WHAT The Yandoo team of Micah Lane, Fang Warren and Lewis Brake became the Winnings 2024 JJ Giltinan world 18ft skiff champions today on Sydney Harbour after scoring a brilliant win in the final race of what has been one of the best championship regattas in the events 86-year history.

Yandoo went into today's race with a two points lead over their nearest rival, Rag & Famish Hotel, needing to finish within the top two placings in the race to win the title.

In a 10-12knot North-East breeze, all leading teams elected to use their smaller #2 igs for the long three-lap course, which was a perfect test to decide the best 18ft skiff team of 2024 in the world.

At the end of the race Yandoo took the honours by 1m4s from Finport Finance (Keagan York, Matt Stenta, Phil Marshall), with Andoo (Joel Beashel, Seve Jarvin and Sam Newton) a further 13s back in third place.

Balmain (Henry Larkings) was fourth, followed by Germany's Black Knight (Heinrich Von Bayern), New Zealand's ASCC (Eli Liefting), Vaikobi (Kirk Mitchell), Rag & Famish Hotel (Harry Price), The Oak Double Bay-4 Pines (Jacob Marks) and Marine Outlet (John Cooley).

Yandoo finished the championship with a total of 14 points, ahead of Rag & Famish Hotel (Harry Price, Josh McKnight and Finn Rodowicz) on 22 points, Andoo (John Winning Jr, Seve Jarvin and Sam Newton) on 23, Finport Finance 39, Black Knight 52, ASCC 53, Balmain 61, Queensland's Big Foot Bags and Covers (Dave Hayter) 64, Lazarus (Tom Cunich) 65, Marine Outlet 71, Vaikobi 71 and The Oak-Double By-4 Pines on 76.

The final race showdown between Yandoo and The Rag was quickly dashed when the Yandoo team opened up a break over The Rag shortly after the start.

France claims first ever 49er world title and Dutch reclaim FX crown
Erwan Fischer and Clement Pequin (FRA) won France's first ever 49er world title on the final day of the 49er and 49erFX World Championships in Lanzarote. Odile van Aanholt and Annette Duetz (NED) reclaimed the 49erFX world title for The Netherlands.

The final day brought lighter breezes but still sufficient for twin trapezing up and down the two-lap race course.

The Dutch team van Aanholt and Duetz had a chance to wrap up the world title in the last Gold Fleet race, held in the morning. However things didn't go quite to plan as they could only manage 17th place, their worst result of the Championship. The Swedes still had a shot at taking gold for the second year running.

No such problems for Erwan Fischer and Clement Pequin in the men's 49er who high-fived and hugged as they crossed the finish line of the Gold Fleet race in first place. They had won the regatta with a race to spare and become the first ever French team to win the 49er World Championship.

In the afternoon FX Medal Race, the Dutch took the upper hand over their Swedish training partners and van Aanholt and Duetz swept across the finish line to claim back the world title they last held in Canada two years earlier.

Lanzarote and Marina Rubicon delivered a stunning playing field for the six days of competition. The competition is hotting up in advance of the Olympic Regatta this July with a number of big regattas on the schedule including the European Championships in La Grande Motte in the south of France in May. -- Andy Rice

GORI Propeller - Have you got the need for speed?
GORI Propeller It's the small incremental advances we make to a yacht that when combined bring formidable results. Whether that be breaking records, looking for a race win, or simply finding that smooth ride, it's time to look below your waterline.

When you are looking to break sailing records - choose a GORI Propeller as that's what some of the fastest sailors in the world choose. From the intricately designed aquadynamic shape and the ingenious folding mechanism to the precision engineering. One Design racing yachts right up to the IMOCA's and Ultim trimarans use a propeller that's whole design and function is geared to speed, serious sailors choose the GORI Racing Propeller.

When looking to improve performance - choose a GORI Propeller as less drag means greater efficiency. GORI Propellers have by far the lowest drag propeller whilst sailing with many yards fitting them as standard. Remember you can always retrofit a GORI Propeller.

When life is about the journey not the destination - choose a GORI Propeller. They offer by far the smoothest propeller based on proven design and engineering with the best manoeuvrability. So, if you want to get to your destination for sundowners and not spill your G&T on the way, choose GORI Propeller.

