AC45 Selected for America's Cup World Series
With the newest generation of America's Cup boats exceeding the expectations of event organizers and the teams, the AC45 wing-sailed catamaran has now been selected by competitors for use in all America's Cup World Series events.

Using the AC45 in all AC World Series events instead of switching to the AC72 in season two was one of several changes voted on by America's Cup competitors on Tuesday. This move also provides teams with another opportunity to manage competition costs.

The larger AC72 will now appear on the water from July 2012. Teams will work up their AC72's and race the AC World Series leading into the Louis Vuitton Cup, America's Cup Challenger Series, and the 34th America's Cup Finals in San Francisco. The extended time-period for the debut of the AC72 allows teams more time for development of the boat.

The race format and scoring for the 2011 AC World Series have also been released. The format will include a combination of Fleet and Match Racing with winners for each as well as an overall winner that will be determined on the final Sunday of the regatta. The AC World Series starts August 6, 2011 in Cascais, Portugal.

Other updates agreed by the Competitors today include:';

- Teams to launch AC72s starting July 1, 2012 (there is a limited exception to launch and sail earlier for any proven pre-existing contractual obligations)
- Teams have the same limited number of testing days in the AC72s in advance of racing
- The first Performance Bond for the AC World Series is eliminated and replaced with an Entry Fee ($100,000 USD)
- Updated late entry procedure – Teams can enter late at discretion of the Defender
- Competitors must sign an AC45 purchase contract with a 50 percent non-refundable deposit paid by June 10
- Teams will consolidate their websites into www.americascup.com by July 1, 2011.

A press conference will be held in San Francisco on June 15 to introduce the teams and discuss the updated program for the 34th America's Cup.

americascup.com

* Over the weekend, the America's Cup Event Authority and the other bodies responsible for the event made significant changes to the schedule and the pricing of the next edition.

In December, America's Cup organisers slashed the price of entry for the next edition to lure teams to the event. The original entry fee was set at USD $1.3million which was reduced to USD $100,000. The Performance Bonds were cut from USD $3million to USD $1million. Now the (first?) performance bond has been eliminated altogether, but teams must purchase an AC45 for 650,000 Euro.

- The AC45 purchase contract (with 50% non-refundable deposit) has to be signed by June 10.
- The entry fee of USD $100,000 is still payable.
- Another performance bond of $800,000 is payable in December 2011.

It's important that the organisers ensure that teams have the funding to be competitive for the next edition of the cup, but that has to be weighed against the prospect of an event where only a couple of boats show up – which would have a big impact on the spectacle and the markets in which the TV rights can be sold.

The compulsory purchase of an AC45 by June 10 is important for the promoters of the first World Series event to be staged in August.

There is no doubt that the boats can provide a great event package. The Extreme Sailing Series has shown that their format is exciting and provides a challenge for the best sailors in the world. Now it seems, the America's Cup World Series will be a copycat version of the Extreme Series, with the only real differentiator being a wing-sail and the America's Cup 'brand'.

The first event will be held in Cascais in August. Supporters of the race say that 5 star hotels are booked out all the way to Lisbon as a result, but a quick search of popular travel websites shows that not to be the case. Lisbon, Estoril and Cascais are expected to benefit from tensions in North Africa, which means that the America's Cup World Series event might also benefit from a slightly higher number of people in the region, but it would be a stretch to say that the cup event is the reason for any influx over and above the media entourage. -- David Fuller in YachtSponsorship.com:

Platu 25 Worlds Gmunden, Austria: The race organizers tried their best, waiting for several hours and trying to find even the lightest breeze, but a total lack of wind forced them to give up. No racing today, the scoreboard remains unchanged.

It was a disappointing day at the Platu 25 Worlds, as the sailors and the organizers alike waited in vain, under a grey and overcast sky, but no races could be sailed. The Race Committee even sent the boats out on the water, in the hope of finding some breeze on a different area of Lake Traunsee, but had no luck and finally decided to call it a day for the 46 teams competing. The overall results are then unchanged.

