Contributions welcome, send to AC45 Selected for America's Cup World Series Using the AC45 in all AC World Series events instead of switching to the AC72 in season two was one of several changes voted on by America's Cup competitors on Tuesday. This move also provides teams with another opportunity to manage competition costs. The larger AC72 will now appear on the water from July 2012. Teams will work up their AC72's and race the AC World Series leading into the Louis Vuitton Cup, America's Cup Challenger Series, and the 34th America's Cup Finals in San Francisco. The extended time-period for the debut of the AC72 allows teams more time for development of the boat. The race format and scoring for the 2011 AC World Series have also been released. The format will include a combination of Fleet and Match Racing with winners for each as well as an overall winner that will be determined on the final Sunday of the regatta. The AC World Series starts August 6, 2011 in Cascais, Portugal. Other updates agreed by the Competitors today include:'; - Teams to launch AC72s starting July 1, 2012 (there is a limited exception to launch and sail earlier for any proven pre-existing contractual obligations) A press conference will be held in San Francisco on June 15 to introduce the teams and discuss the updated program for the 34th America's Cup. * Over the weekend, the America's Cup Event Authority and the other bodies responsible for the event made significant changes to the schedule and the pricing of the next edition. In December, America's Cup organisers slashed the price of entry for the next edition to lure teams to the event. The original entry fee was set at USD $1.3million which was reduced to USD $100,000. The Performance Bonds were cut from USD $3million to USD $1million. Now the (first?) performance bond has been eliminated altogether, but teams must purchase an AC45 for 650,000 Euro. - The AC45 purchase contract (with 50% non-refundable deposit) has to be signed by June 10. It's important that the organisers ensure that teams have the funding to be competitive for the next edition of the cup, but that has to be weighed against the prospect of an event where only a couple of boats show up – which would have a big impact on the spectacle and the markets in which the TV rights can be sold. The compulsory purchase of an AC45 by June 10 is important for the promoters of the first World Series event to be staged in August. There is no doubt that the boats can provide a great event package. The Extreme Sailing Series has shown that their format is exciting and provides a challenge for the best sailors in the world. Now it seems, the America's Cup World Series will be a copycat version of the Extreme Series, with the only real differentiator being a wing-sail and the America's Cup 'brand'. The first event will be held in Cascais in August. Supporters of the race say that 5 star hotels are booked out all the way to Lisbon as a result, but a quick search of popular travel websites shows that not to be the case. Lisbon, Estoril and Cascais are expected to benefit from tensions in North Africa, which means that the America's Cup World Series event might also benefit from a slightly higher number of people in the region, but it would be a stretch to say that the cup event is the reason for any influx over and above the media entourage. -- David Fuller in YachtSponsorship.com: Platu 25 Worlds
It was a disappointing day at the Platu 25 Worlds, as the sailors and the organizers alike waited in vain, under a grey and overcast sky, but no races could be sailed. The Race Committee even sent the boats out on the water, in the hope of finding some breeze on a different area of Lake Traunsee, but had no luck and finally decided to call it a day for the 46 teams competing. The overall results are then unchanged. The forecast is such that at least one French boat, the giant three-masted 60-ft Lugger, La Cancalaise, an impressive three-masted vessel measuring 60-ft overall, is making plans to cross the Channel in time to arrive at Looe Bay in South East Cornwall on Friday evening. The regatta could attract as many as 40 of these boats with their huge and colourful canvas sails, as well a host of other smaller Luggers from all over the UK - including a healthy contingent of boats which regular race out of Beer in East Devon. 'Without events like this, and the devotion of the people who now own these aging craft, many of the old fishing boats would be left to rot away, taking with them such a vital piece of irreplaceable maritime history,' says chairman of the Cornish Lugger Association Paul Greenwood. The regatta is again backed by Mike Cotton's Hillcrest House and Nursing Home and supported by all of the town's authorities; a host of local businesses and many individuals, too. 'We are fortunate so many of the local authorities and businesses get behind us,' said Greenwood. 'But we never take their support for granted.' Regarding the completion of Esimit Europa's crew, project founder Igor Simčič stated: "Europe needs more than symbols. More details on www.kieler-woche.de Designer Greg Elliott on the Eviction of the Olympic Keelboat In 2016 While he has more than a few queries over what is happening within the ISAF and the direction of the sport, Elliott says his main focus is on the 2012 Olympics, in which his design will compete, and says that it will be as perfect as he can make it. Elliott's designs have formed the basis of many club youth fleets of which the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron's is probably the most significant and successful. With the ISAF's Olympic Commission advocating a more egalitarian approach to the Event and Equipment options, one would have though that the use of club provided fleets, and supplied equipment would have been a way to both grow the sport in developing countries, and reduce the cost of Olympic competition. In an interview with Richard Gladwell, Elliott explains how this can be achieved, and gives his thoughts on some other areas of the sport such as the America's Cup. We are getting a crew together to enter the biggest ever fully crewed event for Class 40s and it will be a blast! There are 29 Class 40 boats on the entry list so the start at the Royal Yacht Squadron in Cowes will be an impressive show, and with a total of 350 entries this is set to be the biggest ever offshore race taking place in UK waters. Mowgli is a powerful and fast boat: she has already raced around the world; we were second in the Round Britain and Irealand last year by just four minutes having won three of the legs; and I sailed her solo in the Route du Rhum last November. We carry three big asymmetric spinnakers, from 185 sqm to 95 sqm and we can reach speeds can be in excess of 20 knots in a breeze.