The whole is greater than the sum of the parts. Find out more on the GORI Propeller Range - gori-propeller.com

Anthony Marchand (Actual Ultim 3) finishes fourth on the ARKEA ULTIM CHALLENGE - Brest

Anthony Marchand French solo skipper Anthony Marchand took fourth place on the ARKEA ULTIM CHALLENGE - Brest this afternoon when he sailed the ULTIM Actual Ultim 3 across the finish line off Brest at 14:08:21hrs UTC.

Marchand, who turned 39 years old during this first ever solo multihull race round the world, had to stop twice to make technical repairs, once in Cape Town after losing his port foil and in Dunedin, NZ because of problems with his starboard foil mechanism. Racing the ULTIM which as Francois Gabart's Macif holds the world record for the fastest solo passage round the world, Marchand was deprived of the use of the foils and had adapt to achieve the best performance possible.

In the space of less than two years, 'Antho' has transitioned impressively from being a top competitor in the solo Figaro one design offshore class to first racing half way around the world on the IMOCA Biotherm on The Ocean Race and now completing this solo ULTIM race in an elapsed time of 64 days 1 hour 38 minutes 21 seconds. He finishes 13d 6h 20m after race winner Charles Caudrelier.

Anthony Marchand's race in numbers:
Date and finishing time: Monday 11th March / 15:08:21hrs
Elapsed time: 64d 1hr 38m 21s
Miles sailed: 29 948,03 milles
Real average speed: 19.48kts

Cup Spy March 6: Multiple Cup winner, Glenn Ashby works with Orient Express Racing
Three times America's Cup winner, Glenn Ashby appeared on the Orient Express Racing Team coach boat off Barcelona, this week.

Described by the AC37 Joint Recon Team as an "External Consultant" who has been with the team for the past three days. Ashby was a coach for Oracle Racing the winning 2010 America's Cup team, and then switched to Emirates Team New Zealand for the 2013, 2017 and 2021 America's Cups. He was mainsail/wingsail trimmer in the winning 2017 and 2021 America's Cups.

In the current America's Cup cycle, the Olympic silver medalist and multiple world A-class champion was the "pilot" of Emirates Team New Zealand's world landspeed sailing record land yacht setting a new record of 225.58km/h (140.17mph) at Lake Gairdner, South Australia, in April 2023.

In the interview below, the professional sailmaker says that his current role is "very much a sort of a helicopter view from the outside, if you like, looking inside the team"

What happened in the Cup - March 6, 2024:

- INEOS Britannia - launched and attempted to sail but were thwarted by the light winds in Barcelona.

- Alinghi Red Bull Racing: Left the harbour hoping to train, but the breeze was a no-show, well not in the strength required. The session turned into a opportunity for the bigger team to have a look inside the boat, and try out some of the crew positions. Their AC75 race boat arrived on Monday, the stated launch date is not before April 5.

- Emirates Team New Zealand - The Kiwis sailed today in a building gusty offshore breeze that hit 18kts and consistently gusted over 20kts - with flat water - ideal for testing top end speed and cavitation. ETNZ's AC75 raceboat is nearing completion and the team is one of four who have notified an April launch date.

- American Magic - The US team cracked the port topside of America on Monday during two boat training, and the trained only with Magic yesterday, and did not go on the water today, Wednesday.

- Orient Express Racing Team - Sailed for the third successive day on Wednesday. Today three times America's Cup winner Glenn Ashby was on the water with the team - explaining his role as having a "helicopter view from the outside" over all aspects of the AC75, and getting the French crew up to speed.

- Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli - The Italian team have retired their LEQ12 test boat, which has served the team well. They too have notified an April launch date for their AC75 raceboat.

Clayton Love The widely-mourned death of Clayton Love Jnr of Cork at the age of 94 may leave a void in the lives of his very large circle of family, friends and colleagues in many parts of the world and numerous areas of interest. But our environment - both at sea and on land - has ample evidence of his enduring enthusiasm and effectiveness in creating and nourishing structures - both organisational and in the built environment - which have been of great benefit to many. And his clear-sightedness in advocating projects with the bigger picture in mind, aided when necessary by his patient yet persuasive good humour, has helped development in Irish life at all levels despite the sometimes traumatic events of a lifetime of more than nine decades.

