Contributions welcome, send to Caffari and Corbella One Day from World Record Achievement Caffari and Corbella onboard GAES Centros Auditivos are expected to cross the Barcelona World Race finish line between 19:00 and 23:00 (BST) on Tuesday 12 April 2011. Dee Caffari, 38, and Anna Corbella, 34, are now approximately 12 hours from the finish line of the Barcelona World Race and setting two new world records. For British sailor, Caffari, this has been her third race around the globe and, upon successful completion, she will become the only woman to have sailed around the planet three times non-stop - more times than any other woman in history. Catalan sailor, Corbella, will also set her own record as the first Spanish woman to circumnavigate the globe non-stop. The GAES girls are approaching the finish line at 8.6 knots and will complete the Barcelona World Race in sixth position. Of the original fleet of fourteen, four retired and seven made technical stops making the all female duo one of the few teams to have completed this race around the globe non-stop. Hours away from the finish line, Caffari commented: "It's a very proud day for me, Anna and our sponsors. Our goal was always to get round the world non-stop and to be as competitive as possible. By finishing in sixth place and stepping back on land for the first time in fourteen weeks in Barcelona means that we will have achieved both. We just can't wait to cross that line now!" * Elsewhere across the fleet, the motivation to get home remains no less strong. One place behind in seventh, Hugo Boss is sailing in lifting north-easterly breezes, which as Wouter Verbraak explained earlier today, they are happy to continue in until they reach the layline for Gibraltar. "It's okay to have the breeze go right now, but in a day and a half when we get close to the layline, when we have to tack to go to Gibraltar, then we want the wind to go left. The weather models indicate that that's going to be the case, and the good thing is that it's still not too bumpy, it's getting a little bit more bumpy but it's not too bad." With Hugo Boss currently some 1,700 miles from the finish, both skippers have their own reasons to wish for a speedy return - Andy Meiklejohn spoke of how his pregnant wife will look rather different to when he left Barcelona three months ago, and he also has a deadline of getting back in time for his son's birthday, while mountain-sports lover Wouter Verbraak is hoping to get back before the snow melts: "It's the end of the skiing season and I'm desperate to get in the last bit of the season because right before I left I got a brand new pair of skis and I haven't been able to use them all winter. So I'm looking forward to testing them on the slopes when I get back." "A little fellow by the name of Zac has his birthday [on Good Friday], that's Andy's little fella, and so we're really racing harder than ever to get home in time for my skiing and his son's birthday." Six hundred miles behind, Forum Maritim Catala are just passing the Cape Verde islands, while ninth placed We Are Water remain within 100 miles off the South American shore, awaiting more solid upwind conditions, but in good spirits. Brindabella To Attempt Round Australia Record Ian today announced that he will be joining forces with one of Australia's most famous ocean racing yachts, the mighty Brindabella, in an attempt to break through 30 days in May 2011. "When I set out to find a boat, the first boat I thought of was Brindabella. She still holds so many race records including the Sydney to Southport/Gold Coast, that once again stood the test of time this year even with the 100ft Wild Oats XI chasing it down. She is an icon in Australian yachting, and a beautifully designed boat that still turns heads today. What better yacht is there than Brindabella to take on this record?" Ian stated. Ian contacted Brindabella's owner Jim Cooney who has spent the last six months carefully restoring her back into the best shape she has been for many years. After tabling the idea and detailed plans, an agreement was made that Jim would join the crew on the journey around Australia. "I had followed Ian's solo journey this year, and applauded him for his efforts in not only smashing the world record but his awareness campaign of the damage plastic bags are doing to our environment. In my University days I worked on a marine research project in the Caribbean, and I saw first hand the disastrous effects plastic bags have on marine life. When Ian contacted me about Brindabella making the record attempt I was immediately excited. Brindabella is now in great shape and to see this classic yacht involved in a good cause with the potential to set the record around Australia would cap off an amazing history.. When Ian raised the idea of the Around Australia record I had no hesitation in joining the attempt, especially seeing him do so well singlehanded." The plan will be similar to Ian's campaign of last year where he will set the boat up and then use the Brisbane to Gladstone race as a warm up. Non sailors or inexperienced sailors need not apply as this will be 30 days of arduous sailing. For both of these events, those ready for a test sail should call or email for an appointment. 