The day started almost windless with brilliant, burning hot sunshine, but it was soon obvious a sea breeze was building and by the time the fleets reached the race areas, there was a solid 12 knots in place. Today, Oscar flag was flying on all the downwind legs, with the wind building to around 15-16 knots before easing off for the finish of the final race as an inland thunderstorm strolled past. Tonight the Hungarians put on a presentation and buffet to announce the inaugural Finn Masters European Championships, to be held in Tihany on Lake Balaton for five days from 17th September. Instigator of the event, Antal Gabor, aka Pata (HUN) said, "We felt there was a need to have a second event for Masters, who are looking for other events to sail. We held an internet poll to see if the idea would be popular and there was general agreement that it was. So we will hold the first event and see what happens. I think we will get more than 50 boats and anything over 100 could be considered a great success." On Wednesday morning there is the Masters Meeting, which will be followed by more racing from 13.00. Top ten after four races 1. Allen Burrell, GBR, 4 points Normandy Sailing Week After three days of competition and six victories, the crew from northern France treated themselves to the luxury of not racing the last day, as the top step of the M34 podium was already theirs for the taking. Behind them, tied on points, Toulon Provence Mediterranee and Bretagne - Credit Mutuel finished second and third respectively. The new racing boats for the Tour de France à la Voile really put on a great show throughout the event. Meantime the J80 Paprec Bretagne continued to put up a great performance all the way to the finish to take honours today. With six out of eight races won, they left their rivals no chances. Second place in the ranking was very hotly contended but ultimately it was the Vog crew who bagged it, just a point ahead of the all-female crew on Jaws. Today saw an indisputable victory go to Arthur Herreman and his crew on the First 7.5. As such they qualify for the French Espoir Crewed Championship, which will be held in Le Havre in August. Pierre Viard took second place ahead of Olivier Gonse. In the Longtze series the results came as no surprise. Longtze team, which have dominated proceedings since the first day, have taken a win in the overall ranking, with an eight point lead over second placed Rapetous. In the Laser SB3, the English sailor, world champion 2010, Jerry Hill, won all of today's races and ultimately earned himself the top spot. Behind him the Breton crew from Cote d'Armor, skippered by Cedric Fleury, finished second, followed by the local Lower Normandy team on Bartabac. The Class 6.50s meantime really kept everyone on tenterhooks in this event. However, thanks to three victories today, the outright win ultimately went to Nemo, who finished ahead of MTD Active/Medical and Krapo. Finally, in the Seascape 18, the only English crew of the series earned victory. Gracie, skippered by Peter Wanstall, finished in first place ahead of Atlantiscape and Belisca. English domination was undeniable in the IRC 1 category. Quokka 8 ultimately took line honours in this 6th edition of Normandy Sailing Week after a fierce battle against Tokoloshe and Maridadi, which finished second and third respectively. In IRC 2, Mat 1010 skippered by Peter Morton took the rest of the fleet by storm ahead of EMG Happy Hours and Banshee. Meantime, the local Le Havre crew on Foggy Dew scored a win in IRC 3 and Illico.com followed suit in IRC 4. -- Translated by Kate Jennings Class40 "Vaquita" Wins Line Honors in Cinquecento Per Due The race is organized by the CNSM, the Circolo Nautico Porto Santa Margherita since 1974, leading over 500 miles from Caorle to the Tremiti Islands leaving the Croatian Island of Susak to starboard and back. Vaquita sailed by Christof Petter and Team Russia Volvo Ocean Race skipper Andreas Hanakamp stayed in the leading group from the start, changing places with the Slovenian Class 40 BOXX. After passing Susak the ECMWF as well as the Aladin weather data showed a clear advantage further to the east near the island of Dugi Otok. Vaquita stayed in this wind band and rounded the Tremiti Islands with a lead of roughly 10 miles over the GP42 AIRIS and the Class40 BOXX. On the way back north in a fresh southeasterly breeze, Vaquita averaged 15+ knots and extended the lead over the other yachts to finish first off Caorle after battling severe thunderstorms before passing Susak for the second time. Vaquita: The yacht has been named after an endangered whale species in the Bay of California to support the work of the WDCS, the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society. Following the decision of ISAF to limit the number of Sailing World Cup Regattas to one per continent (two in Europe between 2013 - 2016) EUROSAF, in co-operation with some event organisers, have decided to reinstate the EUROLYMP Sailing Circuit, in order to offer a wider selection of high quality sailing events, for elite and talented sailors from all over the world, in Olympic Classes. The meeting, which commences at 11.00, is open to all interested event organisers who may wish to participate in the discussions leading up to the reinstatement of these regattas, which are set to commence following the Olympic Regatta in August 2012. New innovations, formats and ideas will all be considered as part of the reintroduction of the EUROLYMP Sailing Circuit to make it the premier sailing series in Europe. Dan