Bella Mente claims IMA Maxi European Championship
In a great display of on-the-water dominance within an already elite-level class, Hap Fauth, tactician Terry Hutchinson and the all-star cast of the Maxi 74 Bella Mente have claimed the third edition of the IMA Maxi European Championship, supported by Rolex as Official Timepiece. Held out of Sorrento, the event, which comprised the Regata dei Tre Golfi offshore race followed by four days of windward-leeward and coastal racing, including yesterday's popular lap of Capri, was organised by Circolo del Remo e della Vela Italia (CRVI) and supported by Loro Piana.

Having taken the lead overall in the 20 boat fleet, Hap Fauth's Bella Mente stormed off the start into an early lead and never looked back. While the three Wallycentos should have had the upper hand, the nimble 74ft pure racer kept her nose ahead of Wallycentos V and Galateia to win the final race and the IMA Maxi Europeans title. Former Maxi 72s owned the podium with Sir Peter Ogden's 77ft Jethou a worthy second, six points behind Bella Mente and the defending champion, Peter Dubens' North Star third.

Having won the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup last September, the IMA Maxi European this week, Fauth is hoping to make it a triple if his American Magic successfully challenges for the America's Cup in Barcelona this October. At the prizegiving Fauth was also awarded the prize for finishing top IMA member. -- James Boyd/International Maxi Association

Atlantic Cup: Battle to the Newport Finish Line
The racing has been extremely close in the first two days of the Charleston-Newport leg of the Atlantic Cup. Until 9pm ET last night seven of the eight teams were within just a few miles of each other.

While the teams spent much of yesterday in light air, they were still receiving a nice push from the Gulf Stream. Last night, after a lot of thunderstorms, the breeze has filled in and all teams are now launched for Newport with the French team Everial and Italian team Acrobatica pulling ahead in a very close battle for first!

With their current speeds between 12 and 15 knots, an early morning Tuesday arrival is expected for the first finishers. The race will finish just off Fort Adams and the teams will then proceed to Safe Harbor Newport Shipyard where they will be docked for the remainder of the week.

Fans are encouraged to come out on land or water to cheer on the finishers as they arrive. Race tracking updates every 15-minutes and will switch to every 5-minutes once the teams are 10 nautical miles out.

Can the world's best ball bearing, overhead dinghy storage systems come from Pewaukee too? Yes! Lift. Launch. Harken Hoister.
Harken Hoister Over the last few weeks in Pewaukee, it's been time to free the boats we've had stashed up in our rafters. It's 'Hoister season'--the best time in the whole year to demonstrate what's best about the Harken Hoister. Hoister's whole mission is to shorten the time between where you store that Opti, ILCA, 420, Topper or___ and where you sail it.

Every Hoister is engineered to make lifting and launching a one-person, one line operation. Hoisters come with 100% low-friction Harken ball bearing blocks. Because each unit's mechanical advantage and line lengths are matched to the size and weight of your boat, Hoisters make raising and lowering no big deal. Pull that single line. Watch how bow-to-stern trim remains horizontally…horizontal. Even better, a patented auto cleat ensures everything stops right there—if someone should inadvertently, or perhaps even carelessly RELEASE that line.

You say you're still using that perfectly good set of jib sheets from the '77 European Championships for seasonal tie-up? What if we told you that we're pricing Harken Hoisters lower than their 2023 levels? Would that help? Get one right now, in the Shop/Hoister/Watercraft section of your favorite Harken website.

Cup Spy May 24: Italians sail their AC75 for the first time off Barcelona
Italian Challenger Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli made their grand entrance onto the 2024 America's Cup stage in Barcelona, today, sailing a three hour session in moderate winds, without incident.

The Swiss, and US teams also sailed their AC75s off Barcelona - also without incident, which in Auckland the Kiwis wrapped up their Youth and Womens team training in winds gusting to 20kts. The frenetic training session, ended without incident, however one of the AC40s blew the clew of an old LEQ12 mainsail during the sail back to base.

