Emirates Team New Zealand's 'Taihoro' has first sail in Barcelona
Emirates Team New Zealand are back sailing in Barcelona. Their AC75 'Taihoro', meaning to move swiftly as the sea between both sky and earth, did precisely that off the Barcelona waterfront which will be the racecourse for the Louis Vuitton America's Cup, where racing starts in just 54 days' time.

Since Taihoro's arrival at the base last week after its 28-day shipping journey from New Zealand, the Emirates Team New Zealand shore crew have been working tirelessly to get prepared for sailing, including fitting and preparing two new foils which until today (30 June) had remained unseen.

With thunderstorms crossing Catalonia on Saturday the team waited patiently for them to pass before heading out for a brief afternoon sail in a building 10-18 knot SW breeze and lumpy sea state.

"It is great to have reached this really important milestone that we've had for well over a year now- to be sailing back in Barcelona by July 1st which we have actually exceeded by a day or so." said Emirates Team New Zealand COO Kevin Shoebridge.

Emirates Team New Zealand are the last of the teams competing in the Louis Vuitton America's Cup to be sailing in Barcelona, with the five challengers now well ensconced in host city and getting used to the varied conditions that the racecourse offers up.

IRC European Double Handed Championship Preview
This year's IRC European Double Handed Championship will be decided over 750 miles of racing across two challenging long offshore races (the Cowes-Dinard-St Malo Race and the Drheam Cup). French competitors vastly outnumbered all others for the inaugural edition last year. However, this year the tables have turned, with the British in the ascendancy, with almost double last year's numbers entered.

Didier Gaudoux and Gildas Morvan, who emerged as clear winners last year with back-to-back race wins on Lan Ael 3, are not returning to defend their title. Neither are the JPK10.10s that took places two and four. However, another 1010, Jean-Andre Hebel's Les P'tits Doudous en Duo, was third last year and only two points short of taking the runners up position. This was followed by winning IRC Two-Handed in the Rolex Fastnet Race.

Les P'tits Doudous en Duo has been renamed Abracadabra 2 and once again raced by Jean-Andre Hebel with Jerome Aubert, they will be a tough boat to beat.

Nick Martin's Sun Fast 3600 Diablo was the top-placed non-French competitor last year, with a performance including third place after IRC time correction in the Cowes - Dinard - St Malo race. "The level of competition in the UK is tremendous, with boats like Bellino, Cora, GameOn, and others I could mention," he says. "But the appeal of the double handed Europeans is that it pitches you against an even higher level of competition internationally, racing against some well-known names with well managed crews and boats. If you do well in this, you're doing very, very well. It's something to aspire to and something that we're very excited about."

Advanced Yachts That was priority one... closely followed by the most stylish, light and airy layout that the best of Milano could conjure up

A frequently heard cliche in yacht club and harbourside bars around the globe is that the design and handling characteristics of every yacht are the result of unavoidable compromises. To increase performance, space and comfort must be sacrificed. However, this is a massive oversimplification and one that the Italian boatbuilder Advanced Yachts has understood for a long time.

The sleek deckhouse integrates the lines of the superstructure into the hull
As a result, right from the start of the development process of its latest yacht, Advanced Yachts was determined that this vessel would offer the same uncompromising sailing qualities as the rest of the range, but would invest heavily in interior design and deliver unrivalled accommodation.

To break the cliche, they needed the very best in Milanese interior design - and they found that an 80-footer is the perfect size in which to do it.

Foiling Week 2024
The eleventh edition of Foiling Week ended today (June 30th) at Malcesine, Lake Garda, more than 380 sailors traveled to Lake Garda to participate to the first and unique global event committed to the amazingly fast foiling boats and boards, their sailors, designers, manufacturers and followers.

In terms of racing, after the end of the WASZP, BirdyFish and Switch one Design classes, the event concludes with the Moth and the ETF26 class races, both featuring many foiling stars onboard.

