French skipper Charles Caudrelier wins the first ARKEA ULTIM CHALLENGE-Brest
French solo racer Charles Caudrelier, skipper of the Maxi Edmond de Rothschild crossed the finish line off the coast of Brest, this Tuesday morning at 8h 37mn 42s local time (UTC+1hrs) to win the ARKEA ULTIM CHALLENGE-Brest, the first ever solo multihull race around the world, sailed in giant 32m long ULTIM class trimarans.

The race leader who has been unchallenged at the front of the race since the night of January 17, Caudrelier- triumphs on the first edition of this unprecedented race. Before he had to slow to avoid a huge storm at Cape Horn, at one point in the Pacific Ocean Caudrelier was ahead of the time needed to set a new all time record for sailing solo round the world.

His elapsed time is 50 days 19 hours 07 minutes 47 seconds since leaving Brest in the six boat fleet on Sunday 7th January.

After a thrilling head to head duel with 26 year old Tom Laperche down the South Atlantic, Caudrelier, who turned 50 years old on Monday, widened the gap to over 2500 miles ahead of his nearest rival after Laperche had to retire into Cape Town with damage caused by a collision.

Along his route, Caudrelier set a new record for the Indian Ocean and then proved he knew how to moderate his pace to look after his high tech flying ULTIM and give himself and the emblematic Gitana team the best chance of completing the 24,260 nautical miles course.

This success rewards more than ten years of endeavour by the Edmond de Rothschild Gitana team. They worked initially from 2011 with a MOD70 on which they developed the multihull foiling program before they launched the innovative Verdier designed Ultim in 2017.

Charles Caudrelier's victory in figures

Race time : 50 days 19 hours 7 min 42 sec

Philippe Delamare wins the Global Solo Challenge 2023-2024 https://mcusercontent.com/c29f6dab419ffad4fdfba5b97/images/947346df-fbc5-dd52-e10c-50bfaaea775a.jpg
On Saturday February 24th at 3 minutes past 3 pm, local time, Philippe Delamare crossed the finish line by the breakwater of the Galician city of A Coruna winning the first edition of the Global Solo Challenge on Mowgli, 147 days and 1 hour after leaving for his circumnavigation on September 30th 2023.

His arrival was triumphant, epic and emotional. Huge waves were smashing by the Tower of Hercules, the iconic outpost that marks the western end of the bay of A Coruna, the oldest lighthouse still in function, built nearly two millennia ago. Even driving a rigid work power boat we had to head out towards Philippe very slowly, and zig-zag to avoid breaking waves.

Philippe was sailing with just a partially furled headsail, two days before he had broken his boom and could not use the mainsail. The staysail halyard had ripped off the deck between Uruguay and Rio leaving him with a limited choice of sails. The boat was rolling violently in the waves as Philippe followed the only safe approach to A Coruna in such weather conditions. There is a half mile gap between the coast and some rocky shallows to the north where waves were breaking heavily.

Mowgli kept going despite her numerous scars and all the signs of the hardship of the circumnavigation. A rescue boat of the Guardia Civil came out and seemed to be wanting to protect the boat and skipper on their last few miles. They powered ahead and positioned themselves before the rocky shoals where Philippe had to gybe one last time to head south towards the finish lime. When he did, the powerboat showed the way to the finish line between the breakwater and a lateral red buoy which also happens to be the safe channel to approach A Coruna in a storm.

Philippe Delamare and Mowgli looked indeed tired on finishing their immense adventure. Mowgli bears many scars and the boom, snapped in half, stood really out. Philippe decided to tackle the winter storm that blew across the North Atlantic and press on to the finish. A knock down on thursday nearly put an disastrous end to his circumnavigation. Fortunately the boat was laid flat and the boom broke but Philippe was able to continue to the finish without using his mainsail.

Seahorse Sailor Of The Month
This month's nominees:

Fede Waksman (URU)
This guy is really, really good and deserves recognition far beyond the coast of his native Uruguay. Compared to his friend and runner-up Carlos Manera, Waksman was racing a much older Raison design and constantly battling with a lack of preparation time brought about by his endless struggle for funding. That did not end with his Mini Transat victory, and Waksman was soon heading to the airport to fly home and start to earn some money again to pay his debts

Carlos Manera (ESP)
The Spanish skipper's strong performance in this year's Mini Transat took many by surprise. Everyone who knew him was aware of his sailing skill but Manera's Manuard design, with its two sets of contrasting boards and foils, was regarded as a great experiment with an eye to the future. Few anticipated that Manera would be able to overcome all of the complexities of juggling four foils smoothly enough to maintain such a consistent fast performance all the way across the Atlantic

Last Month's winner:
Marco Trombetti (ITA)
Joy and pride for all who know Translated!'- Barbara Bauer; 'With his endless optimism and big visions he is capable of doing anything' - Serena Laus; 'He expertly navigated our boat to ambitious goals. It's hard to find such great leaders, and impossible not to vote for them once you've met them' - Luca Mastrostefano; 'One sailor who does not need translating!' - Roberto Magnifico; 'Marco has inspired people like to me to care about sailing' - Tim Arata.

2024 Aegean 600

Aegean 600 Organizers at the Hellenic Offshore Racing Club (HORC) are pleased to announce the 2024 edition of the Aegean 600 is now open for entry. The event is being held over 5-13 July 2024 and is co-organized by the host venue at Olympic Marine.

