However, it was a great day for Robertson as his team scalped the two top teams on the World Match Racing Tour - Adam Minoprio's Black Match Racing, also from New Zealand and Torvar Mirsky's Mirsky Racing from Australia. Adding to that glamorous wins, Robertson also inflicted defeat on Peter Gilmour's YANMAR Racing. Yesterday, Robertson also defeated Ian Williams' Team Pindar. Ainslie said it was good t see some interesting races today. 'Obviously we are happy with the wins. The difficult part is if we can still hold on for tomorrow's races because the ground conditions are not always the same. Today's conditions suit us well and thus we were able to take control of the boat well,' he said. Sadly, reigning world champion Ian Williams and his Team Pindar are facing an early exit. Boasting of only three wins and six defeats after two days, Williams said he was worried. 'Things didn't go our way. We are in trouble. It was very frustrating for us today,' said Williams, adding to he has to win all his remaining races tomorrow to stay alive for the quarter-finals. Their closest match was against defending champion, Taylor Canfield and his team, who were also undefeated going into the fifth and final flight in the Open Division. Jes Gram-Hansen and his sunburned Danish team also went undefeated today. Team entries of up to a maximum of six people will be allowed, although only one crew change per leg will be permitted to ensure that there is good continuity onboard each Class40. For Race Director of the Global Ocean Race, Josh Hall, the double-handed decision is a perfect fit with the event. "We have been contacted by over 70 prospective entrants so far and they have, bar two enquiries, been from double-handed projects," confirms Hall. "In addition, Class40 and ourselves have canvassed the Class40 membership and the overwhelming desire is that the 2011-12 event has the clarity and focus of having one division only and our Notice of Race has been amended accordingly," he continues. "At this point, nine entries have signed up for the Global Ocean Race and judging from the quality of enquiries we are receiving, we anticipate filling our entry list very quickly now." In line with Class40 Rules, weather routing will also be banned in the Global Ocean Race 2011-12. Surely a 17-year-old sailing alone around the world - part of that voyage in the feared Southern Ocean - is worth acknowledging? I do not know how many of them have sailed around the world single-handed, but this is a mule-headed decision whichever way up you view it. In an age where teenagers are dying on the streets of Britain from stab wounds, a sound lad like young Mike should be 'flagged up' as a beacon of hope to the dysfunctional, the dispossessed and the damned. Bernard Stamm's 60-foot IMOCA will also be used as a platform for scientific research around the oceans. For this purpose a scientific committee bringing together scientists from the world of oceanography and the Lausanne Technical School (Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne) will be led by Oceanopolis (the Brest Marine Institute). Initially, this group of experts will be determining which project (s) will be followed over the next few years. Alongside Oceanopolis, who will be managing the project, and the Lausanne School, there will also be scientists from the development research institute, from the national Engineering school, from the Breton maritime centre, the European marine university institute, the French oceanographic institution, Climsat and Meteo France. It was Marc Edouard Landolt, who enabled Bernard to build his first 60-foot boat aboard which he lined up at the start of the 2000 Vendee Globe. The two men have known each other for a long time. To explain, Bernard Stamm was working at the 'l'Abordage' yard in Pully, after years in the merchant navy. He was preparing Marc Edouard Landolt's boat that was skippered by Bertrand Cardis, the Director of the Decision S.A yard... Pierre Landolt, the late Marc Edouard's brother, continued to support Bernard and decided through the family foundation to build this new boat. When Bernard Stamm and Pierre Landolt thought of Decision S.A. for the construction of the 60-foot boat, everything fell neatly into place: "This is a joint project," explained Bertrand Cardis. It is the Landolt family, who will be the owner of the new 60-foot boat and as soon as the boat is built, another loyal partner will be joining the project to work alongside Bernard on his race programme - Cheminees Poujoulat, which has been the sponsor of the Swiss skipper for many years now. WYRF: How difficult is it currently to talk about the sport of sailing to potential partners? How does it compare with one / five years ago? Nick Masson: The market was very strong until the summer of 2007. The economy worldwide was going well and companies were investing