In the Moth class, participants include future competitors in the Unicredit Youth America's Cup, such as back-to-back winner Enzo Balanger (Orient Express Racing Team), Lucas Calabrese (American Magic), and Jann Schupbach (Alinghi Red Bull Racing). Additionally, Spanish Tokyo 2020 Olympian and SailGP Spain star Joel Rodriguez Perez was on the starting line, along with Olympian Simon Hiscocks, who also competed after grabbing the silver medal in the Switch class.

The Moth Class wraps up Foiling Week with a total of eight races sailed. French Enzo Balanger wins the event once more, after a pretty successful 2023 edition, ahead of New Zealander Mattias Coutts and British Simon Hiscocks. German Lisa Schweigert is first among women, while Swiss Antonin Radue is the best Youth Sailor.

Road To Gold Live Q and A with Olympic sailor and medal-winning coach Hugh Styles
It's no coincidence that Hugh Styles' coaching business is called Time On The Water. A former Olympic competitor in the Laser and Tornado classes, Hugh knows all about the importance of making the most of your time on the water. As a successful medal-winning coach on the Olympic circuit as well as in grand prix keelboat fleets including the RC44, Cape 31, Swan 50 and Maxi 72, Hugh also works hard with his clients to maximise the use of time AWAY from the water too.

During COVID lockdown for example, Hugh used Virtual Regatta to play out strategic and tactical scenarios in online game play. "You can execute multiple starts in one session and learn some of the hard lessons on the start line or at busy mark roundings in an online environment, which is all really useful rehearsal for the next time you experience those situations on a real race course," says Hugh, who'll be sharing his time-maximising tips with the Road To Gold audience on a live Zoom call.

Swan Sardinia Challenge 2024: Another memorable event in a new exciting venue
Photo by Max Ranchi, www.maxranchi.com. Click on image for photo gallery.

Swan Sardinia Challenge The Swan Sardinia Challenge 2024, an exclusive international event for the Swan One Design Classes ClubSwan 36 and ClubSwan 50, organized in collaboration with the Region of Sardinia and Consorzio Porto di Alghero, has successfully concluded after a thrilling series of races and a week full of high-level onshore events. Held in the stunning Northern Sardinia city of Alghero from June 26th to June 29th, the event showcased the best of sailing, community engagement, and sustainability initiatives.

Throughout the week, 11 ClubSwan 50s and 8 ClubSwan 36s competed fiercely in the pristine waters off the coast of Alghero. The competition featured sailors from around the world, representing 24 nations. The races were marked by intense rivalry and sportsmanship, exemplifying the spirit of ClubSwan Racing.

The new venue proved to be more challenging than expected by the fleets and with a tough weather situation only three races for each class were finished thanks to the patience and talent of the PRO Maria Torrijo. On day one two races were sailed with light wind, and after two days of no wind, the final race was completed by the fleets (29 June), the very last day of the event.

RS Aero European Championship in Carnac, France
112 RS Aeros from 14 nations contested the RS Aero European Championships in Carnac, France, from 21-24 June. As ever Carnac proved to be a wonderful venue with its fine Brittany beaches, bustling seaside town and excellent race course on the Bay of Quiberon.

Competitors enjoyed a good mix of conditions to produce worthy overall champions. Day 1 was super fresh 'Big Friday' with winds gusting over 25kns creating white horses across the bay. The downwinds were exciting with max power planing blast reaches bouncing over the wave tops. The runs ware a case of 'who dares wins', weaving through the waves to catch some awesome surfs whilst always striving for control and balance!

Day 2 saw four races contested and with a fresh 15-18kn breeze under blue skies racing was both exciting and physical with many tired but happy sailors at the end of a tough day! Day 3 offered a welcome rest with lighter winds, providing good variety to the Championship and allowing those who prefer softer winds to excel. Two races were held in 5-8kn of wind. Day 4 the breeze failed to materialise adequately and the Championship ended with 8 races already completed.