Ibsen, a Vice-President of EUROSAF and Secretary General of the Danish Sailing Federation, said "It is important that Europe maintain the same standards in the quality of these regattas and regatta management, as was previously achieved under the ISAF umbrella, even after the changes take place. Glenn Bourke a former Australian Olympian and multiple World Champion had a distinct purpose in mind when he elected to join the dual Audi Australian IRC class ocean racing champions Rod Jones and Greg MacAllansmith for the World championship. The Chief Executive Officer of the international standard Hamilton Island Resort has a special affiliation with racing in the high performance SB3 one design class and needed the opportunity to experience a World series before the class host their first World championship outside of Europe at Hamilton Island in December 2012. As expected the tactically strong team of English crews racing with the valued experience of sailing on home waters dominated the medals with former champion Geoff Carveth 46 pts winning the Gold Medal by 4 points from Rob Greenhalgh with Craig Burlton another 26 points astern third with the crew on Club Marine finishing just 7 points away fourth. This was a remarkable result which has set the foundation for the Australian fleet to show their class when the sails are tensioned for the 2012 series at Hamilton Island. Meanwhile Rod Jones and his OceanBuro performance racing syndicate have issued the Notice of Race for the 2011 Wintersun regatta to be contested off Mooloolaba on the weekend of July 23-24 followed by the 2011 Queensland championship during the Audi Hamilton Island Race Week on August 22-26. Both championships have attracted the attention of several World champions including the highly skilled Australian Olympian Nathan Outteridge who clearly won the Australian championship before finishing 12th in the World championship. However while this was considered to be a disappointing result for Nathan Outteridge he will be personally tactical tuned for a major assault on the World title at Hamilton Island. He and crew mate Ian Jensen are currently ranked as the World's best in the Olympic 49er class leading into the London Olympics. Nathan Outteridge has already indicated his intention to contest the 2012 World's at Hamilton Island while the regatta continues to gain interest with specialist one-design sailors Australia wide. This has allowed the SB3 to become Australia's fastest growing One-design fleet with the recent sale of five new boats which will be prepared to contest their boat speed in the Wintersun series off Mooloolaba next month and the Audi Queensland championship at Hamilton Island in August. -- Ian Grant Class 40s In The Fastnet - International Battle Royal Tanguy de Lamotte has enjoyed tremendous success since winning the Rolex Fastnet Race in 2009. The young Frenchman defeated the highly experienced Giovanni Soldini (ITA), by just over an hour in an intense, boat-on-boat battle. Soldini is back, but the racing is likely to offer an intense contest. The Class 40 Rolex Fastnet Race may well provide the closest finish of the event. "It is great to see Giovanni back in the Class after being away for a while." explained Tanguy. "He knows his boat very well and I am sure he will be very excited to be back in the Class and compete in the race. Giovanni has done a lot of miles in his boat and he has a lot more experience than me, but we did manage to beat him in the last Fastnet. He is a strong competitor but there are many others, like Concise, who will be hard to beat - the competition is always close in the Class 40s. In my last race, The Normandy Channel Race, we won by just a few boat lengths after 700 miles of sailing." "To win you have to make just one less mistake than everyone else but the ambience in the fleet is fantastic - it is serious racing with a friendly atmosphere. On the dock we are all friends, everybody helps each other, and the class has a truly great spirit." Tanguy de Lamotte's Initiatives Saveurs - Novedia Group is the yacht to beat in the 2011 Rolex Fastnet Race, but the talented young sailor from Normandy, expects a firm but fair fight around the Fastnet Rock. America's Cup Donors Waiting for Tax Exemptions to Help AC34 The hitch? Tax-Exempt status. The new deal America's Cup is not a commercial sporting event, but a charity. Rather than convince commercial partners of the ROI to be gained, private donors will fund the cup in return for tax breaks. Tax-exempt approval is expected in August. America's Cup organisers expect that donors will become more comfortable writing seven-figure cheques. With just weeks to the first America's Cup World Series event in Cascais, Portugal, there are no sponsors other than long time supporter Louis Vuitton, and entry fees for teams have been slashed to get some teams on the start line for the opening round of the upstart series. According to the [San Francisco] Examiner: Some $12 million is budgeted in the coming fiscal year for the Mayor's Office of Economic and Workforce Development to conduct environmental planning and get necessary state and federal permits. We plan to do a training weekend on the 25-26 of June, the Cowes Dinard-St Malo race (8-9-10 July) and the RORC Channel Race (30-31 July) as our qualifiers before the August 14th start date of the Fastnet race. This amount includes all food on board when racing, race fees, mooring fees, the training weekend, and St Malo race/return, the Channel Race, comprising in total around 10 days at sea.