What happened in the Cup - May 24, 2024:

- Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli sailed for the first time off Barcelona - without incident - encountering conditions which co-helm Francesco Bruni said was different from that experienced off Cagliari. A question for the coming days will be how different, given the Italians have spent very little time sailing out of Barcelona in this America's Cup cycle.

- Orient Express Racing Team: Revealed their AC75 raceboat, outside their Barcelona base. It is to a base design supplied by Emirates Team New Zealand. A launch date has yet to be publicly advised.

- Alinghi Red Bull Racing put in a solid four hour on the water session which appeared to be completed without incident. They sailed with the same rudder that was damaged in the UFO strike yesterday, with skipper Arnaud Psarofaghis dismissing the damage as being minor.

- Emirates Team New Zealand continued with their week-long training block for Youth and Womens America's Cup squads. After losing Thursday due to a lack of wind, an offshore breeze cracked in on Friday, testing the Women's and Youth crews in a frenetic match racing session. They blew the clew out of an old LEQ12 mainsail on the way back to base. Emirates Team New Zealand's AC75 is in the process of being shipped to Barcelona. It left NZ on Tuesday afternoon and will go through the Panama Canal en route to Spain.

- American Magic put in an six hour on the water session off Barcelona in winds reported to be up to 15kts and seas of over a metre. There were no reported issues with the AC75, today. After having a crack against INEOS Britannia, yesterday, today the US team had a look at the Italian Challenger Luna Rossa, out for its first sail off Barcelona.

- INEOS Britannia did not sail as stated after yesterdays' session and will not be back off Barcelona until Monday.

A boat for all ages - Melges 15
Melges 15 The spectacular success of the Melges 15 already extends way beyond its obvious appeal to young racers...

Melges Performance Sailboats has always been a family-run company, so it's hardly surprising that their latest design, the Melges 15, is drawing together sailors of all generations for some family-centric competition. Here's one example: at a recent regatta, the first race was won by Dana Haig and her father/crew - just ahead of her sister Emily and Zoe Fisher. Crossing the line in third were Claudia and John Bartlett, the eventual winners of both the Grand Masters (age 60-69) and Couples trophies.

Like its still-thriving patriarch the Melges 24, the Melges 15 was designed by Reichel/Pugh and won Sailing World's Boat of the Year shortly after its initial launch. This two-person dinghy incorporates many lessons learned over the past three decades. Maximum beam carries well aft along lengthy hard chines that both maximise stability and promote planing. The high boom, ergonomic cockpit and light sheet loads create a package that's easy and fun - at any stage in life

Who Are The Favorites
The last transatlantic race before the Vendee Globe, the New York Vendee - Les Sables d'Olonne, which will start this Wednesday, promises to be particularly competitive. There is no shortage of favorites, as are contenders for places of honor. State of play.

From Tuesday, the skippers will leave their respective marinas and set sail. Direction the starting line which is located equidistant from New York and Newport, 90 miles. At 2 p.m. (local time), 8 p.m. (French time) on May 29, it will be the starting point and the big explanation. 3,200 miles are on the program until the finish in Les Sables d'Olonne and the race promises to be fiercely contested. "All the top seeds are present," rejoices Charlie Dalin (MACIF Sante Prevoyance).

All eyes are also on Yoann Richomme (Paprec Arkea), winner of the last two transatlantic races (Retour à la Base and The Transat CIC). Above all, he aspires to "fix the development of the boat" even if he announces "a hell of a competition". "You have to expect it to be tight," he says. "It can come down to small shifts, the ability to maintain a high tempo when conditions get tough." Charlie Dalin talks about the importance of the "psychological match". "We can see who is in good shape, who is there," says the MACIF Sante Prevoyance skipper. If there is an ascendant to be found, so much the better! »

Beyond the gang of five - Jeremie Beyou, Charlie Dalin, Sam Goodchild, Yoann Richomme, Thomas Rettant - there is no shortage of outsiders. In fact, almost half of the fleet can claim to be in the top 10! Boris Herrmann (Malizia - Seaexplorer) and Sam Davies (Initiatives Cœur), impressive during The Transat by finishing 2nd and 3rd respectively, can once again claim to play the leading roles. Justine Mettraux (Teamwork-Team Snef), daring during the last Transat Jacques Vabre, tested her new foils during the previous race and aspires to let the horses go.

