A third and an eighth from championship leader Carlo Fracassoli on ITA 803 'Gullisara' saw him extend his advantage at the top to 22 points. Despite only managing a thirteenth and a sixth today, Alberto Bolzan on ITA 716 Saetta, nevertheless moved up into second place overall, leapfrogging over Andrea Racchelli on ITA 735 Altea, whose 8,14, score for the day drops him to third tonight. By far the best performance today came from Petr Fiala on CZE 752 Aloha who won the first race in some style and followed up with a third in the next race, moving him up to fourth in the overall standings. A lacklustre (by his standards) 16,11, scoreline from Tonu Toniste on EST 790 Lenny sees him drop one place to fifth overall. In the all-amateur Corinthian Division, series leader Tonu Toniste on EST 790 Lenny, consolidated his lead in the Corinthian Championship with a 5,4 Corinthian score. Racing at the Boklunder Melges 24 European Championship continues tomorrow Wednesday 27th July with two more races scheduled and an expected continuation to the lightish conditions. Several top teams are nursing at least one high score at this point and the introduction of the series discard after the first race tomorrow may make a difference to the upper echelon of the leaderboard. The Junior World championship returns to Moscow after four years, welcoming 38 sailors from 14 countries and three continents. The hot favourites for the title include European Junior champion Josip Olujic (CRO), Australian Oliver Tweddell, 11th in Kiel or Egor Terpigorev (RUS), who was second at the Junior Europeans. Terpigorev is leading a strong Russian team of 19 sailors. Among them are some of the youngest Finn sailors. The Kotlyarov brothers from St Petersburg are 16 and 15 years old and have been sailing the Finn since the age of 13. The Finn tradition is very much alive in Russia at all age levels. A new addition to the Finn family, is Kyrgyzstan with Vladimir Solenyi who has switched his Laser for the Finn and is representing the Asian continent. While some sailors took their own boats, many others are enjoying the opportunity to use boats and masts provided graciously by the Moscow Sailing School. Sixty complete boats from 2005 have been made available to the sailors and are frequently used by Russian and neighbour countries sailors during national regattas. Nine races are scheduled from Tuesday 26th to Saturday 30th July. All 47 skippers, from first time participants to experienced aficionados, took part in the welcome briefing held yesterday before completing registration and the compulsory measurement and safety checks. "We've already checked twenty boats, measured 13 genoas and 11 jibs", explained Michel Perrouin, the event measurer, this morning. There are 9 volunteers and 3 professionals who still have a busy schedule inspecting the 50 odd sets of safety equipment on each of the competing Figaros. They have to brand the boats, ensure that the Eric Bompard Cachemire sponsor's stickers on all the fore-sails (genoas and jibs), and verify the onboard communications instruments (VHF, AIS). Measurers, organisers, technical team all have to work in strict co-operation in order to ensure the skippers safely and provide for the best possible racing which starts next Sunday, 31st July. Jacques Caraes, Race Director said: "We had a very good day yesterday. I'm happy to see that the registration process took only 24 hours, confirming how professional and organised our sailors are, especially in supplying the appropriate documents. The Figaro Beneteau Class is a well-oiled machine and the competitors are more and more prepared, which gives us room to proceed quickly and be ready for racing." The Hong Kong Sailing Federation (HKSF) Is Looking To Fill The Following Positions (i) Coaching Director: The position of Coaching Director is a new appointment in the national authority's organisation. The successful candidate will be required to assume total responsibility for reviewing, modifying and updating, where proved appropriate, the Federation's current policies and procedures in respect of programmes for Dinghy Instructor training, Elite Athlete and Racing Coach training, Safety at Sea Survival certification courses , knowledge and the ability to teach the HK PVOL course are also preferable. The Coaching Director will thereafter assume responsibility for organising and overseeing the aforesaid programmes, including conducting inspections of Recognized Teaching Centres in Hong Kong. Applicants for this post are expected to be well experienced sailors and holders of valid and suitable qualifications (equivalent to RYA qualifications) to function effectively in the following aspects: (1) as a qualified Coach in varies disciplines which shall include, but is not limited to, and must have extensive experience in dinghy instructor and elite athlete training. (ii) Short-Term Racing Coach: The position of Racing Coach is offered for a very limited period, in the first instance, from 26 Nov 2011 to 25 Feb 2012. The successful applicant will be engaged for the purpose of providing intensive training and preparation of Hong Kong athletes in the Optimist, 420, and Laser Radial and 4.7 classes, for the Asian Sailing Championships in Malaysia from 16 to 25 February 2012. Applicants for this post are expected to have extensive experience and successful records in coaching athletes for competition at Championship level in the above youth classes, founded on their own successful careers in racing at World Championship, or equivalent, levels. Interested applicants shall send their application with full CV details and expected salary to for consideration on or before 2 August 2011. Only shortlisted candidates will be invited to attend an interview. If you receive no reply by 17 August 2011, you may consider your application unsuccessful. Can A 29erxx and I-14 Share the Same Track? "The 29erXX is not that hard to sail, but it is hard to sail well," says Charlie McKee, Olympic 49er sailor, about taking line-honors in one of the races. "The I-14's were very generous to let us race