Acrobatica wins Atlantic Cup Leg One
The first finishers crossed the Newport finish line, just off Fort Adams in the morning hours on Tuesday, May 28th. After a back and forth battle throughout the race with Everial, Acrobatica managed to hold on for line honors crossing at 07:46:16 a.m. EST enveloped in fog. Their cumulative time of 67:46:16 signified a new Charleston-Newport course record, besting the previous best time set in 2012 by team Mare (78:55:13).

Just 10 minutes 27 seconds later, Everial crossed the line followed by the youngest duo in the fleet, Sign for Com who reached the Newport finish at 10:00:12 a.m. EST.

After a slow start coming out of Charleston, S.C. thanks to extremely light winds, the sea breeze filled in to carry the fleet out and onto their journey towards Newport. However, flukey conditions with variations of wind and stormy conditions persisted throughout much of the subsequent 48-hours. Those who were able to catch the Gulf Stream's current and head furthest northwest had their positioning paid dividends- offering a quick and close dash to the finish line for the top competitors.

After Everial seized Acrobatica's lead in the late morning hours on Monday, May 29th- the Italian duo of Alberto Riva and Jean Marre pulled back ahead to reclaim their position at the top later that same day. With both teams notching impressive speeds, it was ultimately Acrobatica who held onto first-place.

The teams will dock at Safe Harbor Newport Shipyard until the race restart on Saturday, June 1st at 12 p.m. off Fort Adams. The public is welcomed to come visit the boats prior to race day, and to watch leg two commence on June 1st.

The best vantage point on land for the race restart is at Fort Adams and Castle Hill.

Leg 2: Newport to Portland
Start - Saturday June 1 - 12pm
Double-handed
249 nautical miles

Leg 3: Portland Coastal Series
Day 1 - June 5 Teams will race a 30nm coastal course each day

New Generation 80 - Baltic Yachts
Baltic Yachts Here's a first glimpse of a yacht to look out for this summer... a high-speed cruiser designed and built to participate in major Mediterranean regattas

There's a new generation of not-quite-80ft monohulls on the water, 24m LOA being a watershed for various reasons, and a fair few more new builds of that size are in the pipeline. One of the most interesting (and quite likely one of the fastest) is a full custom Baltic 80 with an impressive power-to-weight ratio.

Commissioned by an experienced yachtsman - his first build with Baltic Yachts - the 23.99-metre Baltic 80 Custom is conceived as a high-speed offshore cruiser with the ability to win Mediterranean regattas. It's a fiercely competitive circuit but she certainly has the design and build pedigree to be a strong contender.

'Performance cruising with ability to race what this boat is all about,' says Baltic project manager Lars Gripenberg

Alone Again and Finding A Rhythm to Last 3,200 Miles
After a night at sea alone and an accident that lead to one sailor sharing his spare parts with the other, the New York Vendée-Les Sables d'Olonne skippers started their transatlantic pacing each other perfectly on this final chance to gain valuable qualifying miles for Vendee Globe selection.

A live, digital race tracker, on board cameras and skippers using mobile phones to give tours of the glassy North Atlantic where the only ways to watch today’s start of the New York Vendée-Les Sables d’Olonne as the fleet of 28 slid southward in this final test before the 2024 Vendee Globe.

With a six-mile starting line equally 90 miles from host cities New York and Newport, Rhode Island, this unusual beginning to a transatlantic saw skippers precisely crossing this imaginary line at 2 p.m. local time after a night waiting alone at sea.

Many of the skippers must finish this transatlantic to reach their qualifying miles for the Vendee. The NY-Vendee is especially important as it is worth 1.5 miles for each mile sailed, fast tracking teams that finish to qualify.

Even though the IMOCA 60s are capable of covering more than 600 miles in 24 hours in heavier winds and moderate seas, this week’s trip across the Atlantic will be more tame and should take around 10 days. After three hours today the boats were all within four miles of each other pushing for every knot of boat speed.

The J/70 World Championships in Palma reaches its total limit for entries
With just a few days to go until the registration deadline for the J/70 World Championships (1st June), the competition's entry list has not only reached the maximum number of entries as established by the organizing committee (99 pre-registered teams), but moreover has a waiting list with an additional thirty teams signed up.

From 13th to 22nd September the Real Club Náutico de Palma follows in the footsteps of the St. Petersburg Yacht Club in Florida (United States), hosts of the World Championships in 2023 with a fleet of 83 teams. Tom Mallindine and Charlie Thompson's British team "Brutus III" confidently claimed the title in 2023 and will return to the Bay of Palma this year to defend it.

