Boris Herrmann Under Pressure From Southerners
This Tuesday, the seventh day at sea of the New York Vendee - Les Sables d'Olonne, while Charlie Dalin (MACIF Sante Prevoyance) continues to go it alone with a lead which now exceeds 350 miles over all of his competitors, the gaps are closing between Boris Herrmann (Malizia - Seaexplorer) and the group of southerners. And for good reason, while the first is entangled in the light airs north of the anticyclone, the others have clearly passed the second since this morning. They are in fact trudging along at an average of over 20 knots reaching towards the Azores and lining up the miles knowing that they will finish upwind.

What about the bulk of the pack? It's not easy, as it stands, to have certainty. Several options are still possible for this dozen competitors led by Violette Dorange (DeVenir) and James Harayda (Gentoo Sailing Team). "Our path is still not very clear. The Azores high pressure blocks our way. Either we manage to slide under it as best we can, or we cannot and we will then have to wait for it to slowly shift towards Europe and then follow its progression. If so, it will definitely be slower. So I hope that the first solution will work but it is far from being settled," indicated Nicolas Lunven (Holcim - PRB) who seems, like the others, to have ruled out the possibility of going very north,

Dolan takes second at Le Havre Allmer Cup
Twelfth at the intermediate mark at Eddystone light, Irish solo sailor Tom Dolan made the breezy south coast of England work for him as he staged an excellent comeback to finish second on the 420 miles 6th edition of the Le Havre AllmerCup early this morning. Dolan brought his Smurfit Kappa Kingspan across the finish line at 0156hrs local time off Le Havre just 9 minutes behind French race winner Gaston Morvan.

It is Dolan's best ever finish outside of La Solitaire du Figaro and proves he is on excellent form, achieving a regular string of top 5 and top 10 results this season ahead of La Solitaire du Figaro Paprec which starts from Le Havre on 17th August and runs to 15th September.

Dolan, who has always been fast downwind in a big breeze, made good choices and high speeds travelling east back along the English coast towards the turning mark the west of the Isle of Wight, Needles Fairway.

But he made most places on the return leg back across the Channel to the French port where he actually made a debut in the Figaro class in August 2018. Back then he had to retire from his first ever leg of La Solitaire after a rigging failure.

Giorgio Armani Superyacht Regatta
Porto Cervo: Perfect weather conditions and Sardinia at its best marked the first day on the water at the Giorgio Armani Superyacht Regatta, an event organised by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda with the support of Title Sponsor Giorgio Armani. North-westerly winds of 12 to 15 knots provided for excellent sailing for both the Superyacht and Southern Wind Rendezvous divisions, on two different courses.

The superyachts set off right on time at 11.30 this morning, leaving the waters off Porto Cervo to circumnavigate the La Maddalena Archipelago. After passing through the Passo delle Bisce strait and past the Secca di Tre Monti, they proceeded to sail around Spargi, La Maddalena and Caprera, leaving the island of Monaci with its characteristic lighthouse to starboard, then returning to the Golfo delle Saline, and from there to the finish line off Porto Cervo, covering a total of approximately 34.5 miles. YCCS member Juan Ball's Swan 115 Moat, with Guillermo Parada on tactics, clinched a perfectly-timed start on the pin end - the mark at the opposite end of the starting line to the Race Committee boat. From here Moat took the lead and crossed the finish line first in real time. On corrected time, however, it was Francesco De Santis' Southern Wind RP-Nauta 100 Morgana, with two-time Olympic gold medallist Luis Doreste calling tactics, that took the win by 1 minute and 35 seconds.

The Southern Wind Rendezvous division, reserved for yachts from the shipyard of the same name, sailed in a spirit of friendly competition on a different course, which shared only the leg from the start to the Secca di Tre Monti with the Superyacht division. From here the fleet headed upwind towards the island of Monaci, then down under gennaker to the south, rounding the islands of Mortorio and Soffi in front of Cala di Volpe bay, where the finish line was set up. Here the Southern Wind fleet anchored, giving participants the chance to relax on board and enjoy the beautiful setting before returning to Porto Cervo towards evening, in time for the Giorgio Armani Superyacht Regatta's most eagerly anticipated social event, the Owners' Dinner.

Gelert wins First British 5.5 Metre Championship for half a century
Some of the finest names in British yachting took part in the first 5.5 Metre British National Championship for around 50 years, held at the Royal Yacht Squadron, in Cowes, from 1-4 June. A small fleet of boats from three nations completed 10 races in a range of conditions from 5 to 27 knots.

Gelert (GBR 40, James Howells, Andy Beadsworth, Simon Fry) took the title win from New Moon III (BAH 25, Mark Holowesko, Christoph Burger, Peter Vlasov), who won the 2018 World Championship on the same course areas, with The Jean Genie (GBR 43, Peter Morton, Andrew Palfrey, Ruairidh Scott) in third.

The final day promised stronger wind, and though this only arrived at the end of the second race it was enough for The Jean Genie to showed her legs and they romped away for two race wins. In the first race The Jean Genie took the lead from Girls on Film after Peter Morton tacked repeatedly in front of his wife on the second upwind to push them back and take the lead. Gelert only needed one race to secure the title.

