The start of the second race of the day was troublesome fpr Yasha Samurai, who had to respond to a manouver from Joe Woods' Red that blocked him against the Race Committee boat. That manouver put both boats 2 minutes behind the rest of the fleet. The Japanese representative ended up thirteenth. Winds were predominantly from the southeast at 7 to 9 knots, but with less wind shifts than yesterday. Only two course changes had to be carried out in the last race of the day. The Schedule for tomorrow is for two more races; after six races the competitors get a throwout. Boat handling and tactical decisions in the traditional heavier boats used for the Argo Group Gold Cup will decide the champion and winner of $50,000 of the $100,000 total prize purse. Racing starts October 4th. As the hottest sailor on the Tour these days, everybody's man to beat is Ian Williams (GBR) Team GAC Pindar. He is on top of both the Tour rankings and the ISAF Open standings going in. But you have to remember how tough it is to win in Bermuda. After winning the 2006 Gold Cup, Williams finished 5th in 2008 and 3rd in 2009, and he was eliminated early in 2010 by a complicated tiebreaker. He will have a lot of new sailors to meet on the course who may bring different and unpredictable tactics into play. An accomplished sailor but newcomer to Bermuda and IOD sailing, Francesco Bruni's (ITA) Bruni Racing Team was on top of the Tour leaderboard earlier in the season, but has slipped of late. Before the Tour points adjustment for the cancelled Danish Open, Bruni is just one point behind Williams. Aggressive practice for him and his team is essential. Dialing into the IOD sailing style early, during Tuesday's opening Qualifying Session, will be critical if he is to move on into the final eight. Standing 3rd on the Tour, Torvar Mirsky (AUS) and The Wave Muscat team are not new to Bermuda but have never won the Gold Cup. In 2010 Mirsky came to Bermuda with high hopes but fell to some newcomers himself and ended the week in 8th place, matching his 2009 performance. As the senior member of the Tour, Peter Gilmour (AUS) heads up YANMAR Racing. He is now 4th on the Tour and has perhaps the most experience sailing IOD's and sailing on Hamilton Harbour. He put his name on the Cup in 1995, 1997 and 2003, and will look to emulate that in what is his third decade of Gold Cup competition. During the two-day regatta in Alicante Tauranga will line up against yachts from the first 10 round the world races including the late Sir Peter Blake's 1989-90 race winner, Steinlager 2 and 1973-74 Whitbread Race competitors, Great Britain II, Copernicus and Adventure/Dasher. As a keen sailor, Tauranga's current owner Michele Bruno is looking forward to his yacht being a part of the Legends Regatta and hopes to have Tauranga's original race skipper Erik Pascoli as part of his crew. Aside from the opportunity for these spectacular ocean-going yachts to compete against each other once more, the Legends Regatta will also offer previous Whitbread Race competitors the chance to get together, renew old friendships and reminisce about their round the world race exploits. Mexico's Ramon Carlin is particularly looking forward to being reunited with his 1973-74 race-winning crew from Sayula II - many of whom have not seen each other since Prince Philip presented them with the winner's trophy in London in the spring of 1974. Now in his eighties, Mr Carlin is also hoping to meet with Cornelis van Rietschoten, the owner and skipper of two Whitbread Race winning yachts Flyer (1977) and Flyer 2 (1981). Rietschoten himself is planning his own Alicante reunion with many of the former Flyer crew. The Volvo Ocean Race Legends Regatta and Reunion will take place in Alicante, Spain from November 1-5, 2011, between the first In-Port Race and the Leg 1 start. Find out more at www.camet.com Final Call for the RYA National Match Racing Championship Entries The RYA National Match Racing programme is a sailor's first step towards elite match racing events such as the America's Cup and ISAF World Match Racing Tour and the 2011 RYA Women's Match Racing Championships are seen as a pinnacle event on the match racing calendar. Skandia Team GBR's Lucy Macgregor, who has recently been selected to represent Team GB at the London 2012 Olympic Games, will be competing along with several other international teams bidding for their own Olympic selection. The event is open to all female sailors and teams of three/four sailors weighing no more than 250 kg are invited to compete in the Elliot 6m Olympic class keelboat for the chance to stake their claim and be crowned RYA Women's Match Racing champions. Also coming up is an event open to all sailors! Qualifier 1 is taking place on the 22-23rd October at Queen Mary Sailing Club. The event will be sailed in J80s with crews of 4-5 people weighing no more than 350kgs. The RYA are asking interested parties to get their entries in before Thursday 13th October to secure their place at this year's event. The winners from both the Women's and Qualifier 1 events will be invited to compete in the Match Racing Championship Finals which take place on the 18-20th