From first to ninth placed Nicolas Lunven, who toyed with the lead for most of the race, there are just 17 minutes and 46 seconds. Not until 18th placed Romain Attanasio (Saveól) do we see the time deficit build to 30 minutes. Incredibly seven of the ten newcomers to the race are within the top thirty and 60 minutes from the leader. Two sailors of note that are lagging behind could be Eric Peron (Macif 2009) who finishes 34th and 1 hour and 26 minutes from the leader and in particular Francisco Lobato (ROFF), in 36th, 3 hours, 15 minutes and 59 seconds behind. Lobato, who suffered a similar bad start to the season last year to go on and get a sixth place on the second leg, is still considered to be one to watch for by his fellow competitors. Then towards the tail end of the fleet there is disappointment for some, particularly Yoann Richomme (DLBC), Marc Emig (Ensemble autour du monde) and Sam Goodchild (Artemis). Eleven complaints have been filed and have being processed by the Jury of the 42nd Solitaire du Figaro this afternoon. The protests generally relate to broken seals, the loss of the light anchor not rounding correctly certain course marks. Seven of the eleven penalised sailors have been given a time penalty. FredericDuthil (Sepalumic) get a one hour penalty to his overall race time for not respecting the Cussy mark. Jean-Paul Mouren (SNEF) is also given an hour penalty for not crossing the finish line properly. The three boats with broken propellor shaft seals have been given the minimum penalty time of 20 minutes, as it was deemed that no personal gain was obtained: Phil Sharp (The Spirit of Independence), Conrad Humphreys (DMS) and Thierry Chabagny (Gedimat) all are penalised 20 minutes. The Race Committee protested against Marc Emig (Ensemble autour du monde) whose position was not showing on the AIS (tracking sytem), which was believed to be unintentional. Marc was penalised 12 minutes. The other cases all related to the loss of light anchors and were not given time penalities: David Sineau (Britanie Cosmetics), Sebastien Picault (Kickers), Frederic Duthil, Eric Drouglazet(Luisina). Top ten after jury decisions 1. Fabien Delahaye, Port De Caen Ouistreham Bribon and Earlybird Take Another Step Towards the Copa Del Rey In IRC A Bribon holds to the lead after the TP52 steered by Galicia born skipper Gonzalo Araújo won today's coastal race. Hispano steered by HRH Felipe de Borbon drops to fifth after finishing today's coastal track in the same position after times were compensated. In IRC B, German flagged Earlybird holds to the lead in spite of her coastal third place, thus ending their winning streak of six bullets. While the Copa's largest vessels enjoyed the coastal track, the newcomer Melges 32 fleet run two windward leeward races which saw America's Cup skipper Cameron Appelton's Argo win again on the first one, dropping to fifth in the second, nevertheless extending her advantage upon second to seven points. Nicola Celon's 32 footer follows in the overall classification after second and fourth places, and the world champions B-Lin Sailing.com drops to third after a fourth and a seventh. The scoreboard gets tighter in J-80 after world champion Nextel Engineering of Ignacio Camino lost out to Jose Maria van der Ploeg's Factor Energia - Great Sailing Quum, which takes the lead after a second and a first. In X-35 the Italian fleet conquers the podium after Hotelplan was first and second thus holding to the lead, Tixelio is second thanks to a win in today's second race, tied in points with Ave Maria of Marco Balbo. Both RI fleets also had their coastal race today, but the committee decided to shorten it down to 24 miles after the wind started loosing its strength. Rats on fire is leader after today's clear win, and Movistar leads in RI 2 after finishing first ahead of Power Plate. Farr 40 European Championship This will be the first time that the European Championship has been held in Turkey and organizers are confident that the meteorological conditions and the facilities at Ataköy Marina, which was recently awarded a Blue Flag and is the first Marina in Turkey to hold the Five Golden Anchors award, will make for an excellent regatta. The European Championship will take place immediately after the third leg of the European Circuit, also set to be held in Istanbul from 9th to 11th October, so crews will have plenty of time to familiarize themselves with the conditions on the Sea of Marmara off Istanbul. Current Farr 40 European Champions Nerone (ITA), owned by Massimo Mezzaroma and Antonio Sodo Migliori, are looking forward to racing in the new location as long-time tactician Vasco Vascotto explained: “This is a great opportunity to race in a fantastic location like Istanbul. Nerone, as current title holder, couldn’t miss out on this