Contributions welcome, send to Fleet Heads Offshore in ORCi World Championship The long distance race in ORC championships consists of two races: a long race scored on the time taken to complete the entire course, and a middle-distance race scored on the time taken at a scoring gate placed halfway into the course. Each is given a scoring coefficient of 1.5, and is not discardable in the overall scores for the event. Yesterdayʼs Class A winner, the Croatia-based Grand Soleil 56R Marina Kastela skippered by Mate Arapov, may be a favorite to win given the teamʼs familiarity with the local conditions and the designʼs prowess in light air. But the two TP52ʼs in the class, Action Teamʼs TP52 Aniene 1er Classe from Italy and Felix Reidlʼs Austrian-based Aquila, as well as yesterdayʼs 3rd- placed GP42 Airis owned by Roberto Monti and skippered by Cesare Bressan, may have the right combination of light weight and generous sail area needed in the light air to out-pace the generous time allowances owed their slower rivals. www.scor.hr/regate/2011e/orcwc.htm Danish 49er Crews Face Off on Final Day at Kieler Woche After 15 races in the 49er just five points separate the Danes with Kruger-Andersen and Thorsell leading the way on 69 points. Throughout the week the lead has changed hands on numerous occasions in the 49er but with just the Medal Race to go the gold medal may be on its way to Denmark. With three race wins Norregaard and Lang have recorded more race victories than their compatriots, who only have a solitary win. But after a busy schedule, which saw the 49er teams' sail in four races on three of four days, it is Kruger-Andersen and Thorsell who have proved to be the most consistent and take a slender advantage into the Medal Race. Behind the Danes are two German teams in the form of World #16 duo Tobias Schadewaldt and Hannes Baumann and World #20 pair Lennart Briesenick-Pudenz and Morten Massman. The pair should not be ruled out as they sit on 77 and 79 points respectively. Away from the 49er it was a frustrating fourth day for sailors with some racing in classes cancelled due to light winds but for Przemyslaw Miarczynski (POL), he added another race win to his card to guarantee at least a silver medal in the Men's RS:X. The Polish sailor has been in emphatic form throughout the week notching up seven race wins out of the nine he has sailed. He did not sail Race 10 and discards the automatic 45th place to go into the Medal Race on 12 points. The Women's RS:X Medal Race will be a closer affair as Jessica Crisp (AUS) and Moana Delle (GER) enter the final day with just one point separating them at the top of the leader board. Crisp jumped from fourth to first after finishing 3-4 on the penultimate day whilst Delle retained her second place. Only one race was possible in the Star class and it was won by Alexander Hagen and Marko Hasche (GER). Despite not starting the sole race of day four, Fredrik Loof and Max Salminen (SWE) continue to lead on 16 points. In the Women's Match Racing competition it was an all Australian battle in the first semi final as Nicky Souter faced Olivia Price. And it was the former who came out on top defeating Price 3-1. Meanwhile in the second semi final Ekaterina Skudina (RUS) and Genevieve Tulloch (RUS) had a closer contest with the Russian coming out on top with a 3-2 victory. And in the 2.4mR despite an OCS in Race 9 Megan Pascoe (GBR) came from behind to clinch the gold medal. Trailing Heiko Kroger (GER) for the majority of the week Pascoe finished second in the final race whereas the German went 9-6 to fall to second place. Sweden's Hans Asklund claimed bronze. There was no racing on the fourth day in the Laser, Laser Radial, Finn or the Men's 470. So the top ten in each class will go into the Medal Race with it all to play for. The Finn and Women's RS:X get the Medal Races underway tomorrow starting at 10:30 local time. -- Daniel Smith Inshore Series Spoils Settled It proved to be another successful day for Alegre (GBR), which has dominated her opposition. "Conditions today in a way were easier than yesterday except for one section of the race," explains owner and skipper Andres Soriano, "we are very pleased with the crew work in these light conditions. It is important that everyone is in tune with the boat and that the crew gave their all under hot and uncomfortable conditions." Tactician Chris Main was equally delighted with the yacht's performance: "We had a really good race today, the wind played into the leaders' hands as it shifted and followed us around. Last year we dominated the inshore series and finished second in the long race and we are now hoping to go one better this year." Today's winners were: Alegre (GBR) in Group 0 IRC, Imagine (GER) in Group A IRC, Tchin Tchin (FRA) in Group B IRC and Manida (ITA) in Group B ORC. After two races, Alegre (GBR) won their class in Group 0 IRC, Early Bird (GER) were winners of Group A IRC and a Rolex Submariner, Tchin Tchin (FRA) took Group B IRC and Manida (ITA), Group B ORC. With the inshore race series now having concluded, the near 200 crews competing in the offshore competition are busy preparing their yachts for tomorrow's race. Renowned navigator Juan Vila has sailed around the world numerous times, won the America's Cup and Volvo Ocean Race, competed at the Rolex Sydney Hobart Race, yet the historic Giraglia Rolex Cup is a significant omission from his proud sailing résumé. A key component of the