Going alone on the 'north face'... is Boris Herrmann gambling for the win?
After finishing runner up on the recent outwards solo Transat race to New York, losing out to winner Yoann Richomme by just two hours and 19 minutes, it seems like Germany's Boris Herrmann (Malizia Seaexplorer) might be gambling to go for outright victory on the fifth day of the New York Vendée Les Sables d'Olonne. But Dalin holds the lead again and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future.

After jumping clear of the pack yesterday as the first two to escape through a low pressure trough, this afternoon Charlie Dalin (MACIF Santé et Prévoyance) and Herrmann are already nearly 300 miles ahead of third place. And with just over 1600 nautical miles to the finish line off Les Sables d'Olonne the top pair are still putting miles on their pursuers.

But while the French ace Dalin has chosen to route under, south of an anticyclone and so will be racing into headwinds, Herrmann is heading more directly north, going the long way around the system to find the reaching and downwind conditions which are his boat's strongest point of sail. The German might sail many more miles than his rival but the computer modelling shows him covering that distance quicker and pipping Dalin for the win. This time he might not be bridesmaid.

Acrobatica captures Leg 2 of Atlantic Cup
After a 360-nautical mile race from Newport to Portland it was mere minutes separating first and second place. The Italian/French duo of Alberto Riva and Jean Mare on Acrobatica captured line honors when they crossed the finish line at 08:56:52 a.m. EST. The Italian duo also won the first leg from Charleston to Newport cementing their place atop the leaderboard.

Just 7 minutes and 31 seconds after Acrobatica crossed the line, Pierre-Louis Atwell and Maxime Bensa on Vogue avec un Crohn took second place which puts them in a tie for second overall in the race. The most dramatic finish of the day was between dékulpe and Everial, dékulpe edged out Everial by 25 seconds to secure third place.

The nearly two-day race challenged the teams as they wind on multiple occasions would drop off creating a restart and nearly all the teams were within sight of each other throughout the race.

The remaining seven teams will be in Portland through Thursday, June 6th. The Atlantic Cup culminates with a two-day coastal series Wednesday and Thursday that will take them into Casco Bay and the surrounding waters. The boats are docked at Fore Points Marina and visible from the Eastern Promenade. The race starts and finishes for the coastal series on June 5th and 6th are just off Munjoy Hill.

Tracking will be available on atlanticcup.org and the YB Races app.

Aegean 600 It is now less than 45 days to the 7 July start of the 2024 AEGEAN 600, the annual offshore race organized by the Hellenic Offshore Racing Club in conjunction with Olympic Marine. This spectacular 605-mile race starts at Cape Sounio under the watchful gaze of the ancient Temple of Poseidon for a scenic tour of 23 islands of the Aegean archipelago before finishing back at Cape Sounio.

Among the offshore racing world's classic 600-mile races, this is the newest, with the first edition held in 2021. Since then the event's popularity has grown every year, with already 60 monohull and multihull entries from 18 nations planning to participate in this year's 4th edition, a figure that is on its way to a new record turnout with the entry deadline still a few weeks away on 30 April.

These entries represent a large cross-section of the offshore sailing world, ranging in size from Jerry Petratos and Evi Delidou's double-handed Dehler 30 AETHER to George Procopiou's Volvo Open 70, ex-I LOVE POLAND, last year's runner-up elapsed time champion. Teams also range from amateur crews racing for fun to all-pro squads in search of elapsed time course records and corrected time victories in IRC and/or ORC scoring.

In this latter category are two successful international teams making their AEGEAN 600 debut: Austrian Stefan Jentzsch's Botin water-ballasted Botin 56 BLACK PEARL and American Jason Carroll's MOD 70 trimaran ARGO. Both have proven track records and highly-experienced crews that are regular competitors in the world's most competitive ocean races.

"The challenge of this course is precisely why we are coming," said ARGO project manager Chad Corning. "That and we have heard this is a fantastic race, a very cool course and a must-do on the global circuit."

Emirates Great Britain wins ROCKWOOL Canada Sail Grand Prix
Emirates Great Britain has taken the win in a weather-hit final at the ROCKWOOL Canada Sail Grand Prix - with driver Giles Scott claiming his first SailGP victory since stepping into the driver's seat in January of this year.

Today's win moves Emirates GBR up to sixth on the overall season standings, now 13 points off third as all teams push towards the lucrative $2 million Grand Final in San Francisco in July.

SailGP continues its North American tour with all ten teams heading to the Big Apple for the penultimate event of the season, the Mubadala New York Sail Grand Prix, 22-23 June.

RSYC Contessa Regatta
Blustery conditions welcomed 27 Contessa yachts of all classes to the Royal Solent Yacht Club for the second RSYC Contessa Regatta sponsored by Jeremy Rogers Ltd and Louis Jadot.

