Banque Populaire V New Holder of the Jules Verne Trophy
Departed on November 22nd at 09:31:42 Paris time (08:31:42 GMT), after having crossed the imaginary line between Ushant (Finistère-France) and Lizard Point (southern tip of England), the Maxi Banque Populaire V crossed the finish line of the Jules Verne Trophy at 23:14:35 Paris time (22:14:35 GMT) this Friday. She undertook this sailing around the world in 45 days 13 hours 42 minutes 53 seconds days at an average speed of 26.51 knots, covering a total distance of 29 002 miles.
Launched in August 2008 in Lorient (Morbihan-France),the giant trimaran holding the colours of Banque Populaire has also established several referenced time on various partials officially listed by the WSSRC for her first world tour:
Under the leadership of the skipper Loick Peyron, Thierry Chabagny, Florent Chastel, Thierry Duprey du Vorsent, Kevin Escoffier, Emmanuel Le Borgne, Frederic Le Peutrec, Jean-Baptiste Le Vaillant, Ronan Lucas, Pierre-Yves Moreau, Yvan Ravussin, Xavier Revil, Brian Thompson, Juan Vila and onshore router Marcel van Triest, are the new holders of the Jules Verne Trophy*.
*Subject to ratification by the World Sailing Speed Records Council
Groupama skipper Franck Cammas was keen to congratulate the shore crew: "Frustration has often coloured the past three years so I'd like to spare a thought for those who haven't had the opportunity to sail. Hats off to Ronan Lucas, the team manager. Between the build and the sailing, he's the one that has played the biggest part in this project".
Meantime Fred Le Peutrec has broken his own record: "Fred had nothing to lose. Bravo to him. He's involved in all the fine projects. He's a superb helmsman who knows how to go fast, with refinement".
Thierry Martel, CEO of Groupama, adds: "Groupama warmly congratulates Loick Peyron and all the crew of Banque Populaire 5 for this fantastic record which, once again, goes some way to contributing to the influence French sailing has in the world".
It remains to be seen if this new record will soon be beaten: "I have no intention of returning to it any time soon. Record hunting is extraordinary, but also very special as there is no direct confrontation, in contrast to the Volvo Ocean Race which involves the world's best crews. That's what I'm passionate about."
"However, you can obviously rack up a time of under 45 days with Groupama 3 and Banque Populaire alike. You just need the weather on your side, along with the gear" concludes Franck Cammas.
Jamin, a dual world champion in the three-crew keelboat, finished with 40 points, two points clear of fellow countryman Tom Otte on 42 points, with one point to third placegetter, Australian champion Michael Nash on 43 points. Nash had led the series going into the final race.
The demanding regatta comprised ten close and intensive races over four days in conditions that ranged from light and flukey easterly breezes to a full on north-easterly sea breeze on the final day.
Jamin and Nash went into the final day of competition equal on 30 points. In race nine, a second place to Nash and a fifth to Jamin put the Australian three points ahead going into the 10th and final race this afternoon.
But Nash and his crew of Mel Nathan and Greg Hartnett crashed to an 11th in the decider, costing them the World Championship. With only one discard race, Nash already had a 13th place and was forced to carry the 11th.
In contrast, Jamin, with Jaap Smolders and Menno Berens as crew, maintained his consistency with another 5th place in the final race, sufficient to give them the 2012 World Championship by two points. -- Peter Campbell

YJA Pantaenius Young Sailor of the Year Award
Annabel and Megan started 2011 by winning the Ladies World Title in Buenos Aires, Argentina in the 420 World Championships at just 16 years of age and despite having suffered a broken mast in one race. They then went on to win Silver and were 1st female crew at the Flanders Youth Regatta and won the Bronze medal at the 2011 Open 420 Junior European Championships.
Annabel and Megan were amongst the 13 RYA Regional Young Sailor of the Year winners who are voted for by the RYA affiliated sailing clubs.
The YJA Pantaenius Young Sailor of the Year award was first presented in 1993. Early winners include Dame Ellen MacArthur and Ben Ainslie CBE, who both went on to win the Yachtsman of the Year title.
In addition to nominations from members of the public for the YJA Pantaenius Young Sailor of the Year, over 1,700 RYA affiliated clubs have the opportunity to nominate. Plus, the RYA puts forward winners from each of its 13 regions as nominations for the YJA Pantaenius Young Sailor of the Year.
The 2011 YJA Pantaenius Yachtsman of the Year will be announced on Tuesday 10th January, at an awards ceremony to be held at Trinity House, London. Finalists for this prestigious title are:

The award will be presented by Geoff Holt MBE, last years YJA Pantaenius Yachtsmen of the Year winner.
Prince Philip Cup
Rogers led all the way to win the opening race of the seven-race Prince Philip Cup on Hobart's River Derwent, scoring a comfortable win from British yachtsman Robert Campbell, skippering Indulgence, and fellow Tasmanian Steven Shield, helming Ridgeway.
The winner of nine Prince Philip Cups as a helmsman and one as crew, Rogers and his crew, Leigh Behrens (main) and Simon Burrows (bow) were at their skilful best today after mediocre results in the lead-up series last week.
Today, it was down to the serious one-design yacht racing, with Rogers going for the pin end of the start line and, favoured by a significant wind shift, quickly tacking on to port tack and crossing the fleet.
After light winds in the lead-up regatta, the Ted Albert Memorial series and the Charles E Davies Memorial Invitation Race, the 13 boat fleet from Western Australia, Victoria, New South Wales, Tasmania and Gret Britain enjoyed fresh to strong north-westerly winds, averaging 15-25 knots but gusting to 30 knots late in the race.