appointment. After a total of 6 races New Zealand’s Markus Somerville (15, Wakatere BC) and Leonard Takahashi-Fry (13, Murrays Bay SC) currently lead the Senior fleet in first and second places. Top British sailor Arran Holman (14, Hollowell SC) moves down to third place followed by USA’s William Logue (13, Riverside YC). After four race wins so far, 2011 Volvo Gill Optimist Spring Champion, Max Clapp (12, Royal Southern YC) still remains at the top of the Junior fleet followed by local sailor Huw Edwards ( 12, Port Dinorwic) who won both his races today. After seven races Royal Bermuda Yacht Club’s Matilda Nicholls (10) still stays at the top of the Regatta Racing followed by Ellen Main (10, Warsash SC). Racing is scheduled to resume tomorrow (Thursday 4th August) at 11.00 am with the fleets re-flighting into Gold and Silver. Flyer 30th Anniversary Crew Reunion Search For Crew Members! For many of the young men from that crew, and Conny's previous Whitbread race winning S&S designed ketch also called Flyer who won handicap honours in the 77-78 Race, these campaigns were the starting point to glittering careers. Gerry Dijkstra, the Flyer navigator and watch leader in '77-78, is now a world authority on superyacht design and rigs. Fellow Dutchman and watchleader Aedgard - Koeke - Koekebakker went on to become Conny's right hand man for the second successful campaign four years later and has since been cruising the world in his own built yacht. Grant Dalton, the sailmaker on Flyer in 1981-2 went on to win the Whitbread in his own right with NZ Endeavour in 1993-94 and is leading the Camper entry in this year's Volvo race in between co-ordinating New Zealand's next America's Cup campaign in 2013. Erle Williams, who joined Flyer for the 1981-82 Race as an 18-year old looking international sailing experience, has since made his mark at every level of the sport from the America's Cup and Volvo Ocean Race, to racing maxi yachts like George David's 100ft Rambler and will be onboard her next week for an attempt on the Rolex Fastnet Race record. Onne van der Wal went on to become a successful photographer in Newport, Rhode Island, Bill Biewenga is now a world authority on marine weather systems and Daniel Wlochovski, Flyer's French navigator in 1981-2 who helped test and perfect the first B&G digital sailing instrument systems on the Dutch maxi, went on to represent B&G in France, and is now a French television executive. Dr Julian Fuller, who saved Conny's life when he suffered a heart attack during the height of battle against Peter Blake's Ceramco NZ during that tight race across the Southern Ocean from Cape Town to Auckland in '81, is now a leading New Zealand anaesthetist. Others like John Vitali, Joey Allen and Warwick Buckley have made names for themselves in yacht construction and sailing. Steve Harrison, Flyer's rigger in 81-82 went on to do the same for Alan Bond's Australia America's Cup campaigns and was last heard from working on the Cup yachts in San Diego. We are looking to locate Steve and other Flyer heroes whose wakes have faded, to join us for a Flyer reunion dinner to be held during the Volvo Legend's Regatta 1st-5th November in Alicante on the eve of the start of the Volvo Ocean Race. Russian Match Racers March On Skudina won gold at Kieler-Woche and narrowly missed out on a top three spot in the ISAF Sailing World Cup series by virtue of podium places with Sally Barkow pipping her to third spot. But the Russian has been in fantastic form since she got to Weymouth brushing Anna Kjellberg (SWE), Olivia Price (AUS), Rita Goncalves (POR) and Silja Lehtinen (FIN) aside today to be the only match racer to head into the last day of the Round Robin with a perfect record. Lehtinen entered the second day of racing with a 100% record but she was defeated in her first race of the day by the in-form Skudina. Nonetheless the Finnish sailor went on to defeat Sally Barkow (USA), Lotte Meldgaard (DEN) and Claire Leroy (FRA) to head into the third days sailing and the final day of the Women’s Match Racing Round Robins with a 7-1 record. Great Britain’s Lucy Macgregor bounced back following a disappointing opening day which saw the Brit win one out of four races. But on day two Macgregor, sailing with Annie Lush and Kate Macgregor, won all four of her races to move back into the mixer for a Quarter Final place. Sally Barkow (USA) and Mandy Mulder (NED) won three races each and lost the other on the second day. Barkow has a record of 5-2 and Mulder sits 5-3 having raced an extra race after the final flight on day one was postponed until day three. The Women’s Match Racing Round Robins conclude tomorrow as the eight Quarter Finalists are decided. The Men’s and Women’s RS:X sailors start the fleet racing action with two races scheduled to start at 12:00 local time.
