Tears of Relief and Regret at Skiff Worlds
It was a day of mixed and extreme emotions in the boat park this afternoon after the fleet came ashore at the end of a vital third day of Qualifying at the 49er and 49erFX World Championships in Lanzarote.

For some this was perhaps the hardest day they will ever experience in their Olympic sailing career. For some who didn't make it through to Gold Fleet, who find themselves relegated to Silver, it could well spell the end of their dreams of making it to Paris 2024.

There was agony for a number of the men's teams in the 49er Qualifying. Two Irish teams found themselves on either side of the knife edge. In fact one team were right on the knife edge. Rob Dickson and Sean Waddilove had squeaked into Gold Fleet in 25th place, although with a few protests to be heard late into the evening, it was too soon for Irish celebrations. Even tougher, though, for the other Irish team, Seafra Guilfoyle and Johnny Durcan who just missed the cut in a heart-breaking 27th place.

Racing continues with the fleets split into gold and silver for each fleet. There will be live broadcasts of each gold fleet race so be sure to tune in.

Clarisse Cremer cleared by the international jury
After a thorough investigation and several challenging weeks, the international jury of the Vendee Globe 2020/21 has ruled yesterday that the private exchanges between Clarisse and her husband were in compliance with the rules of the Vendee Globe 2020/21 and the Racing Rules of Sailing. Clarisse Cremer, the skipper of L'Occitane en Provence, and her team can now peacefully resume the preparation for the upcoming qualifying races for the Vendee Globe 2024.

This decision was received as a relief by Clarisse and her husband. The skipper and young mother expressed : "Of course, I am relieved by this decision, and I thank the jury for examining our case with impartiality and professionalism. Now that these challenging moments are behind us, the team and I can get back to work to prepare for the Vendee Globe 2024."

This sentiment was echoed by the former Vendee Globe skipper and team mentor, Alex Thomson: "We have weathered this storm together as a team. We have always supported Clarisse, standing by her every day. Clarisse is a person of great integrity, and we were all convinced of that, with the jury's decision serving as proof."

40th Primo Cup-Trophee UBS gets underway in Monaco
Monaco All eyes are on Monaco this weekend, 7-10 March, as it celebrates the 40th Primo Cup-Trophee UBS. Over the years, this regatta has left its mark, attracting big names in sailing and renowned as a testbed for trying out new boats and kit.

Some 90 teams totalling 400 sailors divided into J/70, Smeralda 888, Longtze Premier and Cape 31 have descended on YCM's pontoons, with the Cape 31 class making its debut in its first one design championship. With their asymmetrical spinnakers, these 31-footers take a crew of six and are renowned for being very quick.

This Mediterranean classic has often been the ideal opportunity to discover new classes like SB 20, JOD 35 and Longtze Premier. At sea new ideas have been trialled. They include in the 2000s a course with two leeward marks, different depending on the classes, to improve flow on the leeward buoy passage, and the first prototypes of remotely controlled marker buoys that don't need to be anchored which helps protect the seabed and are now well established.

This year sees a preview of a new one design class conceived in Monaco, an initiative of YCM member Ludovico Fassitelli, winner of the Primo Cup 2019. It aims to modernise the rules of competition, putting the emphasis on technology and accessibility.

The event also coincides with the fourth and final Act of the Monaco Sportsboat Winter Series of monthly regattas that run November-March for J/70s, part of YCM's commitment to promoting year-round competitive sailing and giving sailors a training platform before international events.

The 30-plus-year partnership with technical clothing supplier Slam, alongside UBS, and support from Monaco's City Council, have all contributed to its quality and prestige, as part of YCM's 'Monaco, Capital of Advanced Yachting' approach.

18ft Skiffs Winnings 2024 JJ Giltinan Championship: Race 7

18ft Skiffs An outstanding all-the-way victory to the Rag & Famish Hotel 18ft Skiff team in today's Race 7 on Sydney Harbour has set up an exciting prospect for the weekend's final two races of the Winnings 2024 JJ Giltinan Championship with only four points separating the three leaders in the regatta.

The Rag & Famish Hotel team of Harry Price, Josh McKnight and Finn Rodowicz went hard left out of the start in Athol Bay to grab an 8s lead over the fleet at the windward mark off Clark and were never in any real danger of defeat as they powered around the southerly course to score a 3m21s win over the series leader Yandoo (Micah Lane, Fang Warren and Lewis Brake).

Queensland's Big Foot Bags and Covers team (Dave Hayter, Ben Roxburgh and Elliott Mahar) produced its second great performance in two days to come home in third place, 28s behind Yandoo, after racing in second place for almost the entire course.

Lazarus (Tom Cunich) had been in the top three for two-thirds of the journey before finishing a close fourth, followed by the fast-finishing Finport Finance (Keagan York) and defending champion Andoo (John Winning Jr).

