Normandy Match Cup Le Havre, Normandy, France: New Zealand's Megan Thomson and her 2.0 Racing crew of Maeve White, Josi Andres, Charlotte Porter and Rose Garcia Royo yesterday won the 2024 Normandy Match Cup in Le Havre, France, the third stage of the 2024 Women's World Match Racing Tour. Thomson beat defending event champion Pauline Courtois (FRA)/ Match in Pink 2-0 in the finals.

Le Havre turned on the breeze and the waves for the final day as the event concluded the semi-final stage and moved into the first-to-two points final.

Earlier in the day, both finalists Thomson and Courtois had to fight for their slot in the final as both their semi-final matches (Thomson v France's Kenza Coutard, and Courtois v the Netherlands' Julia Aartsen) levelled at 2-2 with a decider race in each match for the first-to-three points.

Courtois' Match in Pink - Normandy Elite team are no strangers to the final at the Normandy Match Cup as previous back-to-back winners of the event in 2022 and 2023.

In the petit-final, France's Kenza Coutard/ Speedmeute beat Julia Aartsen (NED)/ Team Out of the Box to secure the 3rd place podium finish, with Aartsen in 4th.

The Women's World Match Tour next moves to Sweden at the Nordea Women's Trophy - Match Cup Sweden from 1-6 July on the Island of Marstrand.

Smaller maxis endure storm en route to Regata dei Tre Golfi victory
Regata dei Tre Golfi winner for a second time - Guiseppe Puttini's well sailed, immaculate Swan 65 ketch Shirlaf. Click on image to enlarge.

Regata dei Tre Golfi The Regata dei Tre Golfi, supported by Rolex as Official Timepiece and which started from Naples on Friday, saw the upper half of the 25-boat maxi fleet suffer from repeated hold-ups, calms and transitions. Behind, the smaller slower entries enjoyed more continuous breeze. As a result Class 4 boats filled the top six places under IRC corrected time. Ultimately the slowest, Giuseppe Puttini's 48-year-old Swan 65 ketch Shirlaf, won this year's 69th Regata dei Tre Golfi ahead of Luca Scoppa's Dehler 60 Blue Oyster and Vincenzo Addessi's Mylius 18E35 Fra'Diavolo.

Starting and finishing this year in Naples, the 156 mile race was the first of the International Maxi Association's IMA Maxi European Championship, organised by the Circolo del Remo e della Vela Italia (CRVI). This Championship, also supported by Loro Piana, continues with four days of inshore and coastal racing from Monday to Thursday (20-23 May).

This was the second time the local Swan 65 has won this event, following her 2021 victory. While she may be approaching her half century, Shirlaf is immaculately maintained and combines original equipment, like mast-mounted halyard winches, with modern gear like her sails and bowsprit. Her crew is mostly Neapolitan with the exception of their sole professional, Sicilian tactician Gabriele Bruni (brother of Luna Rossa Pirelli Prada helmsman Francesco) - who coached the Italian Nacra 17 team to Olympic gold in Tokyo. -- Boyd/International Maxi Association

5 Minute Warning #4
This week PlanetSail's Matt Sheahan tracks down Sailjuice's Andy Rice to a beach in Hyères, south of France, for the Formula Kite World Championships. It's the last big event for the kiteboarders before they make their Olympic debut in Marseille.

Last week Andy saw the Italians Ruggero Tita and Caterina Banti win their fourth Nacra 17 world title as they build up to their Olympic title defence. Tita is also part of Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli who Matt has been following in the frenetic build-up to this autumn's America's Cup. Can Tita really win a gold medal and the America's Cup all in one year?

Matt has also been looking closely at the progress of American Magic and the young team on Alinghi Red Bull Racing who have made huge foiling strides in the past year.

And a catch-up with offshore veteran Sam Goodchild has helped Matt understand more about why there was a slightly unexpected podium of top finishers at the Transat CIC which finished recently in New York...

Less than 60 days to the AEGEAN 600

Aegean 600 It is now less than 60 days to the 7 July start of the 2024 AEGEAN 600, the annual offshore race organized by the Hellenic Offshore Racing Club in conjunction with Olympic Marine. This spectacular 605-mile race starts at Cape Sounio under the watchful gaze of the ancient Temple of Poseidon for a scenic tour of 23 islands of the Aegean archipelago before finishing back at Cape Sounio.

Among the offshore racing world's classic 600-mile races, this is the newest, with the first edition held in 2021. Since then the event's popularity has grown every year, with already 60 monohull and multihull entries from 18 nations planning to participate in this year's 4th edition, a figure that is on its way to a new record turnout with the entry deadline still a few weeks away on 30 April.

These entries represent a large cross-section of the offshore sailing world, ranging in size from Jerry Petratos and Evi Delidou's double-handed Dehler 30 AETHER to George Procopiou's Volvo Open 70, ex-I LOVE POLAND, last year's runner-up elapsed time champion. Teams also range from amateur crews racing for fun to all-pro squads in search of elapsed time course records and corrected time victories in IRC and/or ORC scoring.

In this latter category are two successful international teams making their AEGEAN 600 debut: Austrian Stefan Jentzsch's Botin water-ballasted Botin 56 BLACK PEARL and American Jason Carroll's MOD 70 trimaran ARGO. Both have proven track records and highly-experienced crews that are regular competitors in the world's most competitive ocean races.

