French Skipper Charlie Dalin (Macif Sante Prevoyance) wins the New York Vendee - Les Sables D’Olonne
After leading the 28 boat IMOCA fleet since last Monday morning, and today (Saturday) holding a margin of over 300 miles over second place, French skipper Charlie Dalin completed an emphatic victory on the 3200 nautical miles New York Vendee Les Sables d’Olonne solo race across the North Atlantic.

Charlie Dalin : "I’m really happy, we won and that’s what counts! It was a great crossing, it feels good to win! It was the last rehearsal before the Vendee Globe, and so an important race to show the competition that I am here, I am present. I used the lessons from the outward race to New York particularly in my sleep and self management. I found my level aboard this great boat in all conditions. upwind and downwind.. It was really a great race, I had a lot of fun! It all happened three days after the start with this trough to cross and then this front. I managed to pass while most were still caught by this system. I managed to pass it and not get blocked or sucked back into it, the wind shifted, I was on the right side... It didn't matter much. After that, I continued to sail with a high intensity to stay in what is a Vendee Globe rhythm over the long term by managing my sleep and my sail changes. And then I attacked until the end! I was still hitting 30 knots a few hours from the finish. The idea was really not to let up from start to finish and that’s what I did. I sailed with my foot flat on the floor and there is no structural problems, which is good."

The skipper of the Verdier designed IMOCA Macif Sante Prevoyance broke the finish line off Les Sables d’Olonne on the French Atlantic coast, off the Vendee region, at 23:44:30hrs local time France (21:44:30hrs UTC) on a beautiful mellow early summer night. His elapsed time for the course is 10d 03h 44min 30s since leaving the start line - set some 90 miles offshore of New York - on Wednesday 29th May.

Loro Piana Giraglia sets sail with early maxi class leads for Jolt and Wallyno
While conditions at this time of year in Saint-Tropez are renowned for being light and thermal, today competitors at Loro Piana Giraglia were treated to easterlies into the high teens combined with a short violent chop. This was the second day of Loro Piana Giraglia inshore racing, organised by the Yacht Club Italiano in collaboration with the Societe Nautique de Saint-Tropez. These four days of inshore and coastal races form the third event in the International Maxi Association’s 2024 Mediterranean Maxi Inshore Challenge.

Today the maxi fleet again raced two windward-leewards on Pampelonne Bay, but the lumpy seastate made life challenging even on the largest maxis. The slightly depleted turn-out (due to the seastate) thinned out further as yachts were forced to retire with technical issues during racing. Nowhere was this more apparent than in Maxi A where Karel Komárek’s Wallycento V won the first race, albeit by just 10 seconds from Peter Dubens’ NorthStar, but then suffered a severe hydraulic failure in the second race, forcing her to abandon.

With Sir Lindsay Owen-Jones’ Wallycento Magic Carpet Cubed not competing today, a 5-3 elevated Chris Flowers’ Wallycento Galateia to fourth place in Maxi A and to the top spot among the 100s racing in Maxi sub-class 1. “We had a couple of good starts, which always helps,” explained Galateia tactician Kelvin Harrap, calling in the afterguard here alongside John Cutler and Markus Wieser (standing in for regulars Murray Jones and Jordi Calafat). “If you can get your nose in front on a 100 footer then you can put your elbows out... In the first race we gybed a bit early on the first run - with this course you can’t go through the finish line, even if you are laying the gate [the gate is downwind of the finish line], so we had to gybe, while V did it in one. In the second race we didn’t make that mistake...” -- James Boyd/International Maxi Association

How to make a boat - Part I
When describing the wide range of modern tools available to today's designers you soon run out of acronyms. Yet some of the best 'racing machines' ever still start life on a drawing board. Dave Hollom tells how the magic happens

Chilly bits
At 77 degrees north Dan Houston misplaces the ballast (bad) but meets a polar bear (unsure)

Big sea (small boat)
But if you do the preparation correctly then everything is possible. Racing a small boat shorthanded across the Atlantic is one of the bucket list challenges for many amateur doublehanded offshore sailors. Kate Cope looks at the different options from those who have experienced the races.

Good for all
The use of naturally sourced rubber has allowed a remarkable step up in the sustainable manufacturing of technical clothing. High performance on the racecourse can come at a high cost to the environment, but Zhik's new range of X wetsuits are performance-enhancing whilst being the least environmentally impactful yet seen in the sailing market.

