Jethou and Wallyno reign supreme in Loro Piana Giraglia inshore
A second 20 mile coastal race, this time from Saint-Tropez down to a turning mark off L'Escalet and back, rounded off the inshore series for the maxis competing in Loro Piana Giraglia.

With racing here organised by the Yacht Club Italiano in collaboration with the Société Nautique de Saint-Tropez, Loro Piana Giraglia's inshores for the Maxi A and B fleets, formed part of the International Maxi Association's 2024 Mediterranean Maxi Inshore Challenge.

Jethou took the overall Maxi A win, following on from her last victory here in 2022. Most recently Jethou was second at the IMA Maxi Europeans in Sorrento. Over the winter Jethou has been fitted with 1.35 tonnes of water ballast, restoring her righting moment to its 2022 level while being lighter with less lead in her keel. Also new this year is Ian Walker standing in for Brad Butterworth on tactics.

A final bullet for Benoît de Froidmont's Wallyno, as Jean-Pierre Barjon's Botin 65 Spirit of Lorina, Guido Paolo Gamucci's Cippa Lippa X and Alex Schaerer's Swan 90 Strathisla fought it out ahead of her, secured the IMA President's Wally 60 the Maxi B prize, by a five point margin from Cippa Lippa X with Spirit of Lorina a further two astern.

Tomorrow is the Loro Piana Giraglia offshore race to the Giraglia rock off north Corsica and on to Genoa. The forecast has a westerly mistral blowing the competitors downwind to the rock, then dropped for the usual light wind nail-biter finish into Genoa. -- James Boyd/International Maxi Association

Less than 30 days to the AEGEAN 600

Aegean 600 It is now less than 30 days to the 7 July start of the 2024 AEGEAN 600, the annual offshore race organized by the Hellenic Offshore Racing Club in conjunction with Olympic Marine. This spectacular 605-mile race starts at Cape Sounio under the watchful gaze of the ancient Temple of Poseidon for a scenic tour of 23 islands of the Aegean archipelago before finishing back at Cape Sounio.

Among the offshore racing world's classic 600-mile races, this is the newest, with the first edition held in 2021. Since then the event's popularity has grown every year, with already 60 monohull and multihull entries from 18 nations planning to participate in this year's 4th edition, a figure that is on its way to a new record turnout with the entry deadline still a few weeks away on 30 April.

These entries represent a large cross-section of the offshore sailing world, ranging in size from Jerry Petratos and Evi Delidou's double-handed Dehler 30 AETHER to George Procopiou's Volvo Open 70, ex-I LOVE POLAND, last year's runner-up elapsed time champion. Teams also range from amateur crews racing for fun to all-pro squads in search of elapsed time course records and corrected time victories in IRC and/or ORC scoring.

In this latter category are two successful international teams making their AEGEAN 600 debut: Austrian Stefan Jentzsch's Botin water-ballasted Botin 56 BLACK PEARL and American Jason Carroll's MOD 70 trimaran ARGO. Both have proven track records and highly-experienced crews that are regular competitors in the world's most competitive ocean races.

"The challenge of this course is precisely why we are coming," said ARGO project manager Chad Corning. "That and we have heard this is a fantastic race, a very cool course and a must-do on the global circuit."

Geneva to host Switzerland's first Sail Grand Prix in 2025
SailGP - the world's most exciting racing on water - has announced the first-ever Rolex Switzerland Sail Grand Prix to take place on the iconic waters of Lake Geneva on 20-21 September, 2025. The announcement marks the third confirmed event on the global racing championship's hotly-anticipated Season 5 calendar.

The event will also be the home debut of the Switzerland SailGP Team, including Geneva-born Sebastien Schneiter, who will return as driver for Season 5.

The news was revealed at an event in Geneva and was attended by key officials from SailGP, including global CEO Sir Russell Coutts, Switzerland SailGP Team members, title partner Rolex, and representatives from Geneva City and State - all of whom worked together to bring the event to Lake Geneva, Switzerland.

Rolex will be title partner for the Season 5 event, building on an enduring near 70-year relationship with the sport of sailing. The Swiss watchmaker's position as Global Presenting Partner and Official Timepiece of SailGP began with SailGP's Season 1 in 2019, and has since been deepened with a groundbreaking ten-season partnership.

There will also be a number of community initiatives taking place in the build up to the event in Geneva, including SailGP Inspire - SailGP's community outreach and education initiative, which has engaged more than 21,000 young people around the world to date.

The inaugural Rolex Switzerland Sail Grand Prix is the third confirmed event on SailGP's Season 5 calendar, which will start and finish in the Middle East. The season will begin at the end of November 2024 and finish – after a minimum of 13 events – in Abu Dhabi on 29-30 November, 2025. The league has also revealed it will return to New York on 7-8 June, 2025.

Classic Solent racing
Photo by Ingrid Abery, www.ingridabery.com. Click on image for photo gallery.