207-244-5509 or ISAF Sailing World Cup Standings Dorian van Rijsselberge (NED) and Marina Alabau (ESP) lead the ISAF Sailing World Cup Men's and Women's RS:X Standings after winning gold at the Rolex Miami OCR and Trofeo S.A.R. Princess Sofia MAPFRE. In the Laser, Nick Thompson (GBR) has sailed in all three of the 2010-2011 ISAF Sailing World Cup regattas. He won gold at Sail Melbourne, came fourth at the Rolex Miami OCR and picked up a bronze medal in Palma. He tops the Standings on 55 points to lead. Ben Ainslie (GBR) and Giles Scott (GBR) have been dominating the class with the pair sharing the spoils in all three of the regattas this season. But it is Ainslie who is top at the moment, on 59 points compared to Scott's 57 points. Penny Clark and Katrina Hughes (GBR) have jumped to the top of the Women's 470 Standings after a fourth place finish in Palma. They finished second at the Rolex Miami OCR to give them a cumulative points total of 36. The Men's 470 ISAF Sailing World Cup Standings look a little different with Mathew Belcher and Malcolm Page (AUS), 2009-2010 Men's 470 ISAF Sailing World Cup Champions, on track to claim a second title. Marit Bouwmeester (NED) is yet to win an ISAF Sailing World Cup regatta but she tops the Laser Radial Standings on 49 points. In the Star Standings, Andrew Campbell and Ian Coleman (USA) have closed the gap on leaders Robert Scheidt and Bruno Prada (BRA). The Americans finished sixth in Palma compared to the Brazilians eighth place finish, and they bring the deficit down to just three points. There was no Women's Match Racing at Sail Melbourne so the latest ISAF Sailing World Cup Standings consist of the results from the Rolex Miami OCR and the Trofeo S.A.R. Princess Sofia MAPFRE. Sally Barkow (USA) has jumped into the lead after defeating Silja Lehtinen (FIN) 3-1 in the Final in Palma. She has a one point lead over Anna Tunnicliffe (USA) and Claire Leroy (FRA) who both have 37 points. The ISAF Sailing World Cup now heads to Hyeres, France for the The Semaine Olympique Francaise, the fourth of seven regattas on the ISAF Sailing World Cup series. Porto Cervo to Host the 2011 Audi TP52 World Championship The last time that the TP52 World Championships were hosted on these waters was the 2007 edition, won by Sweden's Torbjorn Tornqvist 's Artemis. Once again the event is expected to attract a high level of sailors including the defending champions Quantum Racing (USA) who won the title in Valencia last year. And for the Audi Azzurra Sailing Team, the crew which together won the 2009 world title in Palma ahead of Quantum Racing, will be racing on home waters under the flag of the host club. The racing will comprise five days of windward-leeward racing including one coastal race. -- Sabina Mollart-Rogerson Northern California Pair Aim to Revolutionize TV Graphics Honey, together with long-time business partner Ken Milnes, is heading a new graphics overlay project that ACEA expects will make the racing easier to understand and comprehend for the mainstream viewer. It will also revolutionize the way the game is umpired. Milnes and Honey aim to project their affinity for innovative sports broadcast enhancements to America's Cup viewers through live video graphics rendered on the water from a helicopter. "I've had two careers up until now, one as an electrical engineer developing navigation, tracking, and TV special effects, and the other as a navigator in professional offshore sailing," said Honey. "Working for ACEA combines my two careers as I will be using both my sailing and technology backgrounds." If they are successful, no longer will a broadcast producer or director have to cut away from a live picture to illustrate the closeness of the yachts with animation. No longer will viewers watch a close-quarters situation in animation. All of the illustrative techniques that made animation so informative will be laid over the live broadcast. The next step will be evident during a dress rehearsal test in Auckland next month as the America's Cup Event Authority try the system out on the AC45 and race committee boats. www.oracleracing.com Dubarry Lahinch - Performance Enhanced Dubarry Lahinch – performance perfected. Bosphorus Cup Celebrating 10th Anniversary The annual IRC regatta on waters of Istanbul will be held again this year between