California Offshore Racing Series
The 2024 California Offshore Race Week (CORW) is here. The series includes three separate races down the coast from San Francisco to San Diego. The first leg starts off with the Spinnaker Cup, San Francisco to Monterey (84 nm), then the Coastal Cup from Monterey to Santa Barbara (205 nm), and finally the SoCal 300 from Santa Barbara to San Diego (255 nm).

In 2023, the CORW saw the smallest boat in the fleet, Marc-Andrea Klimaschewski's Dogpatch 26 Moonshine, achieve an impressive overall victory. Klimaschewski and his crew, representing the Pacific Northwest, navigated challenging conditions and enjoyed the thrill of the SoCal 300 segment. The event also highlighted notable performances from other competitors, including the Express 37s dominating the Spinnaker Cup and the MOD 70s in the CA 500 race.

Nine teams are set to race the full week long series in two classes split by boat size and ORR ratings including last year's overall series winner Moonshine. Veteran of the Offshore Race Week Series and past overall winner is Dave MacEwen and his Lucky Duck team (2018 overall winner in the Santa Cruz 52 Lucky Duck). MacEwen has moved on to a Rogers 46 in recent years and has raced in just about every CORW since its inception. The Rogers 46 will race in Class A, featuring a TP52, Santa Cruz 52 and dueling J/125s who seem to be always competitive in this series.

Class B will line up a Santa Cruz 37 (Wildcard), J/133 (Bacchanal), Dogpatch 26 (Moonshine), and the doublehanded Moore 24 (Oxymoron).

Sailing "World on Water"
With 6 months to go before the start of its 10th edition, the Vondee Globe is making an American aside! The last qualifying and selection race for the solo round the world race, the New York Vendee Los Sabb d'lonne, will set sail on 29 May, at 20 hundred French time. The Vondee Globe is a single-handed, non-stop, non-assisted round-the-world sailing race, that takes place every four years. It is contested on Imoca foiling and non-foiling monohulls, which are 18 metres or 60 feet long.

We have waited a while to see it, but Barcelona delivered a solid 17 to 20 knots of south-south-westerly breeze, and gave New York Yacht Club, American Magic, the only team out on the water on Monday, the chance to open the throttles and show the outrageous performance of a new-gen A C 75, in all its glory. It was almost impossible for the recon teams to keep up, such were the speeds being generated, but what a fabulous spectacle, and one that every fan will want to see come the racing for the Louis Vuitton 37th America's Cup.

In this video Pip Hare of Medallia, shares an insight into life onboard an Imoca at night, and the equipment used to help her navigate during the race.

Orient Express Showcase Stunning Design and Livery
Orient Express Racing Team, the charismatic French challenger for the Louis Vuitton 37th America's Cup, today unveiled the boat that all of France hopes will finally deliver victory to this sailing-mad nation. And what a sight she was, with a classy royal blue livery and a hull-form very similar to her effective sister-ship 'Taihoro' of Emirates Team New Zealand.

Liveried in royal blue and with a stylish thin gold stripe weaving its way from the bow to the stern, the new French boat sported white logo-ed foil arms with all black foil stocks and blades. Perhaps because of the single colour finish, it was hard to see if the bow included the slight step near the waterline which is so noticeable on the Kiwi boat - although comments from the team suggested that it does. Our 90-degree starboard side view did not give much indication of the stern profile.

The port foil stock, and wing were confirmed by the team as being legacy components from Emirates Team New Zealand. An elliptical wing with turned-up tips was mounted aft of a long large-form-factor bulb. As well as a narrower foil stock, an all-new elliptical foil on the starboard side (with turned up tips) was mounted aft on a short, small form-factor bulb with very little protrusion forward of the foil stock.

As seen previously on the Kiwi AC75 the French boat has a pronounced full-length bustle that appeared to match its New Zealand sistership. Although impossible to observe from the ground, we were told the deck is painted all white for the purpose of heat reflection from the Mediterranean summer sun.
