Swiss break rig on glamour Barcelona day
Alinghi Red Bull Racing suffered a catastrophic failure of their mast today (13 June) in Barcelona just after 2pm with the afternoon sea-breeze well and truly in, with what the locals call a 'strong Garbi' from 210-220 degrees atop a 0.5-0.8 metres, three-second period swell from 230 degrees. It was a bear-away at top pace, with mast bend evident before the forestay went slack as the lower section in the bottom third of the mast gave way under pressure forward, causing the rig to collapse into the water to leeward.

Immediately we saw the superb crew work of the Alinghi Red Bull Racing sailing and support teams, swing into action with a composure and professionalism of the highest order. Make no mistake, this was outstanding team-work with divers in the water and all hands on deck to rescue the situation - all credit to the team. Safety of the crew was paramount and the first priority, and thankfully no injuries were reported. The integrity of the boat was the next priority, and this was secured quickly with only minor scratches observed initially around the bow area. All round a first-class effort from everyone on the water.

Obviously an immediate blow to the team, who have been putting in incredible performances on the water over recent months, the professionalism was mirrored shoreside by a swift and concise statement from Silvio Arrivabene, the Co-General Manager of Alinghi Red Bull Racing: "This afternoon, while executing a bear away in 20-knot winds, there was a mast failure on BoatOne. Everybody on board is safe, which is the most important thing. The boat is already back ashore which will allow us to quickly assess the cause of the failure."

A wet and wild edition of Round the Island Race
Photo by Paul Wyeth, www.pwpictures.com. Click on image for photo gallery.

Round the Island Race It was certainly a race to remember with crews battling the heavy conditions, especially around the Needles and the reach to St Catherine's Point.

Race Director, Dave Atkinson said: "This race was a challenge for both the competitors and the Race Team at the Island Sailing Club, with the safety and well-being of the crews being the main priority.

"We would like to thank the RNLI, independent lifeboats and coastguard teams for their assistance and co-operation before and during the race on Saturday. Despite the challenging conditions we only had nine incidents connected to the race which is less than previous years, this shows the seamanship of the crews and the correct decision making that went into undertaking of the race."

Race Safety Officer and Station Manager at Cowes RNLI, Mark Southwell said: "The sailors who competed made the right call and had a challenging but no doubt enjoyable race they'll remember. Those who cancelled or retired as they sensed conditions approaching the Needles also made the right decision.

"Sailing is a safe sport undertaken by responsible individuals who are more than capable of weighing up wind, sea state, boat and gear condition and crew experience and ability, and then deciding whether it is right to put to sea or continue to race. Yesterday was a good day for safety at sea. This is a race for everyone and everyone made the right call. We thank you for that."

The battle for the coveted Gold Roman Bowl was won by Peter Morton and his crew on TP52 Notorious who also won the Observer Trophy for Monohull Line Honours.

BSI Rigging - By Special Delivery
BSI Rigging It’s 2003 and professional sailors Ed Danby and Ben Wood decided to turn their hand to rigging and were the founding owners of Marine Results, later to be joined by Jon Morris. Just down the road was a rigging company gaining traction in the market called Ocean Yacht Systems Limited (OYS). OYS, a rod rigging manufacturer, specialised in standing rigging for the large yacht and superyacht sector.

Danby and Wood approached OYS looking for a forestay for 44.5m ketch Timoneer II (now Catalina). This project marked the start of a close working relationship. Marine Results was soon appointed a Service Agent for OYS and since that first project together they have rigged some of the world’s largest superyachts.

June 2024, and OYS, now part of the larger BSI Marine Equipment Group, has just completed the 20 years’ service on Catalina’s standing rigging working with Marine Results. This is a significant service, with the rigging at the end of its recommended lifespan. During this service all original hardware and rods were replaced and Catalina is now ready to set sail until her next service in five years’ time.

“A lot has changed for both companies over the past 20 years, yet there is one constant and that is the people in the business. All at OYS would like to congratulate Jon, Ed and the team at Marine Results on 20 years in the business. We thank them for their professionalism and knowledge sharing expertise. May they continue to grow here in the UK, at their base in Palma and the projects they manage around the world,” comments Robert Sargent, Sales Manager at OYS.

2003 was a big year for Marine Results and OYS, in addition to work on Timoneer II, together they rigged Mirabella 5 (now M5) which at the time was the tallest sloop rig at 89m in the world. The boat was launched in Southampton close to the home of OYS and Marine Results.

“We have worked closely with the team at OYS over the years and we are grateful for their ongoing support, attention to detail and experience. We have a close working relationship, and we look forward to continued growth for all of us over the years to come.” Ed Danby, Director & Founder, Marine Results International.

OYS and the entire BSI Marine Equipment Group went on to wish Marine Results a very happy 20th birthday and is looking forward to continuing to support the superyacht rigs they service.

Thailand's Whitcraft Family's Team Vayu win the XS 52 Super Series Newport Trophy
Team Vayu, the Whitcraft family crew from Thailand, kept their nerves and seized every opportunity they could, to win the XS 52 SUPER SERIES Newport Trophy today (17 June) at the end of two dramatic last races contested in light winds off Newport, Rhode Island.

It is a powerful statement result for the crew which finished 10th from ten in Palma in May. With young Don Whitcraft steering, Palma Mallorca ace Manu Weiller stepping in as tactician along with Wales' Will Best in as substitute navigator, Vayu overturned the three points deficit that they had behind Quantum Racing powered by American Magic going into today to lift the top trophy by two points ahead of Tony Langley's Gladiator.

It is the best ever 52 SUPER SERIES result for the crew which is led by co-owner brothers Kevin and Tom Whitcraft and this time includes four of their family, Malee, Nick, Dylan and Don. After taking third last year in Scarlino with double Olympic silver medallist Nick Rogers calling tactics, today they simply never gave up and were rewarded in the final 50 metres of the last race.

