Toto Wolff, Lewis Hamilton and George Russell take flight in Barcelona with Ben Ainslie's INEOS Britannia
Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team drivers Lewis Hamilton and George Russell with Team Principal and CEO Toto Wolff visited INEOS Britannia at their base in Barcelona as preparations continue ahead of the 37th America's Cup.

Hamilton, Russell and Wolff were welcomed by INEOS Britannia Team Principal and Skipper Sir Ben Ainslie, along with INEOS founder, Sir Jim Ratcliffe who took them on a tour of the facilities, which included time in the team's sailing simulator, before George and Toto joined Sir Ben on the water.

George Russell then took his F1 driving skills on water as he joined Ben Ainslie to put INEOS Britannia's America's Cup boat through its paces. While George usually searches for downforce on the track, today was all about lift as he took to the helm of 'Britannia' which flies above the water at speeds of over 90km/h. While Russell was at the wheel, Team Principal and CEO Toto Wolff joined the squad of cycling sailors, known as cyclors, to help power the boat via the on-board bikes.

Sir Ben Ainslie said: "It was a privilege for all of us at INEOS Britannia to show Toto, Lewis, and George around our base here in Barcelona. They have been supporters of the project throughout, and it was therefore very fitting for us to give them a closer look at our race boat for the first time. It was great to get the guys out on the water today too; they know their way around a car but made sailing our AC75 look a touch too easy for my liking. We're always looking for new and emerging talent to take the helm, but I didn't realise we'd find it in the F1 paddock!

Black Foils dominate in New York, securing fifth SailGP win of the season
The Black Foils have claimed victory in the Big Apple - securing their fifth win in 12 events and extending their lead at the top of the season standings. With only three weeks until the ultimate showdown in San Francisco (July 13-14), New Zealand will head into the Grand Final with a 15-point advantage over trans-Tasman rivals Australia, who overtook Los Gallos (Spain) to regain second in the overalls.

Celebrating the win, Black Foils driver Peter Burling said: "This weekend was our last chance to compete in the final before San Fran. We got off the line well three times, and then it was just sailing clean races. But it was definitely super hard on control, with all the ferry waves and the turbulence from the current and the water, so I'm really proud of the team - we're going to carry that momentum to San Fran. We're not just going to the final to be there, we want to go there to win it. We know that the last race is the only one that really matters now."

Marlow Ropes hits Dyneema recycling milestone with 'sustainable sailing' start-up
Marlow Ropes advert Marlow Ropes, the world-leading UK rope manufacturer and premium yachting rope brand have teamed up with Maritime Textiles Recycling Start-Up 'Sustainable Sailing' in a new partnership that aims to make actionable changes towards the recycling of materials used in the manufacture of high-performance ropes across all their market divisions.

'Sustainable Sailing' are an award-winning start-up company who have experienced significant success already, having won the IET Excellence and Innovation Award as Start-Up of the Year 2023, and going on to work with sail and equipment manufacturers in the maritime industry.

This partnership sees Marlow Ropes using 'Sustainable Sailing' as a recycling partner for their post-production bio-based Dyneema and HMPE PU coated waste rope and yarn. Using their unique DEECOM steam process to break down the yarn material and coatings, before returning them back to their polymer state for re-use and re-manufacture.

Back on form Charisma Claims 44Cup Marstrand with race to spare
Photo by Nico Martinez, www.martinezstudio.es. Click on image for photo gallery.

44Cup Marstrand Nico Poons' Charisma won the 44Cup Marstrand in 2023 and has been 44Cup champion for the last two season. But some changes in personnel and two deep results in Porto Calero, Lanzarote at the beginning of the year and then in Baiona, Spain last month had dumped the Dutchman's team at the bottom of the leaderboard. Yet over the last four days of the 44Cup Marstrand, despite racing in very mixed conditions, Charisma has bounced back to her previous form.

Charisma went into the final day topping the leaderboard, albeit only two points ahead of Hugues Lepic's Aleph Racing. Winning today's first race as Aleph Racing scored an uncharacteristic seventh, which the French team followed with an OCS and a second deep result, helped Poons, tactician Andy Horton, Chris Hosking (main trim), Ross Halcrow (headsail trim), Dimitri Simmons (offshore trim), Ryan Godfrey (pit), Robin Jacobs (grinder), Arancia Malaspina (floater) and Ivan Peute (bowman) win the 44Cup Marstrand with a race to spare - a rare phenomenon in this ultra-tight class.

"We've had two bad results after changing the team at the start of the year," commented a delighted Poons. "We have reinvented ourselves - and there is still some room for improvement - but I think we are back." Poons and the other 44Cup teams thanked the Marstrands Segelsallskap for running racing for them and for Torbjorn Tornqvist and Artemis Technologies for supporting the event and an exceptional Midsummer's Eve party in Marstrand's renowned Society House. "It was the best party I can remember…and I have been in the class for 10 years," enthused Poons.

Doyle Sails TP52 Renowned Spanish grand prix sailor Victor Marino is committed to pushing the frontiers of sailmaking design and technology. However he places even greater importance on servicing his clients according to their particular needs…

Victor Marino is the latest addition to Doyle Sails' virtuoso line-up. With a CV that includes several America's Cup campaigns as well as 10 world titles from performance dinghies to Farr 40s, TP52s and Maxis, Marino brings huge experience to the toptable conversation that lies behind the relentless drive for development across all aspects of the Doyle Sails operation.

At the apex of the sailing pyramid in fully professional events such as the America's Cup, The Ocean Race, the Vendee Globe and SailGP, the technology is unleashed to its full potential. Backed by big corporate sponsors, this is where the state of the art is redefined at every cycle. 'It is like Formula One where the development process is pushed to the limits. Then the discoveries which are made at that level gradually begin to spread throughout the sport,' says Marino.