Crew Fuel - Energy Before Sailing
Crew Fuel Does this sound familiar? It is 24 hours before your big event and you are busy preparing the boat for racing. The pressure is on, the sun is out and you haven't planned your food or drinks for the day. You spend the whole day and into the evening working hard but totally ignoring your bodies hunger for energy and hydration stores for the racing ahead.

The following morning you manage a quick breakfast before heading on the water and asking your body to perform at maximum intensity levels in 20 knots for the whole day or longer. Your energy levels crash and you are dehydrated leading to declined concentration and poor results.

Don't worry, you are not alone, this is a familiar problem for many sailors, and one we want to help you address.

Crew Fuel Hi Energy Meal helps to build and maintain energy levels with a quick and easy to mix drink with slow release Carbohydrates and key nutrients. Perfect for building your energy levels before racing.

Nutritional planning is vital and Crew Fuel provide energy and hydration solutions on and off the water.

Regatta Turns Back The Clock

Luggers The weather is set fair for this weekend's reunion of traditional wooden, Cornish-built fishing boats, which in centuries gone by would have worked the English Channel fishing grounds each day under sail.

The forecast is such that at least one French boat, the giant three-masted 60-ft Lugger, La Cancalaise, an impressive three-masted vessel measuring 60-ft overall, is making plans to cross the Channel in time to arrive at Looe Bay in South East Cornwall on Friday evening.

The regatta could attract as many as 40 of these boats with their huge and colourful canvas sails, as well a host of other smaller Luggers from all over the UK - including a healthy contingent of boats which regular race out of Beer in East Devon.

'Without events like this, and the devotion of the people who now own these aging craft, many of the old fishing boats would be left to rot away, taking with them such a vital piece of irreplaceable maritime history,' says chairman of the Cornish Lugger Association Paul Greenwood.

The regatta is again backed by Mike Cotton's Hillcrest House and Nursing Home and supported by all of the town's authorities; a host of local businesses and many individuals, too. 'We are fortunate so many of the local authorities and businesses get behind us,' said Greenwood. 'But we never take their support for granted.'

Sidney Gavignet Joins Esimit Europa 2
Gorizia, Italy: Sidney Gavignet, extraordinary sailor from France with an impressive carnet of victories at the world's best regattas, is to join Esimit Europa 2. After the announcements regarding Juan Vila, from Spain, and Jochen Schumann, from Germany, Sidney is the third big sailing star to join the European sport project this year.

The first European sport team will be officially presented in Monte Carlo, Principality of Monaco, on 11th June, in event hosted by the Yacht Club de Monaco and their President, HSH the Prince of Monaco Albert II. The event will be attended by several endorsers of the project, which enjoys the support of many European politicians, as well as of CEOs of important Europe's businesses. Regarding the completion of Esimit Europa's crew, project founder Igor Simčič stated: "Europe needs more than symbols. Today more than ever, Europe needs concrete actions, especially in the field of economic cooperation. This is what we want to show with our project: that we must not be afraid of cooperating and supporting each other, because, in the long run, that's the winning card to play. I feel very lucky that we managed to gather the right people to make this happen. Sidney is definitely one of us".

Esimit Europa 2 is one of the fastest and technologically most advanced sailing yachts in the world. The 30-meters long maxi sails under the patronage of Mr. José Manuel Barroso, president of the European Commission, and is sponsored by Gazprom. In its first season in 2010, the yacht won all the attended regattas and scored 11 consecutive race victories, providing 11 occasions for Europeans to cheer for their continent.

Sailing Guide For Svalbard
Sailing Guide For Svalbard If you want to sail in the high latitudes some day, then the new book Sail to Svalbard could be the first step in the right direction. It is the most comprehensive sailing guide for the Svalbard archipelago, with descriptions of 96 anchorages and harbours. The guide also takes you through the preparations, planning, equipment and how to apply for the permits.

- We circumnavigated Spitsbergen, the biggest island on Svalbard, last year and it was an adventure that had it all: Remoteness, ice, Polar Bears, total silence, scary moments and interesting people, says Jon Amtrup, author of the book.

The preparations, research, fitting out of the boat, acquiring permits and planning for such an adventure is extensive and the book Sail to Svalbard takes you through the paces. It also has the most comprehensive harbour guide for the area. It describes 96 anchorages and harbours on the islands thoroughly.

