Sail for Gold This year's Skandia Sail for Gold regatta is almost as big as the Olympics, according to triple gold medal legend Ben Ainslie. The reason is that many national teams are using the event as a crucial component of their selection process. So anticipation was high this morning when the sailors arrived at the Olympic centre, but the wind had other ideas, toying with the race officials as they tried to set fair race course in the light and shifty conditions. The Match Racing got started on time, others were not so lucky with the Laser Radial's waiting ashore until 17:00 before being sent afloat.

But while the Women's Match Racing might have got started on time, it was still going when almost everything else was done. The usual names found their way to the top of the round robin, with stand-out unbeaten performances from Claire Leroy, Elodie Bertrand and Marie Riou (FRA); Anne-claire Le Berre, Alice Ponsar and Myrtille Ponge (FRA); and Silja Lehtinen, Silja Kanerva and Mikaela Wulff (FIN) all on 3-0, and Lucy Macgregor, Annie Lush and Kate Macgregor (GBR); and Anna Tunnicliffe, Molly Vendemoer and Debbie Capozzi (USA) on the slightly more impressive 4-0.

* It was a great day 1 for Team Maclaren at the 2011 Skandia Sail for Gold regatta. We had four very good races and came out ahead on all of them to end the day with a 4-0 record. The breeze was steady in direction with small puffs ranging from 8-11kts.

After a slow start due to lack of wind in the morning for the earlier groups, our group finally started to race around 4pm in the best breeze of the day. The wind filled from the SW, blowing over the sea wall. Racing got underway quite quickly once we were all in the boats. The conditions were such that the wind and water were steady enough that no major gains or losses could be made due to windshifts or errant waves. All the races were close and finishes were within two boat lengths. The key was to get a good start and then control the race from there. We finally finished our last race at 7pm and after a tow-in and changing, arrived home around 8:15pm.

Our team has made some small goals for ourselves throughout the regatta. Today we were able to accomplish some of those goals, as well as adding new experiences/situations to our knowledge base. Tomorrow we will race the final three races in the round robin. -- Anna Tunnicliffe

10th Azores and Back Yacht Race
Blue skies, fair winds and calm seas greeted the fifty eight boats taking the start for this the tenth edition of the Royal Cornwall's AZAB; Azores and back race on Saturday 4th June 2011.

Guest of honour and co founder Andrew Bray, editor of both Yachting World and Yachting Monthly in the past, made a welcome return to Falmouth for the start, gazing down from the vantage point of Pendennis Castle to the fleet assembled along the start line to Black Rock he must have swelled with pride at the enduring popularity of this race that has grown to be a classic in the UK shorthanded racing calendar since that first race in 1975.

This race does what it says on the tin; open ocean from the Lizard to the island of St Miguel, 1200 miles of relatively safe adventure and serious racing, for many of the sailors their first taste of the wide open expanse of North Atlantic with big swell waves, steady breezes, and deep blue ocean. They will have the chance to experience a proper watch system once the ship gets organised, happy hours perhaps, dolphin torpedoes at night , whales heavy breathing in the calms, pink and deadly Portuguese man of war, fleets of tiny 'by the wind sailors', the green flash, it's all there to savour on AZAB.

They have proper cannon at the Royal Cornwall, not a pop gun, and the eight inch bore civil war muzzle loader added dramatic sound and smoke effect for the big crowd gathered at the Castle to witness the excitement of the four class starts. First away were the fast boats in class 4 at 13.00. The wind, forecast to be 12 knots from the north east, flipped around at the ten minute gun as the sea breeze set in and confounded a lot of skippers who had their spinnaker gear set up, but all the boats got away for a clean start under white sails in a light south westerly, class one sedately ending the show at 13.30. -- Jerry Freeman

Top three, IRC Overall at press time:

1. Taika, Chris Tibbs / Don Wright
2. La Promese, JanKees Lampe / not listed
3. Jbellino, Rob Craigie / Charles Allen

Timoneer Triumphs at the Dubois Cup 2011
Photo by Rick Tomlinson / Dubois. Click on image to enlarge.

Dubois Cup Porto Cervo, Italy: Another edition of the Dubois Cup closed with the victory of the 44.8-metre ketch Timoneer. Organized by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda from 4th to 6th June, the Dubois Cup 2011 saw nine sailing superyachts competing and a spectator fleet of sail and motor yachts bringing the total stable of Dubois-designed vessels lining the quays of Porto Cervo Marina to 14. Andrew Cook's 30-metre Nostromo took second place in the overall classification ahead of Salvatore Trifiro's 49.7-metre fast cruising sloop Zefira.