Now in its fourth annual edition, the race has grown in interest and popularity every year, with last year's third edition attracting 500 sailors racing on 45 yachts from 16 nations. What attracts them is this race's unique format: a scenic offshore journey of 605 miles that starts and finishes under the watchful gaze of the Ancient Temple of Poseidon poised on the sea cliff above Attica's Cape Sounio.

Besides this amazing and historic start and finish venue, the course itself is a spectacular tour that passes 13 iconic Greek islands, including a lap around the volcanic caldera of Santorini in the first part of the race and later towards end of the race through a gap at the islands of Dilos and Mykonos.

The ever-present northerly Meltemi winds that can peak to over 30 knots propels the fleet around this course, challenging their skills in both seamanship and navigation, yet also delivering clear sunny skies, starry nights and warm waters throughout.

Seaworthy monohulls of minimum length of 9.00 m and seaworthy multihulls of length 9.15 m and larger are welcome to enter with ORC and/or IRC certificates.

Recognized offshore class yachts such as Dehler 30 One Designs, Class 40's, Mini 6.5's, Figaro 2's and Figaro 3's are also welcome to enter. The event will also welcome Maxi yachts as a race on the 2024 International Maxi Class (IMA's) calendar of events.

Jaw-Dropping Day For Japan At Day 1 Of 470 Worlds
Japan came to the 470 World Championship in Llucmajor, Mallorca, as defending champions. Lying in fifth place after three tricky, light-wind races is not at all a bad start for the 2023 World Champions Keiju Okada and Miho Yoshioka.

However, they're only the third-placed Japanese at this early stage of the competition. Holding the top two spots are Tetsuya Isozaki and Yurie Seki (2023 World bronze medallists) and wife/husband team in second place, Ai and Yugo Yoshida.

So Japan sit in 1st, 2nd and 5th overall, although the scoreboard is a little deceptive at this early stage of the competition. Currently the teams are counting their top two scores and discarding their worst. In the case of the leading two Japanese teams, they both scored a 1,2 but by strange coincidence both are also discarding a 21st.

Two more races are on the schedule for Wednesday which should bring an end to the Qualifying phase before the fleet gets divided into Gold and Silver for the next three days of competition. -- Andy Rice

2024 OK Dinghy World Championship
The largest OK Dinghy event to ever be held south of the equator is all set to proceed after 112 sailors from seven nations completed equipment inspection and registration ahead of the start of the 2024 Tan Lines OK Dinghy World Championship, which was opened Sunday evening at the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron, in Brisbane, Australia.

The saga surrounding the European containers was finally solved at the end of last week with a collective sigh of relief with both shipments cleared by midday on Friday in time for the start of equipment inspection. A huge amount of work by the locals, especially by local sailor Steve Shale, went into getting the boxes delivered and cleared, with the boats then collected by trailer and delivered to the club by the Australian sailors.

The championship got underway on Monday with the fleet split into two groups with six races scheduled over three days for the opening series, before a final series of four races. If four races are completed by the end of Wednesday, then Thursday will be a lay day. Racing is scheduled to start at 13.00 each day. Check the links below how to follow the racing (and what not to follow).

Racing runs through to Saturday 2 March.

44Cup 2024: Fresh influx of crew
After a brief winter break, the 44Cup resumes next week with the 44Cup Calero Marinas, first of the five event 2024 series, taking place out of Puerto Calero in Lanzarote.

Three months ago, the high performance owner-driver one design RC44 fleet concluded its 2023 44Cup on these same Canary Islands waters. On that occasion Hugues Lepic's Aleph Racing comfortably won ahead of Team Nika with Nico Poons' Charisma completing podium, to win the season.

Aleph Racing had an exceptional 2023 with only one result off the podium, but even so she still finished the season second overall, three points behind Charisma.

For the 44Cup Calero Marinas, Aleph Racing will have almost the same winning crew as before, led by Michele Ivaldi, however standing in for owner Hugues Lepic will be Italian Pietro Loro Piana. Loro Piana steered Aleph Racing to second place at the 44Cup Alcaidesa Marina last year.

The more significant crew change for 2024 is the departure of Hamish Pepper from tactical duties on Charisma. The Kiwi ace helped coax Nico Poons and his team to 44Cup victory, in both 2023 and 2022. He is being replaced by American RC44 veteran Andy Horton, who last sailed with the class in 2022 as Torbjörn Törnqvist's tactician on Artemis Racing. Ironically, following the departure of the Swedish team's tactician, Dylan Fletcher, so Pepper will be taking his spot in Lanzarote - albeit only as a one-off. -- James Boyd

* From Michael Brown:

I read with interest the report on leg 3 of the Ocean Globe Race & in particular the comments about the oldest yacht in the race, Galiana With Secure & her Finnish heritage. Whilst acknowledging that she was built in Finland her owner, Tapio is very lucky that prior to his buying her she was rebuilt & then raced for 12 years in RORC, JOG & Solent Races by Patrick Green & his crew as Swan Galiana.

We are following her around the World but can not help but remember the marvellous times we had perhaps just preparing her for her current adventure. We wish Tapio & his crew well, congratulate them on their leg 3 result & look forward to seeing them back in the Solent for the finish.

Finally I'm sorry to say that most of us preferred her with a blue hull!
