First finishers reach Wicklow as SSE Renewables Round Ireland Race in end game
After battling a range of weather conditions, the first boats in the SSE Renewables Round Ireland Race reached the finishing-line at Wicklow today (Tuesday 25th June 2024) with both winning 'line honours' accolades.

Britain's Adam Davis on trimaran Paradox3 was first boat home and won the multihull 'line honours' while the same recognition was made to Eric de Turckheim on French entry Teasing Machine less than four hours later.

As this 705 nautical-mile race is decided on IRC corrected time for monohull boats, de Turckheim is the clubhouse leader with an apparently unassailable lead over the next potential rival, Pete Smyth's Searcher from the Royal Irish Yacht Club who is not expected to finish until Wednesday afternoon, depending on weather.

While Smyth and his crew were racing through the North Channel on Tuesday night, the bulk of the remaining fleet comprising 38 boats are all spread from Malin Head to the mouth of the River Shannon.

A large number of arrivals are expected to reach Wicklow throughout Thursday by which time the overall winner should be declared.

The Royal Western Yacht Club of England announces 'WORLDSTAR' 2026
The Royal Western Yacht Club in Plymouth, UK announces the launch of a brand-new around the World yachting event, the WORLDSTAR.

This event is open to all solo and double handed boats between 35ft and 60ft that has done a 2000-mile qualification passage in the allotted timeframe. The course is to start from Plymouth Sound National Marine Park, around Antarctica to starboard and return to Plymouth Sound for the finish.

Commodore and Race Director, Chris Arscott said, "As we know, The Royal Western Yacht Club was the very first club to introduce short-handed and fully crewed offshore and oceanic racing. We want to complete the offering by launching this unique and ultimate test of seamanship to complement the OSTAR TWOSTAR and the RB&I, an opportunity for those sailors who want to take on the World in their own boat without the need to spend huge amounts of money."

The RWYC have developed the WORLDSTAR to appeal to sailors who wish to complete a circumnavigation in their own boat, rating on IRC or non-rated, without the extensive qualification process.

High international and female turnout for this year's Gotland Runt
The world's largest annual offshore race, Gotland Runt, kicks off on Sunday, June 30th, in Sandhamn. After starting in central Stockholm in recent years, the race now makes an exciting return to Sandhamn, the sailing hub of the Stockholm archipelago, attracting both major and international boats.

Starting on Friday, over 200 sailboats will gather in the harbor at Sandhamn for Gotland Runt, one of the most prestigious offshore races in Europe. This year's lineup is particularly impressive with many international participants and a record number of women. Over 30 per cent of the crews come from abroad and 146 female sailors will participate in this year's race.

The participants range from leisure sailors to some of the top professional teams from Northern Europe. For some, it is a prestigious elite race; for others, a grand adventure and a "bucket list" item. A notable participant is Ravenger, a 175-foot (45 meters) boat, the largest ever to compete in Gotland Runt. Ravenger is one of the favorites to be the fastest around Gotland or even to break the course record.

The race starts on Sunday, June 30th, at 2:00 PM on Graskarsfjarden, just south of Sandhamn. The more than 200 boats will then begin their sail around Gotland, finishing two to three days later in Sandhamn. The course stretches 350 nautical miles (645 km) and initially runs along the archipelago up to Svenska Hogarna, then turns south towards Gotland.

RS Sailing leads the way with truly inclusive Championships for 2024
The globally renowned brand RS Sailing is thrilled to be supporting a combined Worlds and International Championship that features classifications so virtually any sailor can compete - making it the first of its kind for a truly inclusive, unified event.

Running from 30th September to 3rd October 2024, both the RS Venture Connect World Championship and the International Inclusive Keelboat Championship will be hosted by Rutland Sailing Club, racing on England's largest reservoir, proving that inclusion really is the solution.

This will be the first (RS Venture) Class Worlds to take place in the United Kingdom. As in previous years, the popular sailing class event will feature a World Sailing-sanctioned 'Para' category for teams consisting of two sailors both with World Sailing Minimal Disability (MD) Para Classification status at the time of the event, as well as an 'Inclusive' category, aimed at increasing opportunities for participation by disabled sailors whose disability does not meet the Para Classification criteria.

