J/70 European Championship
Cala Galera, Italy: After several hours of waiting onshore due to a lack of wind, the fleet of nearly 90 boats from over 20 countries completed the 11th and final race of the J/70 European Championship series. This race was crucial in determining the final standings, which had been marked by dramatic shifts and intense emotions until the last moment.

The race course of Argentario favored Joel Ronning and his Catapult crew. The American team claimed the top spot in the European Championship in Cala Galera, edging out Brazil's Ocean Pact by just 6 points, while their compatriots on Good To Go secured the bronze medal.

According to J/70 Class regulations, however, the European Champion title must be awarded to a crew representing a nation from the continent. Therefore, the 2024 J/70 European Champion title was bestowed upon Wanderlust, helmed by Sofia Giondi with Matteo Morellina, Luca Tubaro and Filippo Baldassari on board. Placing fourth overall, Wanderlust achieved a thrilling victory. This young and determined crew has been making a name for themselves among the numerous professionals in the J/70 circuit, winning also the Italian Championship in 2023.

"It's an indescribable feeling, I'm speechless," said Sofia Giondi upon crossing the finish line of the final race. She added, "I want to thank my crew for the extraordinary atmosphere they created on board. Every evening, we returned home incredulous of our position in the standings, but we faced every challenge of this long and complicated Championship with concentration. Thanks also to everyone who supported us from afar; there were so many of you, thank you!"

Wanderlust also secured the European Corinthian title, reserved for non-professionals, and climbed on top of the division for female skippers.

In the Corinthian podium, Wanderlust was followed by Jeepster (GBR) and Marnatura (ESP). The "Young Crew" award for the best youth team went to Bulla - Yacht Club Italiano (ITA). Why Not #CAIM (ITA) won the Mixed Plus division, while War Canoe (USA) was awarded in the One Pro category.

Caracole repeats Swiss Open 5.5 Metre Title
Caracole (SUI 214, Bernard Haissly, Nicolas Berthoud, Daniel Stampfli) have successfully defended their Swiss open title at Société Nautique Rolloise, at Rolle, on Lake Geneva, after schooling the fleet on light wind speed and tactics. Winning four out of five races sailed, they retained the title with less than a third of the points of runner up MF XXII (SUI 233, Jürg Menz, Cédric Evard, Christof Wilke). Third place went to Dune (SUI 218, Philippe Kolly, Annette Martin, Philippe Dupont).

After only a single race was sailed on Thursday, Friday brought brighter prospects, but it was again a long day. One race was sailed in the very light morning breeze, but three more were sailed in the afternoon in a building thermal wind and great conditions.

Top five final results
1. Caracole (SUI 214, Bernard Haissly, Nicolas Berthoud, Daniel Stampfli) 6
2. MF XXII (SUI 233, Jürg Menz, Cédric Evard, Christof Wilke) 20
3. Dune (SUI 218, Philippe Kolly, Annette Martin, Philippe Dupont) 23
4. MELX IV (GRE 6, Stavros Papagiannopoulos, Yannis Mitakis, Panagiotis Kambouridis) 23

Less than 45 days to the AEGEAN 600

Aegean 600 It is now less than 45 days to the 7 July start of the 2024 AEGEAN 600, the annual offshore race organized by the Hellenic Offshore Racing Club in conjunction with Olympic Marine. This spectacular 605-mile race starts at Cape Sounio under the watchful gaze of the ancient Temple of Poseidon for a scenic tour of 23 islands of the Aegean archipelago before finishing back at Cape Sounio.

Among the offshore racing world's classic 600-mile races, this is the newest, with the first edition held in 2021. Since then the event's popularity has grown every year, with already 60 monohull and multihull entries from 18 nations planning to participate in this year's 4th edition, a figure that is on its way to a new record turnout with the entry deadline still a few weeks away on 30 April.

These entries represent a large cross-section of the offshore sailing world, ranging in size from Jerry Petratos and Evi Delidou's double-handed Dehler 30 AETHER to George Procopiou's Volvo Open 70, ex-I LOVE POLAND, last year's runner-up elapsed time champion. Teams also range from amateur crews racing for fun to all-pro squads in search of elapsed time course records and corrected time victories in IRC and/or ORC scoring.

