Contributions welcome, send to Royal Canadian Yacht Club Has The Midas Touch Newport, Rhode Island, USA: Returning to upper Narragansett Bay for the second day of the 2011 New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup presented by Rolex has proven beneficial for at least one of the 22 yacht club teams - Royal Canadian Yacht Club - which again displayed remarkable consistency on the race course. And in a repeat of yesterday's prevailing theme of tight competition, today's three races were won by three different clubs which means that there have been no duplicate winners thus far in the six-race series. The Royal Canadian Yacht Club (RCYC) team has retained the overall lead position after adding finishes of 2-4-2 to yesterday's finishes of 2-1-4 for 15 points. When they won the second race on the first day of the contest, they were given the Rolex gold spinnaker to fly in the subsequent race. And, as overall standings leader, RCYC carried the golden chute for all of today's races, and will continue that way when racing resumes tomorrow. Racing resumes Thursday with the warning signal for the first race scheduled for 1100. Competitors leave NYYC's Harbour Court for the race course at approximately 0930 each morning. The winner of the 2011 New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup presented by Rolex will be confirmed at the conclusion of racing on Saturday, September 17. Place - Team - Country - Total Points Nicolas Charbonnier Wins the 22nd Trophee Clairefontaine Nicolas Charbonnier won by garnering points during the first of the two days of the Trophee Clairefontaine, including winning the first RAID which started the competition on Saturday, 10 September. He then demonstrated all his skill and strategy, taking four second places, and not seeking to make any spectacular feats but avoid penalties. His crew members were Tanguy Cariou and Christophe Espagnon. Dutch skipper Carolijn Brouwer dazzled on Sunday with three wins in four Runs. As is often the case, and once again this year, the foreign newcomers to the Trophee Clairefontaine constantly improved from regatta to regatta. Armel Le Cleac'h won a Run on Saturday and fought for all he was worth to make the podium, but the last two regattas were fatal (taking 6th and 8th places respectively), and had to be content with sixth place. Roland Jourdain and Jean- Pierre Dick had alternately good and bad spells, and closed the overall standings in that order. Stay in touch with LaserPerformance on Facebook: LaserPerformance Sailboats Lighter Conditions Allow More Teams To Shine Lighter breezes brought more players to the front of the fleet on day one of the Plymouth Match Racing Championship, with Artemis Racing winning two of today's three fleet races. With the sun beaming down on Plymouth Sound, the crowd on the Hoe was treated to a day of upsets, passing moves, and come-from-behind wins on the waters below. Energy Team led for a good portion of the first race before losing out to Artemis Racing just towards the finish. In the second race it was Team Korea's time to shine, moving through the fleet and past Emirates Team New Zealand for a morale-boosting victory. Emirates Team New Zealand blotted their copy book at the final start, crossing the line too early along with Aleph, with both the Kiwis and French forced to go back and play catch-up. Whereas Bertrand Pacé's French team could make little impact, Dean Barker's New Zealand crew found some great gusts and wind shifts to haul themselves right back up the fleet into second place at the finish behind Artemis Racing, in one of the more impressive performances of the day. Surprisingly, both ORACLE Racing teams struggled on the day and sit in fifth and six place on the leaderboard. James Spithill and crew led for part of the first race but fell to finish third, in what would be their best result of the day. The two teams who spent most of last night making various repairs to their boats ahead of today's racing - China Team and Green Comm Racing - trail the leaderboard. The seeding races for the Plymouth Match Racing Championship continue on Thursday, with three fleet races scheduled. Racing begins at 14:10 local time (GMT+1). Artemis Racing, 27 points * Green Comm disputes a penalty: The team feels it was unjustly disqualified in the first race because of a penalty that didn't appear on the boat's electronic systems. According to helmsman Vasilij Zbogar, the boat's electronic systems never showed they were close to the course boundaries, let alone the fact they even got a penalty. The crew was not aware of the penalty and so went on sailing a great race. They were always