"The challenge of this course is precisely why we are coming," said ARGO project manager Chad Corning. "That and we have heard this is a fantastic race, a very cool course and a must-do on the global circuit."

Cup Spy : Impressive sailing session for two AC75 teams
Two teams (USA and GBR) sailed AC75s on Friday out of Barcelona, on a day blessed with a good solid sailing breeze ETNZ sailed both their AC40s in contested training for all three sailing squads - Womens, Youth and Defence.

It was an ideal foiling breeze in Barcelona, but with an off-axis seastate.

What happened in the Cup - May 17, 2024:

- INEOS Britannia sailed in their AC75 - completing a four and a half session achieving some good dry foiling tacks (33/36) and had a perfect record 26/26 on foiling gybes. So far with their new AC75, the Brits are having a dream run, and look to have put the issues of the 2017 and 2021 Cups behind them, as well as a stutter-start to the current cycle.

- Emirates Team New Zealand continued to train in the AC40s with three sailing squads - Defence, Youth and Womens switching around the two AC40. The experience level within the squads on the water today varied from sailors who had won two America's Cups to those having their first ever sail in a foining monohull. ETNZ's AC 75 has been decommissioned and is in the process of being shipped to Barcelona.

- American Magic sailed their AC75 in an intense five hour session, involving 80 tacks/gybes with a 95% dry foiling percentage. While conditions were ideal for foiling, but there was some residual swell from 180 degres. The wind angle was recorded at 045-060 degrees. The US team had an early start and were back on the dock just after mid-day having sailed for just under five hours.

- Alinghi Red Bull Racing did not sail.

- Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli have decommissioned their AC75 in preparation for relocation to the team's America's Cup base in Barcelona.

- Orient Express Racing Team: Were on the water sailing in One Design mode in their AC40. Their AC75 is in Barcelona however a launch date has yet to be publicly advised.

INEOS Britannia christens AC75 race boat "Britannia"
Barcelona, Spain: INEOS Britannia, the British Challenger of Record racing for the Royal Yacht Squadron Ltd in the 37th America's Cup, has christened its AC75 race boat "Britannia" at an official naming ceremony in Barcelona. The event was led by INEOS Chairman Sir Jim Ratcliffe, and INEOS Britannia CEO and Skipper Sir Ben Ainslie.

Julia Ratcliffe and Romane Polli, the daughters of Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his partner Catherine Polli, who are both 16 years old, were appointed the godmothers of Britannia and christened the boat by spraying Nyetimber's English sparkling wine on the bow.

The name Britannia was chosen by Sir Jim in homage to one of Britain's most famous racing yachts. Built in 1893 for King Edward VII, King George V took ownership of Britannia in her later years and converted her into a J Class racing yacht where she became a formidable force on water, with her lifetime record consisting of 231 race wins and 129 further podiums.

INEOS Britannia is the first British team to compete in three consecutive America's Cups since 1903, and the current Britannia is the third America's Cup race boat for the British team; which was the reasoning behind her previous code name "RB3". She follows her AC75 predecessor of the same moniker that was raced in the 36th America's Cup in Auckland, New Zealand in 2021.

This week marked 100 days until racing begins at the 37th America', INEOS Britannia is currently busy testing AC75 'Britannia' ahead of the Barcelona Preliminary Regatta on 22-25 August, where all six teams will race their AC75s against each other for the first time. The five challenging teams will then battle it out in The Louis Vuitton Cup (Challenger Selections Series 29 Aug – 7 Oct) to win the right to take on Defender Emirates Team New Zealand in the Louis Vuitton 37th America's Cup match (12-27 October).

The America's Cup racing period will also see the return of the Youth America's Cup and the first ever PUIG Women's America's Cup event, a groundbreaking moment for the sport of sailing, with Britain represented in both events by Athena Pathway Programme, a team launched by Sir Ben Ainslie and Hannah Mills OBE, the most successful female Olympic sailor of all time.

Orcas Sink Yacht in Strait of Gibraltar in Latest of Spate of Incidents Since 2020
A sailing yacht has been sunk in the Strait of Gibraltar in the latest of a spate of incidents involving orcas in the region.

According to RTE News, the 15-metre yacht Alboran Cognac was rammed by the cetaceans on Sunday morning (12 May) and began to take on water.

The yacht's two occupants were rescued by a nearby oil tanker in waters off Morocco and the yacht was left adrift before it eventually sank.

It marks the latest in a lengthy series of interactions between the so-called "Gladis" pod of Iberian orcas and sailing vessels dating back to early 2020.

International Etchells Class Bedrock Trophy Regatta
The second event of the UK Etchells fleet saw a fleet of 10 boats gather for the Bedrock Trophy run by the Royal Southern Yacht Club. Once again there was a great turn out from the 7 youth teams.

Similarly to the last Etchells regatta, the Sunday saw excellent, consistent and stable breeze. 10 knots from the South East established and 4 races were run. A dominant day from Man's Best Friend saw them taking a further 2 bullets and a 2nd and a 3rd to win the overall series. Tom Hough's Louise Racing took the only other two 1st places of the day to finish in second place.

3rd place and 1st Corinthian was Rob Goddard and 1st Youth boat was Harry Cowell's Alison- both with frequent top 5 finishes. The next 4 places were filled with youth boats- Astrid, Sumo, Ziggy and Palaver- all with an impressive number of top 5 finishes.

The next event is the 3 day Sir Kenneth Preston Trophy over the May Bank holiday weekend.
