Gunga Din Abandons Ship 80 miles off Bermuda, All Crew Safe
Gunga Din, a Swedish Yachts 41 owned by Robert Fye and Paul Cunningham, with a total crew of seven, had to abandon ship 80 miles from Bermuda due to water ingress. All crew members were successfully transferred, unharmed, to Desna, a Tartan 37 owned by Adam Van Voorhis with seven also aboard. All 14 are now making their way towards Bermuda expected late tonight. It is unknown at this time what precisely caused the water ingress.

Earlier today the crew of Alliance, who also abandoned ship on Sunday, arrived aboard Ceilidh at the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club to a warm welcome from family, friends, and fellow competitors on the docks.

As part of entry requirements, boats are rigorously inspected and sailors attend thorough safety courses to prepare for the risk association with offshore sailing. While the loss of these boats is extremely unfortunate, the important outcome is that all sailors involved are safe.

Taihoro has landed
Emirates Team New Zealand's AC75 Taihoro has safely arrived at the team base in Barcelona after a 28-day journey travelling over 13,000 miles between the Port of Tauranga and the base in the Port of Barcelona.

Taihoro, its mast, chase boat and other important consignment was unloaded from the kiwifruit reefer Baltic Spring at the Port of Taragona and was trucked the 100km to Barcelona in the early hours on Friday morning.

Already the team are into their work preparing Taihoro for its maiden sail in Barcelona where they will join the 5 other AC75's already familiarising themselves with the America's Cup racetrack just off the Barcelona beachfront.

Meanwhile an ongoing consignment of sea and air fright continues between the Auckland and Barcelona bases, such as the teams two AC40's racked and ready to ship from Wynyard Point.

Rolex is the Official Timepiece of the 2024 AEGEAN 600 Yacht race

Aegean 600 The Hellenic Offshore Racing Club (HORC), along with Olympic Marine, are pleased to announce Rolex as the Official Timepiece of this year's edition of the AEGEAN 600 yacht race. Starting on 7 July, just under the sea cliffs of Cape Sounion, with the ancient Temple of Poseidon as a fitting backdrop, this 600-mile annual race tour of Greece's scenic Aegean islands has quickly become a new offshore racing classic.

Nearly 70 monohull and multihull entries from 25 countries have registered to participate, a new record level of international interest. The event is based at the world-class facilities of Olympic Marine in Lavrion, Attica, where pre- and post-race activities are held for the race participants and their families and friends to enjoy the generosity of Greek hospitality.

Teams entered for the race are competing for not only the large perpetual trophy awarded the overall winner of the race – an exact silver replica of an ancient Attican ceramic vessel from the 5th century BC – but for the fastest entries a chance to also break the course record set in 2023 by the 100-foot monohull LEOPARD 3 (MON) of 45 hours, 5 minutes, and 25 seconds. Individual division and category winners will also take home trophies provided by the Benaki Museum which are silver copies of ancient artifacts that date from 3,000 BC of the Early Cycladic Civilization until the 5th century of the Greek Classical Age.

The strong participation of foreign teams in this year's fourth edition of the race indicates the importance of the AEGEAN 600 in the promotion of Greece worldwide.

Giles Scott secures second podium result after finishing third at New York SailGP
Giles Scott has secured his second podium result in as many events after placing third at the Mubadala New York Sail Grand Prix. While Scott was hoping for a win on his birthday in New York, his Emirates GBR SailGP Team finished third in the US capital. The result means the Brits are the only team to make it in to the final races of the last two events, after winning the Canadian Sail Grand Prix earlier this month.

The British crew put on a solid performance in New York and made it into the three-boat final race alongside New Zealand and Canada. All three teams crossed the start line in brilliant timing and were neck and neck as they raced towards the first mark with the Statue of Liberty in the backdrop. The Kiwis managed to take the lead and maintain this for the race – sealing the deal on their fifth win of Season 4.