Racing got under way on schedule today and the fleet were set a 17 nautical mile course which took them up along the coast of north-east Sardinia, through the strait between Capo Ferro and the Isole delle Bisce islet before an upwind beat to Monaci island and a downwind run to the finish line off Porto Cervo. Northerly breezes of approximately 7 to 8 knots accompanied the fleet at the starting line but began to die out towards the end of the race. The 2010-launched Zefira was the fastest yacht around the course but Timoneer's handicap rating allowed her to claim overall victory.

As with every edition of the Dubois Cup, Ed Dubois, founder and CEO of Dubois Naval Architects, made a very personal appeal to support research into childhood illness. The Dubois Child Cancer Fund has recently been set up to fund specific research into the childhood cancer Neuroblastoma and the regatta served as a platform to launch the initiative. New for this edition was also the commitment of Dubois Naval Architects and Dubois Yachts Ltd to balancing the event's carbon footprint, making this one of the first superyacht events to do so.

The Yacht Club Costa Smeralda's 2011 sporting calendar continues with the Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta taking place from tomorrow, Tuesday 7th June until Saturday 11th June.

NACRA Infusion Worlds 2011 Attracts World Class Sailors
Larsen/Van Leeuwen, winners of the 2010 Nacra Infusion Championship. Photo by Claire Matches, www.clairematches.com. Click on image to enlarge.

NACRA Infusion Scheveningen, Netherlands: The first Zwitserleven World Championship Nacra Infusion 2011, to be sailed along the Dutch Wadden island of Texel, attracts world class sailors. Since November 2010, the Nacra Infusion is recognized by the International Sailing Federation (ISAF). Therefore, the class may now officially organize a World Championship. The Nacra carbon 20 and the Open Class have no ISAF status, so they compete at the Int. Nacra Open Championships 2011. Currently, the total fleet includes 41 teams, representing seven countries. The three-day event begins on Monday, June 20 and is part of the Zwitserleven Sailing Week 2011.

There are a total of ten races on the program, led by race director Rob Hoogstra (NED). On Monday and Tuesday, the sailors race four times and twice on Wednesday morning. The level is again high. In the Nacra Infusion class, all eyes are focused on the winner of the Int. Nacra Infusion Championship 2010, Gunnar Larsen (NED). Now he appears with his new crew, Sam Frank (NED) at the start. In May, this Boskalis duo won the Dutch Nacra Infusion Championship. A few weeks earlier, Larsen and Frank took the bronze medal at Eurocat Carnac in France, the first international showdown of the season.

The F18 World Champions 2009, Coen de Koning (NED, also world's best in 2008) and Thijs Visser (NED), are for sure hunting for another world title. Former Olympian and current America's Cup sailor Pim Nieuwenhuis (NED) and his crew Ferdinand van West (NED) are among the favorites as well. Like last year's winner in the Nacra carbon 20, Peter Vink (NED) and his crew in their class. They will have a hard time with newcomers Xander Pols (NED) and Sascha Larsen (NED). Pols took twice the line-honors of the Zwitserleven Round Texel Race on his former M20. A few years earlier, Larsen was first through the finish of world's biggest cat race.

MCL Transboat MCL Transboat negotiated the narrow lanes of Lymington, on Britain's south coast, to deliver the Class40 ex-Desafio Cabo de Hornos to hugely successful father and son team; Ross and Campbell Field. Ross is an outstanding sailor and a Whitbread Winner while Campbell is a proven navigator and shore manager in his own right. Following a five-week journey as deck cargo from Chile, the pair's Class40 was carefully manoeuvred down winding streets on an 18 metre (60ft) truck for delivery to the boatyard. MCL Transboat has eighteen purpose-built boat trailers, including a 35 metre (115ft), 80 ton trailer, the largest ever designed for the movement of all types of craft by road.

Howie's Mark Foy Trophy Challenge
Photo by Frank Quealey. Click on image to enlarge.

Mark Foy Trophy U.S. champion Howie Hamlin has won every available International 18ft Skiff championship with the exception of just one - the Mark Foy Trophy.

Now the American is determined to add that trophy to his already impressive international record (which extends beyond the 18 Footers) with a strong challenge for the 2011 Mark Foy Trophy to be sailed at Sonderborg, Denmark from 6-11 June.

Howie is a numerous winner of the U.S. Championship and six times winner of the San Francisco International Championship. He has also won four European Championships, but undoubtedly his greatest achievement in the 18s has been his back-to-back wins in the 2002 and 2003 Giltinan Championships with GE-US Challenge on Sydney Harbour.