Richard Mille Cup It was a fabulous day of racing for the Richard Mille Cup fleet, with bright sunshine and 15 knots of steady northerly wind showing off the Solent at its best.

As the regatta settled into its three-day stay hosted by the Royal Yacht Squadron in Cowes, the opening race saw two outstanding performances to win Blue and Black group that shook up the overall standings so far.

The forecast was for a breezy day and on some yachts reefs were being put in as the sails were stowed the previous day, following the arrival from Dartmouth.

So it proved to be, with a minor postponement by the race committee until conditions off the Castle flattened out a little.

The first start came at 11:30, with the 1920 Nicholson gaff yawl Patna well ahead of her Blue group competitors Alpha, Cynthia and Thalia.

"I'm looking forward to the Vendee Globe" - Boris Herrmann achieves back-to-back second place finishes
It has been a race full of emotions, decisions, and excitement: This Sunday afternoon, the Team Malizia skipper crossed the finish line of the New York Vendee in second place, achieving consecutive second place finishes in this year's transatlantic solo challenges, and final test before the Vendee Globe at the end of the year.

He did it! Team Malizia's skipper Boris Herrmann has secured back-to-back second place finishes in this spring's transatlantic solo races. While competing against 27 IMOCA sailors in the New York Vendee race to Les Sables d'Olonne, Boris Herrmann took a risky yet well thought-through strategic decision. He was the only sailor to go for a very northern route which saw him fight through light winds, and sail within as little as 300 nautical miles of Greenland. Boris Herrmann then reached the downwind conditions he had been chasing and raced fast towards France, claiming second place in the process. The Malizia - Seaexplorer skipper crossed the finish line in Les Sables d'Olonne this Sunday afternoon at 16:52 local time (14:52 UTC), after 10 days, 20 hours, 52 minutes, and 32 seconds at sea.

With his impressive achievements in The Transat CIC and the New York Vendee, Boris Herrmann has made a big statement highlighting his outstanding potential for the Vendee Globe. Before the start of the race, several competitors cited him as one of the contenders to watch out for, and the German sailor delivered. Not only was he the only skipper, along with race winner Charlie Dalin on MACIF Sante Prevoyance, to pass the infamous front that eluded all the other sailors. But he also surprised many by going north, while Charlie Dalin continued east. -- Helène Katz/Team Malizia

Jeremie Beyou (Charal) completes the podium
French skipper Jeremie Beyou held out under pressure to take third place on the second edition of the New York Vendee Les Sables d'Olonne solo race across the North Atlantic this evening (10 June). Winner of the first and only previous edition of the race in 2016, Beyou finished this Monday evening at 2111 hrs (local time, 1911 hrs UTC) to complete the podium. He was pursued closely through the final few hours of his race by the Les Sables d'Olonne favourite Seb Simon (Groupe Dubreuil) who is on course for fourth. Beyou, who finished third on the 2016-17 Vendee Globe, adds one more podium to a career record stretching back 20 years. He recently finished third on the Route du Rhum (2022) and last Autumn took third on the solo Retour à la base (2023).

"Like all the others I was trapped from the start. After that, it was a different race. Yes it's a 3rd place, but it's also a win in terms of our group. When I saw that I couldn't win the race, I said to myself that I could win our race. In the end, it wasn't really a race that boosts my confidence. It's been tough but I'm happy to have shown that I can put everything into it, constantly like on La Solitaire du Figaro over the course of 10 days."

His race in figures:
- Finish time: 19:11:49 (UTC)
- Elapsed time: 12d 01h 11min 49s
- Delta to first: 1d 21h 27min 19s
- Distance sailed: 3 169.88 miles
- Average speed (on the great circle): 10.96 knots

Beyou arrived in New York looking hungry for a result, desperate to get back into the thick of the action after having to retire from the westwards solo Transat with J2 forestay damage. He had to bring the Sam Manuard designed IMOCA across the Atlantic with a crew in delivery mode.

EUROSAF Match Racing, Open European Championship 2024: Ian Garreta wins
After five days of particularly hard-fought duels, Frenchman Ian Garreta won the EUROSAF Match Racing, Open European Championship in Marina di Ravenna, repeating his win just six months ago in Bedanne.

The championship was organized by the Circolo Velico Ravennate, in collaboration with EUROSAF and the Italian Sailing Federation, sailed with the TOM 28s owned by the club. The event enjoyed favourable weather conditions that allowed the completion of the programme set out in the Notice of Race. All credit is due to the professionalism of the Race Committee, led by Costanzo Villa, and the Umpire team, coordinated by Frenchman Arnaud Mante: the work of both was particularly appreciated by the participants and the Organizing Committee.

Ian Garretta, the French skipper who qualified for the finals as third, overcame Rocco Attili, winner of the Round Robin and reigning Italian champion, in the final with a score of two to zero. At the same time, in the final for third and fourth place, Poland's Patrik Zbroja beat Timotee Rossi to take the third step of the continental podium.