Jerry the jumper
If there is ever a trophy for the world's most enthusiastic sailor Jerry Kirby will get a bye into the semi-finals. Carol Cronin explains

Brazilian Three Musketeers Seizes J/70 Corinthian World Championship
In Copenhagen Denmark on June 8, more than 100 J/70s contended for the inaugural title of J/70 Corinthian World Champion for 12 races over five days. With such a level of competition, it didn’t surprise anyone that the victor was decided in the final battle. In the Gold Fleet (55 boats), Alberto Guarischi’s Three Musketeers (BRA) with Antonio Moreira, Pedro Amaral and Felipe Rondina emerged triumphant with 11 net points. In the Championship series, three races had been completed heading into the final day. Ian Dobson/Charles Thompson’s Brutus II (GBR) won the opening battle, then Guarischi’s Three Musketeers the next, setting up a match race to settle the title. With the discard coming into effect, the Brazilian team was able to drop a prior BFD. In the final race, Three Musketeers finished fourth to Brutus II’s 25th, sealing the win for Guarischi’s team. Tonu Toniste’s Lenny (EST) compiled a very consistent series to secure the bronze position.

The Qualification Series occurred for the first two days, followed by three days of Championship racing. In the Silver Fleet (54 boats), Renato Faria’s ToNessa (BRA) with Alice Faria, Daniel Santiago and Alexandre Tinoco ruled, finishing only in the top five for 8 net points. Martin Hestbaek’s Pipaluk (DEN) placed second, followed by Ingvar Ferby’s Folkeslivs (SWE). -- Julie & Christopher Howell, J/70 Class Association

Cup Spy: Summer arrives early in Barcelona - Four AC75s fight for water space
Five teams sailed on Friday - four out of Barcelona in AC75s. Orient Express (France) had a solid session in their new AC75, sailing out of Barcelona. Emirates Team New Zealand continued to work up in AC40s out of Auckland. Their AC75 has passed through the Panama Canal and looks to be on track to start sailing in late June or early July.

What happened in the Cup - June 7, 2024:

- American Magic was turned around overnight by their shore crew, replacing the fairing pieces ripped off during the nosedive on Thursday's session off Barcelona.
- Alinghi Red Bull Racing had a good session sailing in a 15kt breeze from the south. The Swiss brought out their AC40 to provide contested race practice against the AC75, with Dean Barker and Phil Robertson driving the AC40 against the AC75 race crew.
- Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli also had a good session in the southerly breeze, sailing out of Barcelona.
- Emirates Team New Zealand sailed two AC40s off Auckland in a light easterly breeze with the AC75 crew, Youth and Womens crews all participating. ETNZ's AC75 raceboat Taihoro has passed through the Panama Canal and is headed for Tarragona, Spain, where is expected to be offloaded and trucked to Barcelona.
- Orient Express Racing Team had their first real sailing day off Barcelona, which went well enough, with the usual issues, but nothing too serious.
- INEOS Britannia did not sail

Roschier Baltic Sea Race - International Allure
The 2024 Roschier Baltic Sea Race has already attracted an international alumni for the second edition of the 635nm offshore race, organised by the Royal Ocean Racing Club together with the Ocean Racing Alliance. Starting on July 27, the race is held in almost continuous daylight of the Nordic Summer. Competitors will experience a huge variety of conditions in the enchanting Baltic Sea.

The Roschier Baltic Sea Race is held in the vast marine basin between Sweden, Finland and the Central European mainland, which provides a fascinating environment for the latest 600-mile race on the offshore racing circuit.

Finland’s capital city of Helsinki supports and hosts both the start and the finish of the race providing simple logistics for overseas competitors. Sailors already registered for the 2024 edition come from Australia, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Italy, New Zealand, Norway, Spain, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the United States of America. A warm welcome awaits from the RORC and the Finnish hosts.

Over 30 teams are expected to race for Line Honours and IRC Class Trophies. The overall winner is decided by the best corrected time under IRC, meaning all of the entries have an equal chance of winning the Baltic Sea Race Trophy. IRC is the time on time handicap rating used by nearly all of the major offshore races around the world. For competitors, making the best of the weather and ocean currents are the keys to victory.

Niklas Zennstrom’s Carkeek 52 Rán will be making their debut in the 2024 Roschier Baltic Sea Race. Zennstrom is a native of Sweden and his Team Rán are no strangers to the Baltic Sea having competed numerous times in the Gotland Runt. Steve Hayles is the navigator on Carkeek 52 Rán. He has competed in six round the world races and was the winning navigator for Team Rán’s back-to-back overall victories in the 2009 and 2011 Rolex Fastnet Race.

Finn World Masters opened in beautiful Tuscan setting
The 2024 Finn World Masters has been opened at the PuntAla Camp & Resort on the shores of the Gulf of Follonica, in Tuscany, Italy. Nearly 300 competitors from 30 nations have completed registration ahead of the start of racing on Monday.

Arriving in ones, twos, fours, eights and even 13 boats behind one vehicle, nearly 300 Finns have arrived to race over the next five days. The host club is the Centro Velico Punta Ala, set in a beautiful forest with a stunning beach along the blue sea.

After a week of sublime conditions for training, the practice race on Sunday was cancelled due to strong winds from a passing storm with temperatures in the high 20s. The forecast for the rest of the week is for light to moderate winds and plenty of sunshine. -- Robert Deaves, Finn Class Association