May 19th and May 22nd. On its 10th anniversary, Bosphorus Cup will last for 4 days, featuring a total of 7 races. The spectacular Bosphorus Race will take place on Saturday, May 21st. The event is organized by ORG Sports and sponsored by Garanti Bank Payment Systems. One of the two new big boats, Orient Express VI a Farr 55 owned by Bulent Atabay will be facing opposition from the first Turkish TP 52 Provezza owned by Ergin İmre. Another new boat worth watching will be MAT 1010, another Mark Mills design which will be racing against Archambault 35's and X35's. Integrated Bridge Systems and Integrated Navigation Systems Talk It will also address Integrated Navigation Systems (INS) which bring together information and data from many sources and can form an important part of the Integrated Bridge System. The impact of future positioning systems will be examined. The increasing trend towards approach to a work station approach to electronic displays will be discussed. In addition the opportunity will be taken to explain how leisure craft fitted with AIS Class B are displayed on a modern ship's bridge. The implications of IBS and INS for Captains, Officers of the Watch and Pilots will also be discussed together with their impact on small craft users and how it will affect their interaction with larger vessels. The talk is jointly organised by the Royal Institute of Navigation Southern Branch and the Nautical Institute. The event is free of charge, and open to all comers.. Details on the event: www.rin.org.uk Directions on how to get to the Warsash Maritime Academy: Industry News This year the South Wales Boat Show's dry side will be on the main semi tarmacked car parks in SA1 and this, says Mr Sutcliffe, will be a massive step forward from last year. It will also bring the show much closer to the marina areas. The Royal Navy's HMS Hunworth will be berthed in a new area of the show that's free of charge to all visitors. There will also be a jazz band and other attractions. The show entrance price will be lower too, with family entry back at £15. Five pound Friday was a great success last year and Mr Sutcliffe says it will run again this year. The 6th South Wales Boat Show runs from Friday 17 June to Sunday 19 June 2011 in the Prince of Wales Dock, Swansea. ------------------------------------------- Henri Lloyd have very great pride in their associations with exceptional individuals and are delighted to announce their continued support of Yachtsman of the Year, Geoff Holt. Building on their existing relationship with the quadriplegic sailor, Henri Lloyd has entered into a Performance Clothing Partnership with Holt which will continue throughout 2011. Holt will be wearing a range of technical clothing including the Atmosphere 3 base layer, Eco fleece mid-layer and the Octane wind-stopper jacket. As a result of his disability, he is unable to control his body temperature so it is vital he remains warm and dry at all times, but without overheating which can be as dangerous as getting too cold. Holt used a similar three-layer system to great effect for his record-breaking, 109 day circumnavigation of Great Britain in 2007. His sailing plans for 2011 are many and varied, from racing in the Solent to cruising in the Caribbean. James Powell, owner of Yachtmail made the presentation to Sir Alan Massey, Chief Executive Officer of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency and Stuart Arundel, National Chairman of the Coastguard Association. Yachtmail, a long-time supporter of the Coastguard Association were proud to present the cheque to the CGA, as part of their ongoing campaign to promote safety locally to Lymington, as well as along our busy stretch of coastline. Further support came from the second, recently opened Yachmail 'mega-store' at Swanwick at the Hamble River Boat Yard. "Sometimes I think the Coastguard is overlooked. Locally it is a vital emergency service as we have vast proportion of boat owners coming and going in the Solent waters. It is always good to help support a charity you really believe in and we are all pleased with the sum accumulated." commented James. ISAF Training and Development Manager Dan Jaspers and ISAF Inspector Richard Percy visited four selected national training programme centres in Cape Town, Johannesburg, Durban and Mossel Bay during their six day inspection, as well as a number of other centres along the route of their 4,000 km road trip. ISAF Inspector Richard Percy said of the Inspection and visit to South Africa, "The South African Sailing National Training Programme has proved itself to be robust and worthy of ISAF Recognized Training status. "It is clear that the legacy of the SAS Programme will enable greater numbers of children and adults to participate in the sport of sailing.
