Svea doubles down in the J Class on the opening day of the Superyacht Cup Palma 2024
The Superyacht Cup Palma got underway in fine style on Wednesday with the J Class again demonstrating what makes them such an eye-catching addition to any regatta, putting on a show of elegance and power with two windward-leeward races.

J Race Day - a riveting prologue to the Superyacht Cup Palma's full fleet racing albeit under untypical grey skies - saw Svea kick things off with a win in the first race, following a short delay as the breeze settled in.

Though last to cross the start line, behind her regular sparring partner Velsheda and the newly refitted Rainbow which was making her first racing outing in several years, Svea made a breakout alone to the right of the racecourse, a decisive move which put her on track to take the win by a six-minute margin over Rainbow.

Then the second race delivered another outstanding Svea performance with a second victory - though this time only by a minute from Rainbow - with the Swedish flagged yacht putting down a solid marker and making clear her intention of repeating her 2022 class victory. Velsheda meanwhile, who took J Class honours last year and an overall SYC win in 2018, will no doubt be determined to thwart that ambition starting Thursday.

Nine-strong 44Cup fleet under starters orders in Marstrand
Racing sets sail tomorrow in Marstrand, Sweden on the third event of the 2024 44Cup following on from Puerto Calero, Lanzarote and Baiona in northwest Spain. With support from Artemis Technologies and Marstrands Segelsallskap, racing for the high performance owner-driver one designs will take place over 20-23 June.

The RC44's annual waterborne pilgrimage to the paradise island on Sweden's rocky west coast comes at a time when Vladimir Prosikhin's Team Nika is the holder of the 44Cup's golden wheels; leading after a deliciously consistent 1-2 so far this season. Currently in second is Igor Lah's Team Ceeref Vaider (2-4) with event host Torbjorn Tornqvist's Artemis Racing third in the championship having won the last event in Baiona in May.

As champions, both on the 44Cup in 2023 and also here in Marstrand last year, Poons' Charisma is hoping it can show a return to form this week. "I love Marstrand – it's cool - it reminds me of home because it is cold and shifty! I really enjoy it," says tactician Andy Horton. "Expectations are high. Everyone has the same equipment so we are always trying to improve, but everyone keeps catching up. We are working on the communication in the group. We have to keep the consistency going and not complicate things too much, so we can keep focussing on the important stuff. These regattas always come down to a few points. Those few places are so important... Anyone can win an event in this class, which is testament to the strength of the whole group..."

Blasting in Barcelona: The First Harken Blockheads in The Cup
Harken Blockheads This was bound to happen...
We started Harken Blockheads to help the next generation fall and stay in love with the sport. Blockheads membership is completely free. There is no bottom age qualifier, nor do you ever age out. Once a Blockhead, always a Blockhead we always say.

A big part of the program has always been the willingness of some very fast, very technically inclined sailors to identify as Blockheads and play a role in our content as a means of giving back. They've set an example to which Blockheads everywhere can aspire. For the first time, there are Harken Blockheads in the boats on the foils in Barcelona. Check out this video as living proof. Thanks to Riley and Andrew and American Magic!

Harken keeps improving Blockheads so next-gen sailors continue to get the tools, skills, aspiration targets, and confidence to take charge of their own sailing. They discover it's just more fun when you don't have to rely on a coach or parent to help you rig, repair, or supervise your every minute. Earlier this year France became the latest country to launch Harken Blockheads. Sign up today at HarkenBlockheads.com to join more than 2,100 other Blockheads (a few of whom are now foiling toward the auld mug).

Vendee Globe: Selection has delivered its verdict
Vendee Globe: Selection has delivered its verdict The race to qualify and be selected for the Vendee Globe 2024 came to an end on last Thursday evening with the arrival of the 27th and final competitor in the New York Vendee, Denis Van Weynbergh. Of the 42 candidates, 2 will not be on the starting line on November 10, unless an exemption is granted. The final list will be announced on July 2. Tip & Shaft tells you more.

The New York Vendee-Les Sables d'Olonne was won Saturday 8 June by Charlie Dalin, ahead of Boris Herrmann and Jeremie Beyou. At the end of this single-handed transatlantic race, 42 candidates had completed their qualification formalities for the Vendee Globe. There was little suspense, since to validate this process (see notice of race), the 9 sailors who had not yet done so simply had to cross the start line off New York.