with them. It opened some eyes for sure! The I-14's are very fast, powerful boats, a fairly complicated machine. They are very impressive, but a completely different kind of boat to the one-design simplicity of the 29erXX." Melges Performance Craft has just come on as the US-based builder. Since its inception this process has continued, and the 29erXX has undergone 4 generations of testing and development. A testament to the class, the 29erXX has received encouragement for the development by the sailors themselves, which has allowed the engineers to achieve the right balance of power and speed the rig has today. With the development years under its belt, the 29erXX class has experienced exponential growth, with the number of sailors in the class doubling every season. The current international circuit attracts an equal share of top female and male sailors from all over the world – often traveling to another continent for a chance to race! New for 2011 is the menagerie fleet, a chance for any classic keelboat to race including unique or one-off designs. Racing will be on a mix of laid and round-the-buoys courses, multiple race areas and committee boat starts. There will be two races a day. A full programme of racing and social events has been organised, with a number of clubs hosting evening entertainment. This year's regatta also celebrates two anniversaries - the Centenary of the X One Designs and the 50th of the Darings. Both classes are planning major celebrations. The Gold Coast helmsman Matthew Belcher and his Sydney crew mate2008 Gold Medallist Malcolm Page will leave the boat cover on their 470 dinghy and the cold water sailing environment of Europe to spend a week soaking up the sun and the pleasant warmer winds in the Whitsunday Islands. However they will not be leaving their official SLAM Australian team sailing suits at home as they have accepted an invitation to team up with the 1976 Olympic Bronze medallist Ian Brown to contest the Queensland SB3 Dart sports boat championship during the Audi Hamilton Island Race Week. Naturally Matthew Belcher and Malcolm Page currently ranked as the best in the World and listed among the favourites to win an Olympic Medal at the London Olympics in 2012 will face a formidable challenge when the sails are tensioned for the honour of winning the SB3 Queensland championship. They expressed their tactical one-design racing experience to win the Audi Australian SB3 trophy at Port Stephens against an impressive fleet and remain hopeful of a repeat performance at Hamilton Island. The collective international racing experience of Belcher, Page and Brown naturally lists them as the series favourite but they can expect to face up to a close nip-n-tuck dogfight from the impressive Club Marine Blue crew of Glenn Bourke (Hamilton Island) and his Sunshine Coast sailing mates Rod Jones and Greg MacAllansmith who finished fourth at the recent Zhik World championship in England. Skipper Glenn Bourke already has a host of World championship and international regatta medals recorded in his personal log book and success at this regatta is not beyond the master tactician and his dual Audi Australian IRC champions Rod Jones and Greg MacAllansmith. A conservative Rod Jones who introduced the exciting format of SB3 one-design class racing to the national sailing scene five years ago confirmed earlier this week that the battle for the 2011 Queensland championship is an open affair. "I personally respect the class of Ian Brown, Matt Belcher and Malcolm Page who deserve to hold the honour as the crew to beat". He said. However they will certainly face a serious tactical challenge from the Glenn Bourke steered Club Marine Blue racing team while World championship winning sailors Nick Rogers (Tasmania) and Dennis Winstanley from Hamilton Island have the career credentials to command respect. "Our plan is to contest up the 12 windward-leeward races over four days which promises to provide an interesting insight as the Australian fleet prepare to host the World championship at Hamilton Island in December 2012." Major Refit for Gamesa In the cockpit, a new coach roof is being fitted with more protection and a sliding section to open the area for manoeuvring. The wheels steering is changed to tillers which allows the steering position to be much further forwards and underneath the new coachroof. The second coffee grinder winch system has been removed and the cockpit is smaller, saving weight while at the same time keeping the same amount of power. The team is in fact busy trying to save weight throughout the boat. The new mast, boom and a state of the art carbon fibre rigging package is being completed now by Future Fibres in Valencia Spain. The sails are 3Di a new manufacturing process which makes them stronger, lighter and they hold their shape better. As for energy, they are changing to hydro generation for power, taking out the larger fuel tank and putting in a smaller one, again to save weight and space. As well as a lighter keel bulb and updated electrics and electronics systems, the last major change is to move the mainsheet track further forward, towards the mast, which will give better sail control and centralises the weight of the boat. OK Dinghy Worlds Day two of the 'Scotty Brand' OK World Championships commenced once the wind began to build the fleet set sail for the start area, their speed enhanced by a tow from the safety boats. Racing got underway on the second start, where the fleet were kept in check by the black flag. With a wind direction of 200o and 8 knots of breeze, the fleet of sixty-five headed south west from Mount Stuart buoy. The committee end starters were favoured with greater pressure and they sustained their advantage to the windward mark. There was sufficient breeze for the final beat with Wilcox taking the gun and topping the leader board after three races. For the World Championship it is intended to start the Gold Fleet first, the Blue Fleet will follow, racing on area Bravo. For the Classic & Silver divisions the same schedule will apply, racing on area Alpha.
