Light Winds Frustrate Competitors, Organisers and Postpone Schedule
Today's lone match began in winds between 8 and 10 knots from the north, but the velocity dropped to between 4 and 5 knots at the finish of the short, 5.2-nautical-mile race.
"We were hoping to get more racing completed but there just wasn't enough velocity," said Principal Race Officer Peter Reggio. "The direction was consistent enough from the east, but the strength was between 3 and 5 knots. The boats might've been able to sail upwind in that, but they'd never make it downwind in the sloppy seaway."
Reggio stressed the importance of having steady conditions because of the nature of the semi finals. The first crew to score 2 points wins each series.
"We don't want these series becoming sudden death," Reggio said.
The postponement also affected the Knockout Round matches for 5th through 8th places. The pairings - BMW Oracle Racing versus TFS - PagesJaunes and Artemis against All4One - are setback a day.
For Friday the first warning signal has been moved up a half hour to 0830 CET. The race committee plans to start the BMW Oracle-TFS - PagesJaunes match first, followed by Emirates Team New Zealand-Synergy Russia Sailing Team and then Artemis-All4One. Additional racing is planned but will be dependent on the weather.
Semi Final standings
* Only one race was completed today and that was a semi final match between Azzurra and Origin. The Italians continue to sail well beat the Brits by over a minute to take a 1-0 lead in their best of three series.
No other racing took place. We have struggled here a bit with the wind but it is the end on November in the northern hemisphere.
We are first up tomorrow with a 0830 start which means 0730 dock out. We race All4One in a one race knock out. The winner of our race will race the winner of BMW Oracle-French Spirit for 5th place.
We had a few meetings today one of which was the shareholders of the World Sailing Teams Association. We had a very good meeting that included planning for next year. The Auckland event in March and Sardinia event in May were confirmed. We are working on two more and they will be confirmed by the end of the year. -- Paul Cayard, cayardsailing.com
In accepting en bloc the recommendations of a panel of sailing rules experts, she decreed that Alinghi's state of the art catamaran will have to meet measurement rules limiting its length to 90 feet when it is fully kitted for racing, including the addition of water ballast.
Alinghi had argued that it could be measured in its lightest state.
Alinghi's lawyers has earlier argued that the challenger yacht, in contrast, should be measured in full racing trim. Alinghi will now have to ensure that its yacht meets the terms set down by the judge in time to line up against the American challenger, Larry Ellison's BMW Oracle, on February 8.
It also seems increasingly likely that both sides are being corralled into the event being staged in Valencia as, although Alinghi still has an appeal against the denial of its United Arab Emirate of Ras al Khaimah, both sides have agreed on the Spanish venue for the last Cup being the default position. -- Stuart Alexander in The Independent, www.independent.co.uk/sport/

The New York Supreme Court has moved the 33rd America's Cup match another significant step closer to be being sailed under the normal, fair rules of sailing.
Justice Shirley Kornreich has adopted the unanimous recommendations made by the Expert Panel which took testimony from both Golden Gate Yacht Club and the defending Société Nautique de Geneve in New York on November 7, 2009.
"This is victory for fair rules and common sense," said Tom Ehman, GGYC spokesperson. "Once again SNG's attempts to bias the rules in their favor have been rejected."
The court's ruling that both yachts must be measured with all ballast aboard, including moveable ballast, blocks Alinghi's attempt to circumvent the 90ft Length on Load Waterline (LWL) limit imposed by the America's Cup Deed of Gift.
It was because of SNG's refusal to put an International Jury in place to determine some of the sporting and technical issues that the Court called for its own Expert Panel of former America's Cup jurors.
David Tillett (AUS), Graham McKenzie (NZL) and Bryan Willis (GBR) were "well qualified and independent," the Court said in today's ruling.
The Court also put a time limit on this vital matter of jury appointment, ordering that if is not settled by December 4th, 2009 the Court will ask the Expert Panel to re-convene. "All we have ever asked is that the America's Cup be raced under the normal rules and procedures that nearly every sailor in the world competes under," added Ehman. "Yet again SNG has had to be reminded that the America's Cup is not the Alinghi Cup." -- www.ggyc.com

RYA Seek Interest for 2010 Commodores' Cup
As in 2008, RYA Team GBR will enter four teams in the event, with each team comprising one boat in three specified IRC class Rating bands. In 2010 the RYA is looking to select three teams from the South and one from the North of the UK naming them, Team GBR Red, Blue, White and Black.
It will be possible for teams of three boats to be pre-selected before the end of the trials, but at least one team will be selected having completed the Selection Trials in full. Entries are sought from both ready-made teams of three boats as well as individual boats.

Entrants will also be required to compete in the GBR IRC Championships 25-27 June 2010.