afterguard onboard the mighty100-ft Esimit Europa 2 (SLO), Vila is beaming at the opportunity of competing in tomorrow's offshore marathon: "The Giraglia is one of the mythical races in the Mediterranean. I've been looking forward to ticking this off as it is a race I've always wanted to do." Vila has been taking a close interest in tomorrow's potential conditions: "We are expecting light air and some frustrating times at the beginning on the way to the Giraglia. Fortunately, after which a south easterly breeze should start to develop on the eastern side of Corsica, of around 10-15 knots, allowing us to sail in medium conditions to Genoa. We will try to get as quickly as we can to the stronger breeze." Wight Vodka Heads West to Plymouth Race Week Chris Arscott, Commodore of the Royal Western Yacht Club, commented "We're so glad to have Ritu and the crew from Wight Vodka onboard to support this bi-annual regatta. From the beginning, we set the theme of Plymouth Race Week as 'the Yachtsman's Regatta' as we wanted competitive racing on the water to be followed by fantastic social events off the water." International Race Officer Mike Pearson will head-up Plymouth Race Week's team of international and national race officials. The team are setting challenging courses both inside and outside of Plymouth's breakwater, with races running from Thursday 7th July through Sunday 11th July. With three courses planned including an extra for white sail, the race officers are designing courses to ensure excellent, competitive racing for each individual class. Chris Arscott continued, "We first met Ritu when we held a Wight Vodka party at Pentillie Castle to bring the many teams, family and friends together for the 2009 OSTAR. That evening was very special, as it was the first time that the 33 sailors got to know one another prior to heading off across the Atlantic. Spinnaker Tales The present Flag Officers of the Maroochy Sailing Club which has the proud history of promoting dingy sailing on the tricky Sunshine Coast estuary for the past 52 years have issued the Notice Of Race which has attracted entries from Hobart, Sydney, Newcastle, Bowen and Sunshine Coast crews. Heading the small but impressively competitive fleet will be the specialist Middle Harbour Yacht Club skipper and Montreal Olympic Bronze Medallist Ian Brown and his One Design Racing team while Rod Jones who finished 4th in the 2011 World Championship in England returns to the tiller of Club Marine. "Glenn Bourke our World championship skipper is unavailable so I will get the chance to 'drive' again". Rod Jones said. However Rod Jones the only skipper to win two Audi Australian IRC ocean racing championships is an ideal deputy having the personal versatility to be an equally proficient crew member after he combined with Glenn Bourke and Greg MacAllansmith to record the best ever result by an Australian crew in the recent SB3 World championship. Close tactical racing for the SB3 Wintersun trophy will become a family affair for Rod Jones and Greg MacAllansmith when they combine their experience to encourage their sons Luc Jones and Joel MacAllansmith to enjoy their initial introduction to one design fleet racing with and against a number of Australia's high profile sailors. For 9 year old Optimist dinghy sailor Luc Jones the youngest sailor it will mean the first step of following his father's footsteps. Interest will also focus on the talented Queensland Academy of Sport Laser skipper Klade Hauschildt when he contests his first major SB3 regatta with Maroochy River sailors Toby and John Pearce. This trio of individually clever sailors face the task of overcoming the important class racing experience but the nominated skipper Klade Hauschildt who is ranked among the best in Australian Olympic class racing is expected to make up any shortfall in boat speed with his proven tactical strategy. However the career results of Ian Brown supported with the class racing experience of his One Design Sailing crew suggests they will start as the regatta favourite closely followed by Mooloolaba helmsman Phil Gray in Dulon Polish, Rod Jones Club Marine and Klade Hauschildt OceanBuro 1. This will be the first of a series of regattas off Mooloolaba which will provide the Australian fleet with the vital opportunities to improve their boat speed and crew technique in preparation to be on the pace for the World championship at Hamilton Island in December 2012. -- Ian Grant Two More Join the RC44 Tour MAG Racing (POL), is owned the by Krzysztof Krempec, the President of fire protection systems specialists the Mercor group. Krempec is an accomplished sailor with over 30 years sailing experience, he has won the Polish 505 Championship twice, before stepping into the X-35 class where he won the Polish Championship three times. His tactician is former ISAF Match Racing World Championship-winning crewmember (Jablonski Sailing Team), Piotr Przybylski. The team steps into the boat vacated by Poland's previous RC44 contenders Organika, which competed on the 2007 and 2008 Tour. Mag Racing will be joined by RUS-7 Sail Racing Team powered by AnyWayAnyDay.com, the fourth team to represent Russia in the 2011 Tour. Lead by Kirill Podolsky (RUS), another seasoned sailor, the team will be drawing from their experience racing together in the Audi Med Cup, TP52 Championship. The team has purchased Chris Bake's old Team Aqua, the boat that finished third at the opening event of the 2011 season in San Diego. Podolsky will be joined by a crew of professionals and amateurs, who have sailed together over the past ten years since they started to participate in world-class competitions in 2001. The team started racing in an IMX 45, competing as part of the European team at the Rolex Commodores Cup in 2004. They then progressed to a Grand Soleil 42 before purchasing their first TP52 in 2005, racing in all Audi MedCup and World Championship events for the 2008-2009 seasons. 