTech srl, the RS distributor in Italy. Claudio Brighenti, from Boat Tech, said “the RS 500 is a good choice of equipment for an event such as this, because whilst it is a fast boat, it is easily managed by mixed crews”. SMAR Azure Launches New Rigedge

SMAR Azure Launches New Rigedge SMAR- Azure’s latest version of RigEdge features an aerodynamic load calculation of a three-sail plan, it also offers faster structural analysis methods for sails and rigs and the gaff rig option.

On the 13th of June in Edinburgh SMAR Azure launches the newest version of RigEdge, the unique and innovative software enabling rig & yacht designers to rapidly define rig dimensions. This version features an aerodynamic load calculation of a three-sail plan, as well as faster structural analysis methods for sails and rigs. RigEdge helps rig designers calculate corner loads, chainplate loads, mast-bend and luff sag by taking into account the sailing forces and fine tuning conditions.

“The newest version of RigEdge redefines the innovative rig-design method SMAR Azure created less than two years ago”, said Sabrina Malpede, SMAR Azure CEO.  The new release is loaded with innovative features that enhance rig analysis under tuning and sailing loads. This new version tackles the difficulties experienced by some of our users when trying to quickly achieve convergent rig analysis solutions, especially when sailing loads are applied. The much improved CFD/FEA methods, which are now available in RigEdge, enhance the user’s experience by speeding up analytical procedures and providing more accurate results. Hull editing and sail shaping options have now been included this means that rigs can now be displayed in more realistic sailing conditions.

Etchells European Championship
On Sunday the Etchells European Champion was decided without the boats leaving the dock on the 3rd and final day due to large waves caused by a storm surge in the Mediterranean.

In the picturesque Tuscan Coast at Rosignano Solvay Shaun Frolich sailing with Dave Bedford and Duncan Trusswell on Exabyte  won the championship for the second consecutive year.

Exabyte was tied on points with George Andreadis’ Efrya both having 2 first 2 seconds and a 3rd, but Exabyte was discarding a 4th to Efyre 6th,  and closing up on both boats only 3 points behind was Dennis Connors sailing USA 1060 with Vince Brun and Julie who also scored 2 firsts, but the race committees sensible cancellation of day 3 meant that the last 2 races were not sailed.

European Championship sailing conditions over the previous 2 days ranged from 28kts down to 3 knots but with very little movement in the wind winning races was all about good starting, straight line speed and smart crew work, and Exabyte consistency won her the event.

One of Shaun's highlights from the championship was a tacking duel that he had with Dennis Connors on day 2, even though he could not get past Dennis, Shaun commented that it was surreal, he could never have imagined going up against one of the worlds all time greatest sailors. But the excitement wasn’t limited to the sailing, lunch time starts of the racing meant that the younger members of some crews were able to enjoy late night swimming in the warm waters of the med as the bars had all closed.

At the prize giving Shaun and all of the owners thanked Marco and Otto Cimarosti for organising a great regatta at such a wonderful location giving them an insight into what to expect for the Worlds 2013 which will be held at the same location at the same time of year. -- Rob Goddard

Industry News
After nearly 40 years working with key partner, E C Landamore & Co, on the fit-out of Oyster yachts, Oyster is pleased to announce that it has taken over the Oyster yacht division of the Landamore's business.

In a deal which transfers the Oyster production facilities in Norfolk to the Oyster Group, along with the dedicated team of around 70 employees, David Tydeman, Oyster CEO commented: "I am delighted that Anthony Landamore and I have reached this agreement and that Oyster can plan an investment in production in Wroxham, securing jobs in the community. This has been made possible by the enthusiasm and strategic support of our new shareholders, HTP Investments, who acquired Oyster earlier this year. During the rest of this year, Oyster will now rebalance the order book and work loads across the range, focusing production of the larger models in the Oyster fleet at our wholly owned facility in Southampton, and the smaller models at what is now our wholly owned operation in Wroxham alongside our existing sub-contractors. I'm pleased that Anthony Landamore has agreed to stay with the business to help with the transition. This investment also allows Oyster to develop our custom and refit operation, Southampton Yacht Services, and take the next steps in the superyacht market, developing on the significant success of our partnership with RMK on the Oyster 100 and 125 superyachts, and our history of refitting classic and superyachts at Southampton Yacht Services."
