Women's America's Cup Swedish Challenge, powered by Artemis Technologies, has announced the six sailors who will form the Swedish Challenge Women's Team and compete in the 37th America's Cup on October 5 in Barcelona.

Among them is Olympic hopeful Vilma Bobeck from Stockholm:

"It has always been a big dream to do both the Olympics and the America's Cup, and to do both in the same year is very cool," said Bobeck. "It will be fun to see what doors can be opened for women in the sport."

Alongside Bobeck, the women's team includes: Felicia Fernstrom, Ida Svensson, Julia Gross, Lovisa Karlsson (another Olympic hopeful) and Rebecca Netzler. Each of these talented sailors brings a unique set of skills and experience, united by their dedication to sailing and desire to reach the highest level in their sport.

The 37th America's Cup is a historic event, featuring a women's class for the first time it marks a significant step forward for gender equality in sailing

The Swedish Challenge sailors have been training at Artemis Technologies' base in Belfast, with Belfast Lough providing the ideal training ground for their AC40 yacht.

The final team has been selected from the esteemed Artemis Academy, an initiative designed to foster top-level Swedish foiling athletes. This comprehensive programme is led by Team Manager Sarah Gundersen and Head Coaches Fredrik Bergstom and Kyle Langford.

In addition to the women's team, a youth team, who will be announced this Thursday 23 May, will compete in the Youth America's Cup from September 17-26.

Playing The Shifts
Le Havre, Normandy, France: Racing continued into the early evening of Day 3 of the Normandy Match Cup as the semi-finals got underway in a fresh 12-15knots, combined with a challenging current off the Le Havre beach. The semi-final pairings of Pauline Courtois (FRA) v Julia Aartsen (NED), and Megan Thomson (NZL) v Kenza Coutard (FRA) each finished their matches levelled at 1-1 in some of the closest racing of the event.

A relieved Aartsen and crew were delighted with the result, levelling their score 1-1 with Courtois. "That was a pretty close finish, we didn't know we had made it over the line first but it was great to get the win and in our first semi-final on the Women's World Match Racing Tour too!."

Racing concludes tomorrow with the end of the semi-finals and finals, and a Queen of the castle knockout for 5th-7th places.

How good are your boat parking skills?
OMS We all know that coming alongside or stern to after a day on the water can be stressful. Your crew are tired, your helm is ready for a rest but there is one more task and then you can all step ashore. This is where you need reliability without compromise. This is where you can be thankful for your OMS bow thruster.

OMS Thrusters are custom made, electric or hydraulic powered and can be installed as vertical or swing retracting units. OMS Thrusters are compact, lightweight and leave a completely fair hull.

With an exceptional power to weight ratio as standard, the bar can be raised further for very high-performance applications by using carbon composites and titanium. Our extreme lightweight units can even be designed to be removable for regattas. Significantly lighter than traditional thrusters they offer large grand prix racing yachts protection of their asset in both race and cruise modes.

The OMS range can be seen on performance yachts from 20-80m LOA. Installed by world leading yacht builders, we appreciate that choosing the right lightweight or removable thruster can enhance to your boat's performance.

Top Competitors Return for Second Edition of Women's Championship
Newport, R.I.: The second edition of the New York Yacht Club Women's Championship will feature 20 teams of four or five women from across the United States sailing in provided one-design Sonar keelboats. The regatta is scheduled for Friday, June 28, through Sunday, June 30, and will be sailed out of the New York Yacht Club Harbour Court in Newport, R.I. The winning team will receive the Joan H. Towse Trophy, named for the passionate sailor, race committee member and late wife of former New York Yacht Club Commodore Robert C. Towse Jr.

Also returning for the second edition of the Women's Championship is 2022 runner-up Erin Maxwell (at left) and her team. The former 470 world champion built quite a resume through collegiate sailing and multiple Olympic campaigns, but sailing has taken a back seat to professional and family responsibilities of late. The team's name in 2022, 11 Less Distractions, referenced the four sailors' combined number of children.

Racing in the second edition of the biennial Women's Championship will start on Narragansett Bay between Rose and Goat islands at 11 am on Friday, June 28, and run through Sunday afternoon. Awards and social events will be held at the New York Yacht Club Harbour Court. -- Stuart Streuli

Good for all - Zhik
Zhik The use of naturally sourced rubber has allowed a remarkable step up in the sustainable manufacturing of technical clothing

High performance on the racecourse can come at a high cost to the environment, but Zhik's new range of X wetsuits are performance-enhancing whilst being the least environmentally impactful yet seen in the sailing market.