The aim of the selection process was to decide between the candidates if there were more than 40 qualified boats at the end of the New York Vendee. This is the case, with 42 boats having qualified, 13 of which were not involved in this "race for the miles", as they were exempt from the new-boat exemption.

Updated on the Vendee Globe website, the selection table has delivered its verdict: 39 boats have "made the cut", the last on the list being Violette Dorange.

Hard to beat the original - Gori Propeller
Gori Propeller The prototype Gori folding propeller was informed by a range of influences, from engineers, from a manufacturer of specialist paints and a designer from iconic audio group Bang & Olufsen. So it’s no wonder that approaching its 50th anniversary the original concept is still winning awards

The first real attempt to design a folding propeller with synchronised blades was made in Germany in the early 1970s. Shortly after the news broke, the phone rang at the office of the inventor, Mr. Menke. The man on the other end of the line introduced himself as Niels Oluf Ehrenskjold from Denmark, who ran a company called Gori.

At the time, Ehrenskjold’s company produced paint and wood protection for houses and is still a major player in the construction industry today.

Kiel Week 2024: Reunion from AFG to ZIM with a bye-bye to the Olympic team
Internationality and inclusive diversity are and will remain an outstanding hallmark of Kiel Week. Even in the 2024 Olympic year, five days before the first starting signal of the main organiser Kieler Yacht-Club, athletes from 53 nations have already announced their participation in the state capital of Schleswig-Holstein. The strongest Olympic class (22 to 26 June) is the ILCA 7 with former world champion Philipp Buhl from Sonthofen and 120 opponents in the one-man dinghy, including his strong international training group. In the (gender-) open, identical ILCA 6 in the second, international part (27 to 30 June), there are 175 boats. This is only topped by the traditional Aalregatta for sea-going boats. 194 boats want to race from the inner fjord to Eckernforde right at the start on the first Saturday.

"Kiel Week is a welcome home match and remains a fixture for us," says ILCA-7 national coach Alexander Schlonski, "even shortly before the Olympics, a top competition is more valuable than training on the water." After all, there is no material to test in the identical one-man dinghy. After a high-class Olympic elimination, which was won by two-time Olympian Buhl against the best successor Nik Aaron Willim, Schlonski leads a broad squad along with contenders, "which should secure the national level in the class for the next ten years in Germany."

An 'autumnal' atmosphere in Porquerolles today, with misty skies in shades of grey, white, heavy seas and a strengthening easterly wind at the end of the morning, with a peak of 53 knots recorded by the last competitor to reach port at the end of the first race... amazing conditions in Porquerolles at this time of year.

At 10:05 this morning, the race committee launched the first race of the 12m JI World Championship, putting on a magnificent show in Hyeres harbour. Let's get started! Ca smokes on the water in front of Porquerolles. The 224 sailors present were finally able to get to grips with the 6.7-mile course, which the frontrunners covered in less than an hour. At the end of the morning, squalls dotted the skies over Porquerolles, forcing a well-deserved return to shore after this invigorating start.

Back in port, the pontoons were abuzz with activity, with all the crews showing great solidarity to help each other and tie up to the pontoon.

Luxury British yacht builder, Oyster Yachts, proudly sailed to victory over the weekend at this year's Round the Island Race, with owner-skippered Oyster 595 XoXo winning the Silver Gilt Roman Bowl and Salver for ISCRS overall against over 400 boats, as well as placing 1st in her Class.

As well as first place in the ISRCS overall, XoXo was also first over the line. With an overall elapsed time of 06:57:49, she was over 10 minutes faster than her closest competitor, clocking the fastest time recorded in the overall ISCRS category in the last 10 years.

Conditions for Saturday's race were tough, with wind speed of Force 7 and gusting Force 9 and the sea state choppy for the whole race, but XoXo remained steady and safe, taking the challenging conditions in her stride. The performance is testament to the design and uncompromising strength of construction of the Oyster 595. The fact that XoXo was built, commissioned and is equipped for cruising the world on the Oyster World Rally 2026-27 — with every kitchen appliance, a watermaker, air conditioning system, and all the comforts of home — makes this victory even more impressive.