The most important J/70 fleets from 27 countries will join in Palma: the most numerous being the North American delegation with a total of 15 teams, followed by the Spanish contingent with 12, and the Italian and Brazilians with 7 boats each.

The Spanish fleet brings great potential to the competition, including some very experienced and long-established teams (the very first boats arrived in Spain in 2014). They include teams from Vigo such as Luis and Jorge Pérez Canal's "abril verde" and "abril rojo" (respectively) and Enrique Freire' "Marnatura" skippered by Luis Bugallo, or Jorge Martínez Doreste's "Hang Ten - Hnos Berga" and Luis Martínez Doreste's" Monjo" from the Canary Islands. Pablo Garriga's "Tenaz" and Luis Martín de Cabiedes' "Noticia" represent Barcelona, whilst Jose María "Pichu" Torcida's boat from Santander and Marcelo Baltzer's "Let it be" competes for Denia.

Seahorse Sailor Of The Month
This month's nominees:

Acrobatica wins Atlantic Cup Leg One Yoann Richomme (FRA)
For some years many of those who know the big oceanic classes the best have been eagerly looking forward to Yoann Richomme getting his hands on a good Imoca. They did not have to wait long… on his 2023 Paprec he has yet to finish a major race off the podium and after finishing second in the TJV he has won both of this year’s solo Transats. When it comes to weather and strategy Richomme is already up there with the greats; did not take him too long to master an Imoca either

Acrobatica wins Atlantic Cup Leg One Heather Thomas (GBR)
No sooner had last month’s winner glided gently into Cowes to take line honours in the Ocean Globe Race, than all eyes went to the tracker to monitor Heather Thomas’s crew on Tracy Edwards’ original 1989 Whitbread racer Maiden –who could still snatch the overall handicap prize under IRC. Well, they could and they did after keeping their foot in the whole way round the world while bringing on yet another great new group of now highly experienced women ocean racers

Acrobatica wins Atlantic Cup Leg One Last Month's winner:
Marie Tabarly (FRA)
For those worried about the gender balance in sailing do not be discouraged. Our last two winners smashed through every previous voting record, so the love is there… ‘As a crew on Translated 9, Marie has been a fierce competitor on the sea and a lovely person on land!’ – Ezgim Mistikoglu; ‘Marie carries the Tabarly name with honour, he who made us all dream back when we were young’ – Gerard Moneron; ’Marie is easily the greatest woman in the world!!’

XS 52 Super Series Newport Trophy - 10 - 16 June
After missing out on the first regatta of the 2024 52 SUPER SERIES season Hasso and Tina Plattner's Phoenix will be back in action at the upcoming XS 52 SUPER SEREIS Newport Trophy regatta in Newport RI.

With talismanic tactician, America's Cup winner Ed Baird calling the shots for the South African flagged crew, all are hoping they might return to something close to the wining form they ended 2023 on.

Runaway victors at the final event last year that high flying triumph topped the excellent fourth place at the preceding regatta in Barcelona, the Rolex TP52 World Championship, which marked had seen Baird's recall to the Phoenix fold.

But whilst Ed Baird and the hugely talented crew are determined to get back among the top positions in the white hot TP52 fleet, so too they are very much looking forwards to welcoming back on board the Plattner father-daughter duo Hasso and Tina who are the driving force behind one of the circuit's leading teams. Both have had an extended break from racing on the circuit.

In late April Phoenix trained with Provezza and Alegre out of Valencia, so although they missed out on Palma earlier this month, the crew have had time on the boat which has a new keel fin, rigging and sails for 2024. In South African former Shosholoza sailor David Rae they have a new mainsail trimmer, otherwise the crew line up is the same, with Baird working with Kiwi strategist Cameron Dunn and South African navigator Shane Elliot.

Greek Government revises Maritime Laws for non-EU vessels following Cruising Association's successful lobbying efforts
After extensive lobbying by the Cruising Association, on 24 May 2024 the Greek government has changed the laws governing vessels with a third country (non-EU Flag). Representatives of the CA have been in communication with the European Commission, lobbied Ministers in the Greek government and had assistance from the British Embassy in Athens.

Although these vessels will still have to get a Transit Log on arrival in Greece, with those that can demonstrate the status of Union Goods (i.e. EU Vat paid) being given a log of Unlimited duration (UTL), the requirement to check into and out of every controlled port has now been removed for those with a UTL.

Vessels that are not Union Goods will be given a limited Transit Log for 18 months and will still be required to check in and out as before.

This change is very significant and #TheCA is grateful for the prompt action of the Minister for Shipping and Islands Policy for recognising the need for this change and taking action.

Such a change would have been unlikely without the lobbying of a significant representative organisation and reinforces the benefits of CA membership. -- Luissa Smith, Cruising Association