It got off to a great start in New York for Scott, with him steering the team to victory in the first race of the event on Saturday. On Sunday, Emirates GBR started off strong once again and were leading for most of the first race of the day. Phil Robertson's Canada just managed to overtake the Brits on the last leg, with Emirates GBR finishing in second. Although they didn't get the win in New York, the British crew showed their skills in some challenging conditions on the Hudson River, finishing the five races of the event with a result of 1-7-2-5-3.

Emirates GBR Strategist Hannah Mills said the team was "super happy" to make it in to the New York Final.

A proper sailor's sailboat
Advanced Yachts That was priority one... closely followed by the most stylish, light and airy layout that the best of Milano could conjure up

A frequently heard cliche in yacht club and harbourside bars around the globe is that the design and handling characteristics of every yacht are the result of unavoidable compromises. To increase performance, space and comfort must be sacrificed. However, this is a massive oversimplification and one that the Italian boatbuilder Advanced Yachts has understood for a long time.

The sleek deckhouse integrates the lines of the superstructure into the hull
As a result, right from the start of the development process of its latest yacht, Advanced Yachts was determined that this vessel would offer the same uncompromising sailing qualities as the rest of the range, but would invest heavily in interior design and deliver unrivalled accommodation.

To break the cliche, they needed the very best in Milanese interior design - and they found that an 80-footer is the perfect size in which to do it.

2023 McIntyre Ocean Globe Prize giving
Heather Thomas and her all-women Maiden crew have been crowned the 2023 McIntyre Ocean Globe champions during a lavish mid-summer day poolside prize-giving party, hosted by and at Marco Trombetti's Translated villa headquarters in Rome.

The party, attended by VIPs from around the world and some 200 OGR crew members flying in from 13 of the yachts to have completed the gruelling 27,000 mile round the world yacht race around Cape Horn, celebrated long into the night. Thomas and her crew, the first all women team to win a crewed global race, were among the first to jump into the pool to celebrate.

Marco Trombetti, who raced aboard his company-sponsored Swan 65 yacht Translated 9 (previously ADC Accutrac in the 1977 Whitbread race skippered by the first female skipper Clare Francis) said of this amateur inspired race marking the 50th anniversary of the first Whitbread Round Race back in 1973: "This race has had a marked effect on all of us. It has certainly changed me. We won two legs, and also broke our boat, twice! But we persevered to complete the course. It has all been an extraordinary life-changing experience!"

Heather Thomas was full of praise, not only for her Maiden crew who came from all walks of life and 12 nationalities, but for Tracy Edwards whose drive and vision masterminded a repeat of her own all women adventure in the same yacht during the 1989/90 Whitbread.

The Tour Voile confirms its return to its roots
The Tour Voile sets off from Dunkirk on Wednesday 26 June, finishing in Saint-Cast-le-Guildo on 14 July. 103 sailors, including 36 women (from 15 crews), will be battling it out in Figaro Beneteau 3 on coastal races and offshore legs. Tip & Shaft takes a look back at this 45th edition.

Since last year, the Tour Voile has been raced in Figaro Beneteau 3 with crews of four sailors, including at least one woman and two young people aged between 16 and 26. In 2022, the French Sailing Federation, in collaboration with the Figaro Beneteau class, wanted to relaunch this competition so that it would return to its original essence, the transmission and training of young people in ocean racing.

Ultim Sailing, the company co-founded by Emmanuel Bachellerie and Mathieu Sarrot, has been entrusted with the organisation up to and including the 2025 edition. "For Act 1 of the renaissance of the Tour Voile, in 2023, we had partly grafted ourselves onto the organisation of the Tour de Bretagne, due to a lack of time, but for this 45th edition, we are alone at the helm," explains Emmanuel Bachellerie.

Ultim Sailing has enlisted the services of a new race director for the occasion, Yann Elies, who has agreed to take up the challenge: "Firstly because I'm very attached to the Figaro circuit, which trains the great sailors of today. But also because by allowing young people to compete on equal terms on a seaworthy, technical support and to set off offshore in complete safety, the Tour has returned to the essence of what it should be. What's more, it's a legendary event!
