Contributions welcome, send to Semi Final Pairings Set Emirates Team New Zealand has selected Synergy Russia Sailing Team to race in the semi final round of the Louis Vuitton Trophy Nice Côte d'Azur. Team New Zealand and skipper Dean Barker were the best team in the rounds robin, posting a 9-1 record in 10 starts. They consistently won in the pre-start and had flawless crew work around the racecourse. "We're a consistent team because we've been together so long as a group. That helps us through the tough times," said Barker, the winning skipper of the 2007 Louis Vuitton Cup. The Kiwis, however, picked the hottest team at the regatta. Synergy, led by Polish skipper Karol Jablonski, enters the match on a five-race winning streak and has polished its game since starting the regatta at 0-3. The second semi final match has TeamOrigin from Great Britain racing Azzurra of Italy. Azzurra skipper Francesco Bruni led his crew to a 1 minute defeat of Ben Ainslie and TeamOrigin in the first round. The first crew to score 2 points will be the winner of each match. Concurrent to the semi finals is knockout racing for 5th through 8th place. BMW Oracle Racing takes on TFS - PagesJaunes in one match and Artemis races All4One in the other. Both matches are one race with the winners advancing to determine 5th and 6th, while the vanquished sail a one race match for 7th and 8th. Tomorrow is an off day and racing is scheduled to resume Thursday, 19 November. Today's anticipated final match between Team New Zealand and Synergy was cancelled in the afternoon when sufficient wind failed to materialise on the Baie des Anges. The cancellation of the match caused a re-scoring of the leaderboard based on Appendix C10.3 of the Racing Rules of Sailing, which awards partial points for those matches sailed twice. "The ranking was established in a way we were hoping to avoid," said Chief Umpire Bill Edgerton. "There's no difference between the top four and bottom four, but there is a difference in their order." The final order placed Team New Zealand first followed by Synergy, Azzurra, TeamOrigin, BMW Oracle Racing, Artemis, All4One and TFS - PagesJaunes. Final Round Robin standings Safran Leads At Half Way Marc Guillemot and Charles Caudrelier top the IMOCA Open 60 standings by just 23.3 miles this morning, with Kito de Pavant and Francois Gabart on Groupe Bel gaining ten miles since the same time yesterday morning. A third of their lead devoured, Guillemot remarked yesterday that his preference is normally to do the hunting rather than be hunted. The two leading sister-ships are very evenly matched now, whilst Mike Golding, the British skipper sounded mildly irritated this morning that, try as hard as they can, the two French boats have gained consistently over the last two days. In fact they have been breaking into slightly stronger breeze progressively and both Golding and Sanso acknowledged this morning that they may be losing a little time through manoeuvres - sail changes, mainly - due to their lack of time together as a duo. Golding and Sanso have lost 34 miles over 48 hours. Conditions are still not perfect, settled tradewinds. The unstable 12-20 knots breeze swings around in direction and rises and falls in strength, sailing under spinnaker may be pleasant but it is also tiring. Completing the ninth day at sea today the biggest threat to the leaders might be Michel Desjoyeaux and Jeremie Beyou on Foncia. Desjoyeaux noted that three hours of solid spinnaker trimming had worn out Beyou. They are now up to fourth place, accounting for Veolia Environnment who are now 45 miles behind and slowed too close to the cente of the high pressure, but Foncia are still 355 miles in arrears of the leader Safran. Having made just 14 miles on Safran since the same time a couple of days ago, then the leading trio can feel safe for the moment. David Lloyd is the only sailor who competed in all previous Dart 18 World Championships. In 1998, the British duo won its first bronze medal at the Dart 18 Worlds and number three followed last year. They took silver in 2007. So far into this season, they have beaten Dode in all meetings. The French couple Thierry and Christine Wibeaux will absolutely try to repeat its winning performance at the 2004 Worlds. From Germany, the former European Champions Matthias Huber and Dominik Volke will line up. The annual Aruba Heineken Catamaran Regatta will be held simultaneously with the Dart 18 Worlds. Twelve races are scheduled for the fourteen beach cats in the open class. Former winners Xander Pols (NED) and John Moret (NED) are believed to be the biggest favourites. Pols also took the line honours of the Zwitserleven Round Texel Race twice. The fleet represents the Dutch, German and Aruban flags, so it is going to be a match between these three nations. For the majority of participants, the long distance race is always the highlight of the week. It takes the fleet down the Aruban coast, along the harbour of Oranjestad and on the way back through a beautiful lagoon. The course racing around the marks takes place on the Caribbean Sea off Palm Beach. Due to the prevailing offshore trade winds, the water is flat. This allows competitors of all levels to participate. Both competitions will finish on Friday November 27, with a lay-day on November 24. -- Diana Bogaards Diana Bogaards (press) on her mobile phone +31 6 51383762 or e-mail to Marine photographer Steve Arkley will take care of the photography during both events. On Thursday, 12th November, Majan docked at Amwaj Marina which opened a year ago. Amwaj Marina is Bahrain's newest marina - the circular 60,000sq marina is located on the western seafront of Amwaj Islands and has 145 berths including four super yacht deepwater berths. The Kingdom of Bahrain is a small island country in the Arabian Gulf ruled by the Al Khalifa royal family. Bahrain is big on motorsports - it was the first Arab country to host a Formula One Grand Prix in 2004, and now sailing is taking hold. The voyage to Qatar did not take long with Majan arriving the next day (Sunday, 15th November), On arrival Majan berthed alongside the city's stunning bay the Al-Corniche, a long seaside promenade that curves around Doha Bay. It has been a busy week for sport in Doha with the England Vs Brazil football match taking place on Saturday and now the Corniche park is also buzzing with the set up of the UIM F1 H20 Power Boating World Championships which begins on the 19th Nov. 'Majan' will depart Doha on the 18th November for Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates. www.oceventsasia.com Phoenicia Crosses The Equator The level of piracy activity in the Gulf of Aden and Somali basin has increased dramatically over the last month. This is not good news for the Phoenicia team as they transit the high risk area. During this "nail biting" passage Phoenicia benefits from the support of Security Advisers Drum Cussac who are in regular contact with the ship as well as advice and information from MSC(HOA). Captain Philip Beale is leading the international team of 11 with caution and as a result Phoenicia is taking a wide easterly route around the Seychelles before they reach the south east trade winds to take them towards Africa. Tasmanian Team In Bid For Unique Three Peaks Double A team of Tasmanian sailors and runners this weekend will make a full-on start to a campaign to compete in both the Tasmanian and the British Three Peaks Races, the world's most challenging combinations of offshore yacht racing and mountain running, in 2010. After competing in the 190 nautical mile Maria Island ocean race off the rugged south-east coast of Tasmania starting Friday evening, the entire crew on Sunday morning will then contest the Point to Pinnacle endurance run to the top of Mount Wellington, towering above the city of Hobart. Team Whistler will be the first Tasmanian team to compete in both Three Peaks events, the Hydro Tasmanian Three Peaks next Easter and the British event in June next year, sailing their yacht Whistler here and then chartering the winning yacht from this year's British Three Peaks. The Tasports Maria Island Race starts from Hobart's Castray Esplanade next Friday evening at 7pm with a fleet of more than 29 boats, most of them using the race as a qualifier for this year's Rolex Sydney Hobart and Sargisons Launceston to Hobart Races in late December. However, Team Whistler will be in Three Peaks mode, taking only three sailors, skipper David Rees, Tim Jones and Jory Linscott, all members of the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania, and two runners, Jacqui Guy and Michael McIntyre. The 2010 Tasmanian Three Peaks will be Guy's 12th as a runner, more than any other woman, while skipper Rees has sailed in a Fastnet Race. The Tasmanian Three Peaks, starting from Beauty Point in northern Tasmania and ending in Hobart with a climb of Mount Wellington, involves 335 nautical miles of sailing, 133 kilometres of running and 2646 metres of ascent. The British event starts from Barmouth in Wales and ends with a climb of Ben Nevis in Scotland, involving 389 nm of sailing, 72 miles of running and 14,000 feet of ascent. Whistler, an 11-metre yacht designed by Australian naval architect Andy Dovell, has an excellent offshore racing record, including winning the Battery Point Trophy for first boat under 11m in the 2006 Sydney Hobart. The team's chartered yacht in the UK is a Reflex 38, a two-times winning boat in the British Three Peaks. -- Peter Campbell Fresh New Look Website For Kayospruce The site is expanded to include information on new products and special offers, as well as colour guides and facts on measurements, and most products are accompanied with an image or fabric swatch. Solo & Double Handed Sailing in Ireland In the past two years Ireland has seen remarkable success on the sailing world stage. Two of these successes have occured in short handed ocean racing with Damian Foxall winning the double handed Barcelona World Race in 2008 alongside French co-skipper Jean Pierre-Dick onboard the Open 60 "Paprec-Virbac". In June 2009 Barry Hurley won the Ostar (Original Single-handed Transatlantic Race) onboard his JOD 35 "Dinah" after a two year self funded campaign. Besides these two incredible victories there has been a large increase in the number of Irish sailors who are participating in solo & double handed sailing. Many are travelling to take part in events in the UK and France where this type of sailing is firmly established. All those interested in solo & double handed yacht racing in Ireland are invited to attend this open forum meeting to put forward & discuss ideas and ways to put in place the structure and events necessary to develop this type of sailing in Irish waters. The meeting will include two short informative talks by Barry Hurley about his Ostar campaign and by Paul Ó Riain on his experience competing in La Solitaire du Figaro and other Figaro events in France in 2007. All are welcome. RSVP below. Those unable to attend should forward their contact details to receive minutes of the meeting and updates on developments. The meeting is being chaired by Olivier Prouveur, Sailing Manager at the National Yacht Club.
