JJ Giltinan Championship Sydney Harbour: Australian champions Michael Coxon, Aaron Links and Trent Barnabas gave a faultless exhibition in Thurlow Fisher Lawyers to win Race 4 of the Winning Appliances JJ Giltinan 18ft Skiff Championship on Sydney Harbour today.

The win gives the Thurlow Fisher Lawyers team the outright lead in the series on 9 points, three ahead of defending champion Seve Jarvin and his Gotta Love It 7 team of Sam Newton and Scott Babbage.

Second today was Smeg (Nick Press, Dan Phillips and Dave Ewings), which finished 1m20s behind the winner, while Western Australia's SLAM (Grant Rollerson, Anthony Young and Peter Nicholson) was a further 1m5s back in third place.

Overall point scores behind Thurlow Fsiher Lawyers and Gotta Love It 7 are US champion Howie Hamlin and his CST Composites team Fritz Lanzinger and Paul Allen on 18 points, Yandoo (John Winning, Andrew Hay, Dave Gibson) and Red Claw Wines (Matthew Searle, Archie Massey, Mike McKenzie) both on 23 and Smeg on 27.

Today's race was delayer for 1h45m due to a lack of wind, but when the light north east breeze arrived another unpredictable race was on.

On the final windward leg to the Beashel Buoy all teams elected to sail to the northern shore and SLAM gained time to be within striking distance of Smeg, Gotta Love It 7 and CST Composites.

SLAM took a different line to the other three teams competing for the minor placings on the spinnaker run to the wing mark off Shark Island.

The move paid dividends as SLAM cut out Gotta Love It 7 and CST Composites, to finish third behind Thurlow Fisher Lawyers and Smeg.

The LIVE TRACKING is proving to be a great success and if you can't make it onto the water you should follow the racing on:

Sweden's Loof and Salmiren Move Into Lead at Bacardi Cup

Bacardi Cup Miami, Florida, USA: In comparison to the relative calm of Biscayne Bay on day one of the Bacardi Cup, today's sharp increase in wind speed was a welcome change for the 89 teams racing in the headline event of the 2011 BACARDI Miami Sailing Week presented by EFG Bank. High clouds, chop, and an east-southeasterly breeze in the mid-teens propelled the Stars around the 9.5 nautical mile course after an aggressive start saw seven teams pay a penalty with their scores for starting early.

The day's race was won by Guillame Florent and Pascal Rambeau (France), making for three different winners in as many races thus far in the series. Sweden's Fredrik Loof and Max Salmiren continued their consistent form, adding a second-place finish to yesterday's win. Third place went to three-time Bacardi Cup champion Peter Bromby sailing with Lee White (Bermuda).

With the midpoint of the regatta reached, the overall standings continue to reflect a close contest at the top of the fleet.

1. Fredrik Loof / Max Salmiren, SWE, 3 points
2. Guillaume Florent / Pascal Rambeau, FRA, 4
3. Eivind Melleby / Petter Morland Pedersen, NOR, 5
4. Peter O'Leary / David Burones, IRL, 7
5. Mateusz Kusznierewicz / Dominik Zycki, POL, 12
6. Hamish Pepper / Craig Monk, NZL, 13
7. Maciej Grabowski / Lukasz Lesinsk, POL, 14
8. Peter Vessella / Rodney Hagebols, USA, 15
9. Andy Horton / James Lyne, USA, 16
10. Mark Reynolds / Rick Peters, USA, 17
11. Augie Diaz / Bruno Prada, USA/BRA, 18
12. Peter Bromby / Lee White, BER, 22

Racing for the Bacardi Cup resumes Thursday, March 10, and continues through Saturday, March 12.

Groupe Bel Is Expected In Ushuaia This Evening
"It's fantastic, the sun is shining! In the space of a few days, I have turned fifty and become a Cape Horner!" Kito enthused. Wild, hostile, cliffs plunging into the Ocean, snow-capped peaks on the horizon, the rugged coast, the lighthouse keeper's voice over the VHF... There's no mistaking it, this is Cape Horn! He may have sailed many thousands of miles over the course of his life, but Tuesday the 8th of March 2011 was Kito's first time around the Horn! And it is no small matter! At 2220 last night, Groupe Bel crossed the longitude of 67°16 W, marking their exit from the Pacific Ocean and entry into the Atlantic Ocean. For Sébastien Audigane who today is celebrating his 43rd birthday, it is his second rounding, but the legendary Cape had a special flavour to it this time...

After the difficult conditions experienced over the past few days, the pair passed the base of the cliffs sailing upwind. And now Kito and Seb will leave their fellow competitors to escape northwards while they head for Ushuaia via the Beagle Channel to inspect their keel in sheltered waters.