First stop on that journey through the pyramid and not far from the apex are classes like the TP52s, RC44s, Maxis and superyachts, where professional crews support amateur owners and their guests. This brings another dimension into the equation and Marino is acutely conscious of the distinction.

Cup Spy: Cup organisers try to put the Genie back in the botttle
Just when it was starting to get interesting, the AC37 Joint Recon program has ended.

One of the better initiatives of recent America's Cups shut down on Saturday, as pre-ordained the Cup regulations.

All six teams are now in Barcelona, and four of those have clocked up up over 25 sailing days in the Mediterranean in their AC75s. All, except maybe the French are through their commissioning phase and are into the serious tweaks and refinements. There's plenty going on - if we're allowed to see it.

The contemporary America's Cup has modelled itself, or aspired to, on F1 Grand Prix - and in particular the "Drive to Survive" series which drew a whole new fan base. Those who are F1 fans will be only too aware of the access that TV cameras have in the pit area, and the discussions that ensue over the latest technology advance. The AC37 Recon system took the America's Cup into that realm. The problem now is that they can't put the genie back in the bottle.

Take last Saturday, four teams sailed off Barcelona, supposedly staying out of each other's way, but were unable to resist having hookups that went to the limit allowed under the Cup rules for two-boat testing.

Leaders pass Fastnet Rock off West Cork coast in SSE Renewables Round Ireland Race
Less than 30 hours after starting the 705 nautical-mile circumnavigation, the leading boats in the SSE Renewables Round Ireland Race have passed the famous Fastnet Rock lighthouse off Cape Clear island in West Cork.

On the water, the lead boat is Paradox3 skippered by Adam Davis but has been closely tailed by Eric de Turckheim on Teasing Machine barely two miles behind.

Although light winds have hampered progress for many of the 46-strong fleet, a forecast of fresh winds on the Atlantic coast bring the prospect of some high-speed sailing that could transform race standings, at least as far as the contest for 'line honours' for the first boat home goes.

However, the overall race is decided on IRC corrected time and so far the bulk of the fleet including many smaller contenders have yet to be left behind by the leaders.

Svea finish on top at The Superyacht Cup Palma
With a carefully crafted victory in today's final 25 nautical mile coastal race, the Swedish flagged Svea won the J Class at The Superyacht Cup Palma. Counting three race wins and a third, Svea won by three points. Highlighting just how close the racing was over the three days of competition on the Bay of Palma, Velsheda may have pipped the debuting Rainbow team, but it went to tie break.

It was soon after the downwind start that the Svea crew made their winning move. On the short initial downwind they were able to extend just enough to gybe in front of their two rivals and so lead around the leeward mark. With the wind averaging 10-13kts and peaking at a sporty 16kts just before the finish, Svea were able to control the race from that first turn and so clinch their third race win from four starts.

"The regatta turned out really close even if we had a nice win today," Svea's navigator Steve Hayles affirmed. "The downwind start today made it interesting. It all came down to a few metres and we just made the cross we needed to lead around the first mark and then we sailed a really strong race from there. But it was touch and go to start with."

Led by Erle Williams with six times America's Cup winner Murray Jones as tactician, Rainbow showed all of the potential expected of her. Three second places and a third, achieved with less than a week of sailing time together as a team, is a powerful message for the future.

Swan Sardinia Challenge
From June 25-29, in another first time for ClubSwan Racing One Design series, after the successful event in Bonifacio, Corsica, less than a month ago, the Swan Sardinia Challenge is set to take place in the stunning coastal city of Alghero, in the north of Sardinia, Italy. This prestigious event marks the third leg of The Nations League 2024, dedicated to Nautor Swan's one design classes. With the strong commitment of local organizers, this event promises to be a highlight of the sailing calendar, and it surely is highly anticipated by ClubSwan owners, constantly looking for the adrenaline, the glamour and great conditions they are used to find with the Swan regattas.

The competition will feature 11 ClubSwan 50s, the same fleet that competed in Bonifacio, and 8 ClubSwan 36s, with a new entry from Brazilian owner Alexandre Luiz Santos Leal. In total, 19 boats will compete, showcasing sailors from all over the world, representing 24 nations.

Extreme conditions severely depleted the fleet of the 2024 Round the Island Race, with hundreds of boats opting not to compete or retiring in 50-knot winds. Competitors in the 2024 Round the Island Race, an annual 50-mile circumnavigation of the Isle of Wight, faced one of the most severe conditions in years with gusts of over 50 knots recorded at The Needles, the westernmost point of the course. The Round the Island Race traditionally attracts one of the largest fleets of any yacht race, and this year saw 939 boats originally entered. However, the extreme conditions have severely depleted both the number of starters and finishers, and just 153 yachts completed the race with 418 retiring.

With two wins from two light airs races Doug DeVos' Quantum Racing powered by American Magic crew made the best possible start to the 52 SUPER SERIES' first ever races to be hosted by their home yacht club, the New York Yacht Club. The fives times series champions, now led by tactician Victor Diaz de Leon with Harry Melges IV steering laid down a marker by winning Race 1 from the start line and then passing Race 2 early leader Gladiator on the second round to establish a clear overall lead after the first day of the XS 52 SUPER SERIES Newport Trophy regatta. Underlining how fortunes pivot from one regatta to the next, Thailand's Whitcraft family - who were tenth last month at what was for them a disappointing season opener in Palma - today delivered a third and a second - to lie three points behind the leaders.

After 8 days of crossing the Atlantic, the crew of the Maxi Banque Populaire XI succeeded in their mission: to reach Guadeloupe with the Olympic Flame of Paris 2024
