Charlie Dalin: The podium in IMOCA is much harder to reach now
Charlie Dalin has particularly enjoyed his convincing win in the New York Vendee-Les Sables d'Olonne race. And that's partly because he knows that even getting on the podium in the IMOCA Class is becoming more difficult.

Dalin makes the point that in recent years the podium was often occupied by the same three sailors - himself, Jeremie Beyou (Charal) and Thomas Ruyant (Vulnerable). But no longer…

"It's difficult in the IMOCA Class at the moment,"said the Macif Sante Prevoyance skipper, who reached Les Sables d'Olonne on Saturday evening after winning a fascinating duel with Boris Herrmann on Malizia Seaexplorer by a distance of around 300 nautical miles.

"You really have to appreciate and enjoy the wins and the podiums because I think they are going to be something that are getting much more rare than they used to be for all the top teams. There are many more competitive teams in the Class now - and they include Boris - and quite a lot of skippers are able to get good finishes. So it's going to become more and more difficult to get there,"added Dalin. -- Ed Gorman/IMOCA Globe

Quantum Racing win two-from-two for perfect start on home waters

52 SUPER SERIES With two wins from two light airs races Doug DeVos' Quantum Racing powered by American Magic crew made the best possible start to the 52 SUPER SERIES' first ever races to be hosted by their home yacht club, the New York Yacht Club.

The fives times series champions, now led by tactician Victor Diaz de Leon with Harry Melges IV steering laid down a marker by winning Race 1 from the start line and then passing Race 2 early leader Gladiator on the second round to establish a clear overall lead after the first day of the XS 52 SUPER SERIES Newport Trophy regatta.

Underlining how fortunes pivot from one regatta to the next, Thailand's Whitcraft family - who were tenth last month at what was for them a disappointing season opener in Palma - today delivered a third and a second - to lie three points behind the leaders.

And the theme of family success on the regatta's opening day continued today as father and daughter Hasso and Tina Plattner steered a race each - landing a sixth and second respectively - to lie third overall, those being the first races that the two owners have steered for more than a year.

Can the world's best ball bearing, overhead dinghy storage systems come from Pewaukee too? Yes! Lift. Launch. Harken Hoister.
Harken Hoister Over the last few weeks in Pewaukee, it's been time to free the boats we've had stashed up in our rafters. It's 'Hoister season'--the best time in the whole year to demonstrate what's best about the Harken Hoister. Hoister's whole mission is to shorten the time between where you store that Opti, ILCA, 420, Topper or___ and where you sail it.

Every Hoister is engineered to make lifting and launching a one-person, one line operation. Hoisters come with 100% low-friction Harken ball bearing blocks. Because each unit's mechanical advantage and line lengths are matched to the size and weight of your boat, Hoisters make raising and lowering no big deal. Pull that single line. Watch how bow-to-stern trim remains horizontally…horizontal. Even better, a patented auto cleat ensures everything stops right there—if someone should inadvertently, or perhaps even carelessly RELEASE that line.

You say you're still using that perfectly good set of jib sheets from the '77 European Championships for seasonal tie-up? What if we told you that we're pricing Harken Hoisters lower than their 2023 levels? Would that help? Get one right now, in the Shop/Hoister/Watercraft section of your favorite Harken website.

Thrills and Challenges Mark First Days of 2024 ORC Double-Handed Worlds in Norway
The ORC Double-Handed World Championship, organized by the Royal Norwegian Yacht Club (Kongelig Norsk Seilforening - KNS) in collaboration with the Offshore Racing Congress (ORC), is on its second day. After more than 27 hours of intense racing, the participants are showcasing their skills and endurance in challenging conditions.

The championship kicked off with participants navigating light winds in the Oslofjord, a challenging start. Despite initial concerns about the journey to Filtvet, the fleet demonstrated remarkable performance. They then encountered a brisk wind from the south towards Makrellbåen near Arendal, maintaining a high speed of 7-9 knots. The varying winds and currents created an accordion effect, resulting in significant differences in positioning early on. However, no major surprises were noted as some pre-race favorites pulled ahead, establishing solid leads in all three classes.