On Saturday there were three very lively races set in 20+ knots of breeze which suited these highly competitive classes competing for the Contessa 26 & 28 Nationals and Contessa 32 Inshore Points Series. Saturday night started with a rum punch 'pontoon' party at the RSYC followed by dinner, before the Contessa crews hit the dancefloor with customary enthusiasm.

Sunday's blue skies and calmer conditions saw two races in champagne conditions. A lawn full of contented sailors witnessed prize giving in front of the spectacular back drop of the western Solent. Fiona Rogers of Jeremy Rogers Ltd presented Magnums of Louis Jadot Moulin-à-Vent Château des Jacques to the winners of each class, which included a 'Concourse d'elegance' for the prettiest Contessa. The overall regatta winner Contessa 32 Collateral received a Jeroboam of the same.

Kinsale Yacht Club Dragon Gold Cup
Kinsale, Ireland - Already many of the big names from the world of Dragon sailing have confirmed their participation in the 2024 Dragon Gold Cup Kinsale sponsored by Astra Construction Services Ltd. With nearly six weeks still to go until the entry closing date, 30 teams from Switzerland, Great Britain, Belgium, Ireland, Germany, Denmark, Portugal, the Netherlands and France have already signed up.

Reigning Gold Cup Champion, Olympic Bronze medallist and America's Cup and Whitbread Race veteran Lawrie Smith will be defending his title, which he won in Torquay in 2023. Although British by nationality, Smith's love affair with Ireland is long standing and he will race under the flag of the Glandore Yacht Club. He first won the Gold Cup in 2015, but took some time out from topflight Dragon racing, before returning to the fleet in 2023 to win both the Edinburgh Cup (British Open Championship) and the Gold Cup in spectacular style, with a new crew of Ruaridh Scott, Goncalo Ribeiro and Richard Parslow.

This will be the 80th edition of the Dragon Gold Cup and in that long and illustrious history only seven sailors have ever successfully defended their title. Smith will be hoping to join Aage Birch, P Stulken, Bengt Palmquist, Fred Imhoff, Harm Müller-Spreer, Jorgen Schoenherr and Markus Wiser to become only the eighth person to retain the trophy.

Switzerland's Wolf Waschkuhn will come to the event as the reigning Dragon World Champion and having finished second to Smith at the 2023 Gold Cup in Torquay he will no doubt be looking for revenge. Pedro Rebelo de Andrade of Portugal won the Gold Cup in 2019 in Medemblik, while Germany's Stephan Link claimed the trophy is 2017 and both will be hoping for victory again.

Also racing will be Graham and Julia Bailey aboard the historic Bluebottle, which was raced by the late Duke of Edinburgh. Now owned by the Royal Yacht Britannia Trust, she has been fully restored to racing condition and regularly competes on the international circuit. -- Fiona Brown

Sir Kenneth Preston Regatta
The bank holiday weekend of the 25th to 27th May saw the Cowes Etchells fleet take to the Solent for the Sir Kenneth Preston Trophy. With this year's series already well underway and teams beginning to gel together, the weekend brought some extremely tight racing expertly provided by the Royal Yacht Squadron race team. It was great to see a mixture of expert seniors and youth boats all battling it out for top places.

Results were tight at the top coming into Monday, with it all to play for in the (slightly) calmer conditions compared to the previous day. In the end a fantastic effort by the boys from Greig City Academy, accompanied by Matt Reid, saw them with three bullets in their last four races, clinching the overall win by five points. This is a huge achievement against some high-calibre teams, without even mentioning that their helm, Corneille LePrince, had never helmed in an Etchells regatta before.

Thank you to Rupert Erskine Crum and his race team for providing a fantastic long weekend of racing, and for their excellent hospitality on Saturday evening. The tight racing was just another example of the skill amongst the UK Etchells fleet and provides great excitement for the rest of the series to follow. -- Jan Ford

JOG Update and Annual Awards Dinner
This season has been nothing short of spectacular, with a record number of entries and an exceptionally well-supported offshore series. As a prime example, more than 40 yachts were entered for the PredictWind race to the Seine Bay at the weekend, where our hosts in the twin towns of Deauville and Trouville welcomed the fleet at their modern clubhouse in the central basin adjacent to the twin towers of the harbour - what an incredible turnout!

Looking ahead to 7th June when our next race, the Osmotech Alderney race, takes us to the idyllic island in the northernmost part of the Channel Islands. With the long days and short nights, we hope all competitors experience the spectacular sunsets and dawns commonly associated with this race, not forgetting drinks and prizegiving at the Alderney Yacht Club (all details can be found in the sailing instructions).

We are also excited to announce that this year's Annual Awards Dinner is being held at the glamorous Harbour Hotel in Ocean Village, Southampton on the 9th November. Tickets are limited, and we recommend securing yours as soon as possible to avoid missing out on this wonderful evening.

Information and ticket booking here. Additionally, this season marks the third and final year for our Captain, Stuart Lawrence, at the helm. We invite you to join us to not only celebrate the 2024 season but to give him support for the fantastic contribution he has given to JOG Yacht racing over the past three years.