The new X range of wetsuits aims to deliver a higher level of comfort, mobility, warmth, and all-round athletic performance than previous editions, while significantly reducing environmental impact. This is because Zhik has become the first manufacturer of sailing wetsuits to build its garments from Yulex natural rubber rather than traditional neoprene construction.

Sailing "World on Water"
Winning the Class 40 Transat CIC, Ambrogio Beccaria, said that it was an incredibly close race, with lots of twists and turns.

It was not often you win two Transatlantic races in six months, and this is the first solo race that I have won on the boat, that is very, very important to me. And this is one of the best races I have ever done. A lot of the time it is about pain and suffering, this time I was very, very aware all the time of what I was doing, and everything worked very, very well.

In Cagliari it was a slightly more overcast affair, with a dynamic weather system over the Bay of Angels, and the constant threat of rain showers. A shifting wind that gradually built to 12 knots but averaged 10 knots, was more than enough for Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli to rifle through their standard training drills over a near four-hour afternoon training session, but the introduction of marks, and a virtual starting box, indicated a whole new shift in direction.

Cup Spy : Self-starts still a work-on for teams
The US and British teams sailed on Thursday off Barcelona on a day that was not hugely productive in actual sailing time compared to time on the water. The issue lay in a storm - with thunder and lightning - that never really hit the teams, but did take out the breeze that existed at the start of the session.

Both teams sailed 20 minute legs without being able to generate the grunt to pop free from an off axis seaway. The sea state is blamed for the AC75s being unable to self-start foiling - when they were impressive in flat water and lighter winds on Wednesday.

What happened in the Cup - May 16, 2024:

- INEOS Britannia sailed today in their AC75 - completing a five hour session which resulted in just 40 minutes foiling time.

- American Magic repaired their jib sheet issue from Wednesday. They were on the water for two hours less than the Brits, but got a similar amount of foiling time.

- Alinghi Red Bull Racing did not sail.

- Emirates Team New Zealand did not sail in the AC40s. Their AC75 is decommissioned and in the process of being shipped to Barcelona.

- Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli have decommissioned their AC75 in preparation for relocation to the team's America's Cup base in Barcelona.

- Orient Express Racing Team: Were on the water sailing in One Design mode in their AC40. Their AC75 is in Barcelona however a launch date has yet to be publicly advised.

Clarisse Cremer crosses the finish line of The Transat CIC after 20 days
On May 19 at 20d 12h 38min, after 20 days since the start of The Transat CIC, Clarisse Cremer finally crossed the finish line of this legendary race.

Despite a technical stopover in the Azores to repair her boat in the middle of the race, Clarisse successfully completed this Atlantic crossing. This race is a significant milestone for Clarisse as she aims to qualify for the next Vendee Globe in 2024.

She adds 2,950 miles to her tally, supporting her qualification for the Vendee Globe. These miles earned during this event will count towards her "race for miles" to secure a spot on the starting line of the solo round-the-world race.

The Oak Double Bay - 4 Pines +
The Oak, skippered by Alex Marinelli in 2022-23. Photo by Frank Quealey The Oak One of the real highlights of the Australian 18 Footer League's 2023-24 Sydney Harbour season was the outstanding performance of the young, rookie team on The Oak Double Bay-4 Pines from the opening Spring Championship series in October until the JJ Giltinan Championship in March.

Skippered by the then 16-year-old The Scots College student Jacob Marks, with former skipper Alex Marinelli on the sheet and Matt Doyle in the bow, The Oak Double Bay-4 Pines won the six-race Spring Championship series by one point from John Winning's Yandoo with Fisher & Paykel (Jordan Girdis) a further two points back.

In the JJ Giltinan (World) Championship, competing in a 27-boat fleet of experienced teams from five countries, the young team finished 12th after recording seven top-10 placings in the nine-race regatta. In the final race of the championship, the team actually led the fleet to within 100 metres of the weather mark after the long North-East leg from Clark Island to the Beashel Buoy.

This is a young team with obvious talent and, given the right opportunity, will have a good future in the class and be a top performer in the Australian 18 Footers League's fleet on Sydney Harbour.

Anyone wanting to look at the team's performances during the 2023-24 season, video coverage of all the action from the Winnings 2024 JJ Giltinan Championship plus all the club's racing throughout the entire Australian 18 Footers League's 2023-24 season, which is available here -- Frank Quealey, Australian 18 Footers League Ltd.