In this latter category are two successful international teams making their AEGEAN 600 debut: Austrian Stefan Jentzsch's Botin water-ballasted Botin 56 BLACK PEARL and American Jason Carroll's MOD 70 trimaran ARGO. Both have proven track records and highly-experienced crews that are regular competitors in the world's most competitive ocean races.

"The challenge of this course is precisely why we are coming," said ARGO project manager Chad Corning. "That and we have heard this is a fantastic race, a very cool course and a must-do on the global circuit."

Cup Spy : Two teams dance the AC75 Tango in Barcelona
Two AC75 teams lined up against each other, in the chaperoned way prescribed by the America's Cup Protocol. The sixth and final AC75 race boat was revealed by the French team Orient Express Racing.

What happened in the Cup - May 245, 2024:

- Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli sailed for the second day off Barcelona in the occasional company of US Challenger American Magic, sailing in winds of 7-12kts and a left over seaway from the previous day.

- Orient Express Racing Team: Yesterday the revealed their AC75 raceboat, outside their Barcelona base, we have the report from the AC37 Joint Recon Team in this issue. It is to a base design supplied by Emirates Team New Zealand, and has some obvious similarities to 'Taihoro'. A launch date has yet to be publicly advised.

- Alinghi Red Bull Racing did not sail today.

- Emirates Team New Zealand did not sail today. Emirates Team New Zealand's AC75 is in the process of being shipped to Barcelona. It left NZ on Tuesday afternoon and will go through the Panama Canal en route to Spain.

- American Magic put in a five hour session sailing on a similar part of the Barcelona coastline. In the latter stages of the session they intersected courses with Luna Rossa, from what Cup Spy has been able to find on the video shot by the America's Cup Recon, there was no infringement of the rules covering such encounters, and each team and pundits will take away what they will.

- INEOS Britannia did not sail as stated after Thursday's session and will not be back off Barcelona until Monday.

Road to the America's Cup - Episode 10
Of the six teams that signed up to the 37th America's Cup cycle, four had sailed in the previous event in Auckland. Four teams that already knew how hard the task was going to be and four teams who came away from the last America's Cup with pages of notes on how they would do things differently next time around.

Anyone coming into the 37th Cup afresh would need to be playing a big game of catch up.

But while Alinghi Red Bull Racing are one of those, having won the America's Cup twice before, the Swiss team has an impressive track record. Matt Sheahan goes to their base in Barcelona to find out how they have been playing catch up.

The 5 Minute Warning
Sailjuice's Andy Rice calls up from Turkey to update PlanetSail's Matt Sheahan on the world of wingfoil racing. One of the big topics is lowest possible take-off windspeed for foiling, a common design challenge for all forms of foiling craft including the AC75s aiming at the next America's Cup.

Matt reports that the Kiwis have done some digital mapping of all the challengers' new designs and... surprise, surprise! The Kiwi analysis reveals that it's none other than their own boat that is looking fastest for the Cup! Real news, or smoke and mirrors? Who knows...

Meanwhile the venerable old J Class yacht, Shamrock V, has been beautifully restored while the IMOCA fleet is ready for a rematch back across the Atlantic in the New York Vendée...

Following the recent completion of Simpson Marine's acquisition by Sanlorenzo, Asia's largest yacht and superyacht services business is now on a path of expansion which will see the company extend its operating footprint throughout the APAC region. This process will see three new offices open this year in Australia, Vietnam and Japan.

Now trading as the Simpson Marine Group (SMG) as part of Sanlorenzo, SMG chief operating officer Richard Allen confirmed the new locations to IBI during the launch of the SL 50Steel superyacht MY Almax in La Spezia, Italy last weekend.

The strategy for SMG was planned by Massimo Perotti, Sanlorenzo chairman and CEO, during the long period that it took to negotiate the purchase deal with Mike Simpson who founded Simpson Marine 40 years ago.

The new offices will be added to the 11 that are already opearting in the APAC region – in China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand. The strategy for SMG, in addition to expanding its geographical footprint, is to expand its brokerage activities, especially for superyachts and also chartering.