November at the Queen Mary Sailing Club. "San Diego is going to be a fantastic place, a harbor laid out perfectly like Plymouth," said ORACLE Racing skipper Russell Coutts, who won the America's Cup in the Californian city in 1995. "When San Diego hosted the America's Cup (1988, 1992, 1995), the racing was a long way out to sea. That won't be the case this time." Official practice racing is scheduled to begin November 12-13, with the San Diego Match Racing Championship running from November 16-19 and the climax event, the Fleet Racing Championship on Sunday November 20. The Speed Trials will be held on the first day of the Match Racing Championship as well as the final Sunday. Live coverage of racing will start on Wednesday November 16. The 20 mile long coastal race was won by Moonbeam of Fife III followed by Moonbeam IV, the couple are still on top of the provisional ranking at 4 and 6 points respectively while James Thom's Mariquita coming in fourth is tied at points in third place. Among the big gaffers Nan of Fife scored another first that keep her on top with 2 points, British flagged Avel scored another second and is following at 4 and, thanks to a fourth today the third provisional place is occupied by Oriole. Among the nine Classics Arcadia is in the lead by a little point on White Dolphin and four on Italian Navy's Stella Polare. In the big Marconi class, the reigning champion Rowdy left the first step of the provisional podium because of a fourth, and is now tied at points with Havsornen at 5, the top spot going to The Blue Peter that scored two second places. Among the smaller Marconi Leonore got a clean score and leads with 2 points, but Cholita is still in her tracks at 4 and Anne Sophie is third at 6 points. Irish flagged Shamrock is securely leading the Spirit of Tradition class with two wins, second placed are Gaulois and the modern J Class Lionheart at 5 points. Graham Harvey will continue to run the Marine business until a successor has been found. ------------------------------------------------------ Caribbean Marine Association re-launches with big ambitions The association is lobbying for a "common tourism policy" which would eliminate customs between islands for visiting yachts The Caribbean Marine Association (CMA), which started in 2006 but went dormant two years later, has re-launched itself recently. The marine trade group has set an ambitious agenda for membership growth and lobbying efforts, including backing a common tourism policy that would relax customs entry for yachtsmen across the entire Caribbean. A recent meeting of goverment officials from the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) proposed a Common Tourism Policy for visitors, including yacht owners. "Basically it would work like the EU, where someone might come into Paris through customs, and travel around EU member states without having to clear customs until they leave Rome, for instance," says Association President John Duffy. "We're trying to get the same type of uniformity within the islands to make the Caribbean as a whole more attractive to yachtsmen." Drawing together business acumen in the marine industry, government influence and the technical innovation and engineering expertise of British universities, the Marine Industries Growth Strategy (MIGS) is designed to enhance the global competitiveness of UK marine companies in all sectors of the industry, from commercial and naval shipping to the recreational boating industry. Regarding leisure marine, Mark Prisk, who is co-chair of the new joint initiative, indicated that government funding could be made available for deserving projects with wider industry benefit. "Britain's marine industries are one of our best prospects for high-value, high-skilled economic growth," Prisk said. "That's why we are launching (MIGS) to harness that potential and grow the industry by £8bn by 2020." As examples of what could be achieved, he referred to projects already undertaken by the University of Southampton and the Lloyds Register marine technology development group with Princess Yachts and Southampton company CJR Propulsion that had led to the optimisation of composite manufacturing and propulsion systems. This First 36.7 corresponded perfectly to the compromise between performance, comfort and elegance that remains our objective. Fast at all paces, secure offshore, with an excellent passage in the sea (it hardly ever 'hits'), it is a delight at the helm. Originally conceived for team racing, we essentially used with a reduced crew on the week-ends or for smaller cruises in South Brittany. But cruising does not mean hanging about, the sails are always well adjusted, the route optimized and the helmsman concentrated. We have never been interested in the races around three buoys, but Sarena has several times lead us to racing, across the Biscay Bay (La Barquera) and has enabled its skipper to realize an old dream : to cross the Atlantic. It was the Transquadra 2008 (a race in double for enthusiasts over 40 years old) that was prolonged by two small family cruises in the East and West Indies, showing once again the extreme versatility of this yacht.
