Tricky Conditions at Princesa Sofia MAPFRE
Ben Ainslie (GBR) increases his lead over Giles Scott (GBR) in second and places 24 points from Thomas Lebreton (FRA), third overall. Dorian van Rijsselberge (NED) is eleven points ahead of Nick Dempsey (GBR) and twenty from Gold Medallist Tom Ashley (NZL) in the RS:X.
The day's tricky conditions distributed high scores to all the favourites and with two more races on Friday, the top ten places for the medal races not a done deal yet.
Mixed results also collected for French 470 teams who share top placing despite collecting their worse race results today. Nicolas Charbonnier and Jérémie Mion (FRA) are conserving the lead without winning a race yet. They struggled in the first race and took third in the second. Three points behind, last year regatta winners Pierre Leboucher and Vincent Garros (FRA) read the wind differently with a second in the opening race and a 28th in the second.
In the Laser radial, Paige Railey (USA) loses the lead for Evi van Acker (BEL). The American wins the first race but has to carry the 28 points collected in the second race and drops to third overall five points from the new leader. Veronika Fenclova (CZE) climbs to second overall.
Olympic Gold medallists Iain Percy and Andrew Simpson (GBR) are increasing their lead in the Star class after winning a race. New faces are coming to the top with Andrew Campbell / Ian Coleman (USA) in second and Diego Negri / Enrico Voltolini (ITA) third.
The Women's Match Racing fleet at the 42nd Trofeo S.A.R. Princesa Sofia MAPFRE has now been reduced to the top eight teams. The morning saw the completion of the Repechage Group to see who would advance to the Quarter-Finals with the Gold Group. Anne-Claire Le Berre (FRA) and Stephanie Hazard (NZL) were 1-2 in the group with scores of 4 wins and one loss each.
After two flights of the Quarter-Finals, Tunnicliffe leads Hazard 2-0; Le Berre and Leroy are tied 1-1; Lehtinen leads Hahlbrock 2-0; and Macgregor and Barkow are tied 1-1.
Tomorrow will see the completion of the Quarter-Finals and the Semi-Finals.

Estrella Damm Out Of Worst Conditions
Childhood friends who met at the age of seven or eight in Santander, the duo have been enduring a final slow sub-five knots drift northwards since the Balearics in only light breezes, covering only 20 miles this afternoon.
It is a startling contrast to the brutal conditions which were encountered by Estrella Damm in the Straits of Gibraltar yesterday, with Pepe Ribes reporting this morning that he and co-skipper Alex Pella had made 23 tacks in the 30 hours since Gibraltar, but the quieter conditions this afternoon were a welcome relief to the Barcelona based duo, who - true to their promises - look set to take the advantage of an equable routing past Calpe, on the peninsula just WSW of Ibiza, - where Ribes grew up and first sailed his Optimist as a nipper. Estrella Damm was only 12 miles off this afternoon, with their friends and rivals on Renault Z.E more than 100 miles to their north. For sure the dream of a podium place was finally blown away by the strong Levant of the last few days. Estrella Damm are expected in Barcelona Saturday morning, early.
Expected sometime between late Sunday and mid Monday, Neutrogena's Ryan Breymaier said today that despite their keel problems which have compromised their attack in the Atlantic since Cape Horn, he and Boris Herrmann will get off their 2004 Lombard design with their heads high, content that they have made their best possible race.

Clipper 11-12 Skippers Announced
The Clipper Race celebrates its 15th anniversary this year, the first edition having been run in 1996. It was established by legendary yachtsman, Sir Robin Knox-Johnston who, in 1969, became the first man to sail solo and non-stop around the world. He wanted to make ocean racing available to everyone, regardless of nationality or background, and since that first race almost 3,000 ordinary people have taken the opportunity to step outside of their comfort zone and do something truly extraordinary by taking on nature in the raw and racing around the world under sail. More than 5,000 people have been introduced to sailing through the Clipper Training programme.

Followers of the Clipper 11-12 Round the World Yacht Race can look forward to some exciting and exhilarating racing when the event gets underway this August. During the 40,000-mile race the fleet will stop at 15 ports around the world before arriving back in the UK in July 2012. For the first time the route includes an extra leg that will take the fleet from the west coast of Australia, rounding Cape Leeuwin en route to New Zealand, and then on to Australia's east coast.

America's Cup Shared Design Program
With the surge of new teams that just entered the 34th America's Cup, the 15 teams that met last week's entry deadline now have the opportunity to share in an initial design package from an international team of proven industry leaders.
"We gave the design and research team a simple brief: give us your best shot at a winning design," said Iain Murray, America's Cup Race Management CEO and Regatta Director. ACRM developed the concept and sourced international design and technology leaders to start designing a package for the new wing-sailed AC72.
"This solution is being offered to close the gap on the front-runners, and provide all teams, large and small, the opportunity to be competitive within the time remaining before racing starts in the new AC72 catamarans next year," Murray said. "Technology is a critical piece of a Cup-winning program and we want to ensure teams have access to the right people and the latest tools to design a fast boat while still managing their costs."
The ACRM AC 72 will be comprised of a platform designed by high-performance multihull design leaders VPLP of France and a wing and sail package designed by the North Technology Group (NTG), a global company headquartered in the USA. Both VPLP and NTG have assembled an international team of their top talent across all areas of the design and structures spectrum. The project will be coordinated for ACRM by Andy Claughton. Michel Marie is ACRM's technical consultant for VPLP and NTG.
Azurra Will Represent Italy in the Audi Medcup Circuit
The project's key strand is the Audi Azzura Sailing Team which marks the return to top level racing again this year of the legendary Azzurra colours, which will compete on the Audi MedCup Circuit 2011 for the first time, under the guidance of Riccardo Bonadeo
Audi Azzurra Sailing Team's new boat has been designed by Rolf Vrolijk and is being completed currently at King Marine in Valencia, due to be launched Sunday April 10th. The boat will be baptized on the first day of the first regatta trophy, planned for May 16th.
It will be skipperd by Argentinian Guillermo Parada, which has been involved in the Matador project for many years, guiding Matador to third place on the podium in 2008 and 2010 and fourth in 2009 .
Besides Parada, Vascotto and Bruni, the other members of the crew will be Italian Bruno Zirilli (navigator), Juan Pablo Cadario (pit), Mariano Caputo (bowman), Alejandro Colla (grinder), Pedro Rossi (mid bow), and the trimmers Maciel Cichetti, Paul Westlake, Simon Fry and Mariano Parada. -- Sabina Mollart-Rogerson