Class A saw fierce competition with Landmark 43 GAME, helmed by Calle Andersen and Espen Guttormsen, leading at the Filtvet Lighthouse mark yesterday evening. They were closely followed by Landmark 43 WHITE SHADOW with Karl Otto and Magda Mare Book onboard and Swan 45 ZORRO of Thomas Robberstad and Per Haugen. Despite GAME's strong start, ZORRO surged ahead in the final stretch towards Arendal. Currently, ZORRO, GAME, and SNAKKEN, Aquatich 40 of Per Sortedahl, and Frode Johansen, are neck and neck, with WHITE SHADOW close behind. Notably, TP52 JOKERMAN, sailed by Per Ottar Skaaret and Thomas Nilsson, has been the fastest with up to 10+knots speed, advancing to 9th place after a slow start. These are all Norwegian teams.

Smashing the Atlantic
With six months to go before the infamous single handed Vendee Globe Race around the world the focus is drawing in on the IMOCA fleet, both for spectators and the solo sailors themselves. And as the clock counts down there were two very important transatlantic races starting with the CIC Transat. Formerly the OSTAR, this is a race with a long and often brutal history. We take a look at what happened to the IMOCA fleet as they punched into some serious weather with expert commentary from IMOCA Champion Sam Goodchild on what we can deduce about the fleet and their machines from this race.

Last to enter, last to launch and with a young team with little America's Cup experience you might think that the French Orient Express Racing Team are going to struggle to play on equal terms in the America's Cup. But that's not how they see things. In fact, they might have pulled off a master stroke.

Foiling Week 2024
We Are Foiling is proud to carry on the tradition of dedicating every edition of the Foiling Week to a relevant Social Theme. 2024 will be inspired to YOUTH sailing and many projects and initiatives have been set (and will be) to support it all year long.

From June 24th to 30th, the racing show will be granted by six of the hottest classes at the moment: WASZP, Moth, ETF26, Switch One Design, Birdyfish and X-15 wingfoilers, able to gather in Malcesine more than 500 sailors from all over the world. On June 28th an epic Downwind Race, open to any foiling board with any propulsion except motors and organized in collaboration with Circolo Surf Segnana, will be run from Arco to Malcesine in the morning and back to Arco in the afternoon.

Once again Foiling Week will be organized with the support of the Municipality of Malcesine and hosted by Fraglia Vela Malcesine, a Club that has in its DNA the creation of regattas of excellence. The Foiling Week village at FVM will be open to the public during the event.

2024 edition of the Foiling SuMoth Challenge records the participation of 11 University Teams, contesting to design and build the best performing and at the same time sustainable Moth.

New York Yacht Club: Big Class or Small, Winning in ORC Will Be a Battle
The four classes racing under the ORC rule at the 170th Annual Regatta (14-16 June) break into two groups. Class A and Class B feature some of the country's elite big-boat programs, four 60- and 70-footers in former and four TP52s and a speedy new Botin ORC 45-footer in the latter. Pro sailors abound in these two classes, and optimal boat speed all the way around the track will be crucial. In Classes C and D, it's a different story. With 19 and 14 entries, respectively, getting off the line with a clean lane is going to be a supreme challenge. All the boat speed in the world isn't going to save your race if you start in the cheap seats and your first-beat tactical calls are dictated by a dozen boats sitting on your wind.

"We've had this boat two and a half years, and I think this is the most competitive class we've seen in ORC, and the tightest rating band," says Andrew Weiss (above), the skipper of the Italia 11.98 Christopher Dragon XII, which will sail in ORC D. "It's great. [The time allowances for a one-hour race] are going to be down to between no time on our sistership to a minute an a half. It's a good pre-cursor for the ORC World Championship in the fall."

The New York Yacht Club's Annual Regatta was first sailed on the Hudson River on July 16 and 18, 1846. A similar competition the previous year was called a Trial of Speed. With a few exceptions for world wars and other global crises, the event has been held every year since.