in the mix and managed to cross the finish line in fifth place, one second ahead of Russell Coutts. Ran Increase Their Lead. Bribon's Late Title Charge Continues. Showing an impressive level of consistency in light seabreeze conditions, Niklas Zennstrom's RAN crew and the Spanish flagged team on Bribon today both proved able to exactly repeat Tuesday's excellent opening day results and so step further clear of the pack at the Conde de Godo City of Barcelona Trophy Regatta, the Audi MedCup Circuit's title deciding finale. For the event leaders RAN that was a win in the first race, followed by a good second place to increase their lead over Bribon by one point today, while for Bribon a third was followed up by their second race win on owner Jose Cusi's native waters at this iconic team's swansong regatta. A seventh in the second race of the day hurt circuit leaders Quantum Racing's chances at this regatta, but the American flagged team still remain on track for the season's title with a 12 points margin. However the remarkable rise of the Spanish flagged Bribon crew means that since the start of the Region of Sardinia in Cagliari in July they have gained 24.5 points on the Circuit leaders. Bribon have elevated themselves to third overall for the season and this evening stand only half a point behind Italy's second placed Audi Azzurra Sailing Team. In the Soto 40 class Iberdrola Sailing Team were on imperious form over their first two races of the regatta, winning twice by relatively comfortable margins. Iberdrola maintained her pacemaker's position again in the second race whilst the rest of the fleet had a good race. Ngoni had better race third behind www.cruiser-racer.com. Iberostar tool four. All the boats headed left on each leg, but the wind certainly decreased as the race went on. The second Soto 40 race started in 10 knots and finished in 6-7 knots. -- Andi Robertson Overall Conde de Godo - City of Barcelona Trophy TP-52 (after two races) Soto-40 (after two races) Mariette Of 1915 Maintains Lead In Porto Cervo Porto Cervo, Italy: The reign of Mariette of 1915 continues on Day Two of the Veteran Big Boat Rally in Porto Cervo. The 38 metre schooner leads the overall classification with victories in corrected time in both races held. Second in the overall classification is Moonbeam IV, Xavier Tancogne's 35 metre Fife-built gaff cutter. Moonbeam IV is currently on equal points with third-place Elena; the monumental 55 metre double-masted schooner which claimed line honours in both races of the series so far. The event, organized by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, is due to conclude tomorrow with a third day of racing on coastal courses using the granite islands of the La Maddalena archipelago as natural buoys. The fleet set out this morning on schedule and lined up just off Porto Cervo against the picture perfect backdrop of Sardinia's "Emerald Coast" bathed in September sunshine. With a light easterly breeze of approximately 7 to 8 knots, the classic yachts crossed the start line together headed for the strait between the mainland and the Isole delle Bisce where a fleet of spectator and press vessels observed Elena lead the fleet ahead of the 49.5 metre schooner Eleonora, Mariette and Moonbeam IV respectively. At the Secca Tre Monti rock Mariette managed to get past Eleonora and maintained second place behind Elena for the duration of the 25 mile course which then brought the fleet south to Mortoriotto and to the finish off Porto Cervo. The results of today's race in compensated time reflect the overall leader board with Mariette of 1915 taking victory ahead of Moonbeam IV and Elena. Download the Marlow App here: Ties At Top Of Leaderboard In First Day Of Nations Cup Racing In the open division, Mads Ebler (DEN) and Lucy Macgregor (GBR) were tied at the top of the leaderboard with five points each, but Macgregor sailed one more race than Ebler. In the women's division, three teams were tied with five points each: 2009 Nations Cup winner Claire Leroy (FRA), Julianna Senfft (BRA) and Mandy Mulder (NED). Moderate to strong northwest winds varied from 10 to 17 knots throughout the day, and shifts up to 30 degrees put a premium on course positioning. One of the most exciting matches of the day was a dogfight between Ebler, ranked eighth in the world, and Macgregor, second in the women's match racing rankings. "They were close tacking the entire time and Lucy was to leeward, tacked onto starboard a bit too close and there was contact so she got a penalty," said Henry Menin, deputy chief umpire. Macgregor attempted to draw a penalty from Ebler going downwind but he launched a