- Svalbard is the high latitude area that is most easily reached. Tromso to Svalbard on your own keel will take 3-4 days, and put you right among icebergs, glaciers, polar bears and stunning wildlife, says Amtrup.

- Sail to Svalbard is the first and only cruising and harbour guide that focuses on the arctic area. Last season some 80 yachts came to Longyearbyen, the "capital" of Svalbard, and the number is rising fast.

- The climate is changing and the number of visitors increases with every year. If you have a dream of visiting the Svalbard wilderness I recommend that you start setting a date and begin making your plans. It will be worth it. You might even catch the polar bug, says Jon Amtrup.

Designer Greg Elliott on the Eviction of the Olympic Keelboat In 2016
Greg Elliott, designer of the Womens Olympic Keelboat, is understandably not pleased with the decision by the International Sailing Federation to drop the Womens (and Mens) Keelboats from the 2016 Olympics in Brazil. He is even more surprised that a boat and event into which so much effort has been dropped before even sailing in the Olympics.

While he has more than a few queries over what is happening within the ISAF and the direction of the sport, Elliott says his main focus is on the 2012 Olympics, in which his design will compete, and says that it will be as perfect as he can make it.

Elliott's designs have formed the basis of many club youth fleets of which the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron's is probably the most significant and successful.

With the ISAF's Olympic Commission advocating a more egalitarian approach to the Event and Equipment options, one would have though that the use of club provided fleets, and supplied equipment would have been a way to both grow the sport in developing countries, and reduce the cost of Olympic competition.

In an interview with Richard Gladwell, Elliott explains how this can be achieved, and gives his thoughts on some other areas of the sport such as the America's Cup.

* From Marco Nannini: Would you like to join Paul Peggs and I on my  Class 40 yacht for the Fastnet race? We are getting a crew together to enter the biggest ever fully crewed event for Class 40s and it will be a blast!

There are 29 Class 40  boats on the  entry list so the start at the Royal Yacht Squadron in Cowes will be an impressive show, and with a total of 350 entries this is set to be the biggest ever offshore race taking place in UK waters.

Mowgli is a powerful and fast boat: she has  already raced around the world; we were second in the Round Britain and Irealand last year by just four  minutes having won three of the legs; and I sailed her solo in the Route du Rhum last November.

We carry three big asymmetric spinnakers, from 185 sqm to 95 sqm  and we can reach speeds can be in excess of 20 knots in a breeze.

The boat has a new carbon mast fitted this year in Lorient and we completed the 180° inversion test for the Global Ocean Race.

You would be a fully functioning member of the race crew, steering and  trimming in a two watch system of three people each ,so there is plenty to do when you're not catching up on sleep!

We expect the race to take between 3 and 4 days finishing in Plymouth.

We plan to do the Cowes Dinard-St Malo race and the RORC Channel Race as our qualifiers as well as train for one weekend before the August 14th start date of the Fastnet race. The cost for the berth is £2950. This amount includes all food on board when racing, race fees, mooring fees,  the training weekend and St Malo race/return, comprising in total around 10 days at sea.

I am confident that this unique opportunity will be the highlight of your racing season.

Please contact me on 07866368248 or for more details.

* From Ewan McEwan: The current situation is that the jury has confirmed receipt of a request from Team Extreme to reopen a  redress hearing conducted during Act 3, Istanbul, TUR. The jury will inform the parties of it's decision on this request after due consideration. Any enquiries regarding this matter may be made to

Featured Brokerage
Featured Brokerage Boat 2006 Wally Yachts 80. EUR 3,900,000. Located In La Spezia, Italy.

Tango is the first Wally 80 to feature the flush deck and fixed keel combination.

She is very bit as black and distinctive as the late Gianni Agnelli's maxi-racer Stealth; a colour that extends to Tango's carbon fibre winch package, sails and crew gear.

Tango shares a unique Wally styling feature in having teak decking that extend over the curved contour of her coachroof. With three fore and aft tinted window strips - instead of one - her coachroof is unique among all the Wally 80s. This additional feature allows more natural light to flood into the saloon below than you would normally expect on a flush deck sailing yacht.