YJA Pantaenius Yachtsman of the Year finalists includes Paul Goodison, World Laser champion, Olympic Gold medal and five times European champion. Paul is the only sailor worldwide to hold all three awards at the same time and was nominated for the ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year Award. Sam Davies, first placed Briton in the Vendee Globe 2008/09. Sam is currently sailing the Transat Jacque Vabre race and was also nominated for the ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year Award. Finally, Ian Williams. Two times World Match Race champion. Ian became the first British National to be crowned Match Racing World champion in the event's 19 year history.
Finalists for the YJA Pantaenius Young Sailor of the Year includes Isobel Hamilton. In April 2009 Isobel was third overall in the RYA Youth National Champions and Trials 09`, securing her a place in the team for the ISAF games. In July she took silver in the ISAF Games in Brazil. One week later in the RS:X Youth Worlds in Turkey she took Gold. Isobel celebrated her 17th birthday in August whilst competing in the IWA Worlds in Portland, taking Gold again. Phil Sparks and Ben Gratton. They won Gold in their 420 on the final day of the 2009 Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championships in Brazil. They also won first place in the Kiel Week regatta and third place in the 420 Class Worlds at Lake Garda. Finally, Aaron Lowther and Steve Curtis. Both have won their age groups 13 to 16 years olds and 8 to 12 year olds respectively for the second year running in the Honda RYA Youth RIB Championship.
Winners of both awards will be voted for by the Yachting Journalists' Association. The YJA Pantaenius Yachtsman of the Year will be announced at an awards ceremony on Tuesday 12th January 2010 at Trinity House, Tower Hill, London.

It has been a race of highs and lows for Alex and Ross, whose Transat Jacques Vabre came to a premature end this week after a collision with an object in the water.
At approximately 1820 GMT on Sunday (15/11/09) HUGO BOSS crew Alex Thomson and Ross Daniel, reported a collision with an unidentified object in the water. HUGO BOSS was lying in 4th place when the damage was sustained and it was reported that they were taking on water. A pump worked overnight and the crew confirmed that they were managing the ingress of water. At 1300 GMT on Monday Alex and Ross made the difficult decision to officially retire from the race.
The shore team will assess the damage and look to affect repairs before the boat is delivered back to Gosport.
Reporting from onboard HUGO BOSS after the retirement, skipper Alex Thomson said.
I am brutally disappointed that somebody's discarded waste has stopped our race. If the hull had not been breeched or if we could stop the water ingress we could carry on no problem and I felt confident we would have done a good job for the rest of the race. As I said last night we feel like we have done the hard bit, so this is a tough blow for the whole team."
Record Fleet For Sydney-Hobart Qualifier
The race is the Tasmanian qualifying event for Hobart yachts competing in the long ocean races from Sydney, Melbourne and Launceston to Hobart between Christmas and New Year.
The strong fleet underlines the growth of ocean racing in Tasmania which has seen eight yachts from this state enter the Sydney-Hobart race and predictions of 40 to 50 boats in the Launceston-Hobart race.
The 190 nautical mile Maria Island race starts off Hobart's Castray Esplanade at 7pm today, taking the fleet down the River Derwent, across Storm Bay, past Tasman Island and up the East Coast to round Maria Island off Orford before sailing back to Hobart.
The fleet includes five of the eight Tasmanian boats entered for the Sydney-Hobart: Sally Rattle's Archie, David Bean's Auch, David Creese's Dekadence, Todd Leary's She's the Culprit and Tony Lyall's Valheru. -- Peter Campbell in The Mercury, www.themercury.com.au

Favourite Bar: The Byron Darnton. This bar is on the island of Sanda. a mile sw off the Mull of Kintyre. The bar is owned by Dick, an amazing charactor, who can tell you stories about his very interesting life. He bought the island about 10 years ago and set about restoring the many buildings. He has restored the houses and old school, the bothy or bunk house and the old lighthouse keepers cottages that can be rented out. However the bar is something else. Good food and atmosphere. I have sailed there from Bangor, 40 miles, and thoroughly enjoyed the liquid refreshments and great food. Dick welcomes everyone as if they are lost friends. All his customers have to arrive by boat and therefore share a common achievement and the bar talk reflects this. Just google 'Sanda' to appreciate the place.
Favourite Bar: 1. Soggy Dollar, Palapa Marina, St Maarten, WI (Number one by miles)
Always good places to unexpectedly meet old friends, and great locations. I remember when the Soggy Dollar bar was just an Eski, a bench and a table.
Favourite Bar: Hands down: The Candy Store in Newport, Rhode Island. Scene and be seen! Black Pearl was popular but not like the Candy Store - haven't been back in a while so maybe that has surpassed. Harbour Court is amazing but still private as are all the Yacht Club's Bars - The beauty of the Candy Store was bumping into all levels of sailing fame and fun; dancing drinking and planning the future of the sport.
Talent at every level and every type of sailboat; international and national. In the "old days" you could run into Ted Turner, DC or Bruno to your J/24 competitor Kenney Read. Always a bad position to name names but I will be many others can add their name to the list whether one-design, off shore, jury or RC. For sure it has to be one of the top visited by the most sailors from all over the competitive world of sailing.