classic defense to her attempt to double jib and Macgregor got her second penalty. "It was all pretty great stuff," Menin said. In the women's division, sailed in Elliott 6m's, Senfft and Genny Tulloch (USA) sailed a match so close they exchanged leads right down to the finish line. Race organizers plan to finish the round robin Thursday. Moderate northerly breezes and slightly bigger waves are forecast. OK Dinghy Gear Review The event this year was mainly held in light and shifty winds, so for some sailors the value this of data is perhaps reduced, however it is true to say that the top sailors rose to the top as they normally do. There were no real surprises. The New Zealand made OK Dinghies from Icebreaker Boats NZ seem to be the boat of choice at the moment as many of the top sailors have chosen this builder. They have also won almost every major event of the past three years. The Icebreaker shape goes back to the late 1960s when it was one of several designs from Alf Lock of Auckland. The fastest of his boats was used to take a mould and the Icebreaker came into existence. The boat has generally flat sections aft with minimal rocker and a fine entry to the bow. Upwind it tracks well and doesn't 'float' around as some of the fuller boats do. Offwind, while a fuller bowed boat would get into the plane slightly earlier, once the Icebreaker does, it has a faster top speed. In the light it is easy to handle and not as 'sticky' as some other designs. Before 2008, Icebreaker hulls were really hard to get hold of outside New Zealand. The Kiwis didn't want the rest of the world to buy into their fast boats, and even though the mould passed through a number of hands, there was never much interest in exporting. But all that changed when Alistair Deaves took over the well used mould, refurbished it and to started to market the boat worldwide, no doubt helped by Karl Purdie (NZL) winning the 2008 World Championships in one of the first production boats. Monsoon Cup 2010: The Memories provides a fascinating glimpse into how the yacht race grew from a simple vision into an internationally acclaimed event. The book also recognises those whose endeavours have contributed to the growth and development of sailing in Malaysia. For enquiries outside Malaysia, please email Visit the RNLI at the Southampton Boat Show Volunteer lifeboat crew members will be on hand to show visitors around an all-weather Severn class lifeboat on marina berth M554 and an Atlantic type inshore lifeboat in berth M488. In 2010, RNLI lifeboats launched over 8,700 times and the crew will be able to answer questions about their training and the equipment they need to save lives at sea. Visitors can see the crew put that training into practice on board the inshore lifeboat during live rescue demonstrations with a Coastguard helicopter over both weekends of the show. Anyone planning to put on their own foul weather gear and spend time on the water before winter draws in can get free friendly advice from the RNLI's sea safety volunteers on stand B9. Find out about cold water shock and why lifejackets are an essential piece of kit for anyone venturing out on the water - as well as how to choose, fit and maintain one. The RNLI will also be encouraging anyone who enjoys going afloat to show their support for the charity by signing up as a member and committing to regular donations. There's also a chance to do some lifesaving shopping at the RNLI shop. The RNLI stand is part of the RYA's treasure hunt, and those on the trail for hidden trophies will get a stamp and an activity book if they visit the charity. On Ladies' Day (Thursday 22 September) volunteer crew member Jo Lynas from Angle lifeboat station will be gearing up the girls for a tough competition. She'll be laying down the challenge to see who can get into lifeboat kit the fastest during the Get Your Kit On competition at the Sea Theatre Live! at 3pm. The RNLI will be at stand B9 and on berths M488 and M554 for the duration of the Southampton Boat Show. Jean-Marc Allaire Found Dead The customs plane from Bordeaux has rerouted to position of the boat. The security helicopter "Dragon33" was sent in the area to the initial researches of man overboard. Around 10:00 a.m., the body of a man around 40 years old, wearing integrated buoyancy clothes with the name of the boat on it, was found by a yachtsman on Lege Cap-Ferret's beach. Jean-Marc Allaire's body was then identified by the Gendarmerie. His family was soon after informed. Jean-Marc Allaire was to participate to the Charente-Maritime/Bahia Transat 6.50 2011, single-handed transatlantic, that will leave on Sunday the 25th of September.
