Victor X & Despeinada Win Middle Offshore Race in ORCi Worlds
In the pre-dawn hours after over 15 hours of sailing, Action Teamʼs TP52 Aniene 1er Classe from Italy skippered by Gabriele Benussi was first through the scoring gate of 50 miles elapsed on the 100-mile course. Ariene also leads the pack to the finish line positioned in the harbor at Cres, where a building breeze is now sweeping in the remainder of the fleet.
But on corrected time, another Italian entry, Vittorio Margheritaʼs X-50 Victor X, skippered by Dusan Puh, has won this leg among the 56 entries in Class A. Another Italian entry, the Despeinada Sailing Teamʼs Grand Soleil 40R Despeinada, skippered by Claudio Sernagiotto, has won in corrected time in the 63-boat Class B after over 19 hours of sailing.
"It was really tough out there," said Ken Johnson from the US, owner of the C&C 121 Class B entry Grateful Red. "The breeze was light and in streaks, so a lot of stop and go sailing. Our steering system had a broken part, so we had to drop out, but weʼll be ready to race again for tomorrow."
All teams in the middle distance and in the scoring of the long distance race receive 1.5 times the points in each race. With two races now scored, Ariene is winning Class A while with only one race scored Despeinada currently leads Class B.
Light Conditions, High Spirits
As the crews prepared to depart this morning, the overall feeling was excitement about the adventure ahead coupled with slight disappointment regarding the tame conditions predicted for the course. Igor Simcic, owner of the 100-ft line honours favourite Esimit Europa 2 (SLO), last year's first boat to arrive, felt that the meteorological conditions will most likely scupper one of the key ambitions of the crew.
"Our boat is good in light winds and we will do our best. It will be a long race, anywhere between 22-30 hours," explains Simcic, "we have made the boat lighter this morning and we will manage the breeze in the best way possible. However, it will be impossible to break the course record which for us is a pity."
Like Esimit Europa, the crew of Brian Benjamin's Aegir 2 (GBR) had to make some late changes due to the forecast, as tactician Andy Beadsworth explains, "We're looking forward to the race although we've had to make some sacrifices with less crew. It's not nice to leave people on the dock at the last moment, but we're going light with less sails and spares whilst fewer people means less food and water onboard."
Star Studded Finish at Kieler-Woche
Fredrik Loof and Max Salminen (SWE) led the pack into the final day on 16 points, closely followed by the Swiss on 19 with Eivind Melleby and Petter Morland-Pedersen (NOR) in third on 22 points.
The Norwegians won the Medal Race but Marazzi and De Maria finished second to narrowly stay ahead. This left the Swedish duo needing a third place finish to seal the gold by a single point.
But unfortunately for them they finished fourth behind Italy's Diego Negri and Enrico Voltolini (ITA) which handed the top spot to the Swiss whose 23 points was enough for gold. The Swedes were level on points with Melleby and Morland-Pedersen but finished behind them in the Medal Race so had to settle for bronze.
The Women's Match Racing competition saw some exceptional competition throughout the week and it ended in fine fashion for Ekaterina Skudina (RUS) securing her second consecutive Kieler-Woche gold medal.
Skudina overcame Australia's Nicky Souter in the Women's Match Racing final 3-1. And in the Petit Final Souter's compatriot, Olivia Price, defeated Genny Tulloch (USA) 2-0.
The 2011-2012 ISAF Sailing World Cup starts in November with Sail Melbourne running from 6-12 November 2011 before the 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships in Perth, Australia from 3-18. -- Daniel Smith