Gold and Silver Fleets Set at J/70 Corinthian World Championship
Copenhagen Denmark: The two-day qualifying series concluded Wednesday at the J/70 Corinthian World Championship, setting the stage for three days of Championship racing in the Gold and Silver fleets. Royal Danish Yacht Club in Denmark is hosting 109 boats from 14 nations. Puffy winds ranging 15-25 knots challenged competitors for another three races on the day, bringing the qualifying total to the scheduled six. The discard came into effect as of race five, further verifying the fleet split. In the end, 55 boats qualified for the Gold Fleet, with the balance to battle in the Silver. Scoring will start anew Thursday. The top three boats for the qualifying series were: Alberto Guarischi's Three Musketeers (BRA), Charles Thompson's Brutus II and Kim Christensen's Soffe (DEN).

Guarischi's Three Musketeers (BRA) added a third bullet to open Wednesday's flights, and Thompson's Brutus II also crossed the line first in this round. Thompson's Brutus II again won in the middle flight, along with Sam Haynes' Celestial (AUS). Isabelle Fellows' Calypso (GBR) and Phil Taylor's EV Experts (GBR) took victories in the final flights.

Announcing the 2025 RORC Caribbean Programme
The Royal Ocean Racing Club commemorates the start of its centenary in 2025 with the Caribbean Programme for January and February. Over 4,000 miles of warm water racing is organised, deep in the winter of the Northern Hemisphere. Two months of highly competitive offshore and inshore racing are available for IRC rated monohulls, multihulls, plus recognised racing divisions such as Class40s.

The 11th edition of the RORC Transatlantic Race will start from Marina Lanzarote on Sunday the 12th of January. The 3,000 nautical mile race across the Atlantic Ocean will finish at Camper & Nicholsons Port Louis Marina, Grenada, West Indies.

The Notice of Race for the RORC Nelson's Cup Series confirms a key change to the third edition of the event which will be held in Antigua. The RORC Nelson's Cup Series will be a stand-alone event, separate from the RORC Caribbean 600. Boats not entered for the RORC Caribbean 600 are very welcome to apply for the RORC Nelson's Cup Series.

The intention for the RORC Nelson's Cup Series is for two days of multiple inshore races 18-19 February, followed by a Lay Day. On Friday 21st of February, the 50 NM Antigua 360º Race concludes the series.

Newport Bermuda Race
The Newport Bermuda Race will kick off with its Starting Line Party and Live Show, sponsored by Orsted. The event will be open to the public at Fort Adams from 12-4 p.m. on June 21, with live streaming available online from 2 p.m. This year marks a historic change as the race starts for the first time in its 118-year history just off the shoreline of Fort Adams State Park. Cole Brauer, the first American woman to sail solo around the world without assistance, will be part of the Live Show, offering commentary and signing posters during a meet-and-greet before the show. She joins North Sails president Ken Read and local professional sailor Jesse Fielding on the broadcast.

Brauer is no stranger to Rhode Island and the Newport to Bermuda Race course — she won the Bermuda 1-2, a shorthanded race on the same stretch of ocean just last June, and then prepared for her around-the-world race at Safe Harbor Newport Shipyard for the rest of the summer. She was also a coach in the last edition of the Newport Bermuda Race onboard a youth team. From 12-1 p.m., Brauer will meet with fans and sign commemorative race posters on the grounds of Fort Adams.

Organized by the Bermuda Race Foundation, which is comprised of volunteers from the Cruising Club of America and the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club, the Newport Bermuda Race is the oldest regularly scheduled ocean race, spanning 636 miles and attracting sailors from across North America and the globe.

The 53rd running is scheduled to commence June 21st, 2024.

Sydney Harbour A Fresh Backdrop For The Globe40
Between Reunion Island in the Indian Ocean and Chile's city of Valparaíso on the west coast of South America, the city of Sydney, Australia, will form the link between the two in the Asia - Pacific region of the GLOBE40 2025/2026 course. Indeed, Sydney Bay is set to provide a fantastic backdrop for the finish of the event's 3rd leg in mid-December 2025 and the start of the 4th leg in early January 2026. In the meantime, the same venue will also host the start of the legendary Sydney - Hobart race on boxing day. The Antipodean stopover in this round the world race on Class40s, replacing Auckland in New Zealand from the first edition, this new venue will give competitors the chance to explore the Australian continent and the very attractive metropolis of Sydney.

Setting off from the second stopover of Reunion's Pointe des Galets marina in the urban area of Territoire de l'Ouest, the competitors will have to sail 5,120 miles on a direct course to the leg finish in Sydney Harbour.

The course will initially involve a rapid descent towards the Roaring Forties, past the French Southern and Antarctic Lands, like Amsterdam Island negotiated in 2022, before passing the longitude of Cape Leeuwin, the 2nd legendary cape on this circumnavigation of the globe. From there, the Class 40s will navigate the area to the south of the Great Australian Bight and the notoriously tough Bass Strait, before putting into Sydney some 400 miles north in the Tasman Sea. On the menu are around 25 days of full-on racing, which is set to be particularly complicated on the approach to the Australian continent.