for brand growth. In September 07, unsurprisingly the lights went out and people stopped answering the phone (not just for sailing projects: sponsorship in general was affected). This period lasted until about three months ago, and we are now seeing much more activity. WYRF: So the mentality of the market has changed? Nick Masson: It has taken companies some time to evaluate the impact the financial crisis would have on their business. They have now by-enlarge re-planned their business and have a clearer view on future performance as a result they are again looking for new ideas and projects to stimulate brand performance. There are a few examples in sailing: Addidas and the French/German America's Cup team, the Louis Vuitton Series, Audemars Piguet supporting l'Hydroptre... And the good news is that more people seem to be taking the long term view. WYRF: What are according to you the most important sailing properties from a commercial standpoint? Nick Masson: "Obviously the Volvo Ocean Race and the America's Cup jump to mind. The Extreme Series is also a good example. This event provides the sponsors with regular, accessible racing, on an annual basis. The Series do a great job at bringing the events to the public and not the contrary, like most events try to do. The purity of the racing is sometimes compromised by the need to be close to the public but it is usually well accepted by the sailing community and delivers exciting easy to follow entertainment for the uninitiated. The Vendee Globe is huge in France and it's great to see a growing interest from other countries. Another successful but different approach is Rolex's, they have built an excellent portfolio of iconic events creating a strong emotional link with the sailing community." Cork Week 2010 will have significant cost reductions to competitors, right across the board. Entry fees and accommodation have been reduced by 20-25%. Early arrivals will stay in the marina free and there are significant reductions in lift out and car park fees. The management team is also keen to encourage participation by charter companies and corporate entries and plans are in place to offer assistance to ensure that Cork Week is a fun-filled regatta for all. * Multi One Design S.A. has selected the shipyards that will be in charge of the construction of the 12 Multi One Design 70': CDK Technologies in Port-La-Foret (France), Decision in Ecublens (Switzerland) and Multiplast in Vannes (France). Combining French and Swiss know-how, the three world famous shipyards will give birth to the first MOD 70' in October 2010. Four new additional units will be produced each year, which will allow the start of the first phase of the Multi One Championship, the European Tour, in June 2012. CDK Technologies, in Port-La-Foret, was chosen as project manager for the construction of the MOD 70'. This shipyard will concentrate on the construction of the central hull and the boats assembling. CDK have been building numerous Formula 1 of the seas, particularly Banque Populaire V, actual 24-hour and Atlantic record holder. The construction of the beams will be the responsibility of the Decision shipyard, in Switzerland. The construction of the hulls, will be assigned to the Multiplast shipyard in Vannes. Other shipyards will join this pool of official MOD 70' shipyards, for the construction of the appendices and rigging. -- www.multionedesign.com * More than 100 entries have been received for the CST Composites International 14 World Championship to be sailed on Sydney Harbour after Christmas. Entries to date total 102 and that includes representatives from Great Britain, Germany, Canada, Japan, the USA and a solid contingent from around Australia. Current Australian I14 champion Brad Devine says he is looking forward to the regatta and plans to arrive with his new boat just after Christmas. Devine has built a new Bieker 5 design he bought as a set of moulds from Canada and is pleased with the result. Devine said he had to break his successful partnership with Ian "Footy" Furlong after the 108kg for'ard hand took up work on drilling rigs off the West Australian coast. The donated boat is courtesy of McConaghy, which has signed on as a partner of Australia's largest sailing event, Audi Victoria Week. Variety is the event's official charity and proceeds from the auction will provide equipment, facilities and experiences for children with special needs. The owners of McConaghy, Mark Evans and Jono Morris, say the aim of the partnership is to support the sport of sailing and benefit the community. The Mach 2 will be on display at the Melbourne Docklands and Waterfront Geelong during Audi Victoria Week and the auction will be launched on Thursday 21 January. Audi Victoria Week is expected to attract more than 450 competing yachts over six days of competition from 21 - 26 January, 2010.