With just two more races to be sailed on the weekend (Race 8 on Saturday and Race 9 on Sunday) Yandoo, with a net score of 10 points, holds a four-point advantage over the equal second-placed Andoo and Rag & Famish Hotel.

Finport Finance is is in fourth place on 32 points, followed by Germany's Black Knight (Heinrich Von Bayern) on 40 , Big Foot Bags and Covers on 43, New Zealand's ASCC (Eli Liefting) 44, Lazarus 46, Balmain 48, Marine Outlet (John Cooley) 50, The Oak Double Bay-4 Pines (Jacob Marks) 57 and Vaikobi (Kirk Mitchell) on 58.

Further race dates for the championship are:
Saturday - March 9, 2024 - Race 8, Big Kite Memorial Trophy
Sunday - March 10, 2024 - Race 9, Ribbon and JJ Giltinan Trophy

Sailing "World on Water" March 08.24
Ahead of the Vendee Globe start in November, is the New York Vondee to LaesSables 'Olonne qualifying race, which sets sail on May 29th. This race is the last meeting for the skippers before the Vendee Globe. The 3,100 mile, (5,741 kilometer) course, takes the sailors on a single-handed transatlantic qualifying race from New York's Manhattan.

Thomas Coville, the French solo skipper of Sodebo Ultim 3, crossed the line off Brest, to finish the ARKeA ULTIM CHALLENGE-Brest last Thursday afternoon, to take second place.

At 55 years of age, the sailor most widely known as 'the recordman', completed the ninth round the world passage of his career, in an elapsed time of 53 days, 1 hour, 12 minutes, 40 seconds.

The Canary Islands are renowned for their breezy northeasterly trade wind conditions, and today Lanzarote fully delivered this, with 20-25 knot winds, and occasional gusts of 30. In this wind, plus the lumpy sea state, playing it safe, and carrying out well executed manoeuvres, was order of the day for the nine teams. After 3 races, it was Team Nika First, Team Ceeref second, and Peninsula Racing third.

Cole Brauer As we get Cruising Compass ready to mail to you on Thursday morning, Cole Brauer, who is striving to become the first American woman to race solo, non-stop around the world, is closing in on A Coruna, Spain, and the Global Solo Challenge's finish line. In a fleet of 14 boats, she is the only woman and she will finish second. On Wednesday, she was hoping to arrive at dawn on Thursday, which is appropriate since her boat is named First Light.

Brauer has become a social media and traditional media phenomenon since she uploads daily posts to her Instagram account via Starlink and has attracted more than 450,000 followers. This has led to a major feature in the New York Times, a three-minute interview on the NBC evening news, a major feature in the USA Today network and more. Cole has become an inspiration to many as she joins the ranks of accomplished women who have proven time and again that competitive offshore sailing is not just for boys, sailors such Dawn Riley, Tracy Edwards, Ellen McArthur, Dee Caffari, Sam Davies and Kirsten Neuschafer, who won the 2023 Golden Globe Race.

Congratulations, Cole. What you are accomplishing is and will be amazing. -- George Day in Cruising Compass, bluewatersailing.com

Pen Duick VI Man Overboard Crew Recovered at Start of McIntyre Ocean Race
At 17:17UTC, March 5th 2024, sailing vessel Maiden UK (03) made a radio call to the Ocean Globe Race control, reporting a Man Overboard from sailing vessel Pen Duick VI FR (14). Just 17 minutes prior to the call both yachts had crossed the start line on Leg 4 of the McIntyre Ocean Globe Race, from Punta Del Este Uruguay to Cowes UK.

The Prefecture was alerted to the call.

Skippered by Marie Tabarly, Pen Duick VI, surrounded by the 12 other yachts in the OGR fleet, stopped at 17:15 UTC, 1.25nm after the start line and .4nm off the headland. They recommenced racing at 17:20 UTC, immediately after the crew member was recovered. Crew onboard Pen Duick VI utilized their MOB recovery system to recover the man overboard, whose identity is still unknown. First mate Tom Napper signaled to Maiden's media support rib that the crew member was OK.

Pen Duick VI, tweeted earlier today (6th March, 2024)
"All crew onboard is ok, just one a bit too eager who needed to cool down a bit. We picked him up very fast and were back ahead of our beloved t9 right after."

Maiden had also launched a horseshoe buoy in the vicinity of Pen Duick VI after hearing the call, this was returned to Maiden by their media support boat shortly after.

OGR race control later requested confirmation of events from all entrants and Spirit of Helsinki FI (71) reconfirmed shortly after the MOB was from Pen Duick VI and the person concerned had been recovered.

The fleet continues on route to Cowes. The first yachts are expected across the Royal Yacht Squadron finish line approx April 9th/10th.