New for 2024, the International Inclusive Keelboat Championship will take place at the same time as the RS Venture Connect Worlds and will be raced on the ultimate one-design keelboat; the RS21. The inclusive championship is created specifically for disabled sailors whose disability does not meet the Para Classification 'Minimal Disability' (MD) criteria, helping increase opportunities for participation in international-level sailing events.

To register for either of the World Sailing events being held on Rutland Water this Autumn, visit the events portal rssailing.club/event-listing. Registration closes 31 August 2024.

Last-gasp victory for Bernaz in a thrilling medal race at Kiel Week
Jean-Baptiste Bernaz seized a last-chance victory in the final few metres of the ILCA 7 medal race at Kiel Week on Wednesday (26 June). It was a thrilling conclusion to a great afternoon of final races for five Olympic classes racing in light breeze and beautiful blue skies in northern Germany.

In the ILCA 7 men medal race, Frenchman Bernaz should have found the medal race fairly straightforward, having gone into the day with the yellow bib and a 10-point advantage over Australia's Zac Littlewood. However, Bernaz found himself struggling near the back while Italy's Lorenzo Chiavarini sailed a start-to-finish race at the front.

More importantly for the Frenchman, his friends and training partners were having good races up near the front. When German Philipp Buhl crossed the finish in second place, he was in gold medal position with Bernaz back in ninth. However, two penalties - one apiece for sailors from Argentina and The Netherlands - allowed Bernaz to slip through to seventh across the line. It was just sufficient for France to hold on to gold, with Buhl taking silver for Germany and Norway's Hermann Tomasgaard in bronze.

Not only was it the perfect way for Bernaz to finish Kiel Week, the final day drama ticked another box in his bid to replicate the discipline of the Olympic Regatta coming up a month from now. "It has been a great regatta all week," said the Frenchman. "It's a challenging place but it's been nice to come and get away from all the pressure of being in France in the build-up to the Games. It's been great to have close racing against Buhly and Hermann today and all this week. Now we'll have a beer together this evening."

INEOS Britannia has partnered with the sustainability collective Ocean Republic to repurpose its carbon fibre sails into merchandise, preventing the material from going to waste. The British Challenger of Record, representing the Royal Yacht Squadron for the 37th America's Cup, uses carbon fibre to produce the sails for its AC75 race boat, Britannia. Carbon fibre is used in the sailing industry as it is incredibly strong for its weight, but it can be hard to reuse due to the difficulty of maintaining the structural integrity of the fibres. INEOS Britannia wanted to give a second life its carbon fibre sails, and so partnered with Ocean Republic to make that happen.

Ocean Republic worked with sailmakers on the south coast of England to produce various products from INEOS Britannia's carbon fibre sails including laptop cases, travel bags, surfboard covers, tote bags and pouches. The project not only prevented the carbon fibre from going to waste, but also allows INEOS Britannia fans to own a piece of history with a truly unique product made from parts of their America's Cup race boat that competed in Auckland in 2021. With 10 per cent of proceeds from the merchandise going to the youth education charity, 1851 Trust, the collaboration is beneficial for both people and the planet. While INEOS Britannia has partnered with Ocean Republic to repurpose its carbon fibre sails, it has also been working to reduce the carbon footprint of the yacht by incorporating recycled carbon fibre into its construction, saving 17 tonnes CO2e.

The '64 collection was developed by Musto's designers with their clothing archive in mind and inspired by the brand's rich history, celebrating its successes both on and off the water with a nod to vintage styles from decades past.

From Musto's early beginnings after the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, where Keith Musto and Tony Morgan took the sailing world by storm, Musto's goal has always been to engineer technical clothing to help sailors perform at their peak and push boundaries, all while keeping them protected in some of the harshest conditions at sea.

Protection on the water has always been the priority and following the success and popularity of Musto's ground-breaking technical apparel, the brand developed a strong following from both sailors and adventurers from across the globe who wanted to show their support.