Ranking On Wednesday 9 March At 15:00 (Ut+1):
1. Virbac-Paprec 3 / Jean-Pierre Dick & Loick Peyron, 5154 nm to finish
2. Mapfre / Iker Martinez & Xabi Fernandez, 132 nm to leader
3. Renault / Pachi Rivero & Antonio Piris, 1243
4. Neutrogena / Boris Herrmann & Ryan Breymaier, 1513
5. Mirabaud / Dominique Wavre & Michèle Parret, 1656
6. Estrella Damm / Alex Pella & Pepe Ribes, 1669
7. Groupe Bel / Kito de Pavant & Seb Audigane, 1688

The Notice of Race is now published at www.eurosaf.org/1598

Yacht Salesperson
Oyster Oyster Marine, UK's premier luxury yacht builder with a range of semi-custom ocean cruising vessels from 46 to 125 feet, is looking for a self-motivated individual to join its sales team with particular responsibility for the Mediterranean market.

Though a proven track record in the marine sales sector is a plus, an applicant with extensive, but non-marine, experience of selling to HNWIs will also be considered.

A strong sailing background and knowledge of yachts is essential, as, naturally, are fluent language skills in European languages. The position will likely be based at Oyster's HQ in Ipswich, though a European base is a future possibility.

Warsash Spring Series Team Ready For Action
A hint of spring was certainly in the air on 6th March 2011 when the 50-strong members of the race management team for the Warsash Spring Series 2011 held a full dress rehearsal for the Solent's premier early season event. All systems afloat and ashore were checked ready for the first day's racing next Sunday 13th March.

As well as the six Spring Series Sundays, the Spring Championship is being held on the final two weekends with multiple races. Sportsboats, "Big Boats" and quarter tonners share the Spring Championship dates of 9th/10th and 16th/17th April 2011.

Entries show several class trophy winners of 2010 returning to the fray to defend their titles. These include Artemis (Paul Turner), J-Dream (David and Kirsty Apthorp) and Oi! (John Cooper). Competition will be keen in the 28-strong Laser SB3 class with three world champions taking part - Jerry Hill (2010), Craig Burlton (2009) and Geoff Carveth (2008). In 2010 Geoff Carveth carried off the Spring Series prize with Craig Burlton topping the class for the Spring Championship.

Three Farr 45s have so far signed up for their class in the Spring Championship, including the newly formed British Keelboat Academy in Kolga. Their competition includes Niklas Zennstrom's Ran and Stewart Whitehead's Rebel. The Sigma 38 class association was formed in 1987. The design came from the drawing board of David Thomas, first Chief Race Officer for the Spring Series 27 years ago. 13 boats are entered, demonstrating the continued popularity of the Sigmas and they will enjoy a separate class in 2011. Class splits for handicap divisions will be decided this Thursday 10th March so class numbers can be kept to an equal size.

The SCRA mark designation system is being introduced by Solent clubs for 2011 and this will be used for the first time in the Warsash Spring Series. Some buoys have also had a change of name for this year and Warsash Sailing Club will be including a free up-to-date BuoyRacer laminated chartlet with each set of sailing instructions for the Series.

Warsash Sailing Club extends a warm welcome to all competitors at Shore House in the entrance to the Hamble River. Breakfast is available from 0730 and a range of hot food and snacks after racing. Those skippers lucky enough to have won their class on the day can also pick up a bottle of champagne in the friendly club bar where you can watch the day's results unfold.

Camper With Emirates Team New Zealand Fully Operational
It has been a pivotal week for CAMPER in the Volvo Ocean Race, as the full team was welcomed to the Emirates Team New Zealand base at Auckland's Viaduct Harbour. The complete sailing and shore team will now be based in Auckland until the boat is shipped to Europe in July.

The next five months will be a massive logistical challenge, as the team manages a mobile base and office for over 25 people, launch and test the new CAMPER Volvo Open 70, and puts in place the infrastructure that will ensure the accommodation, travel and boat logistics for the team over the next 18 months.

Just eight months remain until the start of the 2011-12 Volvo Ocean Race in Alicante, Spain on November 5th. The CAMPER sailing team, which features a combination of both offshore experience and new talent, will now begin an intensive programme in the build up to the race start.

Emirates Team New Zealand Managing Director Grant Dalton:
"It is great to see the team fully operational at the Emirates Team New Zealand base in Auckland. The months ahead are crucial to ensure the success of the project. The more we prepare now, the better position we will be in when we cross the start line in Alicante. Eight months seems a long time away but with a project of this size it will go very quickly. Central to this will be the bringing the boat up to speed as soon as possible after its launch. We are very lucky to have such a fantastic location to undertake the extensive sail testing programme, we have a range of conditions on our doorstep here in New Zealand, which will provide a stunning backdrop for this period in the campaign".