He was making his mark at an early age, for although a key period of his boyhood was to be in and around Cork Harbour while living through the limbo years of Ireland being in "The Emergency" with its neutral state through World War II, it was possible to sail a gradually increasing amount, even if boats had to make do without new sails, and any auxiliary engines were decommissioned.

Despite the limitations, one of his fellow-sailors - the slightly older George Radley - had sailed his family's 30ft Cork Harbour One Design from Cork Harbour to Dublin Bay in 1943 inside the wartime minefields. So in 1944, the 15-year-old Clayton Love and his team responded by sailing his own father's 1898 cutter Tertia the same route to Dun Laoghaire.

Fickle First Week for McIntyre Ocean Globe Race
After what could only be described as a hectic start to Leg 4 of the McIntyre Ocean Globe in Punta del Este on March 5th, things haven't gotten any easier for the OGR fleet. The 13 classic yachts racing around the world to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Whitbread Race was brought back to reality with a windward bang after their long sunny stopover in Punta del Este, Uruguay.

Within minutes of the start in 15, gusting to 25 knots South Westerly headwinds and lumpy 3 - 4 meters swell, Pen Duick VI experienced a man overboard - the crew member recovered within a couple of minutes. Evrika FR (07) and Triana FR (66) collided resulting in Evrika's bowsprit spearing a navigation buoy, Explorer AU (28) got way too close and personal with a port control marker - All that before some crews succumbed to dreaded seasickness thanks to a lumpy messy sea state while others suffered from flu symptoms.

The situation hasn't gotten easier for the 137 sailors racing towards the Cowes Royal Yacht Squadron finish line, over 6500 nm north. After the first five days racing, the fleet was only 560 miles up the rhumb line, but spread out 560 miles line abreast across the rhumb line. 110 MILES A DAY TOWARD THE FINISH IS NOT A FAST START. With no strong South Easterly Trade Winds on the horizon, it looks like frustrating calm headwinds and highly local sailing conditions will continue for the coming week, creating winners and losers for sure. The fleet might well be in for a rude awakening on this final leg. Not because of big seas or storms, but for the clever tactics and sheer patience required to keep moving forward in these upwind, shifty, unpredictable conditions.

Bermuda Gold Cup 72nd edition

Bermuda Gold Cup Hamilton, Bermuda: The Royal Bermuda Yacht Club (RBYC) is delighted to announce the 72nd edition of the Bermuda Gold Cup, a world championship stage of the World Match Racing Tour, to be held October 28 to November 3, 2024, on Hamilton Harbour. For the first time ever, the event will also run concurrently with a new Women's World Match Racing Tour Event during the same week.

The Bermuda Gold Cup returned to the World Match Racing Tour last October and ultimately saw Sweden's Johnie Berntsson and his team raise the King Edward VII Gold Cup for the third time. Planning the dates for this year's event has considered the much anticipated 37th America's Cup, scheduled to conclude by October 20, 2024.

In a first of its kind event in Bermuda, RBYC will this year take on the challenge of running both the Bermuda Gold Cup and the new women's match racing event on the same racecourse, during the week-long spectacle. In order to host two events, the Bermuda Gold Cup format will be 10 teams in a single group. The women's event will invite 8 of the world's top female match racing teams and will be the first ever women's sailing regatta in Bermuda to also award prize money.

Both events will be sailed in the 33-foot International One-Design (IOD) sloop, a 1936 design with long bow and stern overhangs and a keel-hung rudder. The format for the regatta will consist of a round robin, quarterfinal, semifinal, petite final and final rounds.

The King Edward VII Trophy, awarded to the winner of the Bermuda Gold Cup, is the oldest trophy in the world for a competition involving one-design yachts. First presented in 1907 by King Edward VII at the Tri-Centenary Regatta at Jamestown, Va., honoring the 300th anniversary of the first permanent colony in America, the trophy is the only King's Cup ever to be offered for competition in the United States which could be won outright. -- Sean McNeil