2011 RC44 Championship Tour dates: 2 - 6 March- Oracle RC44 Cup San Diego, USA Portimao Portugal Match Cup The 12 contending teams hit the azure waters of Portimao today for the Practice Session, their last chance to iron out any problems, acclimatise to their surroundings and to the SM40 boats they will be competing in before the start of Qualifying tomorrow. One skipper who is looking to make a big impact on the scoreboard here in Portugal is 2003 World Match Racing Tour champion Radich (DEN) Adrian Lee & Partners. He had an impressive 2010 season, making the podium in each of the four events he competed in. Radich's 2011 season also started strongly, notching up a fourth-place finish at Match Race France and a sixth at Match Race Germany before missing the Korea Match Cup. Radich has already tasted relative success at the Portugal Match Cup having reached the Semi Finals in 2005. But now the 35-year-old, currently lying in sixth position in the overall standings, is aiming to go one step better as he returns to the thick of the action. One of the men standing in Radich's way is 2010 Portimao Portugal Match Cup winner and four times world champion Peter Gilmour (AUS) YANMAR Racing. After a disappointing start to the season coming seventh at Match Race France, Gilmour has proven he is a force to contend with finishing second at Match Race Germany and fourth at the Korea Match Cup. Following a strong performance in the opening rounds of Match Race France, Portuguese skipper Alvaro Marinho (POR) Seth Sailing Team will be looking to make the most of his insider knowledge of local weather conditions as he takes on the Tour Card Holders on home waters. Three monohulls also withdrew and another retired immediately after the start. Another put into Yarmouth and retired. Making good today behind the leader are corinthian sailors, Royal Southampton's Bryan Sheinman and co-skipper Ed de Mesquita on board the 40ft Oyster, Wild Oyster. Basque sailors Txema Garcia and Santiago Orlando on the French built yacht, Baobab, and Wild Oyster were closing on Ushant this morning, and Nyda, Geoffrey Taylor and Graham Tracey's Ovni from the Island Sailing Club, was back on course again after riding the sea conditions south of Portland, and today was another 50 miles back. Race director Roger Townsend and Chief Race Officer left Southampton for destination port Hondarribia in northern Spain today. Mr Townsend said: "We have altered our plans for Hondarribia to take account of the revised situation, but it is felt essential that the Club should be represented at the finish to greet and congratulate any finishers." Tough Conditions For Diehards 'I am too old for this", says Mitch Booth with a smile. He watches the action on the North Sea, but dressed in wall clothes and with dry hair. 'Let's say we are preserving the boat for the rest of the week, or is it the helm?" He didn't race today, but the runners up Xander Pols and Sascha Larsen did. Pols: 'We could double the rest of the fleet. I think we were the only one who hoisted the spinnaker. It was pretty extreme. The waves broke at the top mark. The main reason why we went out today, is to test the boat in these conditions. We wanted to know whether the Nacra 20 performs in stronger wind as well and she does." Booth and Witteveen are still leading, followed by Pols and Larsen. Another two bullets for leaders Nacra Infusion Worlds Coen de Koning and Thijs Visser enjoyed the stronger breeze and swell to the most. The boys were on fire and added two more bullets to their series. They built up a lead of 11 points after seven races. Visser: 'We were really up to speed in the first race, especially downwind. We were first at the top mark, did a good set up and only pushed when others caught up a bit. The second race was a photo finish with Adam and Jamie. I didn't know who won." Bad luck for Piggott/Garcka Willem Geijssen and Dominique van Asselt from the Netherlands gave a good show of mixed multihull sailing. They sailed conservatively, stayed upright and finished third and fourth. 'Dominique did an amazing job", said Geijssen proudly. 'She is quick and upwind she doesn't stop sheeting. It was amazing." The pair climbed to a fourth position overall. Their mixed crew competitors Jorden Veenman and Marja van Helden dropped to a sixth place. -- Diana Bogaards Top five Nacra Infusion Worlds 2011 (33 entries) after 7 races, including a discard: 1. She was designed in 2006 after extensive towing-tank testing and with the original TP52 ideas in mind; to be extremely fast around the cans but to race safely offshore. In her two MedCup seasons she raced without incident and showed good speeds inshore and offshore. Due to her very high spec carbon prepreg construction she started her second life as an IRC race yacht without problems and won almost all the races she has done since. She is now for sale and offers her new owners lots of potential for a very succesful IRC campaign.