Dubarry Lahinch - Performance Enhanced
Dubarry Lahinch As we all know, losing weight improves performance. You react faster, move quicker. Dubarry applied the same logic to a sprint deck shoe. Inspired by Ireland's most reliably extreme surf destination, the Lahinch is a new featherweight performance sailing shoe design by Dubarry that fastens quickly and securely, keeps your feet cool, drains and dries fast, and grips like an icepick. Add to that Dubarry's unique D-chassis system of ankle control and support, featuring a footbed design inspired by Formula 1 technology, and you've got something genuinely performance enhancing.

Richard Branson on Kiteboarding in the Olympics
Kiteboarding's Olympic Ambassadors, Sir Richard Branson and ISAF Rolex Sailor of the year nominee Kristin Boese met last week during Branson's BVI Kite Jam on Necker Island, an event that attracted both top kiteboarding athletes, celebrities and businessmen from all around the world.

When asked about the IKA's Olympic Project, Branson stated that "Kitesurfing reflects everything that the Olympics stands for. It has all the spirit of the original Olympics. Men against the elements, women against the elements, tremendous skill, tremendous excitement. It's also perhaps the best spectator sport. It looks beautiful and any future Olympics that doesn't have kitesurfing in it need to have their heads examined."

A statement that surely only someone like Sir Richard Branson can make.

We invite everybody who intends to make submission for a full slate of ten events for the 2016 Olympic Sailing Regatta to include Kiteboarding in his proposal - Kiteboarding ticks all the boxes the IOC wants to see in the Olympic Sailing Competition. -- International Kiteboarding Association

Kyrgyzstan to Compete at ISAF Worlds for First Time
Kyrgyzstan are set to send a sailor to compete at an ISAF Sailing World Championships for the first time. Ignatev Ilia, who is 18 years old, will sail in the Laser class at Perth 2011 becoming Kyrgyzstan's first athlete to represent the nation in a major international regatta.

Alex Abramov, spokesman for Kyrgyzstan Sailing said, "We are very proud that Kyrgyzstan will have a representative at the Perth 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships.

Kyrgyzstan are starting to develop sailors that will be able compete on the world stage. And there are plans to send athletes to more international regattas, "We would like our sailors to participate in the European Championships, World Junior Championships and the Olympic Test Event this year," said Abramov.

Kyrgyzstan won't be the only newcomer to the ISAF Sailing World Championships. The Cook Islands are sending entries in the Laser and Laser Radial.

Kazakhstan, Montenegro and Trinidad and Tobago are each sending one entry into the Laser class. And St Lucia will have a representative in the Laser Radial and Palestine has entrants in the Men's RS:X and Men's 470.

Kyrgyzstan joined the ISAF family as an MNA in 2007 and as the sailing community continues to grow throughout the world Perth 2011 has already received entries from 72 nations.

Team Philipps

A mystery buyer has snapped up the remains of Pete Goss' Team Phillips superyacht dream with a £510 eBay bid.

Although seller Mike Reynolds will not reveal the identity of the new owner of the 40ft section of hull of the wrecked yacht he did say he had a West Country address.

And he added: "It weighs about six tonnes. I hope this guy has a big garden."

The huge carbon fibre catamaran cost millions of pounds to build beside the River Dart in Totnes - only to fall apart during sea trials in the North Atlantic almost 11 years ago.

The 40ft section of hull, which was once part of a Falmouth museum display after it washed up in Ireland, has now been sold on the internet auction site for charity.

The bidding started at the end of last month at £30 and ended on Monday with a top bid of £510.

The cash will be going to the Shelterbox charity.

The hugely popular and ever growing Falmouth International Sea Shanty Festival is happening again this year and it's predicted to be the biggest yet. 27 acts will take part, including Cornwall's famous Fishermen's Friends, winners of the Radio 2 Folk Awards Good Tradition title and runners up for Best Group. Billed as the largest free festival of maritime music on the planet and sponsored once again by Skinner's Brewery of Truro, the three day festival will open on Friday 17 June and profits will be donated to the RNLI.

Now in its seventh year, the Falmouth International Sea Shanty Festival has donated more than £20,000 to the RNLI, which as a charity relies on public support. As Festival founder and a shanty man himself with the group Falmouth Shout, John Warren says it's a good mix:
'Sea shanties were used to inspire and help sailors as they set about mundane and physically tough jobs like hauling ropes to unfurl sails, or to heave up the anchor on the old sailing ships. They might not need this musical stimulation on a lifeboat these days, but they do still need the money to support the lifesaving work of the RNLI's volunteer crews and lifeguards. So what better way to raise funds, than to provide a superb weekend of shanty singing?'