Kevin Whitcraft enthused, "This absolutely blows us away. We're totally amazed. We didn't expect to be first today. Mind you we did watch "Born to win", John Bertrand winning the 1983 America's Cup movie as motivation last night , just to prove it can be done. It's just fantastic it just shows that hard work, never giving up, always works and always pays off. We were last in the rankings after the last event and we came first this time. So it's possible."

Support is king
Support is king Hugh Agnew, a Cambridge mathematician and director at A+T talks to Seahorse about support, which he believes to be the single most critical item for a yacht's instrument system

A+T Instruments offer support on a 24/7 basis with expert technical advice from engineers who sail and understand superyachts and raceboats.

Most yachts travel far from their home port and from the original equipment installer, who only rarely continue with long term support or understand the finer points of sailing. Thus it is critical to have direct access to a dedicated team who really understand and care passionately.

Analysis of years of support calls received by A+T show that actual equipment failure represents only a very small proportion of these such as a failed pcb in a wind sensor or lightning damage. Much more common are questions on configuration, calibration, settings or trouble with wiring such as poor initial installation or water in wiring.

Sails of Change wins thrilling Bol d'Or Mirabaud on Lake Geneva
Sails of Change has taken the team's fifth win in one of the most exciting recent editions of the iconic Bol d'Or Mirabaud on Lake Geneva.

Yann Guichard - co-founder with Dona Bertarelli of Sails of Change - and his crew on Sails of Change 8 constantly challenged for the lead on their way to victory, while the experienced Duncan Späth, Bertarelli's son, contributed to the family challenge as the newly appointed skipper helmsman of Sails of Change 10.

"We are absolutely delighted to have won our fifth Bol d'Or Mirabaud," said a smiling Guichard. "The crew did an amazing job - sailing these boats for over six hours is intense.

"The conditions were fantastic today for most of the time, and it was the best forecast we had seen for perhaps the past 10 years. There was an element of luck as we were in the right place at the right time around Evian and got the new southwesterly breeze first.

"Competition in the TF35 fleet is fierce. The Bol d'Or Mirabaud is a very special race and I am so pleased for the team and Sails of Change that we were able to be successful once again in this remarkable location in another incredible event."

Range Rover J/24 European Championship, Irish boat Headcase wins second consecutive title
Today (16 June) saw the conclusion of the J/24 European Championship organised by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda with the International J/24 Class Association, the Italian J/24 Class Association and the support of title sponsor Range Rover. The Race Committee held three races, with a Mistral wind blowing at 10 to 15 knots, thus completing the maximum of 10 races set out in the schedule.

With precise manoeuvres and a 1-2-5 scoreline for today, the defending European champion, Irish boat Headcase, once again claimed the top spot in the blustery waters of Porto Cervo. "We're really happy," commented Cillian Dixon, helmsman on Headcase, "it's like a dream to have won the J/24 European Championship again. We are really satisfied. Today was a difficult day, we pushed the boat to the maximum and sometimes it didn't go exactly as we would have liked. We handled an equipment failure well and in the end we achieved an excellent result."

In addition to helmsman Cillan Dixon, the winning crew for the J/24 European Championship was made up of Sam O'Byrne, Ryan Gylnn, Marcus Ryan and Louis Mulloy - a close-knit group of sailors and friends who also took victory in the Corinthian classification.

Vesper Hangs Tough to Claim Overall ORC Win in NYYC 170th Annual Regatta
On a light-air, four-race day, the final standings in a top-flight competitive fleet are as likely to come down to the mistakes you avoid as the things you do right. That was the case in ORC B at the New York Yacht Club's 170th Annual Regatta. David Team's Vesper squad fought all day with rival Fox, skippered by Victor Wild, doing most everything as right as can be expected on a very challenging day.

"We felt in the first two races, when it was really light, 6 knots and under, that we had a click of pace on people," says Team. "But then the wind shifts come into play with that light of a breeze. The first race we got it called right, the second race we were on the wrong side of the shift, but our speed was still good all day."

As the seabreeze filled for Races 3 and 4, Fox found its groove. Going into the leeward mark rounding of the final race, it appeared everything was going the way of Wild's crew, which had a two-point lead in the standings and was ahead in the race.

"Fox was leading, we were trying to do our best to figure out how to pass them," says Team. "They fouled [a boat from another fleet] and they did the right thing, a 360, and that kind of just reshuffled the race."

The 5 Minute Warning
Well that's a fancy boat that PlanetSail's Matt Sheahan is standing next to by the Hamble River! Sailjuice's Andy Rice has brief boat envy but is more pre-occupied with his upcoming trip to Yorkshire and a potential capsize-a-thon at the Musto Skiff National Championship.

While generally the 5 Minute Warning tends to focus on the top end of the grand prix scene, this week Matt and Andy give a shout-out to the dedicated weekend warriors. There's an armada of assorted boats gathering in the Solent for this Saturday's Round The Island Race. The J/70 Corinthian World Championships have just concluded in Denmark with 109 teams taking part, and there are more than 300 sailors competing at the Finn Masters Worlds in Italy.

But of course Matt and Andy can't stay away from the pro scene for too long, and the results of the New York Vendee throw up some interesting thoughts about who will start as favourites this winter for the big one, the solo non-stop around the world adventure, the Vendee Globe. Do you go for a lightweight and nimble IMOCA knowing you might have to back off through the nastier conditions? Or do you go for a 'belt and braces' boat that will carry you through the storms but might be a little on the lardy side for the softer breezes? It's the perennial conundrum for all offshore sailors and designers...