Ever the perfectionist, Howie is planning an all out attack on the Mark Foy Trophy with a totally new team. Joining him in CST Composites will be Australian Scott Babbage and Matt McKinlay from the U.S.

Babbage is very experienced in 18 Footers, having sailed for a number of seasons with John Harris in Rag & Famish Hotel before moving over to Gotta Love It 7 (2010-2011) with Seve Jarvin and Sam Newton to win the 2011 Giltinan Championship. He is an extremely talented and versatile sailor who also finished third in this year's World Moth Championship.

Third member of the CST Composites team is Matt McKinlay, who is a relative newcomer to the 18s in the U.S. Matt gained experience earlier this year when he teamed with Skip McCormack and Jody McCormack at the 2011 Giltinan. Sailing with two experienced pros on CST will be a massive boost to his knowledge. -- Frank Quealey, Australian 18 Footers League

Bembridge Sailing Club 125th Anniversary Regatta
Click on image for photo gallery.

Bembridge Sailing Club 125th Anniversary Regatta With 2 weeks to go, fleets across the South Coast are preparing to come 'home' to help celebrate Bembridge Sailing Club's 125th anniversary on the 17-19 June. The XOD, Swallow, Sunbeam, Daring, Victory, Mermaid, Squib, Bembridge Redwing, Bembridge One Design, Solent Scow, Seaview Dinghy, Illusion and Swan classes have all bee invited as they have strong historical links to Bembridge..

The Bembridge Sailing Club was formed in 1886 to provide Corinthian sailing racing as an alternative or supplement to playing golf at the Royal Isle of Wight Golf Club that was active on the St. Helens Duver at that time. The original club house erected in 1896 still stands and is supported by a new western end completed in time for the Queen's Jubilee in 2001.

The regatta will include a Friday passage race, two races per class on the Saturday and further racing or passage home on Sunday. The 'Jump Up', Saturday evening's informal celebration, welcomed by Mount Gay Rum, will feature the fabulous music of Derek Sandy and his reggae band, which will be opening the Isle of Wight Festival in 2011, and supported by Irish Dave band.

The Bembridge One Design was introduced in 1936; yet another Westmacott and Woodnutts classic. The design was based on the very successful XOD, but with three inches less draught for the shallow approaches of Bembridge Harbour and no spinnaker.

The Bembridge Redwing Class originated in 1897 with a design by Charles Nicholson. This was replaced in 1938 by a new Charles Nicholson design and the fleet size was limited to 20 boats. In 1989 David Cannel adapted the 1938 design into a GRP hull to compete on equal terms with the wooden boats. Thirteen wooden boats were sold to a syndicate in Poole harbour, and the Bembridge fleet expanded to thirty five boats.

Tactick J/80 Uk National Championship
Photo by Tim Wright, www.photocation.com. Click on image for photo gallery.

Tactick J/80 Uk National Championship Racing at The Tactick J/80 UK National Championship 2011 in association with Baltic Wharf which is being hosted by the Royal Dart Yacht Club is due to commence on Wednesday 8th of June and as boats and crews arrive at Darthaven Marina, the excitement is growing within the 26 boat fleet. The list of runners and riders is extremely impressive and it includes many newcomers to the J/80 Class along with some old faces returning to the fleet after some time out. Suffice it to say that everyone is keen to get out racing on the same patch of water where the J/80 World Championships will be held in 2012.

Alongside all of the new and unknown entities racing at the Nationals there is a plethora of established J/80 talent to chase around the race-track as well.

Local boat Baltic Wharf, skippered by one of the youngest competitors at the event, Henry Bomby has shown form before and one would certainly expect this talented young crew to finish somewhere up in the chocolates. Nigel Banford (Dartmouth's J/80 Class Captain) has worked tirelessly to put this event together and he will be racing Just So.

Spitfire, raced by the RAF team, Tony Hanlon and Andy 'Rodders' Rodwell have been super quick on the Solent in recent months and with the legendary Ian Southworth on board to call the shots, they are clearly serious contenders. They will be missing their front-man though: Simon 'Sling' Ling is part way through a tour in Afghanistan.

Stewart Hawthorn comes back to the J/80 fleet after some time away and he is always fast in Jumpin Jenga. For the Nationals, Stewart has tactician Duncan McDonald joining his crew, fresh from his win at the J/109 Nationals which took place last week. Also back after some time away are Rob Larke and his co-owner Nic Barnes, sailing their new rocket-ship J2X. They've been quick before and expectations are high for a strong performance this week.