Etchells Bedrock Cup in the Solent
Sunday was brighter and sunnier but even though the breeze was mid teens on the way out to the start. The 4 races were run in building pressure which topped out in the mid to high 20's as the day wore on. There were many new young guns in the fleet who were giving the old timers more than a run for their money.
It all came down to the last race. Despite missing Saturday Gimson and O'Nolan's team on "Holly Scott" were not far off the lead and the Franks / Bedford / Hall trio were close by, despite, like Meads team, not having won a race so far. As always the Etchells fleet had to race and race hard, despite the paucity of boats still out there and the now solid 25 to 28 knot winds.
The 3 remaining boats all lined up at the committee boat, sails flogging and space tight with Mead first away and in the lead at the top. His spinnaker set was however a disaster, the crew person who had gone overboard breaking the bow shockcord during her 8 out of 10 dismount, and, unbeknownst to the crew, this had become massively tangled in the spinnaker pole end!
While the leaders got into all sorts of strife trying to gybe back to the leeward mark Franks dropped his chute, rounded cleanly and sailed serenely off to the race win. Their Rory McIlroy moment of genius was backed up by a solid "second nine" where they kept it all under control round the last lap to take the bullet and, on count back, the 2011 Bedrock Trophy, from Mead in 2nd and Gimson / O'Nolan in 3rd.
At the end of the day the fleet had seen off the turbulent winds and, only through dogged consistency, seen off the young guns as well, but it bodes well for the future of the class that some of the most competitive young sailors in the country are now campaigning in the class and with the worlds in Italy in 2013, that trend is likely to intensify. For the old guard it's time to redouble efforts.
De Koning/Visser Win First Nacra Infusion World Title
The Nacra carbon 20 sailors decided to stay ashore and safe the boats for the rest of the week, so there are no changes in podium positions. Mitch Booth (AUS) and Olivier Witteveen (NED) take the overall win. In de Open Class only one boat showed up for the start. Pierre Meermans and Oscar Brommer (NED) proved to be true winners and won the whole series.
One Nacra Infusion competed without jib and it turned out to be the leaders Coen de Koning and Thijs Visser. According to the forecast, the wind would build more and more. But was it a successful experiment? De Koning with a smile: 'It depends on how you look at it. We have learned something, but we were not faster. We practiced with it before and we tried it at the North Sea Cup in Belgium, but there we had flat water and it was blowing. We did not win or loose anything without jib, but I had the feeling we needed more practice. Today the breeze would increase as well and we had pretty big lead over the runners up, so it was time to experiment. Nobody else will do it, so if you don't try, you never know. But we only had 15 knots in de first race and it was hard to sail against the waves."
As a result the De Koning and Visser finished 5th and 4th today, which was still enough to win the title with a lead of 11 points. -- Diana Bogaards

Yacht Amorita Re-Born After Tragic 2007 Sinking
The 44ft gaff-rigged sloop, well known in New England waters as one of a handful of restored craft that led to the recent revival of interest in classic yachting, has graced the covers of sailing magazines and calendars worldwide, and is revered as one of the most successful racers over the past decade in WoodenBoat Regatta Series and New York Yacht Club events for classics.
The horrific crash took place on July 7, 2007, off of Beavertail lighthouse in Jamestown RI, while racing in the Robert H. Tiedemann Classic Yacht Regatta.While rounding a mark, she was involved in a three yacht collision initiated by the 94ft Fife ketch Sumurun, striking Amorita's sister ship, Alera from astern, which set in motion a chain reaction resulting in the much the larger Sumurun running broadside through Amorita sinking her to the bottom in less than 20 seconds. Remarkably, no one was injured. Noted marine photographer Billy Black, on hand to capture the beauty of classic yachting, documented the entire ugly incident with a series of images detailing the sequence of events, just before he pulled Amorita's crew from the water to safety.
She was raised and hauled in Jamestown two days later where she awaited the results of a contentious legal battle that was drawn out over two years. When the precedent-setting case, which included several rulings in her favor by US Sailing, was finally settled, she was transported to MP&G Yacht Restoration specialists in Mystic, Connecticut for her painstaking, 18 month rebuild.According to project manager Andy Giblin, noted shipwright and Herreshoff expert, "This was unique from a restoration in that the project wasn't starting with a rotten hull, or tired and worn out boat, but one that was in perfect sailing order when she went down, with many of her salvaged parts and pieces still in serviceable order."
According to owners Jed Pearsall and Bill Doyle, "Amorita has been a family member for more than 30 years.Originally rescued and restored in 1981 by Jed's father, noted furniture designer and craftsman Adrian Pearsall, Amorita's rebuild was just as much about preserving the history of Adrian's work as it was in preserving Herreshoff's."With that in mind, the project had one goal: bring Amorita back to life with as much of her original fabric intact as possible.

One of the Broad's oldest established businesses, Cox's Boatyard Ltd based at Barton Turf, has announced that its ten year plans for development have received the support of the Broad's Authority Planning Committee. The planning permission required by the business was approved at a planning authority meeting held on Friday 17th June.
Cox's Boatyard plans include the demolition of existing boat sheds and workshop, which are in a state of poor repair due to age, and the erection of a new workshop to meet modern requirements for working standards. The company has also received permission to build a wet boat shed which includes two holiday apartments situated above wet moorings and an ecologically friendly boat wash-down facility for the marina.
Cox's Boatyard dates back to the 1800's and is reputed to be where Lord Nelson learned to sail. It was saved from insolvency in 1995 by a consortium of local business people who were passionate supporters of the yard. Remaining protective of the traditional history of the yard and its unique location, the developments to date have resulted in an increase in business from Cox's reputation for high quality and skilled boat repairs and traditional wood working
Effective immediately, Quantum Sail Design Group (QSDG) will no longer be affiliated with the UK sail lofts owned by John Parker and Peter Kay. Located at Suffolk Yacht Harbour on the east coast and near Hamble Point Marina on the Solent, these sail lofts will continue as independently owned and operated sail lofts under the name Parker & Kay Sailmakers.