Royal Lymington YC Spring Series
In Class 1 the key to the first race was to judge when to strike out from the shallow water at the shore for the windward mark, Berthon, set in the tidal stream. On the first lap most boats over-stood it, while on the second lap No Chance over-stood whilst JIBE just made the mark, and gained significantly, hanging on downwind to win. With the slack tide in the second race, no such navigational gains were possible.
In Class 2 IRC the same conditions prevailed but using a shorter course than Class 1; Boomerang swapped places with Jacobite with a 2nd and a 1st so that after 4 races the 2 boats are level on 4 points. Hepzibah, with a 3rd and a 2nd remains in touch with 7 points overall.
In the Lymington Handicap fleet, Roddy Steel's Stren continued its winning ways in race 1 and Ray Mitchell's J24 Team Accomplice revelled in the conditions coming in with a 2nd and a 1st. After 4 races Stren remains in the lead with Jungle in second.
In the Folkboat class the Watsons in Crackerjack had a better day of it than last week with two 1sts leaving Tak to come in second in both races. After 4 races, Crackerjack and Tak are level on points and joint third are Aurora and Padfoot.

Platu 25 Match Race
As Edoardo Barni, the Platu 25 International President remarked: "The local fleets activity and match races - together with big International events - contribute to support and revitalize the Platu 25 class. Especially match races are an irreplaceable occasion to test a fantastic boat like Platu 25. That is unique because it's stable structure but nervous and dynamic features assisted by the symmetrical spinnaker, make the boat very technical".
Last Week, eight crews coming from all over Italy took part in the Platu 25 Macth Race 4th grade (Anzio 2 - 3 April) organized by Lega Navale Italiana in Anzio, in cooperation with the Reale Circolo Canottieri Remo and Sail Progress. They competed 33 match races, including a Round Robin and Final races for the first three places. Saverio Ramirez won, followed by Fabrizio Onofri. The third place was for Armando Miele from Brindisi. Luigi Ciavarrino, also, got a good first place in the Round Robin.
So, after this first test, Anzio is ready to host another match race. The Lega Navale Italiana in Anzio has a very intensive races program and it is becoming a benchmark in Italy for mach races events. Moreover, from the 9th to the 10th of April there will be a match race 3rd grade ISAF that will host even five International crews. That's a further occasion, for Lega Navale in Anzio, to develop an International vocation in organizing match races.
The Platu 25 boats involved in Anzio use special sails projected for match race by Montefusco. The boats are provided by Sail in Progress and from Reale Circolo Canottieri Tevere Remo. -- Translated by Kev Scott.
Illusion Vernon Easter Cup
On Sunday the fleet moved outside Bembridge Harbour for 3 very long races in a South Westerly breeze varying from 2-4 Beaufort with some awkward waves produced by a few jet skis and passing powerboats.
In race 6, the last race of the day, the fight was on for 2nd and 3rd place. James Meaning having already won the weekend. Mark Downer sailed to a comfortable lead. Taking risks Bruce Huber to secure a top place he infringed on Piers Thomas at the weather mark giving overall second place to Mark. On the water Piers Thomas would thereby finish 3rd and Ropert Holmes claiming another 4th place.
Because high tide is very late this coming Easter it was decided to race for the cup last weekend however it was agreed to attempt the race very late in the afternoon over the Easter weekend. -- Rudy Jurg
John Chittenden, 70, was found dead in woodland near Totnes on Sunday March 27.
In 1989 he skippered the 80-foot Creighton's Naturally to victory in the cruiser class of the Whitbread round-the-world race in an easterly direction.
Then four years later he won Sir Chay Blyth's inaugural British Steel Challenge in the other direction on board Nuclear Electric, which saw him named the 1993 YJA Yachtsman of the Year.
Mr Chittenden's son Stephen desxcribed him as 'a great man, a great sailor and wonderful father and grandfather'.
He said: 'He genuinely had hundreds of close friends in the sailing world and beyond.'
Mr Chittenden grew up in Sussex and became a master mariner in his early twenties after skippering oil tankers from the age of 17.
In the late 1980s he was cruising secretary of the RYA.
His funeral will be at St. Saviour's Church in Dartmouth at 1430.
* From Daniel Charles: Circumnavigating the American continent is one of the toughest challenges there is. I'm therefore dismayed to see the crown of being the first to accomplish such feat misattributed to Ocean Watch in 2010: it was actually done in 1977-78 by the Belgian yacht Williwaw sailed by Willy de Roos. At the time there were no GPS, no electronic compass (and one knows what happens to a magnetic compass close to the magnetic North), inexistent weather forecasts and inefficient clothing, so that the North West passage was much more difficult than today. De Roos' precedence does not diminish from the feats of Ocean watch or Solanus, but deserves to be remembered. Willy de Roos passed away in 2008.