Sanya Bid to Outrun Tropical Cyclone
"Our number one mandate at the moment is to get the boat and the crew to the safe haven in as good a shape as we can, so we can have a few days to regroup and rejoin the race, which we're very much looking forward to" - helmsman/trimmer Richard Mason
The boat's replacement rig, which was only tuned three days ago, is holding up brilliantly, reported Richard Mason, who is acting as skipper in place of Mike Sanderson.
Since the team resumed racing the first stage of Leg 2 on Saturday they have covered almost 200 nautical miles, averaging speeds between 11 and 13 knots on a northerly course for the waypoint of Mauritius.
"The rig's settled in nicely, and the guys are settling into the watch systems of life at sea,'' said Mason. "We're in a bit of a hurry though, because there's a bit of weather behind us that we're quite keen to get past, and get past Mauritius to that safe haven."
The bit of weather Mason is referring to is a tropical cyclone developing in the Mozambique Channel, which is slowly moving east across Madagascar. Mason said the team are "paying plenty of attention" to it.
The 37-year-old said the team were hopeful that as they continue to pound north that the cyclone would tend south and they would escape the worst of it.
Mason estimated that his team would reach Mauritius by late Monday, or early Tuesday, aiming to reach the loading/unloading port in the Indian Ocean, which is not being named due to the threat of piracy, in less than two weeks.
Sanya should arrive at the port in time to hook up with the rest of the fleet for the second stage of Leg 3.
Running the Rhumblines
The talented Opti-sailor has been taught to understand that all of the long hours she has spent hanging from the hiking straps during extensive training sessions on Pioneer Bay have been important.
But she will need to become a serious tactical thinker at the tiller of her dinghy Lorelei when 163 sailors representing Hong Kong, France, New Zealand and Australia compete for the prestigious Australian championship trophy.
She will have some friendly Whitsunday Sailing Club team mates around her on the rigging lawn with Hamish Swain, Aidan and Ty Gummow, Cedar White and Brendan Hoffman also testing their individual skill at the National level.
However Eva now 13 has reached the stage of her career where championship racing has become more serious in terms of results to win selection in the Australian Optimist Team. During an interview last August Eva said - "I enjoy my sailing; it's a lot of fun racing with and against the boys".
As expected Eva has been the star performer in club racing off Airlie Beach and would dearly love to emulate the results of her Idol older brother Klaus who won the Bronze Medal at the 2011 Australian championship on the Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Clubs Pittwater (NSW) courses.
Klaus has since assumed the important role of coach of the Whitsunday Opti team and has naturally improved their boat speed and stressed the importance of achieving a clear wind start.
Eva has proved she has the energy and determination to sail with the best and promises to improve her Australian ranking but she will need to make sure that her male rivals don't 'bluff' her from protecting her sailing space.
Naturally Klaus has enormous faith in the sailing talent of Eva who regularly raced just off his stern quarter when he dominated club events on Pioneer Bay last year.
However while Eva Lorenz has proved to be the most promising female Optimist dinghy skipper in tropical North Queensland she faces a test of her one-design dinghy racing character to produce a championship point score capable of becoming recognised among the best Nationally.
Hopefully happy Eva who simply sails for the love of the sport and the new friends she meets will be rewarded with a deserved result when the championship final is decided on Saturday January 21. -- Ian Grant
Britons Gillard and Brearey Clinch Fireball Worlds
The PRO, Robin Olsen had an agonising task to set a course for the first race of the day with the breeze regularly shifting between 185 - 240 degrees. As the sea breeze tried to fill the pressure also varied from 10 - 18 knots. However Robin and his team stuck to the task and after two attempts the fleet got away to let the drama unfold.
Mandurah certainly delivered the sailing conditions, the sailors made the regatta one of the closest on the water and everybody watching lost most of their fingernails! There is now a long break before the next International Fireball World Championship, to be held in Slovenia in September 2013. -- Johno Fullerton

Ben Ainslie Racing Life after 2012?
A slideshow, purporting to show Ben Ainslie Racing (BAR) liveried America's Cup boats was briefly uploaded to the web - and taken down again, but not before several online platforms got hold of it.
If the rumours are to be believed, then building a sailing team around an individual could be a new step for the sailing event. While many America's Cup challenges have been the vision of individuals (Denis Conner, Alan Bond, Ted Turner, Ernesto Bertarelli & Larry Ellison to name a few...) the team has never been named after the backer before.
In F1 and NASCAR, the naming of a team after the owner is relatively common - think of Williams F1, Braun F1, and in NASCAR - Rousch, Hendricks, Richard Childress Racing etc...
...perhaps the ability to generate a fanbase might be increased if a person is the figurehead rather than a brand.
All will be revealed on Tuesday if Ben Ainslie and his PR team can keep a lid on it until then. -- David Fuller in YachtRacing.biz:
